ABDI SETIAWAN

Born 1971

Abdi Seawan’s work is installaon-based, and features half or life-size

sculptures of everyday Indonesians in various social sengs. A very skillful wood

carver, he makes mainly wooden sculptures along with fibre glass hand-painted

unique replicas or edions. His rendering of the figures are not only realisc but

also infused with humorous sare.

Abdi Seawan’s sculptures return to the skill of wood carving while deploying

the arst’s enre imaginaon and percepon to depict the Indonesian human

figure. The work takes form as a spaal arrangement, which presents the

atmosphere of a city corner such as a waing room, bus terminal or shopping

mall; a representaon of a fragment of the acvies of city dwellers – which

wait, come and go – just wryly. The realisc rendering of the figures pokes us

with sare so that we smile away our embarrassment in recognising our own

behaviour reflected. Today’s life and culture are those of the city – with all its

complexity of problems: populaon explosion, insufficient dwelling space,

transportaon, excessive consumpon, crime and poverty. The advancement of

modernity and its related humanitarian problems are becoming obvious in urban

life. Direct involvement in aempt to familiarise himself with the atmospheres of

certain corners of the city as well as the characters of the people there, almost

always prevails in Seawan’s process of making works.

INDRA DODI

Indra Dodi makes an effort to simulate childlike drawings and joyous spontaneity

on his usually large canvases with expressive, art brut, naïve style but with a

refined manner. The layered colours, the noon of composion and structures,

together with the detailed figures which appear to have their own characters,

reveal the careful thought behind his painngs.

Born 1980

A graduate of the presgious Indonesian art college in Yogyakarta, ISI

(Indonesian Instute of the Arts), and a pupil of Yunizar, his works have been

exhibited abroad, as far as The Netherlands and Germany. With already some

solo and group exhibions in Asia, in South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, The

Philippines and of course Indonesia, Indra Dodi is one of the most successful

Indonesian contemporary arsts.

24

AYU ARISTA MURTI

Born 1979

Ayu Arista Mur is one of the few female arsts in Indonesia. Her works evolve

around the theme of love and harmony among living organisms. “Nature, in all of

her aspects, is beauful”.

In her creave process to achieve an art work, the intellectual thoughts as well

as natural processes are equally important. She absorbs things from different

sources and let herself inspired by manga comics, but also wrings and books.

Ayu Arista Mur intenonally chooses different environment and weather

condions in and around her studio to allow nature directly influence the result

of her works. The elements like sun rays, wind or breeze, damp or water, dust or

dirt should make an integral part of the end result. Working with many kinds of

media at the same me, Ayu will somemes work under the glaring tropical sun

to allow the paint to dry quickly. She will then bring the painng to a more

shadowed area to allow strongly diluted paint to spread and dry its transparent

layer on the canvas. And these will later on be coloured and modified with so

pastel, charcoal, dust or dirt. And a piece of cloth, metal or wire will later be

applied.

25

EDDIE HARA

EddiE haRa is one of the few among the Indonesian contemporary arsts, who

has succeeded in finding a new visualisaon vocabulary.

His colourful, layered works are a clash between children's innocence and raw

street life, charaterised by the urban murals quality. A mixture of fresh wildness

of children's mischievous fantasies and the more generic raw art in his works,

eventually emerging to a new painng genre.

Born 1957

Typical of his works are the recurrent figures of jellyfishes, squids, rabbits, the

hat-wearing shoes/boots, and human skulls that are scaered flying and

tumbling all over his canvas. Their contour lines and colours connect and cross

the confined borders. The painng seems thus to be just a ny fracon, a mere

frame in this endless connuity. Eddie Hara's works keep dealing with various

themes and sub-culture mindset: from environment deterioraon through the

absurdity of contemporary people's life.

26

ARWIN HIDAYAT

Born 1983

Arwin Hidayat combines primive and contemporary mofs for his works on

paper and in his painngs, and also by folk art inspired refined unique bak

pieces. Although many of his works are inspired by his personal experiences and

thoughts, his works of art can be seen as a subtle manner to pose quesons

about socio-economic and moral situaon in Indonesia.

Arwin Hidayat loves the medium bak. It is tradionally a method to decorate

cloth with mofs, paern or designs using colour dyes and wax. It requires quite

an elaborate manner of painng (wring) by hand, unlike the modern printed

texle producon for the mass. Although the method can be found in many

places in (South-East) Asia, in Java especially this method of cloth decorang has

found its high refinement, where every move has its own meanings, and whom

are allowed to use depending on the gender and even ranks of social and

heritage. The traces of these bak painngs can be found in his works on paper.

Arwin Hidayat's artworks have been selected several mes for ArtJog, the

annual & presgious contemporary art exhibion in Yogyakarta.

27

AGUS PRASETYO

Agus Prasetyo's artworks are an interesng mix of different media. Painngs of

wood block prints, mixed media (texle, paper) on canvas.

Although Agus Prasetyo creates painngs nowadays, he used to make

woodblock prints. Wood-block prinng is an ancient method to produce

repeve mofs or text on paper or texles. This method were used to make

hand-printed bak, unl the stamps were replaced by brass and other metals to

make them more durable and allowing more details.

Born 1976

In his new works Agus Prasetyo recycles in a way his old works, or more

specifically fragments of his older woodblock print works, with pieces of

different kind of texles, threads and paper, finished by lines drawn by him with

drawing or marker pen.

The painngs are compound of interesng, abstract and colourful blobs,

somemes in the shapes of living organisms or even daily objects.

28

IDA BAGUS PUTU PURWA

Born 1977

Ida Bagus Putu Purwa's (or shortly Purwa) concept of art works is his connuous

search of freedom. His painngs speak about human bodies in a true search and

longing for freedom, realizing that human existence or ones' due rights was

given to them since birth. Although the subjects in the painngs someme take

different shape or posture, they are in fact an expression of himself. For this

reason they are not really different subjects, but merely bodies; embodiments of

the same ulmate subject, the very arst himself. His works are expression of

this quest to freedom and a reflecon of movements and suffering of this urge

to find his dream.

Wearing mask or painted face to hide his agony, these bodies move ll the edge

of the canvas (or paper) as if they are looking to break out of the frame, looking

for freedom outside its confined edges. Jumping high or almost disappear to the

side while running, trying to break out. Many mes they dance with vigorous

movements, inspired by the tradional Balinese dance, they pose anger,

frustraon but also happiness and acceptance. Graceful composion showing

vulnerable strength and light-footed postures bear the weigh of his mental

burden.
