ROSS MACKENZIE

PLYMOUTH RAIDERS DIRECTOR

Well, it’s great to be back! It isn’t life as we

know it, it isn’t even basketball as we know

it, but we’re back and for that alone, we’re

thankful to BE, the BBL and the Department

for Culture Media and Sport for their support

and for enabling Elite basketball in the UK to

continue.

Basketball has a significantly unique role to

play amongst our communities and young

people who face the greatest of challenges

and barriers to engagement in sport and life

chances.

BBL clubs and indeed many across the NBL

divisions work tirelessly to promote the game

and to engage, support, and educate with

those close to them and that message has

thankfully struck a chord at the highest

echelons within Government. Basketball finally

appears to be part of the national sport

conversation. During times of immense difficulty,

while other indoor sports have decided they

simply cannot understandably continue for the

time being, basketball will stride out confidently

from the shadows. In no uncertain terms, this is

a huge opportunity and moment for the game

in this country.

So, our attention turns without delay to the

BBL Cup and what will be a fast and furious

round of matches for our Plymouth Raiders and

indeed all BBL clubs.

What better way to get our season underway

on Friday night, than the always fiery, fist

pumpingly good derby day win against our

old adversaries, Bristol Flyers.

Despite the 14 day isolation period, Coach

Kapoulas in his 7th season managed to get his

team up for the game, and while both sides

looked rusty, it was a tight game, Raiders

eventually pulling away to close out a 69/54

win with an MVP performance from Will

Neighbour on 18 points.

Attention turns today to Worcester Wolves

and Matt Newby’s 2nd season at the helm.

Today’s game is their entree into the season

and the Cup and with returners Jordan

Williams, Maarten Bouwknecht and Daniel

Johnson-Thompson and former Surrey

Scorcher Henry Wilkins joining the ranks

alongside imports Kimble, Anderson, Parks

and Lawson. Expect an organised, well

coached team and a tough test for Raiders.

For us here at the club, after a Summer of

watching and waiting for developments, we’re

excited to be back, with a revamped squad,

some familiar faces, and with a team Coach

James has high hopes for. Andrew Lawrence

will soon make his long awaited Raiders debut

as he recovers from a hamstring pull, alongside

former Royals team mate Ashley Hamilton, two

superstar Team GB talents who Raiders fans

can expect big things from this season.

Talking of big, we’re absolutely delighted to

welcome Prince Ibeh direct from the Lone Star

State – Texas, who has high ambitions to get

Raiders into the trophy hunt this season. With

experienced BBL campaigner, still only 26 years

old, Elvisi returning, Elliot Sentance making the

step up and “local” lad Denzel Ubiaro entering

his 4th Season for us, it’s all set. Ryan Beisty will

give us depth and Will Neighbour will provide

as always, leadership, experience and some

huge knock down 3’s and tremendous passing

vision. We’re excited to welcome Chris Porter-

Bunton who starred in Europe this past year

and comes ready to make a big impression with

a tough approach to Defence and a reputation

as a super versatile scorer.

Behind the scenes over this past few months,

we welcome our new GM Phil Hughes as we give

our thanks and fondest best wishes to Heather

Nash who departed last month after 7 years

at the club. Heather oversaw two periods of

significant change for the club and her

contribution will be long remembered.

Our volunteers including our new Cheerlead

Squad led by Emilie will all return soon and are

working harder than ever to be ready when

called upon to return, our match day volunteers

including Tony and Irene Smith who for now,

have been helping to prepare the Pavilions for

our imminent start, our media team including

Rebecca, Damian and Jack who have all made

significant contributions in recent weeks,

months and years but also going forward.

We thank them all.

Also a formal introduction, in some cases reintroduction

to our support team - Assistant

First Team Coach Danny McGee, Academy

Coach Paul Nicholson, Community Coach

Ben Fox and our Head of Sports Therapy,

Elliot Cockrell.

I would also like to thank the team of Directors

here at the club, who have all worked through

a very difficult period not only managing their

own businesses but also ensuring your Plymouth

Raiders have a bright future, one you can be

proud to continue to support.

Our Club President Enver will be watching our

games closely and cheering us all on and will

join us at the first opportunity. He sends his

heartfelt thanks, a message of good health

and best wishes to all the Raiders family at this

most difficult of times.

Finally, at a time of great uncertainty, we thank

you more than ever for your support. Our fans,

our sponsors, educational partners and the

entire Raiders family. Your generosity and

passion for this club cannot be thanked enough

in a few simple words. Our ambition is to be

successful for you. You deserve it, and we’ll do

everything we can to make that happen.

Go Raiders!!!!

Foxy, fresh from a starring role in the new series

of children’s animated books in partnership

with Jamie Talbot, is literally itching – (could

need a de-flea’ing to be honest) to get going,

and hopefully not breaking any backboards

this season. He passes that baton to Prince.

ROSS

MACKENZIE

DIRECTOR

Alpaslan Aydin and the Bahçeşehir Koleji team

in Turkey have been supporting the club during

the past several months and have been working

closely with Coach James and the Raiders

office team, forging new alliances and building

a new future across continents for both

organisations. A truly unique and exciting

partnership.

PAUL JAMES

PLYMOUTH RAIDERS COACH

Good afternoon and welcome to the

Pavilions Plymouth for this BBL Cup match

against Worcester Wolves.

These are certainly strange times we are

living in the moment, but we have to be

grateful and thankful that we are able to

start the basketball season when so many

people are not able to continue with the

work that they do because of COVID-19.

In order for us to be here today there have

been many people working extremely hard

to make sure that we have the right procedure

and processes in place to keep us all

safe throughout and I would like to thank

those people for their efforts and making

this possible, all be it without supporters.

There have been many changes within the

club since March. Changes that we will see

greatly enhance the club in the coming

months and years under the new of ownership

of Enver Yucel. We have had a major

change in the front office with Phil Hughes

taking over the General manager duties for

the club and he has had instant impact in

and around the club.

Changes to player personnel always

happens, but this season I feel we have

assembled a strong, talented, and

competitive squad which will be based

around a solid core of domestic players.

GB internationals Ashley Hamilton and

Andrew Lawrence a long with Will

Neighbour, Elvisi Dusha, Ryan Beisty,

Elliott Sentence, Denzel Ubiaro and Mike

Ochereobia, will see us in good shape.

They are joined by our only two nonnationals

for the time being in Prince Ibeh,

Chris Porter-Bunton a long with some up

and coming young talented students from

Marjon university basketball programme,

I feel we have a good mix of players and a

lot to work with.

With the delayed start to the season we

start off with the BBL cup pooled with

Bristol Flyers, Worcester Wolves and Surrey

Scorchers and we play each team home

and away. This will be our first competitive

games as a team so they will be fact finding

games.

It is a tough schedule we have with 5 games

in 10 days and 6 in fifteen. Make no mistake,

we will know where we are by the end of

this period and would have learnt a lot as

a coaching staff and a team ahead of the

BBL championship starting.

I have been looking forward to the games

starting and to see what we can do this

season with this group of players. I am

positive for the campaign ahead.

Your support at home games will be sorely

missed, but I am hopeful that you will be

able to join us by watching our games online

and supporting us in this way!

I extend a warm welcome to Worcester

Wolves coaching staff and players for this

BBL Cup group match.

Enjoy the game. GO Raiders!!!

PAUL JAMES

COACH

WAY BACK WHEN

... THE SEASON WAS CANCELLED

It seems ages since we were able to watch

the Raiders at the Pavilions. 246 days, 19

hours and 30minutes to be exact but that’s

all long forgotten now right? Not exactly, we

are now in lockdown 2.0 and although we get

to watch games, it’s from our own homes.

It was at the Pavilions where the season

ended for the Raiders on Friday 13 th March,

four days before the season was postponed.

An 82-86 loss against the league leaders, but

not champions, Glasgow Rocks ended a few

active months for the Raiders. New owners

were announced, changes to the roster were

made looking to push the side into the

playoffs, fans looking forward in excitement

and then coronavirus affected the country

making many streets and buildings quiet,

the Pavilions being one of those.

The home to the Raiders since 1996, it has

always been known as a loud venue and

tough place for visiting teams, so it certainly

will be different on game days for a little

while to come. The Pavilions closed their

doors on 20 th March and they haven’t been

opened since. Like all the arts venues, it has

been tough for them, so we should consider

ourselves lucky to be able to play this

season’s games here, even if it is without

a crowd.

At times we weren’t even sure if the season

would go ahead and at this time last year

we were seeing the end of the group stages

in the BBL Cup. Our visitors today went on

to win the competition, however Raiders did

inflict them with a 30 point defeat in this

fixture behind 17 points and 13 rebounds

from Tyrell Johnson. Worcester, along with

Raiders other opponents in the early stages

of this competition, Bristol and Surrey, are

the only teams Raiders have defeated at the

Pavilions in just under two years, so I’m sure

coach PJ will look to continue that run

before hopefully additional fixtures will

be released in the Championship and

Trophy competitions.

As we have already seen, with Bristol unable

to fulfil their first two games, there will be

disruption this season. With the exciting

signings over the summer, the anticipation of

the game we all love returning and the ability

to support the team in alternative ways

than rocking up to the Pavilions on a Sunday

afternoon, we should be grateful we have

something to look forward to.

PLYMOUTH MARJON BASKETBALL PROGRAMME

in Partnership with Plymouth Raiders

Welcome, to the fans, partners, and

colleagues of Plymouth Raiders

Basketball Club.

as Denzel Ubiaro, Isaiah Walker and Liam

Langridge Barker named to the professional

team in the recent seasons and more to expect.

We are the Plymouth Marjon University

Basketball Programme, a programme

dedicated to developing the U23 Basketball

Player alongside their Undergraduate or

Postgraduate degree at Plymouth Marjon

University, existing in the pathway

partnership with the Plymouth Raiders

Basketball Club.

In the last 2 years, we have had positive

success, from the students graduating,

undefeated league and cup records,

winning finals, introducing a second programme

team, players stepping up into the professional

team roster and in 2020 having a winning

league season, with our competitive ambition,

to be in the top-flight BUCS Premier! However,

the completition of competition was disrupted

by COVID, in March.

We worked hard during the summer with our

student recruitment and are pleased with

the compliment of new student athletes we

attracted to the University to compete under

the Plymouth Marjon University and Plymouth

Raiders Brand. As part of this new season

Plymouth Raiders announced a second men’s

team to the franchise, Plymouth Raiders II

comprised of student athletes that have the

opportunities to progress in the game and

would play in Basketball England’s NBL.

It is fair to write, we have had to embrace

challenges similarly to many others with

the fluctuation of access to training,

competition with the barriers of COVID,

but we have remained safe, trained successfully

and hope to continue in the pursuit of

our ambitions. We have a programme mantra

‘Be where your feet are’, referring to being

present, control the controllable, take value

for the moment. We will continue striving with

our students to achieve this, academically and

sporting and supporting the well-being of our

athletes in the climate of this pandemic.

Whilst the games, are not yet to commence,

we are preparing on and off the court, we are

working in this moment and for the moment

we wish to create ahead, for players nationally,

for the players in the south west, it’s clubs,

academy’s and community. We are encouraging

sponsors, partners and independent businesses

to join, contribute and aspire to inspire the

fantastic environment, student and operations

of our programme, we have young ambassadors

across social media, events and competition,

who have positive contributions to make.

LADIES

After a strong finish to last season, following

on from the open trials and finishing with

2 wins for the last 2 games, the Plymouth

Raiders Ladies were all set for a good year.

However, with just a single training session

under our belts before the lockdown, our

plans were abruptly halted.

Keeping a constant eye on the Basketball

England guidelines and Return To Play

Roadmap, we were finally able to start

training again in early August, (albeit outdoors

only)...but that was a very welcome

opportunity.

The outdoor sessions allowed us to ease

back into our fitness, whilst giving the new

girls a chance to bond. Amazingly, we were

able to pick up 4 more new recruits over the

lockdown, and we now have the luxury of

a waiting list to keep the squad at full

capacity for the foreseeable future.

However, as the year rolled on, dark nights

and bad weather shortened our evening

sessions, so it was great to be back indoors

by mid-September.

Although restricted to bubbles of 6 per

half-court (with no mixing of bubbles),

not even the virus could stop the ladies

training hard in preparation for next season.

The improvements have been huge,

the talent is above and beyond anything

we could have hoped for and the chemistry

within the team is amazing!

With the under 16 girls squad back underway

and filling up fast, there’s never been

a better time to be a part of women’s

basketball in Plymouth. We’re excited to

see what this new ladies squad can achieve,

but even more excited for the future of

women’s basketball!!

Good Afternoon Raiders supporters and

welcome back! The start of the 20/21

season, one of which is going to begin

slightly differently from previous campaigns.

We last got together back in mid-March

when we narrowly lost to the self-proclaimed

‘Champions’ Glasgow Rocks.

Fingers crossed; it won’t be too long before

we are all able to come back together to

get behind our team.

PJ has definitely put together a strong

team this time, with many familiar faces

from previous BBL campaigns. We welcome

back Will, Denzel, Isaiah and Elvisi. We give

a massive HELLO to new players include

Ashley, Andrew, Chris, Prince, Ryan, Michael

and Elliott. They all have a different amount

of experience and some we’ve seen playing

at the Pavilions in previous years.

I’m sure that we know that the start of this

new season has already been affected

by the pandemic, with Flyers conceding

games to Scorchers and games played

behind closed doors. Fingers crossed we can

remotely support our boys via YouTube and

at some point, at the Pavilions, getting loud

and proud and blowing the roof off!

Raiders welcome Worcester Wolves to

play our first home game in the BBL Cup

competition after our away trip to Flyers

on Friday (hopefully was a W).

CHEERLEADERS

Firstly I’d like to say “hello” and thank you for

taking a moment for me to be able to tell you

about some of the exciting things the Cheerleading

Squad have been working on during

both lockdown and over recent weeks.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMMES

The first community programme commenced

at Marine Academy Primary School in early

October. The coaching team are delighted to

be facilitating a weekly session to year 5 and 6

children and look forward to resuming once the

lockdown period is over.

During this past Summer we held a successful

Covid secure audition in partnership with

Chris and members of his Rhythym City Dance

Studio, which proved a huge success and introduced

a number of fantastic new dancers into

our group. While we’re not yet able to perform

at the games for the moment, we can’t wait to

get back on the floor and show you how hard

we’ve been working behind the scenes. I can

also confirm that Foxy arrived unannounced

one evening to bust some moves with us.

Needless to say, watch this space as we look

to tame and direct some of his enthusiasm into

something that looks like a routine!

I’m also pleased to be able to share information

on some of the Camps and Community

Programmes we’re running, some of which

we’ve already announced, but I’m pleased to

be able to list below - we’d love to have you or

a young family member join us, it’s fun, fitness

based and designed as an introduction to what

we do;

CHRISTMAS CAMP

The Christmas Camp is planned to be held on

the 19th December at the YMCA 12:00 – 16:00

with 11 spaces remaining available. To book

your place, head over to Instagram/FB account

for further details.

ACADEMY SQUAD

The Academy Squad consists of 30 children

between the ages of 11-16 year olds which

I am delighted term one is already full. The

Academy will provide opportunities to younger

members of the community, whilst developing

dancers to feed into the main squad when

they come of age. The Academy will enrich

and enhance development, build self-esteem

and positive social skills. The main aim will be

to provide a healthy positive atmosphere for

dancers to experience challenge whilst making

new friends and having fun. We look forward to

the Academy squad joining our side on

court for performances when we return to

some normality.

Please take every chance to follow us on all of

DEVELOPMENT

We went into lockdown in March and

unfortunately had the end of 19/20 season

cut short. Over lockdown we kept in contact

with our players via Zoom to help them work

on their game at home. Coaches also had

to get used to having online meetings, and

were fortunate enough to have a number

of high calibre guests from the UK and

around the world to enable us to build on

our coaching knowledge and skill set. We

even held online end of season presentation

evening!

Thanks to our partnership with Tor Bridge

High Sports Centre, we were back on court

in August, albeit outside, which allowed us

to get in some valuable preseason work, although

the weather wasn’t always that kind

it was fantastic to be back on court. And this

also allowed us to get used to the new Covid

protocols.

At the end of September, we safely ran our

annual team trials and had in excess of 120

children try out for our training squads! All

teams have been back training now for a

month and the appetite and enthusiasm of

all the players has been great to see.

Unfortunately, we have come to a halt again

now just as we were due to play our first

games of the season , hopefully we will be
