2011 Annual Report of
Sofia University and University of Mining and Geology SEG Student Chapter
1. Regular meetings
Student Chapter meetings have been held regularly on monthly basis in need of discussion on
various topics regarding the student organization activities.
2. Field trips
In June, 2011 Sofia SEG Student Chapter and Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary Chapter
took part in a joint field trip to Assarel Cu-porphyry deposit in Panagyurishte ore district. The field trip
was led by Assoc. Prof. K. Bogdanov from Sofia University.
The Assarel Cu porphyry deposit is partly hosted by massive and brecciated andesitic rocks,
which are coeval with the main granodiorite porphyry intrusion. The principal ore assemblage is
quartz-chalcopyrite ±pyrite accompanied by phyllic and propylitic alterations, with quartz-pyrite with
lesser chalcopyrite in both the centre and marginal parts of the system. We have also been introduced
with the highly automated workflow in the Assarel-Medet JSC Mining and Processing Complex from
the mining operations to the production of copper plates through hydrolysis.
The company is the largest Cu producer in Bulgarian mining industry and it processes about 13 Mt of
copper ore per year and supplied the industry with about 200 000 tons of Cu concentrate per year with
25% copper grade.
Members of Sofia University and Eotvos Lorand University SEG Chapter at Assarel open pit
In the afternoon we visited the Medet Cu-porphyry deposit, which is emplaced in quartz
monzodiorite to granodiorite porphyry intrusion. We observed and sampled the main K feldspar-biotitequartz
and propylitic alteration assemblages and the associated quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite and quartzmolybdenite
mineralisation.
In September, 2011 we organized a field-trip to Elatsite Cu-porphyry deposit and Chelopech
Cu-Au epithermal deposit. The field trip was led by Assoc. Prof. K. Bogdanov.

Elatsite is the largest open-pit Cu-porphyry mine in Bulgaria and the largest operating
porphyry-copper deposit in Eastern Europe and also one of the richest in PGE (Pd).The Cu-Au-PGE
mineralization occupies a SW-NE elongated ellipsoidal shaped area of 800 x 650 m which plunges
south, hosted in Late Cretaceous subvolcanic quartz-monzonitic to granodioritic intrusions (U/Pb age
91.5-92Ma), but also well developed in Paleozoic granodiorites (U/Pb age 314 Ma) and partly in
Paleozoic greenschists. K-silicate alteration is developed in the form of K-feldspar, biotite and quartz
replacing original silicates. The total mined rock material extracted in 2010 was 44 Mt, and the 13 Mt
processed ore, produced 178 000 tons of Cu concentrate.
Sofia SEG Student Chapter members at Elatsite Cu-porphyry deposit.
After overview of the geology and ore mineralogy of Elatsite Cu-porphyry deposit presented by the
geological staff we went on a tour in the open pit. We sampled different type of ores and were
introduced to the field recognition of ”A”, “B” and “D” vein types.
Dr. K. Bogdanov explaining the vein types at Elatsite Cu-porphyry deposit.
In the afternoon we crossed the Balkan ridge and reach the Chelopech mine, owned by Dundee
Precious (Chelopech) BV, subsidiary of Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (“DPM”), a public company
registered in Toronto, Canada.
Chelopech HS epithermal deposit is an operating underground Au-Cu mine with measured
and indicated resources of 28.5 Mt ore at 4.1 g/t Au and 1.4%Cu, producing about 65 500 ounces of
gold and 27 480 000 pounds of copper per annum. During our visit the chief geologist Plamen
Doychev and the mine geological staff acquainted us with rock and ore types and demonstrated the
process of drill core logging and sampling techniques. Then we were introduced to the Gemcom 3D
modeling software and the mine database. We were happy to collect typical HS ”vuggy silica” and
enargite rich ore samples.

3. Future plans:
To invite the SEG Thayer Lindsley Visiting Lecturer (Glenton Masterman) and/or the SEG
Regional Vice President Lecturer (Chusi Li).
To organize field trip to Greece in Kassandra mine area (Skouries Cu-Au porphyry deposit,
Stratoni and Olympias Pb-Zn-Ag deposits).
To organize workshop or short curse for geologists, geology students and mining companies
in order to present the new achievements in exploration and economic geology of Bulgaria.
