What do we want for your child?
Your child is part of our vision, not only in the hugely important years
they are with us, but beyond their time here, in the legacy they will take
with them for the future.
The Strand Vision
is an enriching education that challenges minds and touches hearts, as
we take Strand learners beyond what is expected to discover what is
truly possible.
Taking our learners beyond …….
Our Core Principles
Our principles define us. They shape our ethos, underpin our purpose and drive our aspira
Learning has the power
to inspire and to change
lives.
We have high
expectations of every
child to be the very best
that they can be.
Warm and welcoming,
we are an inclusive
school that embraces
diversity.
Our aim is to build
scholarly habits across the
breadth of subjects so
knowledge multiplies,
skills advance and deeper
thinking flourishes.
For us, great teaching and
a well -
designed curriculum go
hand-in-hand to create
the rich educational
experience that is the
hallmark of Strand.
By creating opportunity,
we expand horizons; by
offering challenge, we
raise the bar. Sometimes
there are barriers, but we
work to overcome them.
The supportive culture at
the heart of Strand
ensures that we do our
utmost to offer a helping
hand.
4
Our children and families,
from all walks of life, come
together to create the
community spirit that
unites us, with mutual
respect front and
centre. We must all play
our part in ensuring
there’s no place like
Strand.
tions. This is what we stand for at Strand Juniors.
The Strand values are the
bedrock of conduct and
character.
They permeate all aspects
of school life, cultivating
attitudes of respect,
messages of responsibility
and capacities to think
beyond oneself.
Just as our values instil the
pride of belonging, so they
set Strand children on the
path of local and global
citizenship.
Strand learners each
have something unique to
offer which gives Strand
its spirited feel.
We never lose sight of
each child as an
individual: nurturing
strengths, enthusiasms
and talents; building the
confidence to speak out,
step up and the resilience
to bounce back; finding a
space for each child to
succeed, make mistakes,
try the unknown, feel pride
and thrive.
Keeping children at the
heart of what we do
demands a motivated
staff who are determined
to go the extra mile.
By engaging with the best
ideas in education and
sharing our successes, we
ensure that every child
benefits from an expert
team behind them.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum and the way we teach it, is shaped to support and challenge every
child to achieve their best, both now and in the future. It is a curriculum designed
to be rigorous, engaging and ambitious. It’s not set in stone but adapts to different
learners and fresh ideas.
We know that core skills are pivotal. Our aim is for
every child to be fluent in spoken language, reading,
writing and number through daily English and
maths lessons. Alongside focussed practice, we
develop the power of imagination and the logic
needed to figure out problems.
When selecting a curriculum approach we listen to
what the research tells us. Our maths scheme is
aligned to the proven Singapore philosophy that
equips children with highly effective reasoning
strategies.
Equally, we recognise the life-long benefits of
reading for pleasure, hence the huge emphasis we
place on books. The Strand reading spine includes
novels that teachers share aloud with classes, as
well as numerous stories that children study for
themselves as they become experienced readers.
Alongside English and maths is a breadth of other
subjects, all of which contribute to a well-rounded
experience that offers something for everyone.
Children speak French, wrestle with computer
programing, create their own artwork and construct
products they have designed,
Science, history and geography underpin our topic
framework with content carefully selected and
sequenced so that foundational knowledge builds.
As their understanding in these subjects grows,
children grapple with more complex issues and
answer big questions like ‘’Were the Dark Ages
really dark?”.

Learning that Transforms: Teaching that Inspires
Investing in sport with a dedicated PE team
Our team of specialists deliver sport across the
school. We organise competitive Inter house
events to include all children while entering our
elite sportsmen into local competitions to develop
team spirit and good sportsmanship in all. In Year
3 and 4 every child has the opportunity to learn to
swim.
Passionate about music
We also have a specialist music teacher who
teaches singing and djembe across the school
while all children in Year 4 learn a brass
instrument. Performance is key and our children
have performed at the Festival Hall and taken
part in the National Brass Band Championship.
Our choirs regularly sing in the Hounslow Summer
Festival and other local events. We partner with
Hounslow Music service to provide a wide range
of instrument tuition from guitar to saxophone.
Exploring the World
Learning doesn't just take place in the classroom.
To bring our curriculum to life we take children out
of school to see and experience the world first
hand. This includes cultural events, museum visits
and a range of outdoor trips. We also run two
residential visits to Suffolk and Devon where
children take a big leap of independence as they
try their hand at surfing, building dens and
working as a team.
By the time children leave us at the end of Year
6, we expect every child to be proud of all they
have achieved and be excited to know there is
still so much more to learn.
Stretch and Support
As children move through the school, teaching is organised in sets for both
maths and reading. This ensures learning moves at the right pace and provides
the right level of challenge for every child.
We recognise that many of our children will need extra support at some time
during their school career. Strand’s learning support team work with children in
class, individually and in small groups to provide an appropriate intervention,
whether for a brief period or on a longer term basis. We aim to identify each
child’s particular needs as early as possible; regular standardised testing
enables us to screen for difficulties and monitor progress. We work closely with
families from the outset, keeping parents informed about progress and the
support and challenge we put in place. Where necessary, we draw on advice
from our educational psychologist or other experts within a skilled team of
professionals.
As an important first step, we work closely with our Infant colleagues to ensure
a smooth handover, making sure we continue their good work.
The Swan Centre
Our most exciting joint venture with the Infant School to date is the development
of The Swan Centre, our provision for children on the autistic spectrum. The
centre provides 27 places for children from the ages of 4 to 11 and sits at the
heart of both our site and our school. The Swan Centre provides a safe and
secure environment where children can learn core skills each morning, whilst
offering opportunities to integrate into the mainstream classes each afternoon.
Therapies are provided on site and we work closely with specialists to continue
their valuable work in class.
All applications to the Swan Centre should be made via the SEN department of
the Local Authority.

Extra-Curricular Activities
We are committed to educating children to have healthy lifestyles
We encourage children to walk or cycle to school and make sure there are
plenty of opportunities for exercise with the Daily Dash, Active AM and a
plethora of after school clubs.
The staff are keen to use all their skills with as many children as possible
and so volunteer to run clubs each term.
These change termly, depending on the talents and interests of the staff, but
a selection of recent offerings are :
Board games
Sketching

High Expectations
We strive for excellence in all we do and aim for the highest possible
standards attainable for each child, educationally and personally.
Academic Expectations
We are extremely proud of how our children achieve throughout the school,
leading to strong outcomes at the end of Year 6.
Headline measures in reading,
writing and maths combined
consistently show that children
at Strand are well prepared for
the next stage of their education.
Expectations of Behaviour
We have high expectations of all our children and pride ourselves on having high
standards of behaviour, reflected in our strong values.
Our work is grounded in the Strand Values
Cooperation, Commitment, Courage, Empathy, Independence, Friendship,
Reflection, Respect, Responsibility and Reflection,
10
Ambition for All: Striving for Equity
We value children’s opinions,
and encourage them to take an
active role in determining change
and driving improvements in
their school.
Class Councils meet regularly
chaired by children.
Democratic decisions made in the
Class Council influence the
working of the class whilst wider
issues are referred on to the
School Council.
We run mock general elections
that teach children about British
democracy, taking the opportunity
to prepare them to be citizens of
the future.
Personal Development
We want our children to learn to be their own person, to think and act
independently yet always consider others, making the right choices even when no
one is watching.
Encouraging social harmony, we develop respect for the beliefs of all members of
the Strand community. We want every Strandite to be an active member of their
community and experience the bond of shared values that unite and guide us.
In so doing they will experience what it means to be part of something bigger
than themselves, learn to get along together and feel the pride of belonging to
our school.
Transition to the Juniors
The majority of children will join us from Strand Infants in Year 2; we work hard to
make the short move across the playground as smooth as possible,
Our transition programme builds independence, supporting children to face
change in a secure environment, providing vital practice for the next big move to
secondary school.
Smooth Transition
Our comprehensive program of transition activities are designed to make sure your
families’ transition to life at Strand Juniors is a smooth one. Behind the scenes we
work closely with our Infant colleagues to make sure we know your child well even
before they join us.
Secure Start
We want every child to make a secure start and so when your child joins us our
focus is on establishing expectations, developing routines and building
independence. Our experienced, talented team are always on hand to listen, offer
support, encouragement and guidance as your child settles in. We value the strong
relationships we build with our community; everyone who joins us becomes a
member of the wider Strand family whose voice is listened to and appreciated.
