Dear Friends of Immaculata, 

With a new academic year comes the positive energy that emanates from our 

4,500 students. Their tenacious spirit and countless gifts embody the core values of 

Immaculata. They are the reason we are here, and none of this would be possible 

without your generous support. 

last year was a challenging but exceptional year for Immaculata. enrollment in 

the College of undergraduate Studies hit an all-time high of 1,001 students. 

the numbers of students enrolled in the College of Graduate Studies and the College of 

lifelong learning also remained strong. 

We are pleased to announce progress in Immaculata’s academics and in its campus. 

The new pre-licensure nursing program, in its first full year, was a major feature 

among our program offerings. We have added new academic programs, such as the 

bachelor’s in Athletic training and the doctorate of Higher education. We dedicated 

a brand-new baseball field in the spring of this year, and we are in the process of 

building a beautiful Admission and Financial Aid Center.

The 2010-2011 academic year at Immaculata University was one 

of continued growth and achievement across a wide range of 

areas and departments. In accordance with Immaculata’s mission 

statement, “With belief in the dignity and potential of all men 

and women, Immaculata integrates students into a community 

of service and empowers them to assume meaningful roles 

in a diverse and changing world,” the University implemented 

a variety of new initiatives inspired by its core values of 

caring, learning, integrity, faith, teamwork and service.

The Office of Academic Affairs provided 

leadership and oversight of a number 

of accomplishments during the past 

year. Highlights include: the hiring 

of eight new faculty members and 13 

administrators; the application, receipt 

and oversight of grants (SepCHe, ItAG, 

pHeF, and NSF); development of new 

programs (ed.D. in Higher education 

and B.S. in Athletic training); effective 

and resourceful management of off-site 

program delivery; enrollment of more 

than 2,800 students in totally online 

courses, and the graduation of close to 

850 students. enrollment in the College 

of undergraduate Studies (CuS) hit 

a startling 1,001 on opening day, the 

first time in Immaculata’s history to see 

enrollment of this size, with the College 

of lifelong learning (Cll) and the 

College of Graduate Studies (CGS) 

sustaining stable enrollments in times 

of increasing competition and economic 

challenges. The faculty development and 

institutional outreach process supported 

faculty and students in representing the 

university at local, regional and national 

professional meetings. The faculty also 

taught Immaculata students in the day, 

evening, and on the weekend, online, 

on- and off-campus, and throughout 

the fall, spring and summer. More than 

4,450 students were provided the valued 

opportunity of an Immaculata education. 

A major initiative in the academic 

affairs area centered on creating 

learning outcomes for graduates of 

Immaculata university, and the design 

of a compliance matrix to satisfy the 

pennsylvania Department of education 

(pDe) requirements for documentation 

of activities. enrollment in CuS was 

a major focus with concentration on 

enrollment initiatives and retention 

strategies. The hiring of a new Associate 

Vice president for Academic Affairs has 

led to a reorganization of positions and 

greater dexterity in the use of data to

drive recruitment planning. Initiatives 

have been directed by the new Director of 

Academic technology, whose expertise in 

organization and collaboration is leading 

to better communication and cooperation 

among constituents responsible for 

technology in the service of academic 

affairs. The excellence of Immaculata’s 

nursing program was acknowledged by 

a successful Commission on Collegiate 

Nursing education (CCNe) visit and 

the awarding of the excellence in 

Holistic Nursing education Award. 

The 87th commencement took place on 

May 16, 2011, with the ceremony held at 

the Valley Forge Convention Center. The 

Immaculata Medal was awarded to John 

p. Foley, S.J., who has demonstrated an 

extraordinary commitment to Catholic 

education, faithful service to students, 

and a zeal for empowering young people 

from economically disadvantaged 

backgrounds. Benjamin S. Carson, 

Sr., M.D. received an honorary degree 

for his outstanding medical service, his 

dedication to addressing societal issues, 

his encouragement of young people in 

their pursuit of education, and his active 

promotion of community service to people 

of all ages. Dr. Carson also delivered 

an inspiring commencement address. 

student development 

And engAgement 

Student Development and engagement 

(SDe), whose theme for the year was 

“Contextualization,” and whose goal 

is to “assist students in acquiring an 

understanding of self,” developed a 

new model, Iu AWARe (Immaculata 

university, A Welcoming and Respectful 

environment), that aligns programs and 

services through specific avenues and 

topics. At this time, the six categorical 

topics are: spirituality, community 

development, mental health, respect/ 

civility, multiculturalism, and sexuality. 

Built into the model is the principle that 

what SDe provides for students and 

how it serves students is aligned with 

the teachings of the Catholic Church 

and the mission of the university. This 

model, though in its infancy, already has 

been evident in programs and services 

prior to this academic year, and now 

helps each university department to 

expand student outreach, providing 

an inclusive environment. The newest 

education and support mechanism for 

the campus community, Associates With 

Accurate Knowledge and education 

(AWAKe), was approved by the 

Board of trustees in January 2011. 

While SDe continues to create a 

welcoming and respectful atmosphere 

on campus, many departments in the 

division helped to create a positive 

experience for students. The athletic and 

recreation program provides studentathletes 

with an educational framework 

for developing positive attitudes and 

building character. This year, Immaculata 

officially began track and field as an 

intercollegiate program with the indoor 

and outdoor seasons. Iu now boasts 19 

varsity programs. eight teams reached 

the Colonial States Athletic Conference 

(CSAC) tournament, and women’s soccer 

and women’s basketball finished as the 

CSAC runner-up. The university’s brandnew 

baseball stadium opened March 9 

with Immaculata defeating Arcadia 7-5, 

and the facility was officially dedicated 

on April 18, with another Immaculata 

victory over eastern university. 

The Campus Safety and protection 

Department had a productive year, and 

the campus continues to be effectively 

monitored and is a safe place to both 

live and work. Highlights for the 

department include a 10 percent reduction 

in reported crime on campus; a CCtV 

system upgrade with ptZ cameras 

installed to provide surveillance of 

parking lots B and C; the One Card 

program remains a viable part of the 

department’s protocol; and the selective 

mass notification system, e2Campus, 

continues with 2,455 validated users.

The Office of Career Development (OCD) 

provides vocational guidance, education, 

and personal support to students and 

alumni as they engage in the career 

development process and chart their path 

toward lifelong career achievement. This 

year, Career Development offered a new 

series of online videos and automated 

tutorials on a variety of career topics; 

a modified workshop schedule was 

implemented; a Facebook page was 

created to help with promotion and 

advertisement of events, and there are 

now 90 individuals who “like” OCD’s 

page and receive notification of events 

and helpful tips; a newsletter, “Catching 

up With Career Development,” 

focuses on a new topic each month and 

corresponds to the information board 

in Nazareth Hall; and the online career 

development system, Focus2, continues 

to assist students with their search for 

a major, career, and self-assessment. 

Highlights from the Dean of Students 

Office include the Commuter 

Connections program under the 

supervision of the Assistant Dean of 

Students; it continued into a second year 

with a marked increase in the number 

of events offered. This academic year 

also saw an increase in commuter and 

off-campus students grow to 48 percent 

of the CuS student population. The 

Commuter Assistant and Chair of the 

Commuter Council worked closely with 

the Assistant Dean in the planning, 

promotion, and implementation of 

the first Commuter and Off-Campus 

Student Week held in April 2011. 

The Sophomore year experience 

(Sye), also under the auspices of the 

Dean of Students Office, continued 

into a second year and followed the 

model established in the pilot program 

to meet the development needs of the 

sophomore student population. The 

Assistant Dean of Students and the 

Director of Career Development worked 

together to provide leadership for the 

Sye program. Several students who 

participated in the pilot program were 

involved in planning, presenting, and 

facilitating sessions at the Sye escape 

weekend retreat held in October. 

Residence life and Housing (RlH) 

has continued to cultivate areas that 

were developed during the previous 

academic year. From the addition of 

Housing Operations personnel to the 

implementation of the “I AM an Iu 

Resident” accountability campaign, the 

expansion of the programs and services 

offered by RlH has been at the forefront 

of SDe’s accomplishments this year. 

Student Health Services continues to 

provide first-class health care to the 

Immaculata community, while also 

presenting appropriate educational 

programming that is individualized to 

the population and focused on health 

promotion and disease prevention. Some 

key accomplishments this past year 

include: providing hand sanitizers and 

hand washing information/education to 

the Iu community in the cafeteria on 

Oct. 15, which was Global Hand 

Washing Day; the annual Fall Health 

Fair on Nov. 4; collaboration with 

the Iu Student Dietetic Association, 

Residence life and Housing, and 

Athletics to organize Stamp Out 

Hunger 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on Nov. 

13; institution of the 100 Miles for 

Health program, combining exercise 

and giving back to the community; and 

the initiation of “Soap Notes,” monthly 

newsletters designed to educate the 

community on various health topics.

AdministrAtion 

In the 2010-11 fiscal year, Finance 

and Administration saw continued 

growth and improvement. While 

conducting daily business is still the 

primary function of the F&A area, some 

notable developments during the year

included construction and dedication 

of the new baseball stadium in time for 

the men’s baseball team to play its first 

home game at Immaculata. The design 

of the Admission and Financial Aid 

Center was completed and construction 

began in April. The construction of the 

loyola Hall parking lot was completed, 

and four modular classrooms were 

installed outside of loyola Hall. 

The Vice president for Finance and 

Administration secured a commitment 

from Jack Brennan, Chairman emeritus 

and Senior Advisor of The Vanguard 

Group, to visit and speak at Immaculata. 

Finance and Administration also helped 

organize and contributed to the fundraiser 

for the Duffy’s Cut research project. 

Implementation of the main components 

of Ceridian, a web-based payroll software 

product, was completed, along with 

implementation of a process to comply 

with new Direct loan regulations. The 

first required 403(b) audit was completed 

without any major findings. A budget was 

prepared with a projected surplus in excess 

of $1 million, and recommendations 

were made that the university begin 

contributing to dependent health care 

coverage, plus a suggested increase 

in the university’s tIAA/CReF 

contribution rate to 8 percent. In the area 

of information technology, there was an 

upgrade to MACnet to accommodate 

current and future multimedia 

requirements, providing a more flexible, 

stable, reliable, less expensive, better 

performing network and It resources. 

New websites for Duffy’s Cut and the 

Mighty Macs were created in support 

of university marketing efforts. 

Barnes & Noble introduced “NookStudy,” 

a free, downloadable program that is a 

comprehensive e-textbook reader and 

study solution that gives students the 

tools to study across all content and 

formats. The bookstore began a textbook 

rental program providing a significant 

up-front savings for the students,

University Communications 

and the bookstore is fully compliant 

with the current Higher education 

Opportunity Act (HeOA) laws. 

The Facilities Department completed 

4,962 work orders and 5,137 preventive 

maintenance work orders; successfully 

completed annual inspections of the 

boilers, chillers, fire alarms, fire pumps, 

backflow devices, fire extinguishers, 

and exhaust and fume hoods; installed 

emergency eyewash stations in loyola, 

Alumnae Hall, Villa Maria, and the 

Gabriele library near chemical mixing 

locations; replaced the carpeting on 

the first floor of Villa Maria and in all 

of the classrooms in Good Counsel; 

repaired the halo on top of the Villa 

Maria dome; and replaced the blinds and 

window treatments in the Faculty Center 

offices, the Guest Dining Rooms, and 

the Villa Maria residence hall rooms. 

personal Choice (ppO) medical plan was 

opened for enrollment effective July 1, 

2011. employees had an opportunity to 

enroll during open enrollment from May 

2011 through June 30, 2011. twenty-one 

new enrollees were added to the personal 

Choice roster effective July 1, 2011. The 

university also began to contribute to 

dependent coverage for medical insurance, 

with the new schedule paying $100 

toward the cost of parent/child coverage; 

$200 toward the cost of parent/children 

and employee/spouse coverage; and $400 

toward the cost of family coverage.

Institutional branding for Immaculata 

university received a tremendous boost 

this year with the hiring of the new Vice 

president for university Communications. 

The new Vice president brought with him 

a top graphic designer and web analyst/ 

designer and, later in the year, another 

designer and a writer were hired for the 

area, growing the division from 3 ½ to 

caring 

8 ½ people in a short period of time.

broad range of audiences for marketing 

using a variety of media, from billboards 

to bus wraps in philadelphia and 

New Jersey to a fresh focus on social 

media, including youtube, twitter and 

Facebook. Immaculata’s new branding 

began in full force with a “Find your

Mooney; Theresa Shank Grentz ’74, IU vice president for University

Higher power” theme in the fall, followed 

in the spring with a new marketing 

campaign, “What Makes Immaculata u?” 

In October, the university partnered 

with the philadelphia 76ers during 

the home opener against the Miami 

Heat and its star, leBron James. The 

76ers’ organization offered sponsorship 

opportunities before, during and after 

the event, with the Mighty Macs from 

the championship teams honored at 

halftime. A special Iu dance troupe 

performed a routine to Michael 

Jackson’s Thriller; the university 

Chorale sang the National Anthem and 

Immaculata cheerleaders encouraged 

the crowd to get behind the 76ers. 

Innovation and creativity quickly 

became a hallmark of university 

Communications. It was a matter of 

thinking outside of the box to bring as 

much positive press and publicity to 

Immaculata as possible. partnering with 

Comcast Sportsnet, Immaculata joined 

a select group of advertisers utilizing the 

new virtual signage for Flyers hockey 

games. Visible on television and cable, the 

Immaculata brand was seen by millions 

of viewers throughout the season and 

appeared in countless sports news clips. 

Iu partnered with the phillies to have a 

permanent sign at Citizens Bank park, 

as well as laser signs displaying unique 

Iu messages throughout the season. 

And staying on the topic of innovation, 

the university Christmas card also was 

translated to an e-card that was emailed 

to thousands of Iu students, alums and 

friends. The university also sponsored 

an offshore racing boat that went on 

to win both the national and world 

championships. The idea behind the 

boat was to target a male audience while 

maximizing the recruiting potential of 

the Jersey shore and surrounding areas. 

The fall and winter seasons were 

highlighted by marketing initiatives 

including special Halloween bags

Christmas season, which were printed 

and inserted into the 24,000 Sunday 

Daily Local News newspapers. 

Assisting the College of undergraduate 

Studies with its ongoing marketing 

efforts, the Communications Office 

sent 70,000 postcards to the homes 

of high school juniors and seniors. 

In December, the division received notice 

that the long-awaited movie, The Mighty 

Macs, would have its opening on April 

1, and the division moved forward with 

planning for the event with print ads, bus 

wraps, and a billboard on South I-95. A 

commemorative website was designed 

(www.yearofthemacs.com), which included 

historic photos, player biographies, rare 

game footage, the movie trailer, and key 

facts about the Macs’ championship years. 

The gala screening of The Mighty Macs at 

The Franklin Institute on March 29, 2011 

became a sold-out event. That same week, 

campus screenings of the film were held 

for students, faculty and staff. Also, a 

special showing of The Mighty Macs was 

held at the university of Notre Dame as 

part of the weeklong celebration with Iu 

administration on-hand for a question 

and answer session and reception. Sony 

pictures later decided to invest more 

money into the distribution of the film, 

which translated to the purchase of 

more theaters for its release, now set for 

October 21, 2011. plans are under way 

for a formal world premiere on Friday, 

Oct. 14, 2011 at the Kimmel Center, 

to be hosted by Immaculata university, 

Sony pictures and Quaker Media. 

A new website for Iu has been designed 

with a fresh look, rewritten content, 

and additional pages for use by all 

constituents. Special advertising projects 

included an in-depth print campaign 


to strategic newspapers that reach the 

Hispanic population; ads in publications 

such as the Philadelphia Inquirer and the 

Daily Local News supporting a variety 

of events; and KyW Radio was used 

to promote graduate open houses and 

registration. The university also became 

the sole sponsor of the news covering 

the Beatification of John paul II on 

KyW Radio. Over 60 media outlets 

worldwide ran an article on Iu’s new 

cell phone photography course; the Wall 

Street Journal ran a feature on Duffy's 

Cut and USA today picked up Iu's story 

on new campus hydration stations. 

universitY AdvAncement 

The Office of university Advancement 

works to develop lasting relationships 

and communicate the mission of 

Immaculata, to foster good will and 

to increase support of education

opportunities for students. During 

2011, there have been targeted efforts in 

cultivation, engagement, stewardship, 

solicitations, and personal contacts. 

A business model for the entire 

advancement program was created to pull 

together all components of a structurally 

sound and strategic operating plan 

to build a solid base of philanthropic 

support. The university Advancement 

Office raised more than $2.5 million 

for endowment, capital, restricted and 

operating funds, a 7.1 percent increase 

over 2010. Classes ending in 1s and 

6s celebrated their reunion in 2011. Iu 

alumni philanthropic support to the 

university had a 34.3 percent increase 

in dollars, and a 30 percent increase in 

donors during this celebratory year. The 

Director of Corporate, Foundation, and 

Government Relations has continued to 

build relationships with local corporations, 

foundations, government organizations, 

and federal and state legislators. This year, 

the director’s primary efforts concentrated 

on grant writing and initiatives 

surrounding The Mighty Macs film. 

Golfers at the 35th Annual 

Immaculata Invitational at 

Stonewall, Elverson, PA. 

Grants awarded this year came from 

the Catholic philopatrian literary 

Institute; the W.W. Smith Charitable 

trust; the Avon Foundation for 

Women; the Chester County economic 

Development Council; the pennsylvania 

Department of Community and 

economic Development; and the 

pennsylvania Department of education. 

The 2010-11 academic year was the second 

year for the Office of Strategic Initiatives. 

The Director oversees specific projects 

to support university Advancement in 

all areas, and during the past year, these 

activities covered a wide array of projects, 

including the university’s Manual/ 

Handbook project. Initiatives for 

Academic Affairs included development 

and submission of the self-study for a 

new program in Athletic training, and 

for a new doctoral program in Higher 

education. In addition to assisting in 

various capital projects, providing support 

on personnel search committees and 

participating in the completion of grant 

and funding applications, the Office of 

Strategic Initiatives has collaborated 

with university Advancement members 

to maintain political support and 

awareness of the university in spite 

of the fact that federal earmarks were 

nonexistent this past year. Ongoing 

efforts were maintained with the 

Commonwealth of pennsylvania 

representatives for support of Immaculata. 

Fiscal year 2010-11 for the Immaculata 

Fund was highlighted by an increase in 

unrestricted giving over last year, and 

the acquisition of 244 new “unrestricted” 

donors. Collaboration with the Director 

of Major Gifts on Reunion Class giving 

resulted in total giving of $125,763 

from Reunion Classes. The solicitation 

cycle included personalized mailings 

to all alumni, parents and friends, and 

efforts were made to better code each 

mailing to track solicitation efforts. 

A record number of members to the 

Heritage Society has been added over 

the last five years, with 127 current 

members. More than $230,000 has 

been received in 2010-11 in direct gifts 

to the endowment, plus six bequests 

totaling more than $401,000, bringing 

the total endowment amount to 

$14,669,929.66. The most significant 

increase was in the area of donor estate 

plans, with a total of $12,162,332.79. 

Quality faculty, loyal administration, 

and energized students eager to succeed 

converged successfully in producing 

another outstanding, productive 

year for Immaculata university.
