Stretch and SupportAs children move through the school, teaching is organised in sets for bothmaths and reading. This ensures learning moves at the right pace and providesthe right level of challenge for every child.We recognise that many of our children will need extra support at some timeduring their school career. Strand’s learning support team work with children inclass, individually and in small groups to provide an appropriate intervention,whether for a brief period or on a longer term basis. We aim to identify eachchild’s particular needs as early as possible; regular standardised testingenables us to screen for difficulties and monitor progress. We work closely withfamilies from the outset, keeping parents informed about progress and thesupport and challenge we put in place. Where necessary, we draw on advicefrom our educational psychologist or other experts within a skilled team ofprofessionals.As an important first step, we work closely with our Infant colleagues to ensurea smooth handover, making sure we continue their good work.The Swan CentreOur most exciting joint venture with the Infant School to date is the developmentof The Swan Centre, our provision for children on the autistic spectrum. Thecentre provides 27 places for children from the ages of 4 to 11 and sits at theheart of both our site and our school. The Swan Centre provides a safe andsecure environment where children can learn core skills each morning, whilstoffering opportunities to integrate into the mainstream classes each afternoon.Therapies are provided on site and we work closely with specialists to continuetheir valuable work in class.All applications to the Swan Centre should be made via the SEN department ofthe Local Authority.8
Extra-Curricular ActivitiesWe are committed to educating children to have healthy lifestylesWe encourage children to walk or cycle to school and make sure there areplenty of opportunities for exercise with the Daily Dash, Active AM and aplethora of after school clubs.The staff are keen to use all their skills with as many children as possibleand so volunteer to run clubs each term.These change termly, depending on the talents and interests of the staff, buta selection of recent offerings are :Board gamesSketchingFilm clubQuidditchDjembeRunningSewingLegoFootballSingingNetballGardeningCodingLego RobotsArtChessWe also offer clubs from outside providers such as Taekwondo,Skateboarding, Cooking, Yoga, TechnoKids or Streetdance.
