Our Curriculum
Our curriculum and the way we teach it, is shaped to support and challenge every
child to achieve their best, both now and in the future. It is a curriculum designed
to be rigorous, engaging and ambitious. It’s not set in stone but adapts to different
learners and fresh ideas.
We know that core skills are pivotal. Our aim is for
every child to be fluent in spoken language, reading,
writing and number through daily English and
maths lessons. Alongside focussed practice, we
develop the power of imagination and the logic
needed to figure out problems.
When selecting a curriculum approach we listen to
what the research tells us. Our maths scheme is
aligned to the proven Singapore philosophy that
equips children with highly effective reasoning
strategies.
Equally, we recognise the life-long benefits of
reading for pleasure, hence the huge emphasis we
place on books. The Strand reading spine includes
novels that teachers share aloud with classes, as
well as numerous stories that children study for
themselves as they become experienced readers.
Alongside English and maths is a breadth of other
subjects, all of which contribute to a well-rounded
experience that offers something for everyone.
Children speak French, wrestle with computer
programing, create their own artwork and construct
products they have designed,
Science, history and geography underpin our topic
framework with content carefully selected and
sequenced so that foundational knowledge builds.
As their understanding in these subjects grows,
children grapple with more complex issues and
answer big questions like ‘’Were the Dark Ages
really dark?”.
