staying too deep for too long. It certainly cut back on the
time I could spend admiring the reef I was at, but it made
one point clear to me: the dive watch is a true example of a
functional analog tool watch, one that can still perform the
task it was designed for, and to great precision even today.
That is the allure of the analog dive watch, even if it has more
powerful modern substitutes today; a functional timepiece
that still looks great in an urban environment.
The “Ghost Captains” at 37mm and now at 42mm are
both stunning examples of solidly built diving tool watches,
both powered by the C07.611 caliber, based off the ETA
2824-2 movement. The enhanced caliber offers a power
reserve of up to 80 hours, and the larger Captain Cook
“Ghost Captain” model is water-sealed to 300 meters,
triple that of its more compact sibling and one-up over the
regular Rado Captain Cook Automatic 42mm models. The
larger format definitely feels more contemporary and 21stcentury
sized on the wrist, paired with a seven-link “beadsof-rice”
style steel bracelet.
What’s also enhanced in the larger model is that the
bracelet offers Rado’s EasyClip System. The system, which
basically has two mobile pins on the spring bars which you
can pull back with two fingers and simply lift the bracelet
off the case, is a convenient at-home solution for strapswapping.
For which we’ve also provided two alternative
straps for the watch, a gray NATO canvas-and-leather
option, as well as a gray calf leather pin buckle strap.
