Plans for final
progressing
THE SPEED limit on Main Rd,
Redcliffs, could be lowered to
40km/h as part of the multimillion
dollar project to complete
the final section of Te Ara Ihutai
Christchurch Coastal Pathway.
The speed limit reduction is one
of several proposed changes the
city council is seeking community
feedback on as it moves to finalise
plans for the final section of the
pathway, around Moncks Bay.
“The final section of the Christchurch
Coastal Pathway runs
through a complex coastal environment,’’
city council transport
planning and delivery manager
Lynette Ellis said.
“We are going to be building
in a narrow, busy corridor along
the coastal marine edge that has
wildlife and natural hazards so it
requires a lot of detailed planning.
“Our goal is to substantially
upgrade the existing narrow grit
path to create a 4m-wide, safe,
high-quality pathway for a variety
of users. •Turn to page 5
CONNECTION: A 4m-wide section will complete the Christchurch Coastal Pathway. It will be accessible to a variety of users.
Meeting to discuss
rising sea levels
PEOPLE LIVING in the
Lyttelton and Mt Herbert areas
will be the first to be consulted
on over the impact of rising sea
levels.
The city council has agreed
to start adaptation planning
with low-lying
coastal and
inland communities
likely to
be impacted by
rising sea levels.
A meeting
will be held
Mike
Davidson
on Monday,
6-7.30pm, Allandale
Hall,
Governors Bay.
Said urban development and
transport committee chairman
Mike Davidson: “We have a big
coastline and a lot of low-lying
land, so one of the most significant
challenges facing us is how
do we respond to the coastal
hazards caused by climate
change and sea level rise.
“First up, it’s important we
have a city-wide conversation
about the adaptation planning
process as there are implications
for all residents, not just people
CONSULTATION: The city council will be talking to
communities likely to be impacted by rising sea levels.
living in coastal and low-lying
communities. We have some big
decisions ahead of us that will
likely have an impact not just on
this generation, but on generations
to come.
“We then need to work closely
with our first tranche of communities,
to develop an adaptation
plan together.
“The adaptation planning
programme that we have
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
formally endorsed today is
based on the Ministry for the
Environment’s guidance and
puts community engagement
at the centre of our decisionmaking.”
The city council sessions will
give interested residents across
the district an opportunity to
learn more about the coastal
hazards adaptation planning
programme.
Spirit of Enderby first
to use new berth
LYTTELTON’S new $67
million cruise ship berth
was meant to be vessel
empty for a while – until
Spirit of Enderby arrived
on Monday.
The Christchurchbased
Heritage Expeditions
flagship has claimed
the honour of being the
first cruise ship to berth at
the new facility.
The berth will be officially
opened next Wednesday.
Covid-19 will mean cruise
ships arriving in Lyttelton will be
scare, if non-existent, until the
pandemic is over.
But the Spirit of Enderby was
a welcome insight of what is to
come.
Lyttelton Port Company
engagement and sustainability
general manager Phil de Joux
said he was not expecting the
berth would be used by a cruise
ship so soon.
The port was also busy at the
moment so having the new berth
was helping ease congestion.
“We’ve been looking at other
uses for it … a Korean Antarctic
research ship will be using it
next week but at the moment we
actually have quite a bit of berth
HONOUR: The Spirit of Enderby was
the first ship to use Lyttelton’s new
cruise liner berth.
congestion in our inner harbour,
so it will be good,” said de Joux.
De Joux said that in spite of the
dampener Covid-19 had put on
the cruise industry, he was proud
his team was able to finish the
berth on time and on budget.
“We are nearly at the end of five
years of reconstruction now following
the earthquakes. It is the
end of an era and it is a great asset
for the future.”
The Spirit of Enderby sailed
directly from Vladivostok in
eastern Russia and the crew have
been in isolation for 44 days.
Russian crew members received
another Covid-19 test on Monday
morning and have to remain on
the ship for now.
The 50-passenger ship will sail
to Invercargill to pick up its first
passengers on November 24 for a
Kiwi-only cruise.
Pathway to marina under way
CONTRACTORS have started
constructing a pathway, two
new pedestrian crossings and
relocating the Sutton Quay
port access gate, creating a
pedestrian link from Norwich
Quay to Te Ana Marina in
Lyttelton.
Currently, there is no
pedestrian
access from
the quay to Te
Ana Marina,
meaning
people must
either use the
stairs from
Simeon Quay
to the back
Andrew
Turner
of Te Ana
Marina, or
walk down to
Godley Quay.
Banks Peninsula Ward
councillor and Deputy Mayor
Andrew Turner said it was great
to seee the Lyttelton community
gain additional access to the
waterfront.
“Whakaraupō/Lyttelton
Harbour is a special place
to many people. We know
that particularly during the
Covid-19 level 4 lockdown
earlier this year Te Ana Marina
was a very popular spot for
locals to walk and enjoy some
fresh air,” he said.
“Providing this walkway
will mean people can now
easily walk from Lyttelton’s
town centre to Te Ana
Marina.
“I’m looking forward to
seeing more families and
visitors down on the waterfront
this summer – this is the perfect
spot for a picnic, a walk along
the promenade or a chance to
take in the stunning harbour
views.”
Lyttelton Port Company
engagement and sustainability
general manager Phil de
Joux said since Te Ana
Marina was opened in 2018,
it has been fantastic to see the
community use the recreational
area as a space to connect and
enjoy.
“While the new pathway is
being constructed, no vehicles
or pedestrians will be able to
access the inner harbour via
Sutton Quay. Alternative access
and traffic management is in
place for LPC’s customers and
port users.”
The new pathway is expected
to be completed by mid-
December.
“We’re expecting to have
the pedestrian pathway ready
in time for the community
to enjoy over the summer
holidays,” de Joux said.
Construction
expected to start
in June next year
•From page 1
“We also want to create some new
pedestrian connections so we can
make the pathway more accessible
for locals,’’ Ellis said.
“This will require some changes,
including relocation of some existing
bus stops and removal of some
on-street parking on Main Rd.
“With considerably more pedestrians
and cyclists expected, a
lower speed limit will help to keep
everyone safe as they move through
the area.’’
To help maintain the availability
of on-street parking in this popular
area, the city council is proposing
to upgrade the car park on the
pump station site on Main Rd and
add angle parking on Cliff St and
Bayview Rd.
“We are working towards a construction
start in the middle of next
year,’’ Ellis said.
“We want to get this final section
of the pathway completed so we can
realise the Christchurch Coastal
Pathway Group’s vision of having
a coastal pathway that stretches all
the way from Ferrymead Bridge
through to Scarborough.’’
Construction of the final section
of the pathway is being funded
by the Government as part of its
Covid-19 response. It is one of
the ‘shovel ready’ projects that are
designed to stimulate the economy.
Christchurch
Hospital’s
Emergency
Department
is on the move.
From 7.30am on
Wednesday 18 November,
if you need emergency
hospital care, you’ll need
to come to the new
Emergency Department
in Waipapa – Christchurch
Hospital, Hagley.
Entry to the Emergency Department drop off
area is off Riccarton Ave.
Turn left in front of Christchurch Women’s
Hospital for drop off and accessible parking
in front of the new building.
Please keep the
Emergency Department
for emergencies.

SLOW: Many water supplies on Banks Peninsula are stream-fed and are
now running low due to dry conditions. Residents are being warned to save
water.
Residents urged to save
water as streams run low
STREAM-FED water
supplies on Banks
Peninsula are dropping,
and the city council is
pleading for residents to
start saving water.
Data from the city
council shows Akaroa’s
cumulative rainfall this
year is the lowest it has
been in a decade – its total
rainfall this year is 447mm,
less than half the 10-year
average of 957mm.
Duvauchelle’s water supply
was also under extra
pressure, with the streams
that supply it running particularly
low for November.
“Most water supplies in
Banks Peninsula
are
fed by small
streams,
which are
usually at
their lowest
when Summer
water demand
is at its
Helen
Beaumont
highest,” city council head
of three waters and waste
Helen Beaumont said.
“Right now, streams
are exceptionally low and
expected to keep dropping,
so we need residents to get
on board early and start
saving water now please.’’
The city council had not
imposed water restrictions,
but were watching weather
forecasts, stream flows,
and daily water use “very
closely.”
“Even if we get scattered
rain over coming days, it
won’t do much to change
the overall situation with
the streams,’’ Beaumont
said.
The city council also
needed to ensure it was not
taking too much water from
the streams, as doing so
would have an impact on
the plant, fish and insects
that live in the waterways,
as well as the long-term
quality of the water.
Redcliffs School’s steel
construction award-winning
THE STEEL construction
of Redcliffs School has won
an award.
The school was opened
by Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern in June, after being
forced to move from its old
site by the February 22,
2011, earthquake.
This week, it was singled
out in the Excellence in
Steel Awards.
Christchurch firm VIP
Steel won the Up To $1.5
million category for the
way it used steel to get
around quake and coastal
ground challenges.
A Steel Construction
NZ spokesperson said the
judges were impressed
with the construction of
the school and its use of
blended materials, and
commended the team’s
focus on buildability and
collaboration.
“The team has shown
out-of-the-box thinking
to produce a resilient
building on a site with
a history of earthquake
damage.”
The site sits in a flood
plain and a coastal inundation
zone, and is subject to
lateral spread and liquefaction
settlement.
Almost 170 structural
steel industry leaders and
specialists gathered at
Skyline, Queenstown, to
celebrate the best of the
best at the awards.
VIP Steel also won a second
award for The Spur in
the Standalone Residential
category.

ADVERTORIAL
Customer feedback
sparks A-Four-Dable idea
at Four Square Redcliffs
When Four Square Redcliffs
opened its doors in June 2020,
operator Heath De Garnham
promised the team would have
their ears wide open to listen
to their customers.
It’s a promise the team are
staying true to, says Heath
“we’re a community store
and a big part of being a part
of a tight knit community is
supporting each other, listening
and responding to what our
customers want and need.”
One message the Four Square
Redcliffs team have been
hearing loud and clear is that
providing excellent value for
money, as well as convenience
and choice in their community
store is extremely important.
The team put their heads
together and have taken action,
introducing ‘Local Deal’, specials
that are personally selected by
the Four Square Redcliffs team,
plus a brand new idea called
‘A-Four-Dable Everyday’.
The A-Four-Dable concept
came about as a result of
listening to our customers says
Heath, “they’ve been telling
us they’d appreciate some
certainty around the price of their
everyday grocery items.”
It was a challenge the Four
Square Redcliffs team were keen
to find a solution for and set
about identifying everyday items
that regularly feature in most
Redcliffs resident’s weekly shop.
With fruit and veg, bread, milk,
cheese, yogurt, biscuits, frozen
fruit, beer, wine and shampoo
all on the A-Four-Dable list, Four
Square Redcliffs customers
can now look out for the yellow
A-Four-Dable tickets and choose
them in the confidence they’ll
be able to get everything they
need at a consistent everyday
price, with the convenience of
shopping and supporting local.
With our combination of specials
and our new A-Four-Dable
everyday option, our customers
can now have the best of both
worlds” says Heath.
“It’s fantastic to be able to
bring new ideas to life at
Four Square Redcliffs, at
the moment everyone is
watching the dollars,
so looking out for the
A-Four-Dable shelf
tickets makes Four
Square Redcliffs
a really easy
place to shop
for the every-
day things you want and need
while supporting your community
store.”
So come on in, check out the
Local Deals and new A-Four-
Surf club engages with community
Tayors Mistake Surf Life
Saving Club volunteer
Dave Mills reports on
what is happening at the
club
THE TAYLORS Mistake Surf
Life Saving Club is in great
shape. Our volunteer lifeguard
talent and depth is strong. Our
junior programme is bulging
at the seams with enthusiasm
and numbers, and our new
clubrooms will be finished in
December.
The club is also very proud
of its high-performance programme
for those who choose
to compete in addition to their
volunteer lifeguard role.
The club recognises that the
world has changed, and as more
of the wider community are
likely to enjoy more of the local
environment this summer, our
volunteers are very ready to help
the community enjoy the beach
and stay safe.
To try and reach out to the
community, a small community
engagement project has been
developed and is now underway.
We are using our social media
sites (Facebook and Instagram)
to introduce the community to
some of our volunteers, and to
allow our volunteers to tell our
TALENT: Josh Ryan on Taylors Mistake beach creating a community engagement video
for the surf lifesaving club which features Georgia (left) and Lucy Stroud. (Above right): The
new clubrooms under construction.
story to the community. We are
fortunate to be helped with this
project by Josh Ryan, a talented
postgraduate marketing student
from Canterbury University.
Each week we will post short
video clips fronted by our volunteers,
as they seek to highlight in
their own way the beauty of Taylors
Mistake, what the beach and
surrounds has to offer, and to
highlight that the public should
feel very confident approaching
our friendly volunteer lifeguards
to ensure they stay safe and enjoy
their day at the beach.
We even have a surprise in
store with a video clip during the
summer from one of our famous
Taylors lifeguard TV stars!
We are reaching out to the
community to highlight our volunteers
as real people, with real
day jobs and diverse personalities.
They are all passionate about
the beach that they help keep
safe. We are a small club, but we
are hoping that as people engage
with and share our videos on
social media, more of the public
will see the talent we have in our
volunteers. We hope that the
public will recognise just how
approachable our volunteers are.
We are delighted that the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation has
supported this project. We see
strong alignment with our values
and the values that the foundation
promotes.
Stay close to our social media
sites over the summer and check
out the stories of some of our
volunteers.
Our volunteers will be
patrolling the beach each
weekend and on public holidays
starting from Show weekend.
Remember – swim between the
flags.
When we call, hundreds
of Kiwi businesses answer.
At Fire and Emergency, 80% of our people are volunteers, many running or working at businesses
just like this. In an emergency, their businesses proudly allow them to rush out and help.
Preparing young for life’s adversities
Myriad groups help
keep our community
moving. Reporter Bea
Gooding speaks to
Life Education Trust
Canterbury community
engagement manager
Andy Gray about why
the trust has been an
iconic fixture in schools
for the past 30 years
and why he’s involved
Could you tell me a bit
about what the Life Education
Trust does, and how it came
to be what it is today in
Canterbury?
The Life Education Trust
started over 30 years ago, which
started in Canterbury. There’s
now 32 regional trusts across
the country, and one national
branch. The vision is to inspire
tamariki and rangatahi to make
positive choices and to give them
the power to do that. The trust
addresses challenges including
obesity, substance use, mental
health and well-being and
bullying.
We operate in three mobile
classrooms in Canterbury,
they’re like big container shells
that have been turned into
classrooms and are moved
around different schools –
whether it was as far as Omihi in
North Canterbury, right down
to Rakaia. Whether schools have
35 students or 500 students, we
end up making our way there no
matter where they are.
What issues is the trust
currently facing in the wake of
Covid-19?
Quite a few in all fairness –
when Covid-19 hit during the
first lockdown, even though we
were still continuing to support
the teachers and tamariki during
lockdown, we didn’t get any
school fees come in, and the
funders that we usually used
were all closed down.
It’s been tough, but we
managed to get through it
and we’re in a better position
now. We reached out to a lot
of people that have done quite
well throughout Covid-19, like
supermarkets, and to the Rata
Foundation and Lottery Grants
Board who have helped us out.
With Covid-19 it’s a doubleedged
sword. It’s great that
we’re busier now and we’re
looking to expand to a fourth
classroom because of it. But the
double-edged side of that sword
is obviously with increased
demand it means that more
people are affected, there are
higher anxiety levels.
We’ve learned a lot about
mental health from the
earthquakes in the past 10 years
and also the mosque attacks
where kids have been affected.
Things like a lack of employment
that comes from it just filters
through to the kids, so we expect
to see increased demand over the
next few months.
The trust has been iconic in
Canterbury schools for the past
30 years. What do you attribute
towards its success?
Obviously, the most
memorable thing about Life
Education is Harold the Giraffe.
But the reason why I think we’re
so iconic is because we tend to
react to the issues currently at
hand.
‘It’s the kids’ reactions which I find the most rewarding’
•From page 11
We don’t get any government
or Ministry of Education funding,
so we aren’t led by their
agenda, and it’s why we’re the
number one health education
provider. We don’t want to be led
by what they want, which is why
we work with teachers to adapt
[the lesson]. I think that’s what
makes us so successful.
Why did you decide to join
the trust?
I’ve got a wee eight-year-old
boy and things are a little bit different
now than back in my day;
kids have got different challenges
now, so I just wanted to make
sure I was getting in touch with
what was going on. Kids seem to
be a lot more involved and more
aware of what’s happening around
them because of social media and
access to the internet. That was
my excuse to get involved and
understand what’s happening in
my own child’s head.
What are the rewarding parts
of your job?
The kids – when Harold comes
on board, the kids wander in and
when they see him, they all get
pretty excited to hear what he
has to say. It’s the kids’ reactions
which I find the most rewarding.
Like most jobs, it’s not always
fun and games. What can be
challenging about your role?
I think seeing the statistics
that are pretty grim, like when I
hear about the teen suicide rates
or how many kids are stressed.
About 35 per cent of kids are
stressed at least once a week.
It’s like, bloody hell, these kids
are eight or nine-years-old, they
shouldn’t be stressed, they should
be watching Pokémon on TV or
something.
Tell me a bit about where life
began for you – where did you
grow up? How about family?
I was born in Salford, UK.
When I was about 13-years-old
my folks decided to ship us all
over, with my brothers and sister,
and start life afresh over here. I
ended up going to school down
the road at Christchurch Boys’
High School, and eventually at
the University of Canterbury.
After travelling overseas for a
while, I came back and became
the director at Specsavers (Papanui)
after opening up a franchise
here. After selling that I was
lucky that I had a bit more free to
pick and choose the jobs I wanted
to do, and that’s when the Life
Education Trust job came up.
BIRDS OF THE ESTUARY
ICON: The Life Education Trust has been visiting Canterbury
schools for more than 30 years.
My two brothers live in Sunshine
Coast and Gold Coast in
Australia. My sister is here in
Christchurch so she’s not very
far from me, and my parents
are retired now and live in the
Hurunui District.
Do you remember much from
life back in England?
I remember quite a lot of it. It’s
quite a rough spot where we were,
a lot of cars were being nicked
every night and there were a lot
of fights, you could just watch it
from your window - that’s what it
was all to me.
One of my favourite parts
about my home town is the
football, everyone enjoyed a bit
of soccer. You could play it in
the streets, you’d just jump over
the back fence after school and
go play with your friends in the
streets.
Aside from your work, what
do you like to do in your spare
time?
I enjoy any sport, especially
soccer being English and all.
I’ve always the idea of making
something myself so I make short
films on the side.
I make any type of short film,
it’s just a matter of writing a
script and trying to gain funding
to do it.
I’ve always loved movies, the
idea for me growing up was to
become either a football player, a
fireman or a moviemaker.
Tanya Jenkins is the manager of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, a non-profit organisation formed in 2002 to
protect one of New Zealand’s most important coastal wetlands. This is her last Birds of the Estuary column. A new column
will start next week – Estuary Matters.
Greenfinch is a sparrow lookalike
THE GREENFINCH was introduced
from England when some 100 birds
were released here between 1862 and
1868.
Like many other introduced birds,
they rather enjoyed our environment
and settled here nicely with the result
that they are now commonly found
throughout New Zealand.
This greenfinch is a small bird and
is actually often confused for a house
sparrow due to its size and its plain
brownish colourings. But then spring
arrives and the male produces its
stunning green and yellow breeding
plumage and certainly can no longer
be called plain.
Nests are being built in early spring
when four to six eggs are produced, and
this can be repeated twice during the
nesting season. The female incubates
the eggs alone but is assisted by the
male who will bring her food to the
nest to save her from having to leave the
eggs alone. Feeding the chicks is done
by both the parent birds.
They are not fussy eaters and they
will eat most tree seeds, but the seeds
of the pine trees do tend to be their
favourite and that is why you may
have seen the greenfinches along the
South Brighton side of the estuary
more often than the hillside.
Apart from seeds though
they will also at caterpillars, aphids,
moths and other small bugs. Fill up
your bird feeders, the greenfinch is
easily attracted by “wild bird seed”
available from supermarkets.
If there is less than about a cup
of liquid in the pot, add a little
Contacts
by Mark Watson
The unforgettable new book from award-winning writer
and comedian Mark Watson. One man’s last journey. One
hundred and fifty-eight chances to save his life. James
Chiltern boards the 23:50 sleeper train from London to
Edinburgh with two pork pies, six beers and a packet of
chocolate digestives. At 23:55 he sends a message to all
158 people in his contacts, telling them that he plans to end
his life in the morning. He then switches his phone to flight
mode. He’s said goodbye. To him, it’s the end of his story –
and time to crack open the biscuits. But across the world, 158
phones are lighting up with a notification. Phones belonging to his mum.
His sister. His ex-best friend. The woman who broke his heart. People he’s
lost touch with. People he barely knows. And for them, the message is only
the beginning of the journey. Funny and wise, tender and deeply moving,
Contacts is a beautiful story about the weight of loneliness, the importance
of kindness – and how it’s never too late to reach out
Betrayals
by Bridget Collins
From the Number 1 bestselling author of THE BINDING. If everything
in your life was based on a lie Would you risk it all to tell the truth? At
Montverre, an exclusive academy tucked away in the mountains, the
best and brightest are trained for excellence in the grand jeu: an arcane
and mysterious contest. Léo Martin was once a student there, but lost
his passion for the grand jeu following a violent tragedy. Now he returns
in disgrace, exiled to his old place of learning with his political career in
tatters. Montverre has changed since he studied there, even allowing a
woman, Claire Dryden, to serve in the grand jeu’s highest office of Magister
Ludi. When Léo first sees Claire he senses an odd connection with her,
though he’s sure they have never met before. Both Léo and Claire have
built their lives on lies. And as the legendary Midsummer Game, the climax
of the year, draws closer, secrets are whispering in the walls…
Directions
Select about 12 of the best berries
for the top. Put the rest in a
saucepan with 3 tablespoons of
sugar and the water.
Bring to a gentle simmer, then
cook for about 2min. Place the
cut sponge pieces in the bottom
of a clear glass bowl. Add the
Grand Marnier and allow it to
soak in. Ladle in the strawberries
and juice.
To make the custard, beat the
egg yolks and sugar until light and
thick. Heat the milk and vanilla
bean in a heavy-based saucepan
until almost boiling. Tip the hot
milk onto the egg mixture in a
bowl and stir well to combine.
Rinse the pan that the milk
was heated in, return it to the
heat and strain the egg, sugar and
milk mixture into it. Carefully
reheat the custard, stirring constantly
until the mixture thickens
enough to coat the spoon.
Do not let this boil, as the mixture
will curdle. If the mixture
starts to curdle around the edges,
immediately remove from the
heat and whisk vigorously until
smooth.
Once the custard is cool,
tip it over the strawberries.
Finally, lightly whip the cream
then spread it over the custard.
Decorate with reserved halved
strawberries. Chill before serving.
We usually work with about 670
2020 has been hectic.
The importance of businesses
ChristchurchNZ is helping identify opportunities for people to reskill and move into other sectors
Higher unemployment impacts
more significantly on those in
lower skilled roles and our
vulnerable populations – Māori;
Pasifika; young people not in
employment, education or
training; and our long-term
unemployed.
And what are we doing?
We are supporting the journey
for labour market priority groups
– school leavers, tertiary
graduates, NEET (young people
not in employment, education or
training), impacted workers,
Māori and industry.
To ensure work isn’t duplicated,
Covid-19-related support.
Peri Drysdale, chief executive
of Untouched World, told us that
while technical support was helpful,
“it’s been really nice to know
people are out there looking after
the business community”.
“The support we received will
make the climb out of this much
more effective and has set us up
for growth,” Drysdale said.
I’ve also been working personally
with Jed Joyce, the founder of
and to identify gaps, we are
mapping the support available
from iwi, central and local
government agencies, our
education providers, charitable
trusts, and other support groups.
Impact projects can then be
delivered to provide support
where needed.
It is critical we ensure our
community has access to the
information they need, and is
aware of the help available.
ChristchurchNZ is developing
regional information resources
and working to ensure this gets
into the hands of those who
need it.
Rollickin’, to help them through
this changing business environment.
They felt the pinch from January
2020 and were forced to close
their Arts Centre store. They were
worried keeping the store open
would negatively impact their
stores on New Regent St and in
Cashel Mall, the latter of which
opened just eight weeks before
the March lockdown.
They reached out for support
We are also developing a
Regional Workforce Plan that
identifies the skills available and
needed now and in the future.
This plan will inform central
government investment and
policy in education, immigration
and community interventions;
and will enable us to better
understand what skills
Christchurch’s future economy
will require. That in turn will
allow us to work with education
providers to ensure the right
courses are offered.
In times of recession we generally
see an increase in people
choosing to study.
This is an opportunity to upskill
Canterbury’s relatively
poorly-educated workforce for
our future economy, to generate
more and better jobs, to increase
productivity, and to raise living
standards and wellbeing.
Sound of thunder from V8 SUV
THERE’S LITTLE doubt that
the way we view automobiles is
changing with a global demand
for fuel efficiency and fewer
emissions.
Most manufacturers are
looking at ways to address those
issues, and that’s showing with
an ever-increasing number of
hybrids and electric vehicles
reaching our market.
I’m not rebelling against the
electric revolution, but the reality
is I’ll find it hard to give up my
desire for internal combustion
engines, and the bigger and
more powerful they are, the
better.
Mercedes-Benz has already
introduced an electric vehicle
down under and the company
is indicating more will arrive en
masse.
Where that leaves its big cars,
and the big engines, I don’t know,
but in the interim I can be very
grateful that I’ve sampled some
of the best engines to come out of
Germany, as well as some of the
most powerful.
My latest foray into the highperformance
driveline was in
the AMG GLC 63S sport utility
vehicle, a mid-size wagon that
also comes in coupe-like form,
both sharing the 4-litre, twinturbocharged
V8.
It’s a monster in terms of power
outputs – 375kW and 700Nm –
the latter available all of the way
from 1750rpm to 4500rpm and,
if you take into account peak
power is on tap all of the way
to 6250rpm, it’s no wonder I’m
hooked.
The GLC is a super-quick,
high top speed wagon, and you’d
expect nothing less from the
performance arm of Mercedes-
Benz. AMG claims a 3.8sec
standstill to 100km/h acceleration
time along with a governed
250km/h top end.
These figures are fantastic,
making the GLC one of the
quickest cars I’ve driven, and it
does so in a way that you know
you are travelling fast; even in
standard mode the engine is
quite audible, it bellows out of
the exhaust and if you want extra
sound a console-mounted pushbutton
will increase the decibels.
The 63S fairly thunders under
acceleration.
This engine is utilised in a wide
FUNCTIONAL: A cavernous load area lies under the tailgate
of the GLC 63S.
MERCEDES-BENZ GLC AMG 63S: Speed and acceleration which is uncharacteristic for a
sport utility vehicle.
range of Mercedes-Benz product,
and in some cases it drives
through to the rear wheels
only, delivering a true sports
car feel, but the GLC has drive
to all four wheels and that adds
an element of reassurance. As a
driver, you know that delivering
that power to the ground is going
to be channelled in a fashion
that won’t catch you out with
oversteer.
If you also take into account
the huge 21in wheels with
massive tyres then grip levels
are high. Even so, on my highcountry
evaluation drive there
were a couple of instances
when I felt traction control
complaining, such as powering
out of a corner.
Drive is channelled through
a nine-speed automatic
transmission, and there are
varying drive modes that the
driver can select or individualise
to suit his/her driving style.
Even in standard mode the
engine management protocols
are structured so that the driver
can enjoy the V8 experience at
all times; it rumbles and burbles
away, tantalising with its response
and urgency.
• Price – Mercedes-Benz
AMG GLC 63S, $184,400
• Dimensions – Length,
4744mm; width,
2090mm; height,
1577mm
• Configuration – V8,
four-wheel-drive, 3982cc,
375kW, 700Nm, ninespeed
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 3.8sec
• Fuel usage – 12.2l/100km
Not that it is a handful in lowspeed
situations, the 63S
has perfect inner-city manners,
the combination of brawn
and beauty is an engineering
masterpiece.
The GLC is a true SUV, it
has a cavernous rear load area,
and for five adults there is
comfort in abundance. It is
also built in the traditional
Mercedes-Benz style that is high
in luxury and specification,
sharing the look and feel with a
layout that is systematic across
most of the Mercedes-Benz
range.
Column space doesn’t allow
comprehensive detailing of the
features and fitment. However,
it’s fair to say the GLC wants for
little and the interior is state-ofthe-art
with all of the electronic
goodies you’d want in a car
that sits towards $200k. Yes, if
you add in a lot of the options
from Mercedes-Benz’s extensive
catalogue of extras, the base price
tag of $184,400 could be well
stretched.
However, for my money the
pleasure to be had from the
fabulous bi-turbo engine would
be well worth the outlay. And
don’t go believing that it is going
to overly create havoc with the
environment, as, for all of its
brute force, the GLC 63S has
respectable fuel usage figures.
AMG claims a 12.2-litre per
100km combined cycle average,
which sits well with the trip
computer’s 12.8l/100km figure
during my time in the car.
I know for certain the drive
in the GLC 63S won’t be my
last in a V8, but I do know such
opportunities will become fewer
and further between.
For those who feel like me, now
is the time to buy before they face
extinction.
