Hello Readers...

We hope you are all staying safe, well and hopeful during

these challenging times.

Awe-Inspiring Locals

While we've been busy developing our plans, we've listened

to some amazing positive, local stories. Charities joining

forces, volunteers giving more than time and new businesses

starting life, with others in the pipeline. Ride High, Harry's

Rainbow and The Henry Allen Trust found a new way to

boost confidence and happiness in young people. Even the

most worried business owners are working hard to find new

ways to get customers across their doors.

One new business owner said to us, "We aren't sure if it is

good timing but we believe in what we are doing". So do we!

In this edition you'll find many of these businesses.

WE MUST SUPPORT LOCAL NOW MORE THAN EVER.

Christmas will be Different

The rule of 6 means you might not have hundreds of guests

around the table on the day. However, it means spending

more meaningful time with your guests when you are

together. There are lots of fantastic turkey recipes to try - yes,

don't think leftovers, think getting creative in the kitchen.

Suzanne's cooking video and Moorgate Farm's recipes will

give you with an idea for every occasion. Make sure you buy

local produce for an extra special Christmas.

Christmas Events with a Difference

Mixing face-to-face with lots of friends and colleagues is

not an option right now. People are incredibly imaginative

though! We've all heard about business, friend and family

video zoom meetings, even drinks and meals. Now we're

hearing parties and discos! Where there is desire, there is a

way!

The much-loved Hallowe'en trick and treat, November Guy

Fawkes and Christmas Light Switch-ons were, very sadly,

cancelled. However, every community is working hard to

make the festive season special for young people. The Stony

Lantern Procession and the Stony Community Advent Project

crews teamed-up – look out for the creative streets! We can

all enjoy Christmas, just slightly differently.

Finally

All we have left to say is - Happy Christmas, enjoy the festive

season, stay safe and keep all your business essentiallylocal.

Here's to a much better 2021 - Emma

Feature

Snip the Strap

The RSPCA is urging people to snip the straps

on single use face masks to prevent unnecessary

injury or death to pets and wildlife.

Disposable face masks are a new hazard to wildlife

and since the start of Covid-19 there are increasing

reports of animals becoming tangled in the ear straps.

While everyone is aware of the importance of wearing

face masks, thousands of single use ones are being

thrown away daily. This creates a great deal of waste

and causes a negative impact on the environment.

Where possible, please consider environmentally

friendly, reusable face masks to prevent incidents like

the gull who was found to have a facemask tightly

wrapped round his legs.

Despite the swelling to his legs, thankfully the bird

made a full recovery.

If you suspect your pet has eaten a disposable face

mask, please contact a vet for advice immediately.

Morning Humans...

It's Luna here, Nog’s partner in crime. I have some

breaking news... I've just been spayed! I know what

you're thinking, what a terrible shame not to have

Luna pups but who wants all that drama these

days? My human says I'm enough to handle, let

alone 10 of me!

I had a keyhole spay which is done through two

tiny incisions rather than opening me up properly

(phew!). That sounds nasty and this way I am back

wearing my “dog-kini” in no time. Honestly, this

keyhole business is so much better than normal

spays ... less traumatic and painful than traditional

ones with fewer complications. Apparently, vet

Anna could see all of

my abdominal organs

on a big screen, so cool!

Recovery time for me

was certainly minimal, I felt greatthe next day and was

back playing with my favourite pals in no time.

Anyway, I’d better go, Barli and Welly want to play ‘Up

and at ‘em’! If you want

to get booked in for

keyhole surgery or have

any questions, then get

your human to book an

appointment with one

of the vets or nurses and

they can give them more

information.

Talented Dancers

Present Pandora

14-17 January 2021

Venue Theatre, Milton

Keynes

Milton Keynes Dance Theatre is

busy rehearsing for their next full

length production - Pandora.

Last year’s production of Romeo

& Juliet at the Venue Theatre MK received rave reviews

by audiences. This production of the Ancient Greek

story of Pandora’s Box will continue to give young,

aspiring talent the opportunity to learn, dance and

perform. Along with a literal telling of the story, there is

an abstract telling of the sins released on earth.

In spite of the challenges of 2020, staff remain

committed and use full COVID secure measures for

rehearsals. This is an exciting example of how local arts

are fighting for their future.

Keep Believing - This is the Beginning of

Something Great

Christmas is nearly here and we're all waiting, in anticipation, to hear

how we'll be able to spend it. Whatever happens, it's time to take care

of your body and mind.

GET PHYSICAL

Fitness is vital for good physical and mental

health, particularly as winter sets in and

exercising outside is less attractive. Although

there is no evidence to show that anyone has

contracted COVID-19 in a gym, fewer people are

using them than ever. The owner or manager

can help you to overcome your fears and get

you exercising. Outcomes from most illnesses –

cancer, heart disease and mental health improve

the fitter you are.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF XMAS

Take action to prevent anxiety,

depression or loneliness this Christmas.

Lift your mood and anxiety with a

better diet, sleep, physical activity,

talking, and ask for help. Spend time

with others - consider volunteering

your time.

TOP TIP

It's not just about

staying in, it's about

going out safely

and sensibly.

FITNESS TO SURVIVE

Happy Bodies Gym has

full measures to protect

you and you can attend

individual classes as a nonmember.

If your motivation

is particularly low right now,

join and get added benefits

and a routine that will rid

you of excuses!

TAKE TIME OUT

Take a little time out from

work, your busy life and your

gorgeous children. Put your

phone away, turn off the TV

and other noises to simply read,

meditate or gaze through your

window. This will help you to

relax your mind.

CONCENTRATE ON

YOU

The annual office

Christmas party may

be cancelled but take

a moment for selfindulgence.

Pampering

yourself - a warm

bath, exercise, a facial,

massage, or lovely nails

– can lift your spirits

and help to reduce

your stresses. Although,

it's not just about the

perfect make-up or

hair, sometimes feeling

better about what’s on

your outside will help

you feel better inside.

BOLD AND GLITTERY

FESTIVE LOOKS

You can sparkle this

Christmas. 2020 sees the usual

classic festive makeup go

bold, metallic and glittery. Pink or rose gold adds sophistication

while emerald and champagne gold creates an iconic look. Or

keep it simple with gold glitter eyeliner.

Festive red lips go ombre with colour graduation giving the

illusion of fuller lips. As an alternative to the red tones, go for

browns and gold.

Support in the

Community

The Maya CARE Community Interest

Company (CIC) helps senior and

less-able members of the community

to improve independence and

happiness at home. A growing army

of volunteers deliver the service

without any charge.

Visits last for 90 minutes, and audio and

video calls are also available. Volunteers

provide companionship and help with

visits to the doctor or getting to the

airport, bus or railway station.

They may also play scrabble or other

games, scan documents, even set up

phones and gadgets. They don't offer

emergency help, nursing, cleaning or

gardening services. All the necessary

checks are made on volunteer’s

suitability before they can work.

To date, Abhay Joshi and Manjiri

Gokhale Joshi have self-funded this

amazing enterprise themselves. Their

idea began in India in 2009 and since

bringing it to the area, over 1500 senior

citizens have benefitted.

We are sure this service will be even

more essential this Christmas. If you

could volunteer, donate or know

someone who needs help, get in touch.

Something to Wine About

During the height of the lockdown, to June 2020,

there was a 27% reported increase in investment

scams. Innocent victims lost around £55m of their

savings to unscrupulous scammers. Lockdown acted

as extra incentive for these criminals as they could

target savers who were anxious about the virus and

the effect on the economy. They were more easily

convinced to invest in an opportunity to increase

their savings. From wine to Bitcoin, investors do not

receive their forecast returns and the scammers simply

disappear with the money.

In the lead up to Christmas we may see another spike

of this type of scam, especially if lockdown restrictions

are increased again. If you are offered a very lucrative

investment opportunity which seems more favourable

than your bank, seek advice before investing your hard

earned savings. Savings rates may be very low at the

moment at your bank.

People aged 55+ are often targeted, as the group who

may be looking to increase their pension pot. Experts

fear that, again, the vulnerable and the elderly will also

become victims. If you know someone who might be

caught out, warn them about these scams or suggest

a call blocker to prevent unsolicited phone calls.

If you think you have been caught out - report the

matter to Action Fraud online actionfraud.police.uk

or by phone on 0300 123 2040.

pastry around the edge of the pie dish and cut slits

in the top to release steam.

4. Place the pie onto a baking tray to prevent the

gravy from over flowing. Cook in the centre of the

oven until pastry is golden brown - approximately

45 minutes. Serve with your favourite veg.

Vulnerable Children Benefitted…

From the fantastic new programme at Ride High

During lock-down, vulnerable children benefitted

from the fantastic new 4-week programme at Ride

High. Harry’s Rainbow and The Henry Allen Trust

children gave great reviews about their experiences.

Ride High use horses to improve children’s confidence,

happiness and wellbeing. Children enjoy two visits

with the horses and also receive weekly ‘Ride High

by Post’ activity packs and online support. Ride High

invited Harry’s Rainbow and The Henry Allen Trust take

part.

Odette Mould, Harry’s Rainbow Founder and CEO,

said, “The pandemic was difficult for everyone,

especially for those families who registered during

it. This project is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a

special experience.”

Dawn Allen, The Henry Allen Trust Founder and CEO,

said, “The Ride High course brings ‘Henry’s Happiness’

to our families.

It leaves lasting

memories away

from appointments,

schedules, hospital,

machines and

treatment.”

Light-up Your Street!

The theme for this year’s ‘Stony Stratford Lockdown

Lantern Project’ is Christmas at Home.

Covid-19 restrictions mean there will be no Switch-on Day

this year. Happily, the lantern team and Stony Community

Advent Calendar Project have joined forces and there is now

a special artistic opportunity for your own home.

Lantern kits went on-line to be sold from mid-October. This

gives you the opportunity to create a lantern or decorate

your front window – even both! A number representing

each day of Advent is allocated to every street in Stony

Stratford, Galley Hill and Fullers Slade. Make sure all your

lanterns and window displays are lit up from 1st December.

Everyone can enjoy them throughout the festive month.

Purchases of kits can be collected from York House on 14

-15 November.

If you live outside Stony Stratford, you can still join in– let

the team know which street you live in and they’ll include

the creations in the video of all the windows that light-up

on 1 December.

ENTER THIS EDITION’S COMPETITION

FOR A CHANCE TO WIN A TURKEY

FROM MOORGATE FARM

There are few better ways to enjoy a seasonal lunch

than with a Moorgate Farm Christmas Turkey. Susan

Gorst and her son use traditional farming methods

to raise the happy, free-range delicious KellyBronze

turkeys who begin life on the farm at just one day

old.

After arriving at one day old, they are kept warm in a

brooder for the next twenty-eight days. Susan then

becomes Mother Goose until the turkeys reach maturity.

Throughout the day, every day this mother and son team

inspect all elements of their care. That includes keeping the

feeding and drinking containers clean and full. They play

music, sit and hold the birds and even talk to them to keep

them calm and settled.

Gradually, as the birds begin to grow they reduce the

brooder temperature. At 5 weeks old the birds move into

the free-range pasture and a small, wooded area, where

they roam freely. The pecking order within the group begins

to form.

These birds get the best experience possible throughout

their journey. Most importantly, they are hand-pluckedto

reduce the risk of contamination and give the birds a

Cloudy2Clear, A Local

Service With A Smile.

I think we can all agree that the sooner

we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful

corona virus the better. That said, there

are also some heart warming positives

that we can take out of this situation.

It has often been said that we can only

really get to know one another and realise

what is truly important in times of crisis.

I think few would argue that in this case

what has proven to be important is local

community spirit.

All C2C

employees

operate a

strict social

distancing

policy.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear

windows Stephen Moon it became clear that

these values have been held dear for a number

of years. Since starting the business some years

ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their

core values of supporting the local community

by providing a service that saves the public

money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the

glass to be replaced and not the whole window

once the unit has failed. Stephen commented

“Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our

community through the last financial crisis in

2008 due to the savings that can be made in

using our service. Unfortunately we might be

going through something similar again soon

and the public can rest assured that we will be

there to help again”.

Stony Stratford

In Bloom

The York House Vegetable Project grew

an incredible crop of fruit and vegetables

for the Wolverton

Foodbank. The Indian

summer ripened

tomatoes, pepper

and cucumbers

beautifully in the

poly tunnel. Potatoes,

beans and squash

grew in abundance

while the apple trees

were weighted down

with apples. Winter

crops are now in

the pipeline, as SSIB want to help those in

difficulty, due to the pandemic, with fresh

food.

Around town, work parties in groups of

6 deadheaded, watered and kept the

perennial beds looking beautiful into

autumn. They also awarded ‘Cheering the

Town with Flowers’ certificates to homes

to acknowledge the wonderful efforts in

making house fronts look beautiful. In mid-

October winter plants were placed in the

planters to bring more cheer to the town

into the cooler months.

SSIB planted a number of heritage fruit trees

(some sponsored by local residents) at the

North end at the back of Queen Eleanor

Garden. A board will be placed to give

information about the trees.

An Illustration of a

Positive Lockdown

After her ‘A’ Levels were cancelled, Megan Smart invited

art commissions through Facebook. The response was

overwhelming and excitingly it led to a commission to

illustrate Hayley E. Mason’s first children’s book ‘Fenton’s

Adventures’.

A virtual writing and illustrating partnership was born

and ‘Fenton’s Adventures’ went on sale in September –

hopefully, the first of many. The book features Hayley’s

lovable cockerpoo Fenton, who learns how to stay safe

while on his adventures.

Hayley brings her knowledge of health and safety,

equality and diversity and well-being from her work

as a legal trainer to the book. Megan inspired by the

experience has begun her own journey, starting with

the HNC in Art and Business Practice at Milton Keynes

College. Wishing both Megan and Hayley, the best of

luck.

Wolverton and

Greenleys in Bloom

The Wolverton and Greenleys parish colour

scheme and flowers looked incredible

this summer, helped by extra furloughed

volunteers. Window box, tub and front

garden displays were beautiful. However,

householders must remember to cut back

greenery that pushes onto the pavements.

It causes safety issues for pedestrians,

particular those less mobile, young and

older. Strong roots also cause damage to

walls.

Feel free to deadhead any rogue geranium

that needs deadheading, it will help to

produce new flowers. The gorgeous purple,

yellow and white pansies are now in place

to brighten this winter.

The Woodland Trust donated two hundred

trees and the council would love your help

to plant or recommend places they could

go. The trees start as small two-foot sprigs

and need lots of TLC and protection to

flourish as well as space to grow. A true gift

Put Your Distractions Away

On 10 August 2016, Adam Pearson discovered how

lethal the combination of a mobile phone and a

moving vehicle can be, when

alorry driver ploughed into his

stationary car on the A34. The

driver was changing music on

his mobile phone.

Just 8 seconds of distraction,

along22 metres of road, travelling

at51mph resulted in the death of

amother, her two sons and her

step-daughter. A father and son

wereforced to watch helplessly from another vehicle.

Adam su ering multiple injuries - ruptured aorta, 5 thoracic

spinal fractures, 19 broken ribs, a collapsed lung, multiple

lacerations as well as internal and external bleeding.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance ensured his

survival - an aortic rupture normally has a 90% mortality

rate.

The lorry driver was sentenced

to 10 years for 4 counts of

causing death by dangerous

driving. He’ll serve half of that

time. Even though it was made

illegal to use a hand-held mobile

phone or other device while

driving in 2003, many fatal

accidents have happened since.

AGAINST

THE LAW

Using your phone while

driving for calls, texts,

photos, social

media etc

Between 2013 and 2019 mobile phone use, while driving,

accounted for nearly 800 deaths or very serious injuries.

Last year alone, nearly 3000 accidents were caused by

distractions, including mobiles, within the vehicle.

Fines and penalty points are getting tougher but this will

not bring back a sibling, parent or friend. Keep everyone

safe and put your phone away.

Winter Car

Check-list

Cars are twice as likely to break down in

the winter, so be prepared with checks:

Washer Fluid levels – use screen wash to

prevent jets freezing.

Exterior lights – are they working and

clean?

Tyres – check for wear and correct

pressure.

Batteries – don’t like cold and damp

weather, get it checked.

Antifreeze – top up to prevent the engine

from freezing.

Phone – keep it charged and away. Before

going on a long journey:

First Aid Kit – keep it up-to-date.

Road Atlas – a back-up if your Sat Nav fails.

Ice-scraper – clear windscreens before

driving to stay legal!

Reflective warning triangle - warns

others of a problem.

High Vis jacket - keeps you visible to other

road users.

Before going on a long journey: Fill the

fuel tank, check the oil and coolant levels,

tyre pressure and lights. Pack a torch,

blanket, warm clothes and sturdy shoes

just in case. Stand away from your car if you

break-down.
