infirmaries, or there are the aspirations to leap above and beyond
and into future conditions when uncertainty is part of the past. It
would be inauthentic to say that in his planning for the installation
of the Portus and the current installation that Dietrich Klinge had
prescience to know specifically what would befall humanity in 2020.
However, it is honest and authentic to recognize that in his work,
his collecting, his orchestration of choruses and duets, his conversation
across time, he offers an allegory, a parable about humanity’s
ability to express existence and perseverance. If Gustave Courbet
gathered together and worked among a populace of the streets and

gathered a history of physical and intellectual calm above a moment
of calamity. The Portus shelters not just objects and ideas, histories
and humanities. Through Klinge’s work and installation, the Portus
shelters stability and hope.
