DEAN’S FOREWORDS

I feel very happy and proud that students of

Stanley medical college are bringing out the college magazine. I do believe

that only rarely our students get to express their extra and co-curricular

talents during this tedious course of study and ‘1938 opus imprevisto’ is one

such opportunity!

I am filled with pride to announce that “1938

opus imprevisto - The majestic collection of unforeseen things” is a

diligent work of the editorial team unraveling all the major events, students

contributions and eminent personalities that this institution has nurtured

since its beginning. This magazine would be a living proof that this institution

inspite of enlightening thousands of lives with its medical service had

also instilled strongly its preaching mottos of brotherhood, teamwork and

tolerance among the young upcoming doctors. 1938 is indeed the hardcopy

of stanlean spirit.

I congratulate the editorial team for their sincerity and harwork in bringing

out this magazine.

With regards,

Dr. R. Shanthi malar M.D., D.A.,

The Dean.

VICE PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD

It is exhilarating to know that the Stanlean annual

magazine for the academic year 2019-2020 is ready after the untiring hard

work of the editorial committee to add to the stanlean glory . “1938 - Opus

imprevisto” as the name suggests is a compilation of the magnificence

of stanlean brotherhood, teamwork and tolerance since 1938 , when

the college officially originated. It has deligiently bought out the skills and

the abilities of the students , thus adding gems to the stanlean crown.

Regards to our respected Dean Madam Dr.Shanthimalar and the faculties

who encouraged and rendered enormous support to this magazine. 1938

is yet another way the students have shown that here in Stanley they not

only learn medicine but also the essence of life. I wish the entire editorial

committee my whole hearted congratulations for their earnest efforts in

etching these precious moments and rendering it immortal in the form of

1938.

With regards,

Prof. Dr.A.Jamila M.D.,

The Vice Principal.

STAFF ADVISOR’S FOREWORD

With a great sense of honor i write this note. It

is an immense pleasure to see the months of hard work bearing the fruit of

success.Working with the team of 1938 has been an incredible experience

. 1938 has successfully captured the emotions of the entire stanlean family

and has presented it in an impressive way. Each and every article has been

taken utmost care of and is presented in a creative manner. The artistic

talents, knowledge, creativity , hard work and the dedication level of the

students is overwhelming.I appreciate the student editors Sadananth and

Preeti and the entire editorial committee for their great effort in publishing

this magazine.

With regards,

Professor Dr.M.Gowrishankar,

Head of the Department,

Dept of ENT.

STAFF EDITOR’S FOREWORD

80 years of brotherhood . 80 years of fame. A college

who’s legacy can never be matched by any other. ‘1938’ stands for

everything that is Stanlean.

The thirst to create something beautiful, something

different is what makes ‘1938’ so special. Photography, art, music, book

reviews ; we’ve got it all. Is surfing through instagram and making memes is

the only thing your good at? well we have a place for you as well.

What makes 1938 special is not its glossy pages or

its vibrant front page. Swollen eyes bereft of sleep; aching fingers from all

that editing; tired minds from all the brain storming- that’s what makes 1938

special.

Kudos to everyone who helped in making this magazine

a grand success. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Long live

Stanlean spirit

1938.

With regards,

Dr.R.Yamuna Devi,

Asst. Professor,

Dept. of Community medicine.

STAFF EDITOR’S FOREWORDS

As they say ‘The best view comes after the

hardest climb’, the students editorial committee have worked so hard

for giving us a splendid view of the memories of stanlean family. I feel

so privileged and honoured of being the staff editor of such an efficient

committee. 1938 is nothing but the product of 80 years of stanlean spirit

and has done justice to its name. Creative ideas, wonderfully presented

and cleverly edited articles, perfectly shot photographs, and fantastically

designed layouts have blended along with stanlean team work ,adding

another feather to the stanlean cap.It is the determination and perseverance

of the editorial committee which consisted of seniors and juniors that has

made it so special. My hearty congratulations to the student editors.

Let’s raise the toast to ‘Many more years of stanlean glory’.

With regards,

Dr.Sivakumar,

Asst. Professor,

Dept. of ophthalmology.

EDITOR’S WORDS

Sadananth S

Editor

Preeti N

Associate Editor

We feel privileged to be the editors of our college magazine, 1938 - Opus

imprevisto. The reason for the selection of this peculiar name ,1938 will

seem to be silly. We had to pick a name that was entirely different from

previous magazines. So , it was decided that the name should be a number

rather than one or two words like the previous magazines . All stanleans

will be familiar with the year 1938 since our college was established that

year.Well, What is a magazine without a catchy tagline ! We came up with

the words Opus imprevisto which means artistic collection and unforeseen

things .The logo designing was not done with adobe apps like the magazine

pages but was done with an online logo creating website. When we had

started designed the first page we didn’t have of any theme in our minds

but we soon found something lacking . While working for Euphoria during

the months of July , Leonardo Da Vinci’s theme had inspired us. So we tried

making some pages with that theme and it went pretty well. We hope this

magazine fullfills everyone, from the photo viewers to content readers.

Long live Stanley spirit.

With hopes,

Editorial committee

STAN HEADLINES

Now that you have successfully turned the pages to reach the middle of our magazine, I think it is

time for some self-realization. Yes, you are going to go through a maiden

venture that attempts to aid you to recall on how it really feels to stay in the realms of Stanley.

Disclaimer :

1. This write up does not aim to target or hurt or to mock the feelings of anyone in general or

particular.

2 . “Why didn’t you include this/ that?” - am eagerly anticipating to hear to this.

3 . This is a mere list and bears no rankings or order.

NO.1

The most modern looking place in the campus that welcomed

each Stanlean on the day of orientation. Carries in its memories

of various events, practice sessions and astounding applauses

and merry moments . That race to hitch with the seats by the fan

keeps up the heat inside the hall.

And that’s the silver jubilee auditorium.

TOP

NO.2

Let’s walk out a few steps, on

the way you smell tea coffee

and cutlets. That small and cute

canteen and co-ops stand to the

right of the Audi. No wonder it

would have shocked any fresher

who learnt that was the canteen

of the college! The cozy co-ops

never failed to quench our tea

thirst, helped us rush inside the

exam Hall with the test notes.

NO.4

This place was the magnetic field

is too very strong to let go of

paired magnets and it may be

called Stanley’s bodhi tree. Few

prefer to stay here all throughout

the day but I’m sure there

would be some who have never

been here. Yes, that’s our library.

Standing tall in majesty serving

the undergraduates postgraduates

and faculties. It stands along with

two ‘OBRR’ ( the own book

reading rooms) and the

xaviour-xerox shops handy and

cool.

NO.3

Not so busy as the railway junction,

certified U/A, hot with

smoking coffees from the canteen

, discussions on

future both hot n cold ever

being made, with ever waiting

delivery guys here and there.

I should say, this place is not

charming as before (for the

construction works and big

machineries coming around.)

Wishing luck to the ones who

have check listed this place.

NO.5

One another library with

books in patient’s

disguise and references

in the form of case sheets

is the Out Patient block of

Stanley. It would not be

a day for anyone in white

coat if not encountered

by at least one query as

‘where is 21? Where is no.

13?’ It enriches anyone

who visited the

op-classes and glances

at the innumerable cases

each day.

NO.6

‘The eyes do not see what the mind does not know’

That only place where we seek Mr. Cunningham

That place where few fainted-on sight. Yes, that’s none other

than our prestigious ‘dissection hall- eye opener to anatomy’ to

any fresher. This place where the hand and mind work in

resolution of a microscope to orient us to what is inside. Thanks

to every tutor and faculty there…we are ever in debt to you.

NO.7

This Hall, old and mundane would remind anyone of Harry Potter

movies they watched. But I’m so sure this fascinated developed

‘love at sight’ on the first day of anatomy class. The benches smell

wood and the gallery architecture of olden days... could they be

found in the modern lectures of today?!

10+1

NO.10

1.2.3. … …. ….. 250

One could easily have a

nap before the

attendance call-out is

over. Those minutes to

test the patience of the

representatives also do

test the skills of giving a

proxy.

NO.8

The Duke of Wellington

confesses “the battle of

Waterloo was won on the

playing fields of Eton.”

Similarly, Stanleans do owe a

strong attribute to their grounds

in shaping their

present and future. Dawns and

dusks, success and failure,

friendship and enmity, bliss and

pain - the grounds

witnessed sportsmanship

conquer it all!

NO.9

Stanley’s hostel is the reason for

so it is called home away from

home! And together we make

a Stanlean family! The hostel

blocks spell I, J and RED and in

them they breed ‘brotherhoodteamwork-

tolerance’ called the

Stanlean Spirit! More than half a

decade we grow in us from

adolescent to an adult, medico

to a doctor. And this is not all

what hostels nurture in us but a

lot more.

NO.11

THE EXAMINATION HALL... Concluding

every year. However, the first-year

exams are too special for we are

reminiscent of our teary, fear ridden

faces and our seniors helping us out to

besiege the battle called exam.

We have not walked all the way through Stanley, but am sure everyone here is walking

through it thoroughly relishing every bit of it.

Making justice to the heading TOP 10+1. I found it right to halt here and dream the rest of Stanley.

Thanks to Raveendranath Anna ( Arceans 13’ ) for inspiring me to write this piece.

A STAN CHRONICLE

Ohh !! you have come already child ! I thought

you’ll be late for the interview.

( saying so she sits down in her chair , calms down

and begins)

Hello all! Welcome to the world I’ve been spawning

for nearly 8 decades .

(Hearing the sound of her new children passing by

,she excuses herself)

Excuse me!

“Children !!

We serve, We rule!

‘Brotherhood, Teamwork, Tolerance’ get that in ur

veins. It’s the only way to progress”

( and she returns)

Sorry! Was just instructing my children.

During British period, people after work used to come and rest in the

choultry. They were provided with free food(kanji).Hence, the hospital

was called as THE KANJI THOTTI HOSPITAL

My familial seeds were sown by The British

East India company back in 1700s.My mom ‘The

Royapuram hospital’ took birth in 1830 under

MADRAS UNIVERSITY’S care. She stands tall eternally

at a site where there used to be the famous

MONEGAR CHAULTRY . She kept serving patients

tirelessly for a nearly a century,when entered a

man - A man with authority. The man who opened

the METTUR DAM across Tamilnadu’s lifeline THE

CAUVERY ! SIR George Frederick Stanley. With all

his might he cut out the Royapuram medical school

from my mother and fabricated the beautiful me. He

also gifted me 72 smart children from all compasses

and sought me to teach them medical science. But I

had other ideas. Beyond medicine I wanted to groom

my children.

They grew, learnt life, learnt to serve, learnt

to be human(e). I nutured them in every

possible way. Every year I got a new 72 children

and I kept providing as many professionals out to

the world to save and serve lives. And they brought

me

laurels and appreciations. Moved

by all these recognitions, our government decided

to gift me 150 children instead of 72 in 1963. I

groomed them the same and recently from 2013 I

started receiving 250 pearls each year- the first college

in Tamilnadu to receive such an upgrade. Uhhh

it’s really getting busy here. Look I successfully foster

1000 children at a time(feeling proud). Impossible

without my mom’s help though. While I teach them

a lot ,they learn medicine mostly from my mom and

thats the speciality my children have ,they learn

more from patients and less from books . Nowhere

else does this happen with such great efficiency. She

accommodates them inspite of all here tight schedule.

Thanks mom!( A quick winky peep across the

road at her mom).

Everytime I see my children (too many yet I fail to notice none) I’m elated. The

way they come here as amateurs and the manner in which they transform ... paaah

marvelous!. Not all get such life’s, do they!? And they give me unforgettable moments

day after day. It’s fun noticing them and their expressions. “Frightful faces “ in Anat

dissection hall. “Fully pink..okay! rethink ...again pink and finally only blink “ scenes in

histology labs. ‘Donating blood for crush’s experiment’ scene in physio lab. ‘Boom and

another blasted hot testtube!’ Scenes in Biochem lab.(She bursts out laughing and then

continues) ‘When will the class start?’ eager look the first week.’When will the attendance

start? ‘ gri look the next week. ‘Half dosed but I’m still listening mam!’ look after

few months. Library romances.....Cute love buds ....Canteen gangs bunking classes to

watch favourite Hero’s movie. Crazy monkey tricks happening in exam halls.... Seniors

instilling discipline in juniors ..... Nothing goes unnoticed. I just laugh at all these and

dont make it an issue because I know how sincere my children are in their work. That’s

what surprises the whole world. Exemplary academic records yet feared during every

sport fest. They enjoy life to its fullest ,conduct crowd luring fests like Stanlea,Euphoria,Empower

year round and yet shine as bright doctors.

You wanted this interview for the magazine right? Hmm hmm ...do you know

when our first student journal was published?? (Continues after a

pause) Way back in 1933... 4 year before i was even made.

It was called “THE ROYAPURAM MEDICO”.

U know wat through your magazine im going to tell a few

secrets to my children. “ Our current college building was

built in 1940 over the SECOND WORLD WAR BUNKER,that

exists even today beneath our college old building under the

name ‘Basement’!. Right underneath the central hall where

the stairs starts are two stairs that will lead u to the basement

war bunker. Their entrance are covered by wooden doors.

( go check out this place). if you wanna know more check out

my alumni students website.

Speaking of the alumnis... They used to go every sunday to

ALAMADHI village near redhills and provide free health care

services to the people inneed .... Though that service went

unattended in between for a few decades ,it was started again,

much to my delight in 2008. But the react storm brokedown the

entire alamadhi facility. I see that you people are taking active steps...

This is the obelisk built in memory

of stanlean’s who had died in

the world war.

but take it as a request from me. Please start going back to Alamadhi and start serving(in

a humble tone)

--------------Silence----------------

(She suddenly comes back to life and says )Ohh ! I forgot to introduce myself ....

I have pride in saying that none of my children has scummed to the world’s pressures.

My children is what I’m all about. I am ur STANLEY MEDICAL COLLEGE. ( and a slow

rising majestic blow from an ivory horn makes her grow huge in stature)

( she continues)

To all my children

“ Don’t be searching me in those brick walls. U can never see your mom when ur in

her womb.Once your out you’ll know me more than anyone else.

He wakes up gasping for air . He tried recall the dream he had just had but in vain. All

he could remember was a huge figure sitting down n moulding itself to form his very

own STANLEY MEDICAL COLLEGE.

Rotaract Club of Stanley Medical College stand unique in work towards building student power for

welfare of the society. One such is AVAL 2K19 symbolizing our support towards empowerment of women.

Aval 2K19 was conducted on 25th April 2019 to showcase distinct qualities through speeches and by the

thought provoking speeches and various forms of art. We try to move little stones for the betterment of

the community, hand in hand with our college.

AVAL’19

My first day at Stanley!

I woke up at 6 in the morning. I was groggy at first and then remembered that it was

1st August 2019 – first day of a major transition in my life- THE FIRST DAY OF

COLLEGE, in the reputed “STANLEY MEDICAL COLLEGE”. I was excited.

I couldn’t wait for college to begin.

I got ready and got into the metro along with my parents using my new metro card. I

was dreaming all the way about my college life – to do almost everything that I had

failed to do or continue in the past 2 years during which I was occupied with

preparations for the competitive exams just like every other student.

When I was reaching my college, I was nervous about everything- making new

friends, coping with studies and especially about the faculty and the seniors.

The kathak dance by a senior was beautiful and mesmerizing and the Stanley Anthem

gave me the goosebumps. My heart went boom-boom hearing the beats.

Then the freshers were

taken to a lecture hall

while the parents were

taken to another. We

were joined by the

student council members.

I expected some ragging

but the seniors assured

that there will be no

ragging, that they will

always interact and be

friendly towards us.

They told us all about the

cultural and events

conducted by Stanley including the various councils under the student council.

Some of us were asked to sing including me. After some time we were asked to

leave, we were finished for the day.

Once I reached the college gates, I noticed the throng of my immediate seniors

waiting outside with big books, some of them discussing and some reading last

minute notes. I just pictured myself in their shoes next year. There was a small

doubt at the back of my mind-

“Have I made the right decision of pursuing medicine?”

We were directed to the auditorium and were welcomed by seniors with smiling

faces. We took our seats and one hour later the programme started. The promos, the

music and the videos were awesome – way better than what I expected in a

Government medical college – can’t explain in words. The words spoken by the

professors and the student council members were clear cut and well reached.

I got a feeling that the faculty will be supportive till the very end as well as

outstanding in teaching.

My parents had already collected my books. They had a session with the faculty which

included various suggestions to keep an eye on their wards. To quote Seenivasan

Sir from Community Medicine-

“Hosteluku 2 dhadava soltu vanga,

3 dhadava sollama vanga. Main-ah

kattilku adila paarunga”.

It was engaging. This was my first

day at Stanley .There is actually more

which is difficult for me to convey.

But I thoroughly enjoyed my first

day. It was actually memorable.

Seeing the college, its students and the faculty, I had a feeling that I have made a right

decision choosing Stanley Medical College and that I will enjoy myself to the core. I

will contribute as much as possible towards my college and live for the

Stanlean Spirit as a true Stanlean.

COMED_Q

Comed Q 2019 was the first in history , a

national level community medicine quiz

conducted in Tamil Nadu. It had various

participants all over India. Our various minor

events such as WhatsApp Quiz, Insta Quiz, Model Presentation, poster presentation,

photography contest, Art and Short Film contest helped us to popularize the name

to large number of people. It was conducted in 3 days. First 2 days was being organized

more to help the pre-final year students to appear in their university exams, and

mainly PG aspirants to finish their preperation in just 2 days time . It was atmost

successful just because of our hounarable Head of Department Professor

Dr. P. Seenivasan sir, our loveable associate and assistant professors and our friendly

post-graduates. The last day was quiz program with almost 129 teams from more than

50 colleges all over India. We are happy to say that this tremmendous event has made a

print in the year 2019, just because of only one batch, a family.

The Told Tale...

Shard

She always sat with her feet tucked under my

thighs. “They’re freezing”, she’d say, “and

you’re so warm.” It’s the same when she

sleeps, arms and feet tangled with mine, her

forehead against my chest. My baby always

felt so cold, always stealing my sweaters and

more than her share of the blanket. I woke up

everyday to the sight of her clutching a teacup

for warmth, huddled on the couch with a book

on her lap.

Feline, that’s the word. That’s what I feel

when I think of her. Cat-like in the way she

stretches after a nap, the way she purrs softly

in her sleep, the slow, lazy way her eyes

blink… I could talk about her forever, though

our moments

together were a lot fewer than I wanted. Maybe

that’s why they stand out clearly in memory.

We lived together in the few moments she

snatched away from her work. A doctor’s

curse, she used to say with a half-apologetic

smile. Her days smelled of disinfectant and

body fluids, her nights fueled by caffeine. At

the end of it all, she would come back to me,

wrap myself around her and talk of life and

tears and death and birth. She’d break down

sometimes and I would hold her close. My angel,

tired and weary.

Sometimes I think she felt cold all the time

because she gave away her warmth to others.

Soothing aches and binding wounds…

She deserved a lot more than what fate gave

her.

Her colleagues told me her skull was bashed

in. They said she was trying to reason with the

mob, that the person they brought in was way

past the point of revival, that she did all she

could… and the first blow hit her. By the time

the guards pulled twenty people off her, my

baby was a broken rag doll staining the hospital

floor with one last offering, her own blood.

I will never hear her hum in the kitchen again.

I will never get to grab her feet and tickle under

them till her eyes water with laughter. We

will never again argue over who left the lights

on or whose turn it is to take out the trash. I

will never surprise her with breakfast in bed.

My darling, who always felt so cold without

me around her, now lies in a cold dark room on

a steel table, all alone.

River

There is Bhagirathi glacier in Himalayas.

Summer was about to come, and the glacier is

about to melt and flow as Ganga, but one frozen

drop in the glacier was unhappy about the

summer. It lamented about flowing without

any self control and disliked the idea of mixing

in ocean and becoming salty and of the uncertainty

out there.

Deodar which stood nearby said to the drop”

You should be happy for having a chance to

see the world. I’m here rooted to the same frozen

rock for years together.”

Having no other option, the drop reluctantly

prepared its mind to melt and flow.

Summer arrived. Bhagirathi melted and no

more as Bhagirathi, now flowed as Ganga ......

the frozen drop is now a water drop.

When it crossed Varanasi, the drop felt proud

for being worshipped ... “Ganga mayya Ganga

mayya”. When it crossed farmlands, it felt

happy on seeing farmers rejoicing the flow of

Ganga. After its course, finally it reached delta

and drained into the Bay of Bengal. No longer

worried, it felt satisfied for being worshipped

and being useful.

On one fine sunny day the drop evaporated

into the sky with few more friends!!! There,

they formed clouds. The cloud moved towards

Indian ocean. On a precipitatory condition,

the cloud rained on Indian ocean. Our hero

drops, by luck and destiny, fell on an open

pearl oyster and the oyster closed and over a

period, our drop, no more a water entity became

a pearl.

Then one fine day, a pearl hunter from Madurai

dived into sea and collected pearls, including

our hero. He gave them to the royal jewel

maker. He made a pearl necklace and gave to

Queen of Madurai, Koperundevi of Pandya

Dynasty. She wore it happily around her neck.

Our hero from himalayas got a royal place in

Queen’s neck.

Similarly, we, humans, hesitate to face the

world at times. We should face this world, live

useful to others and respectable. Then the life

turns us precious, like a pearl and keep us in a

place where we would be revered just like our

hero!!!

LIFE OF A MORTICIAN

Death is inevitable. We don’t come across

deaths everyday in our day to day lives ,but

have you ever thought of people who work

on dead people? ...... yeah we are talking

about the “Mortuary workers” .We don’t

talk much about them, they are the least

studied crowd of people.

We thought about interviewing them to

know their views and lifestyles. So we visited

the mortuary at Government Stanley

hospital, Royapuram. The interview was

taken by Lokesh and Vijaypraveen , Second

year medical students.

Saravanan, aged 47 from Vyasarpadi, is a

mortuary worker with an experience of 5

years in SMC .Before this he worked in FOD.

What is your qualification and

salary?

I studied till eighth standard and I earn

26,000 per month.

Do you like your job ?

Yes I do like this job, “Manasara velai

seiren”.Initially it was a bit awkward but

now I have got adapted to this job. This job

has taught me a lot about life, relationships

and their value in our lives.

How many bodies do you deal

with each day?

Every day there are many cases and each

one of us is assigned with five bodies a day

approximately.

How many hours do you work?

12 hours a day. We have both morning and

nightshifts. We get holiday on sundays. I

had nightshifts for four years.

Difficulties you face in your job?

Firstly getting used to see dead bodies was

difficult.“Poga poga Apadiye pazhagidichu.

Ana, ipo kuda sila cases pakumbothu

manasuku kastama irukkum”. Initially I

used to feel nauseous and giddy due to the

smell in the mortuary . But now I have got

acclimatized to it .

Any health issues due to this

job?

No, because we follow sterile processes and

take precautions. We handle the bodies

carefully. So I haven’t got any health issues.

How do you manage the stress

from this job?

Initially getting exposed to dead bodies

wasn’t easy for me. It was difficult, but at

the end of the day on going home I forget

everything . “Kulanthinga mugatha pakumbothu

kastam ellam maranthiduvom”.

What cases are the most heart

wrenching?

Chinna kulanthainga la post mortem pannum

bodhu manasuku romba kastama

irukkum.

Do you get unidentified bodies?

Yeah we do get unidentified bodies . We get

about 15 unidentified bodies per month. We

wait for some days if no one comes to claim

it we give it for study purposes .

Have you ever thought of quitting

this job?

No, I have never thought of quitting. Instead

I feel good to work here.It isn’t a job to feel

ashamed about.

Have you faced any difficulties

because of this job?

So far I haven’t faced any difficulties due to

this job. People around me don’t underestimate

my job and give it the same importance

as theirs, so I don’t think I have faced

any difficulties due to this job .

What is the most common cases

you come across?

Suicide cases are the most common. In

that too, hanging cases are the most common.“Vazhkka

romba perusu, ana chinna

chinna vishayathukaga suicide varikkum

poga venamnu na nenaikuren”.

Do you have anything to say to

the society?

Do you have insomnia due to this

job?

Not now. Initially I wasn’t able to sleep.

“Family members aluratha partha manasu

ku kastama irunthichu.”

Have you experienced any supernatural

things?

No , I don’t have belief in such things, that

depends on our mindset .

THE FOOD FELLA

I think the route to anyone’s heart is through their stomach. Proof? You

calm your mom down, by saying “ Ma, I am hungry!”. First dates start with “

How about a coffee?” You pressure the government with hunger strikes, refusing

to touch even a drop of water.

While most eat to live, there are a special few who live to eat, and one of

them is Jayadev, the foodfella, from the 2015 batch.

Jayadev, at the age 12 realized that food was more than calories for him, it

was memories and much more. He started a flood blog to record some of the dishes

he recommends, as he rates and comments on the restaurants as a whole.

Do follow his blog at https://thefoodfella.wordpress.com/, or follow his instagram

Alamadi

Alamadi, the pride of Stanley,

was started in the year 1952, in

a small village in Thiruvallur

district. It had been helping a

lot of people in and around the

village by providing health care

facilities. But the services

were interrupted in 1980. It was

started again by our Stanley

students with the help of

Dr.P.Seenivasan sir in the year

2008. But due to the Varda

cyclone in 2016, the hospital

was damaged and the service was

stopped. Now the reopening

process is going on.

Gren

Hands

"Big things often have small beginnings".

From its humble inception, here at Stanley,

with the aim of nuturing a sapling daily

for atleast one hour, “Green Hands”

has flourished. Its achievement this year is

that it provided 150 plus saplings to

areas affected by the Gaja cyclone. This was done

inspite of the bad weather and water scarcity.

'Logo’ is an identity and yeah, they created it.

The logo for Green Hands and Alamadi was created

and relerased by our Dean.

Even a single tree gives us great comfort. So a new

initiative was started where a student plants a

sapling on his/her birthday in and around Stanley.

“From little seeds

Pathognosiz 3.0

Stanley thanks RESALDERZ’14 for sowing the seeds of PATHOGNOSIZ, a national level intercollegiate pathology

extravaganza which has now grown into a mighty tree owing to the commendable efforts by Atheetham’15 and

Thuritham’16.

Carrying forward the legacy has never been straightforward. Months of pre-planning, weeks of sheer

hard work, days and nights of overcoming the hardships has what made Pathognosiz 3.0, a possibility. Starting

from full fledged whatsapp quizzes to a very thought provoking eosin-hematoxylin art contest, this third edition

of Pathognosiz made sure every event makes a mark.

The d-day, September 21, 2019 is quite unimaginable without the tremendous amount of support

offered by all the faculty of Department of Pathology and our beloved juniors. Thuritham’16 is forever!

PURPOSE

Night falls after a tiring day.

Peaceful sleep an evasive dream.

Weary of my routine, in confinement

i dwell.

Labour for my monthly pay,

A life, same today as yesterday!

I have company, but everyone’s

secluded.

Every visage bears a story.

Every soul, a fight.

Unknown to the company,

We tread on as hopeful retards.

Big fish kill small fish.

And small fish, smaller

No conscience, no guilt

Just and goodness, long forgotten.

Surviving if so, like hay amongst

needles.

Yes this is war.

Every man for himself.

But no!

I need something.

A shoulder to rest upon,

A smile that resurrects,

A place to get back,

A soul to open up,

An eye that soothes,

A kiss that heals,

A warm embrace,

A genuine company,

A purpose,

To fight this otherwise

pointless battle.

INFINITY IS BLISS

She lets me taste the rainbow

Bathes me in starlight

Shuttles me across

To galaxies near and far

Love she makes

War she fakes

Rips my soul to a million pieces

Fills me with poems

Heals me with kisses

Strands of her hair

The scent of her smile

Warmth of her feet

The life in her hugs

What more would I want

But a beautiful infinity

SMILES AND WALLS

Smiles, courteous and affectionate.

Smiles, benevolent and soothing.

Smiles that turn to naughty grins.

Smiles that warm your morning.

In haste i catch my daily train,

To office and it’s unending chores.

With me i take my work and strain,

Indifferent to the mess it holds.

Immersed in my concerns i travel.

Surrounded by the mess, yet detached.

The cacophony of voices never reach

me,

For i choose not to listen.

A faint touch on my cheeks;

A warmth i never have felt for long.

Those little fingers caress my hair,

Pulling a strand, then and there.

The walls i built, now seem blurred.

I turn my head with glee and awe,

Only to see a lovely kid

Amused and lost amidst my curls.

And in his face, a smile!

Smiles, courteous and affectionate.

Smiles, benevolent and soothing.

Smiles that turn to naughty grins.

Smiles that warm your morning.

The Book Thief

Markus Zusak

There are many books based on

world war,Hitler,the Jews how

their lives changed and all but

“The Book Thief” is nothing like

that ,it is about a girl Liesel

Meminger one among the many

spectators of the war , whose small

world of peace was shattered by it

. Ten year

old Liesel comes to Nazi Germany

or to put it in the correct way is

brought there by her mother who finds herself

incapable of taking care of Liesel and her brother.

Tragedy starts in Liesel’s life with the death of her

brother on the way to Germany. She arrives on a poor

Street in Nazi Germany, Himmel Street to her foster

parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann.

From then onwards what unfolds is the journey of

a ten year old girl, her love for words and how she

creates a world of her own in that corner of Germany.

A world which consists of a Mama, her beloved Papa

and his accordion ,a best friend Rudy Steiner,a

Jewish fist fighter and of course a whole lot of words

and books. The books takes us through the life if

Liesel as she watches the war from the sidelines as

she watches the Jews being marched through the

streets, people whom she knew being sent off to fight

the war,a Jew in hiding, she watches as once again

her world is torn apart by

the war.

The entire story is narrated by a rather unusual

person, Death, who in spite of his busy schedule

manages to tell us the story of Liesel. The book is

strong yet subtle as it gives us a glimpse into life in

a corner of the world, it shows us how words hold

the power to change the world, to change lives. It

shows the anger, sadness ,fascination ,happiness and

moreover the strength of a girl in Himmel Street

The Sparrow

Mary Doria Russell

“We have proof that another

sentient species exists

nearby and they sing”

said Emilio. “They

sing, Anne”

Father Emilio Sandoz would’ve

strangled himself before he

uttered the aforementioned words

had he known their consequence.

In a dystopian 2019, a satellite dish picks up signals

from an alien species inhabiting a planet of the

Andromeda Galaxy. The signals when translated turn

out to be music, haunting yet spiritual. The person

who discovers this is James Quinn, a minor employee,

who shares this with his four friends; Father Sandoz,

a Jesuit priest and a successful linguist; Sofia

Mendez, a brilliant programmer; Anne and George

Edwards, a doctor and an engineer respectively.

The five friends with three Jesuit priests eventually

become part of the first mission to Rakhat, the

planet of the Singers. Only Sandoz returns to earth

alive, decades later and as a man-out-of-his-time, to

skepticism and some outspoken hostility from his

peers at the Jesuit mission.

The story writing oscillates from the mission to a

broken post-return Sandoz. He suffers from PTSD

and often looses his grasp over his faculties. We also

see parts of the histories of the protagonists. Sandoz

with his early years of drug abuse, Sofia who lost her

parents to the Kurdish war, even awkward Quinn, an

Irish giant who falls for the guarded Mendez.

There is no overall sentiment to this book. There

isn’t a moral here either. But there is a non-religious

element of spirituality. This is evident from the

echoes of the old testament in the interaction between

the expedition and the Va’rakhati, or the inhabitants

of Rakhat and also the recurrent phrase, Deus vult

meaning God’s will.

The Sparrow is not everyone’s cup of tea. This book

has no solid genre. Sometimes it may even come

across as too descriptive or too dry. One might even

feel that the author stretched some scenes and

shortened some others. But considering the time

period during which this book was penned and

the creative genius required to hatch this plot, a

conclusion is to be reached that The Sparrow is a bold

attempt and maybe a successful one too.

SHE !!!

she always sat with her feet tucked under my thighs.

“They’re freezing”, she’d say, “and you’re so warm.” It’s

the same when she sleeps, arms and feet tangled with

mine, her forehead against my chest. My baby always felt

so cold, always stealing my sweaters and more than her

share of the blanket. I woke up everyday to the sight of

her clutching a teacup for warmth, huddled on the couch

with a book on her lap.

Feline, that’s the word. That’s what I feel when I think of

her. Cat-like in the way she stretches after a nap, the way

she purrs softly in her sleep, the slow, lazy way her eyes

blink… I could talk about her forever, though our moments

together were a lot fewer than I wanted. Maybe that’s why

they stand out clearly in memory.

We lived together in the few moments she snatched away

from her work. A doctor’s curse, she used to say with a

half-apologetic smile. Her days smelled of disinfectant

and body fluids, her nights fueled by caffeine. At the end

of it all, she would come back to me, wrap myself around

her and talk.. of life and tears and death and birth. She’d

break down sometimes and I would hold her close. My

angel, tired and weary.

Sometimes I think she felt cold all the time because she

gave away her warmth to others. Soothing aches and

binding wounds…

She deserved a lot more than what fate gave her.

Her colleagues told me her skull was bashed in. They said

she was trying to reason with the mob, that the person

they brought in was way past the point of revival, that she

did all she could… and the first blow hit her. By the time

the guards pulled twenty people off of her, my baby was

a broken rag doll staining the hospital floor with one last

offering, her own blood.

I will never hear her hum in the kitchen again. I will never

get to grab her feet and tickle under them till her eyes

water with laughter. We will never again argue over who

left the lights on or whose turn it is to take out the trash. I

will never surprise her with breakfast in bed.

My darling, who always felt so cold without me around her,

now lies in a cold dark room on a steel table, all alone.

VISIONS...

I have a vision

Both of us together

Far off on a neglected coast

Thinking about a life so dreamy

Of a romance so steamy

With the waves washing our feet

With the birds chirping so sweet

Looking over the horizon

With a hope so deep

Conjuring up visions of happy endings

Only to realise it is not the end

That really matters

But the journey itself

That is a treasure in itself

With that new thought

My vision stretches

Into something more meaningful than ‘us’

Some say life has no meaning

Some say everything has a meaning

Now i wonder what does ‘I’ mean

So i wander in search of a means

Some say I is a noun

Some say I is lonely

Some say I is selfish

Some say I is God

Some say I holds the entire universe within itself

Now i realise what a conundrum I is

I is one and also many things

The dreamy coast long forgotten

With the idea of ‘I’

Boy, how i got smitten

A sound so far away

Tries to clear my visions away

I open my eyes to the dark of night

I look at a book opened the previous night

Reality settling, mind unsettling

I try to focus on a vision

That right now matters the most.

LAME THOUGHTS..

(I am........)

Tick tack goes the clock

Me lying sinking in bed;

Eerie buzz... of the machines by

Ruffle of the nurses’ gowns beside;

Hushed voices of magicians in white

Battling frantic to set me right.

Streaming air into my lungs

To keep up the heart’s throb,

Ere some unseen force could rob...

Hey! Get up! What’s happening here?

Ahem! All what I’m is a mere ear!

I now bet a race

In silence, solitude and grace.

(I was....)

Perky I was called

For I could never be stalled

‘Doctor at home’, I was described

For the handy remedies I prescribed

Not a herb in the garden left unused.

For decoctions prepared and diseases

Diffused

But I could never taste the ease,

For I was ever-chased by Mr. Wheeze.

I tackled all, armed with will;

THE PITEOUS

MEDICOs

They get tired

Yet they Relish!

They fail everytime &fed up

Yet they never Give up!

They lose every single enjoyment

Yet they carry on(:

They undergo sleepless gloomy nights):

Yet they bounce back and put a new heart

They get appreciations!!

Yet they still work to add up

Amidst of everyone's expectations

Only they should Impress):

Never they could Express

(I am......)

And here I am flocked by near and dear;

Who cry and lament in despair;

Oh no! this I can’t bear .......

“Wake up”, I order ..... to hug them..dear

Yet can’t help, my senses go dwindling-

My mind in a swirl goes plunging

I feel a funeral in my brain

Leaving alone my heart with pain!

As of now I bet a race

In silence, solitude and grace.

STANLEY DAY

The Stanley medical college was officially set

up on july2,1938. This day is the day STANLEY

shouts at the world and says,”my 81 years of

legacy with all its glory will be continued forever”.

The STANLEANS have their fortress in the

heart of Chennai which is affiliated under ‘The

Tamil nadu Dr.MGR Medical University’. Our

hospital is one of the oldest centres in India

in the field of medical education for which the

seeds are down as early as 1740 when the

East India company first created the medical

department. Stanley, actually it is the second

home for all STANLEANS. These 51/2 years

between the orientation day and the convocation

day changes every STANLEANS a lot .These

buildings aren’t made by bricks and cement but

by spirits and emotions. The change from SIR to

ANNA is the result of heartthrobing love where

we get into a blood relation. Looking at the

bond, the seniors flashing on the juniors,

i wonder having it pleasurably at STANLEY.

The greatest grandeur event EUPHORIA

never failed to electrify us with fun and joy. The

finest STANLEA is that work on the ground

to content your heart and soul. We go a long

way carrying the chariot of minor and major

events of Stanley. From anat,physio,biochem

to surgery,medicine,paeds,OG....Every subject

loads us with knowledge for us to lead a happy

life. Besides redblock,newblock,H block,I

block,ground,mess and gallery taught us

how to lead this life happily. Deeply plunged

into the soul is the Stanley spirit. The spirit

and emotion in every stanlean is impossible

to put off in any situation. In first year the

freshers will take any chance for escaping

from the hostel, but as days pass they stay in

STANLEY even in vacation... The STANLEY

mottobrotherhood,teamwork,tolerance

symbolise stanleans forever. We ,

STANLEANS always have something nonparallel

with others, expressing the kindness,

friendship,love,care,generosity,pleasure,joy and

the description goes limitless there.
