It’s nearly time for one of our very favourite
days of the year … Sunflower Day. If you
haven’t already, then make sure you get yourself
a beautiful Sunflower Fund tope and why not
consider becoming a bone marrow donor? It’s not
as painful think and it’s really the ultimate gift you
can give another person! According to the Global
Cancer Observatory, a South African is diagnosed
with a blood disorder every five minutes, and
there are only under 77 000 registered donors
in the country. This year, Sunflower Day will be
celebrated on 13 November and you can take
part by either becoming a donor or buying a Tube
of Hope (TOPE) and sharing some hope. TOPES
are available online or at Pick n Pay stores and
selected pharmacies nationwide for R30. You could
also consider planning a mini-event or fundraiser
to commemorate Sunflower Day and help with
much-needed fundraising efforts to grow the
patient support fund. Details: www.sunflowerfund.
We are absolutely delighted by the news
that the incredibly popular SA musician
Jeremy Loops will be performing live at the
Chris Saunders Park in Umhlanga on Sunday 22
November! Yay for live music concerts being a
thing again! Loops will be supported by local
artists and there will be a variety of food stands as
well as a fully stocked bar available. The organisers
have assured us that all Covid-19 protocols will be
in place to make the event a safe environment and
there will be plenty of space for social distancing
and sanitizing stations available. Face masks are
required. No food or beverages will be allowed
into the venue. Tickets are limited to 500 people
and are between R180 and R200 per person. Gates
open at 12. Details: www.webtickets.co.za
The Philocaly Trail (Philocaly meaning the Love of Beauty)
is a KZN beach walk that was initiated by nature lover Nikki
Williamson, which sees participants donating money to
marine conservation charities for each day that they walk.
The event first took place last year, with 285 participants,
and over R60 000 was raised and donated to WildOceans
Conservation, Breathe Ocean Conservation and KZN Beach
Clean UP. When 420 walkers took the beach (walking between
Mtunzini and Sheffield Beach over five days) in September
this year, a remarkable R100 000 was raised. Due to popular
demand, a ‘mini’ Philocaly Trail has been organised on 14 and
15 November. Participants can walk on one or both days and
the event goes from Tinley Manor Beach to Salmon Bay Beach
(15km on day 1) and then Salmon Bay to Umdloti (17km on
day 2). Details: FB: https://www.facebook.com/PhilocalyTrail or
