Rio de Janeiro carnival costumes carry strong African tradition influences
stemming from a history of slave trade practised by Portuguese colonisers
in Brazil from the 16th to 19th century. The use of feathers on carnival
masks in Brazil originated in Africa as a symbol of one’s ability to rise
above adversity and to travel to another world for rebirth and regrowth.
