BA IN ART
Art courses are grounded in a process of creative
production that integrates practice, theory,
and history. You’ll take Foundation courses in
drawing, color & design, and art history, and then
narrow your focus with concentrations in Studio
Art, Photography, Graphic Design, Illustration
and Animation or a combination of disciplines.

The Judith Mara Carson Center for Visual Arts is
designed with your educational needs in mind.
Beautiful, light-filled spaces inspire and energize your
imagination. Featuring fully equipped art and photography
studios; a digital immersion project room; an art history
resource center and classroom; and a communal hub to
host events, connect with friends, or just hang out.
In the 2D, 3D, and photography studios, you’ll create works of art
in a variety of media from traditional practices to digital production
in animation, illustration, and design. Showcase your multimedia
projects in an immersive wrap-around gallery. Endless opportunities
are available. Explore what interests you with the flexibility to
integrate ideas and insights from other disciplines with your artistic

Studio Art
Build a strong conceptual foundation and
explore multiple mediums through practicebased
courses in painting, drawing, printmaking,
sculpture, mixed media, and new media. Studio
Art students supplement their course work with
internships, which provide first-hand experience
in artists’ studios and art-related businesses. In
the capstone Senior Art Seminar, you will produce
an independent body of work for a Senior Thesis
Exhibition in the Hewitt Gallery of Art.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Learn your craft in the darkroom at Marymount Manhattan with
Photography I and II, and take a full range of upper-level courses
at our partner institution, the International Center of Photography
(ICP). Located in midtown Manhattan, ICP features a worldclass
museum, and houses state-of-the-art darkroom and digital
facilities. Photography students conclude their career at Marymount
Manhattan in the capstone Senior Art Seminar with a Senior Thesis
Art Exhibition that they design, install, and for which they produce an
artist’s statement.

individuals in the studio facilitate [conceptual artist Matt] Mullican’s
practice, as well as how that artistic practice functions as a business. As a
young artist beginning my own career and looking at an uncertain future,

experience that taught me a great deal about my chosen profession.

GRAPHIC
DESIGN
Develop traditional skills in design and typography
while gaining expertise in the latest innovations in
digital imaging, web design, and motion graphics.
The goal of the program is to educate students in three
areas of design: theoretical, technical, and creative.
On completion of the program, students graduate
with a professional portfolio as part of their capstone
requirement.

“I was a double major in Graphic Design and Photography. In my senior
year I was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to serve as
a language-learning assistant in the Czech Republic for the 2020-21
academic year. I am thrilled to have been placed at an art high school in
the city of Ostrava. My coursework and faculty mentors were invaluable in
helping me achieve this success. I am excited at the opportunity to teach
English to students, engaging them in both visual and verbal languages.”

ILLUSTRATION
AND ANIMATION
Build skills in drawing, painting, illustration and animation while developing
fluency in time-based media and the art of visual storytelling. Animators
and illustrators approach the study in both analog and digital formats,
incorporating sound and movement with strong observational drawing,
creative writing, character design, and storyboarding. Students graduate
with a professional portfolio as part of their capstone requirement.

As an Art History major, you will develop a strong fundamental understanding of the discipline. The curriculum covers
a wide range of fields from ancient and classical to contemporary and nonwestern. Courses in methodology provide
instruction art history theory, and training in studio art offers insight into the techniques of the artist. You will visit and
study the collections of museums, galleries and auction houses and gain firsthand experience through internships. All
students are encouraged to study abroad for at least a semester and develop their proficiency in a foreign language.
Qualified students are invited to pursue honors in art history.

Expand your study at one of Marymount
Manhattan’s many international partnership
locations, including Reid Hall (Columbia
University’s campus in Paris) and Scuola
Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence. You can
also enroll in Art 288: Visual Arts Abroad,
an experiential art history course held every
January in cities like Paris, Florence, Rome,
Athens, and Venice.

FORGE YOUR OWN PATH
OUR MINORS
Marymount Manhattan also offers minors in Art Therapy, Arts
Management, Art History, Studio Art, Photography, and Graphic
Design, so you can create a program of study that is suited
to your goals.
The Art Therapy minor links the disciplines of art and psychology.
Through theoretical and applied coursework and internships,
you’ll learn the basic principles and practices of the field.
The Arts Management program is designed to train students
with business or art backgrounds for entry-level to mid-level
arts management positions. The curriculum covers cultural
institution administration and the theoretical concepts
and practical skills necessary for successful marketing,
funding, programming, and management.

APPLY
Admission to programs in Studio Art,
Photography, Graphic Design, or
Illustration and Animation requires
an art portfolio. You are required to
submit a portfolio of 12-15 examples
of your best artwork. A list of the titles
and media for each image should
be included. An artist statement or
statement of your artistic aspirations is
optional. If you do not have a portfolio
at the time of application, you will be
considered a conditional Art major
and a faculty advisor will evaluate
your work after your first semester.
Additionally, portfolios will be reviewed
for art scholarship consideration.
Portfolios may be submitted on the
admissions portal once the application
for admission is completed. Please see
the admission website for application
deadlines.
EXHIBIT IN
THE HEWITT
GALLERY OF ART
The Hewitt Gallery of Art is a professional gallery and
laboratory where you can gain firsthand experience
in exhibition practices. Marymount Manhattan
students curate, install, and present their work in
individual and group exhibitions. The Gallery is
also known in the New York art community as an
alternative exhibition space, showcasing the work of
emerging and established contemporary artists. In
addition, Gallery receptions give you opportunities
to engage with professional artists, critics, collectors,
and curators. Many of the exhibiting artists are also
guest presenters in our classes.
Art History applicants are not required
to submit a portfolio, but may submit
a five- to seven-page research paper
on either a specific artist or artistic
movement to be considered for an art
scholarship. This may be submitted
to the Office of Admission via email.
Please make reference in the subject
line and on paper that this submission
is for consideration for the Art History
scholarship. Please see the admission
