The Little Library Year
Recipes and Reading to Suit Each Season
KATE YOUNG
Reading The Little Library Year was like finding
a new, dear friend who is equally passionate
about books and seasonal cooking. Like The
Little Library Cookbook and The Little Library
Christmas, the recipes, the photography and
the reading recommendations are impeccable.
I would love to give this book to everyone
I know.
Starve Acre
ANDREW MICHAEL HURLEY
Chilling, unsettling and unforgettable, Starve
Acre is a haunting study of a couple’s grief
and guilt in a rural English village. Steeped
in English folklore and folk horror, Starve
Acre was tremendously gripping and deeply
affecting.
Folk
ZOE GILBERT
A captivatingly dark tapestry of tales about
the remote island village of Neverness where
superstition, ritual and folklore hold sway
over its inhabitants. Timeless, magical and
macabre, Folk is one I will want to revisit
again and again.
City Moon
RACHAEL COLE
In this perfect bedtime book, a little boy and
his mother take an evening walk through
their neighbourhood to look for the moon.
Charmingly illustrated, City Moon is gentle,
sweet and comforting. Highly recommended
to the young and the young at heart.
Ghostland
In Search of a Haunted Country
EDWARD PARNELL
Ghostland is both a deeply moving memoir of
personal grief and an exploration of literature
and film shaped and haunted by the British
landscape. It is also easily one of the best

LISA MOORE
10 Minutes 38 Seconds
in This Strange World
ELIF SHAFAK
Elif Shafak is the most widely read female writer in
Turkey. An advocate for women’s rights and freedom
of speech, it is no surprise that she has written a
book about the trauma women’s minds and bodies
are subjected to in Istanbul. Although Leila’s (the
main character) life is infused with tragedy, the novel
focuses on the joy she found in it during her last 10
minutes of life.
Actress
ANNE ENRIGHT
Actress is the latest novel from Irish writer Anne
Enright and is about a woman writing her mother’s
biography when she is 58 years old, which is how
old her mother was when she died. Norah’s mother
was Katherine O’Dell, a famous actress known for her
red-hair and for shooting an Irish film producer in the
foot. Norah grows up loving her sophisticated mother
but never really understanding her.
“
Migrations: A Novel
CHARLOTTE MCCONAGHY
Propelled by a narrator as fierce and fragile
as the Arctic terns she is following on the
boat Saghani, Migration is part mystery,
part love story set in a future where birds
have disappeared, fish are scarce and wild
creatures no longer roam the Earth . It is a sad
and beautiful book with an unforgettable main
character in Franny Stone, who has always
been a “wanderer.”
The Witch Elm: A Novel
TANA FRENCH
Tana French is at her suspenseful best in this
slow-burning, character-driven story in which
a young Irishman, who’s always considered
himself a lucky person, has to reassess his
past when a gruesome find on the grounds
of his beloved uncle’s house dredges up
unpleasant skeletons. Family secrets are
revealed and hearts will be broken!
Dual Citizens
ALIX OHLIN
Ohlin weaves a beautiful tale of two half-sisters
as they grow up in Montreal with little
help from their mentally ill and temperamental
mother, Marianne. It celebrates the triumphs
and disappointments of their young lives and
stayed with me for a long time.

The Pull of the Stars
EMMA DONOGHUE
This fast-paced novel takes place over three
days in an Irish maternity ward. It is set in 1918,
in the middle of a war and a pandemic. We
follow a nurse that is thrust into a position of
authority, and a young volunteer who proves
to be invaluable. Donoghue, author of Room,
began working on this novel around the 100th
anniversary of the 1918 pandemic. It was
published in July of this year and offers insights
and parallels to our current situation.
Utopia Avenue: A Novel
DAVID MITCHELL
Utopia Avenue is an excellent jumping off point
for readers new to the author. Set in England
during the Swinging Sixties, the novel follows an
up-and-coming rock group who manage to encounter
nearly every cultural icon from the era.
Fans of Mitchell will be delighted by cameos of
past characters, and some further clarification of
his overarching story. That being said, this reads
as an independent novel of music, stardom and
revolution.

The Splendid and the Vile
A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance
During the Blitz
ERIK LARSON
The Splendid and the Vile is an account of the first
year of Churchill’s role as Prime Minister. Through
the raids and shortages, his power and charisma
builds as he becomes the leader we think of today.
This extensively researched book is accessible
and often humorous. It would be a great gift for
anyone who enjoys biographies or history.
We’re Not From Here
GEOFF RODKEY
This middle grade novel was a family favorite
this year. Humans have had to flee Earth and are
looking for a new home planet. One family is invited
to come to Choom on a trial basis and must act as
ambassadors for their whole species. The children
go to Choom school with its three different species.
The family learns to navigate cultural differences
and advocate for the few humans left.
Eye Spy
Wild Ways Animals See the World
GUILLAUME DUPRAT
This clever nonfiction picture book shows us what
other animals see. Each page shows how different
species would see the same scene. For example,
some animals do not see the color red, while others
can see ultraviolet light. Some animals have nearly
360 degree vision. The large format, beautiful
illustrations and exciting information would make it
a great gift for kids ages 5-10.

And Their Children
After Them
A Novel
NICOLAS MATHIEU
A revelation. Winner of the Prix Goncourt, this
depiction of teenagers struggling to find their
own maturity in the rust belt of 1990s France
is as scintillating as the sun and familial
pressures beating down upon them. Easily
one of the best novels I’ve read in decades.
The Pine Islands
MARION POSCHMANN
A German man, unsettled in his marriage,
takes an impulsive trip to Japan and finds
himself travelling in the steps of Basho. Along
the way, he thwarts the efforts of a young,
suicidal student who joins him on a journey of
self-discovery. Through the author’s economy
of words, the forests and hills of Japan are still
calling out to me.
Follow Me to Ground
A Novel
SUE RAINSFORD
The narrative is as mysterious and otherworldly
as the strangest-looking fungi. Soil
absorbs and regenerates in this fable of a
father, a daughter and their powers to heal.
Truly unique.
Dirt Music
TIM WINTON
Reading only my second Winton book, I still
ask myself, ‘Why have I taken so long!?’. A
master of Australian fiction, here he tells the
story of a good man leading a solitary life
because of a tragedy he has witnessed. Winton
has the character further isolate himself
on a west coast island that, at one point, is
devastated by a storm. It is a piece of writing
that stands as one of the most exhilarating I
have ever read.
Death in Her Hands
A Novel
OTTESSA MOSHFEGH
What admiration I have for Ottessa Moshfegh.
I was captivated by My Year of Rest and Relaxation
when upon finishing, I knew I was going
to read everything she had or will ever write.
Her new novel is as singular as all the rest, to
the point that Moshfegh could write a book in
any genre and reinvent it.

SUE GOYETTE
ARTIST PROFILE
Current Poet Laureate of Halifax and past recipient of the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia
Masterworks Arts Award, Sue Goyette has made an astonishing impact on the literary & cultural
scene of her home city, the country and beyond. From the magic of Montreal to the wild allure
of the Atlantic, Sue has been an acute observer and emotional guide on the paths of her life and
world. Along the way, accolades have followed, including the Pat Lowther, Atlantic
Poetry, Earle Birney and Bliss Carmen Awards. Seven poetry collections, a novel
and several poetry anthologies edited, Sue has accomplished much. However,
her greatest achievements may be the devotion of her creative writing students
at Dalhousie University, and the gratitude and adoration of her readers.
Your favourite occupation
I love writing. I love putting words together and creating sequences and collisions
that startle me out of my understanding of those words and how they work.
I love writing on the edge of my knowing and getting a glimpse of a silence
that is shimmering and waiting and is patient. I love sculpting what I’m
seeing into words that convey that galactic mystery we live with.
What you appreciate the most in your friends
My friends are fierce, brilliant, funny, real. I love how they keep me
grounded and are furnaces for when the world feels cold. They also
understand the importance of snacks. And good music. And how both those
things belong in the same room.
What you consider your greatest achievement
I can plank for longer than a minute without the terror of falling on my face. Also, I
can finally make a pretty good pizza crust.
Your favourite painters and composers
Agnes Martin. Paul Klee. Cy Twombly. Mary Pratt. Firelei Báez. Kenojuak Ashevak.
Quvianaqtuk Pudlat. I’ve been listening to Bach and Phoebe Bridgers.
Your favourite colour and flower
Turner’s orange and that intense dahlia pink that’s like no other. Dahlias, zinnias,
anemones, hibiscus (the wide as a plate ones), the first tulips of the season,
magnolias, lilacs, the audacious agave.
Your favourite prose authors/Your favourite poets
Can I say anyone who needs to write? Anyone who uses poems or prose to
make sense of themselves? They’re my people.

A Novel
TRACY CHEVALIER
Violet Speedwell is one of the women, the
generation after WWI, often referred to as surplus
women, having lost husbands, fiancés, many male
relatives, during the war. Tracy Chevalier once
again focuses on an overlooked area of women’s
history, bringing Violet to life as she grieves her
fiancé’s death in the war, and learns to look to her
life and her future. Finely researched, the stitches
of the women thread in and out amongst the
friendships and relationships which flourish and
give meaning to their lives.

crisp plotting for a gripping read once again from
Louise Penny.

The legacy of the French magazine
Metal Hurlant is celebrated through
these unique science fiction and fantasy
stories. This anthology highlights the
talent of many American and European
comic creators.
The Woman in
the Dunes
KOBO ABE
A classic existential tale about a man
trapped at the bottom of a sand dune
with a woman. Sand gets on everything.
Why I Am Not a Buddhist
EVAN THOMPSON
An interesting critique of what the author calls
‘Buddhist exceptionalism.’ A look at the West’s
habit of adopting practices from Buddhism while
abandoning all of the religious ritual that ties it
together.
Starship Troopers
ROBERT HEINLEIN
One of the most influential books in all of science
fiction. At its core you have a compelling
tale of pride, duty, and honor.
Man of Peace
The Illustrated Story of the Dalai Lama
of Tibet
WILLIAM MEYERS | ROBERT THURMAN
MICHAEL G BURBANK
This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel
telling the story of the 14th Dalai Lama and
China’s occupation of Tibet. Heart-wrenching but
rewarding.

BEST OF 2020
A Song for the
Dark Times
IAN RANKIN
Retired and with his health in decline, John
Rebus is still very much in the middle of the
action. His daughter Samantha is in trouble
so he is determined to help here-whether
she wants him to or not.
Pull of the Stars
A Novel
EMMA DONOGHUE
Set during the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918, this
novel shows us just how much history repeats
itself, especially as it was finished long
before any of us were aware of the COVID-19
Pandemic.
The Cutting Place
JANE CASEY
This is is one of my favourite police procedural
series right now. In this 9th book, Maeve and
Derwent investigate the dark underbelly of
high society.
Strange Flowers
DONAL RYAN
In my opinion, Donal Ryan is one of the
best authors out there. I’m reminded of the
great Alistair MacLeod where every word is
necessary and place is as much a part of the
story as the people.
Leonard and
Hungry Paul
RONAN HESSION
A warm-hearted story of two overlooked
people who are simply living life as best they
can. A good reminder to look around us and
see those who may simply be falling through
the cracks.

HERE’S WHAT YOU JUST DID
1
You embraced what
makes us unique.
You kept dollars
in our economy.
An independent bookstore
recirculates 28% of its money
locally, whereas Amazon only
recirculates 4%.
2
You wouldn’t want your house to
look like everyone else’s in
Canada. So why would you want your
community to look that way?
5
3
You created
local jobs.
Local businesses are
better at creating
higher-paying jobs for
our neighbors.
4
7
You helped the
environment.
Buying from local businesses
conserves fuel for
transportation, requires less
packaging, and means you
get products you know are
safe and well-made, because
we stand behind them.
8
You nurtured
community.
We know you, and you know
us. Studies have shown that
local businesses donate to
community causes at more
than twice the rate of chains
and online retailers.
You took advantage
of our expertise.
You are our friends and neighbours,
and we have a vested interest in
knowing how to serve you. We’re
passionate about what we do. Why
not take advantage of it?
6
You conserved
your tax dollars.
Shopping in a local business district
means less infrastructure, less
maintenance, and more money
available to beautify our community.
Also, spending locally instead of online
ensures that your sales taxes are
reinvested where they belong—right
here in your community!
9
You created
more choice.
We pick the items we sell based on
what we know you like and want.
Local businesses carry a wider array
of unique products because we buy
for our own individual market.
10
You made us a
destination.
The more interesting and unique
we are as a community, the more
we will attract new neighbours and
You invested in
entrepreneurship.
Creativity and entrepreneurship
are what the Canadian economy
is founded upon. Nurturing
local business ensures a strong
community.
