Servite News – Fr. Paul
I had earlier written that I would include news about the
Servite community in the bulletin. Blessed Cecilia Eusepi
was a tertiary of the Order of Servants of Mary born in
Viterbo on February 17, 1910. (In the revised calendar
this is the Feast day of the Seven Holy Founders). She
died at the age of 18 on October 1, 1928. She completed
her elementary education guided by Cistercian cloistered
nuns. In her diary she emphasized the impact of Jesus in
the Eucharist on her spiritual life. She had a strong desire
to consecrate herself to Our Lady of Sorrows. In February
she joined the Servite Third Order and received its scapular
and cincture. In 1923 she joined the Mantellate Sisters
of Pistoia. She was in her second year of formation when
diagnose with intestinal TB. Fearing contagion to the Sisters
she returned to her home. She wrote the account of
her spiritual journey in an autobiography and diary. Her
message to us is that we are nothing before the Lord and
that we belong totally to Him. It is wonderful to sing one’s
love of Jesus and His and Our Mother. She was beatified
on June 17, 2012.
A series of earthquakes struck the Emilia Romagna
area of Italy between May 20 and June 4, 2012. The Servite
Church in Budrio is unsafe for Mass, the Parish
Church of Galeazza Pepoli is unsafe with seven in the
town dead and 6500 homeless. The Servite Sisters had
planned to celebrate their 150 th anniversary in the Parish
that week. Since these events a clearer picture of what
happened has evolved and the Servite General Treasurer
in Rome is coordinating donations.
A new Servite community has been founded at Deir
Rafat, Israel, the Shrine of Our Lady of Palestine. St.
Peregrine is the patron of the Servite Parish in Muntinlupa,
Philippines, it had been entrusted twenty seven
years to the Order and on May 6th was elevated to the
status of a Diocesan Sanctuary of St. Peregrine. A record
of testimonies and cures is kept at the Sanctuary. Many
Filipino tourists to the United States stop off at the National
Shrine of St. Peregrine at Our Lady of Sorrows in
Chicago and the Grotto of Our Sorrowful Mother in Portland
Oregon.
There is a three year period between each Servite
Chapter of Election, our USA Province celebrated in February,
Canada, Mexico, Philippines, and India in April,
Piedmont Romagna (Italy) and the Province of the Isles
(Ireland and England) in June. Please continue to pray
that young men and women consider joining Servite religious
life in its locations here in the States and throughout
the world. Also remember to keep the Order’s General
Council under the leadership of Fr. Angel Ruiz Garnica,
OSM and its members, especially Fr. Eugene Smith,
OSM in your prayer.
