They didn’t hit the can, man. As for “Give a hoot, don’tpollute,” they never evenheard Woodsy Owl’s message. And despite an aggressiveeffort to clean up all the trashon sidewalks, near creeks,at the beach and blowingaround streets, Malibu waslooking worse for wear. That’s where the Clean UpMalibu Day comes in. OnOct. 27, more than a dozencity staff, community membersand representatives ofother agencies fanned outacross town, trash bags andtrash grabbers in hand, tryingto add some sparkle to thismagical place.Or, as Jeremy Wolf, districtdirector for Democraticstate Sen. Henry Stern, whose district includes Malibu, put it, “A small group ofvolunteers got together tryingto do something for theircommunity.”City Manager Reva Feldmantook part, as did HeatherGlaser, the city clerk, andall were in their safety-firstfinest.Surfside News taggedalong. After meeting at CityHall, the group split up andheaded off to their assignedlocations. For Mayor MikkePierson, that was SurfriderBeach.“This spring and summer, with COIVD, is the mostpeople we’ve ever seen inMalibu, easily, by far. Completelyoverwhelmed, overrun,”he told Surfside News.“One weekend, I think itwas Labor Day (Supervisor)Sheila Kuehl’s officesent out help for the trash. We sent out city help for thetrash, and Monday morningthe entire city was still completelyburied in trash.”“It’s really sad, all thevisitors coming,” Piersoncontinued. “I understandthey need to get out of townbecause of COVID, and it’sbeen hot, but it’s been really, really noticeable and tragic, the amount of trash, andwe’ve been unable to keepup, to be honest.”As he spoke, the mayorused his grabbers to pick upsmall pieces of paper, plasticbeverage holders, even abroken wine bottle.Pierson noted that a greatamount of trash the city wastargeting was generated onother agencies’ property, the bulk of it Los AngelesCounty.“Including where we’recleaning up right here,” hesaid. “This is not our property.”But there’s just not enoughtrash cans, not enough peopleto pick it all up, Piersonsaid.“With impacted budgets,it’s a difficult situation.”GOING RATE Malibu Sales and Leases | Week of October 30 - November 5TYPE ADDRESS List Price Sale Price Beds/Baths Sold Date Days on MarketSingle Family32802 PacificCoast Hwy.$9,495,000 $9,650,000 3B/5B 11.2.20 39Single Family 2919 Valmere Dr. $1,475,000 $1,350,000 3B/4B 10.30.20 115Lease 3000 Sequit Dr. $12,000/mth $12,000/mth 4B/4B 10.31.20 58LeaseLeaseLeaseLease29500Heathercliff Rd.#2129233Heathercliff Rd.#429500Heathercliff Rd.#23529458 BluewaterRd.$6,700/mth $6,700/mth 3B/2B 11.2.20 38$3,900/mth $3,900/mth 2B/2B 11.4.20 1$8,000/mth $8,000/mth 4B/3B 11.4.20 12$4,500/mth $4,500/mth 1B/2B 11.3.20 10Land 0 Sea View Dr. $3,395,000 $1,450,000 N/A 10.30.20 44LandCondoCondo5961 FlorisHeights Rd.21212 PacificCoast Hwy.26668 SeagullWay #D101$1,100,000 $1,090,000 N/A 11.5.20 2$3,995,000 $3,500,000 2B/3B 10.30.20 115$795,000.00 $790,000.00 1B/1B 10.30.20 11Statistics provided by Bobby LehmKuhl with The Address | Malibu Information gatheredfrom Combined L.A./Westside MLS, Inc. is deemed reliable but not guaranteed.Contact Bobby at (310) 456-0220.Top 3 reasons to subscribe toMALIBUSURFSIDENEWS.COM:• Daily updates on everythinghappening in Malibu fromCity Council meetings androad construction to localMalibu businesses andresidents helping each otherduring this time• Up-to-date informationon our coronavirus pageincluding stats and localMalibu stories• Links to important resourcesfor families, businesses andMalibu residentsSIGN UP TODAY FOR A 2-WEEK FREE TRIAL!MALIBUSURFSIDENEWS.COM/FREE-TRIAL
