President’s Report
2020 - The Year in Review
Submitted by Mary Bondmass, Ph.D., RN, CNE
The year 2020 will be remembered by most as the year of COVID-19, and what a
year it has been! As with many of you and other nursing organizations, the Nevada
Nurses Association (NNA) has been affected by COVID-19.
The mission of the NNA is to promote professional nursing practice through
continuing education, community service, nursing leadership, and legislative activities to
advocate for improved health and high-quality health care for citizens of Nevada.
Despite the dramatic effect of COVID-19 on us all, the NNA continues to improvise
and innovate to achieve its mission. Below is a brief recap of the NNA’s activities and
accomplishments related to our mission during 2020.
Mary Bondmass
Continuing Education
The NNA is committed to lifelong learning for nurses and offers many free and discounted continuing
education (CE) opportunities for NNA members. Non-members may be asked to pay a small fee. Joining our
learning center is free and provides access to online learning and other resources. During 2020, NNA has
increased its free CE offerings. This increase is partly due to NNA’s support of our parent organization, the
American Nurses Association’s (ANA), Health Nurse, Healthy Nation (HNHN) movement. The NNA has had
several HNHN lunchtime webinars, which have been recorded, and CEs offered at no cost to all Nevada (NV)
nurses. Additionally, the NNA has been collaborating with some of NV's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
students to offer presentations of their evidence-translation DNP projects via the NNA website, offering CEs
at no charge to NV nurses.
More educational activities are in the NNA's CE development plans, some of which will collaborate with many
other nursing organizations within NV.
Community Service
Multiple community service opportunities were, and still are, driven by the COVID-19 crisis. Early during
the crisis, NNA established a retired and non-clinical nurse database to volunteer time in their respective
communities. Over 400 nurses signed-up, and several exchanges of contact information were made via the
NNA with volunteers and organizations needing help.
The NNA salutes the Philippine Nurses Association of Nevada (PNANV). Also related to COVID-19
community service efforts, the NNA contributed $1000.00 to PNANV to support their innovative project
called “Masks On, Shields Up! Protecting Nevada Together." This project aims "to provide masks and face shields
to front-liners, healthcare workers and the community…for protection during the pandemic." Members of the
PNANV made much personal protective equipment (PPE) themselves that they donated where needed, truly
a labor of love. One example of how the PNANV used the NNA's funds was to present 500 face shields to
University Medical Center, where a significant shortage was noted during the COVID-19 surge.
Nevada Nurses Association
9

The NNA plans additional PPE donations, specifically of face-shields and face masks, to especially hard-hit
areas across the state.
During 2020, the NNA also contributed to the community with increased scholarship dollars and other
donations to the Nevada Nurses Foundation (NNF). The NNF is an autonomous arm of the NNA and the
mission of the NNF is to increase access to quality health care for NV citizens by promoting the professional
development of nurses through recognition, grants, and scholarships. The NNA's contributions to NNF adds
to the continued professional progression of the nursing workforce in NV.
Nursing Leadership
Consistent with our mission to promote nursing leadership in NV, the NNA initiated a mentorship program
in collaboration with the Nevada Nursing Student Association (NVNSA) in late 2019, but it has flourished in
2020. The NNA has a liaison to the NVNSA, who attends all Board meetings in an advisory role. Conversely,
the NVNSA Board members rotate attendance at the NNA's Board meetings. Through this collaboration,
nursing leadership is modeled and hopefully will result in future NV nurse leaders' succession for the NNA
and other nursing organizations in NV. The program's success was evidenced by a past mentee being appointed
to an NNA Board position, to replace a departing member, shortly after her official entry into the profession.
Legislative Activities
In addition to having an active legislative committee during 2020 (their report is elsewhere in this yearbook),
the NNA served as facilitators and discussion leaders on two statewide conference calls with NV elected
officials including, US Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and US Congresswomen Susie Lee. These successful
conference calls provided NV nurses direct access to their elected representatives to express their concerns,
mostly related to COVIS-19 an other safety issues.
During 2020, the NNA has provided educational webinars in collaboration with the NV State Board of
Nursing, and the NV Hospital Association focused on the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which would give
a multistate license allowing NV nurses to practice with patients across state lines. Education related to the
pros and cons of the NLC is critical for NV nurses and citizens. Hopefully, this issue will be up for a vote at
the 2021 legislative session in Carson City.
As reported in the last RNFormation’s President’s Message, the NNA Board, for the organization, stand in
solidarity with the ANA’s policy resolution on racial justice for communities of color. The image below, posted
on the NNA's website, indicates our position.
Last But Not Least
NNA Membership has dramatically increased during 2020. Whether
this increase is because of, or despite COVID-19 is undetermined,
all Nevada nurses are welcomed and encouraged to join NNA to
promote Nevada nursing.
On behalf of the NNA Board of Directors and myself, I want to
extend a special thank- you to all NV nurses for their continued
professional efforts to provide quality health care to NV citizens in
whatever capacity they practice.
NNA Legislative Committee 2020
Submitted by: Amie Ruckman, MSN, RN
Co-chair, Legislative Committee
The novel coronavirus has changed the world. As the number of COVID-19 cases
accelerates in the United States, nurses on the front lines of the health care response
have found themselves in unprecedented positions, making high-stakes decisions for
patients, and their own personal lives. Nevada Nurses Association and the Nevada
Legislature recognize the invaluable role nurses fulfill every day and are committed to
ensuring that nurses have what they need at the bedside to provide their courageous
work.
The focus of the Nevada Legislature during the 2020 Interim Legislative sessions and
the upcoming 2021 Legislative session, has been and will continue to be on COVID-19
support for healthcare workers and on financial recovery of our economy. There is so
much work to be done. Our legislators need to know what your experience is at the
bedside is like while caring for patients, with equipment and supplies, and your staffing
Amie Ruckman, MSN,
RN – Northern Nevada
Legislative Co-Chair
concerns. We need the Legislature to focus on rebuilding our health care infrastructure by funding community-based
care so that Nevada can better manage and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and respond to any future national
health crises to ensure a stronger and brighter future.
We need nurses to engage in the legislative process to affect positive and lasting change in healthcare, at both the local
and the national levels. The Legislative Committee invites all NNA members to join us in the legislative process even if
you are not on the committee. We encourage you to contact your legislator(s) and provide them with your healthcare
expertise and nursing knowledge. Most legislators are part-time and do not have a healthcare background.
They really appreciate their nursing constituents acting as a resource on these healthcare bills. Please see the NNA
website for details on how to contact your legislator.
Some key points to know and understand about the NNA Legislative Committee and the Nevada Legislature:
• Nevada has biennial legislative sessions that last from February to June in odd years.
• NNA does not endorse candidates for office.
• NNA is a respected authority on legislative issues that affect nursing, our profession, public health, and patient care.
• NNA pays and utilizes a lobbyist firm, year-round, to guide us and provide direction and strategies for our legislative
efforts.
• The Legislative Committee meets monthly throughout the year and weekly when the legislature is in session from
January to June.
• The committee meets by teleconference at no additional cost to the members.
• Every other year, when the legislature is in session, the Nevada Nurses Association in conjunction with the legislature
hosts a day for the nurses to come to the capitol For many nurses and students this is a new experience: sitting
with their legislator during the session, attending a legislative committee hearing, seeing and hearing testimony and
presentations from our peers.
The Legislative Committee welcomes new members and fostering legislative advocacy in all nurses. You can make a
difference! Please contact us via the information on our NNA’s website.
Antimicrobial Stewardship / Infection Prevention
By Norman Wright, RN, BSN, MS
What happened to: We are all in this together?
My daughters just reached their fourth decade, my grandchildren are pre-teen, and
my view of what a Yearbook is may be different from yours.
Recognizing we have diverse perceptions of reality based on our age, sex, race
- and many other factors; – In the year since my "World Antibiotic Awareness
Week - Think Globally, Act Locally" article was published in the November 2019
RNformation life turned upside down.
"CDC Updates Antibiotic Resistance Threats Report" and "What was Your
Inspiration to Become a Nurse?" were published in February 2020, when
Coronavirus was silently seeping into the USA.
Norman Wright,
RN, BSN, MS
"Coronavirus, Ebola, Zica, Flu and PDRO," written in February and published May 2020, documented my
(our?) confusion about this "new COVID-19 novel virus" and the mixed messaging surrounding it. Competing
headlines, one that USA Today published on February 10th, "Trump says Coronavirus will be gone by April when the
weather gets warmer," was contrasted with a February 11th headline, "The coronavirus epidemic could grip about
two-thirds of the world's population if the deadly bug is not controlled."
"Coronavirus and PDRO - Fake, Faux and Phony News – A Plea for Unity," written on Memorial Day,
recognized we are at war with microbes, that COVID was politicized, and it pleaded for unity. The Nursing
Process was reviewed to help make sense of the constant barrage of information and misinformation.
In early April, The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) projected 60,000 deaths would occur
in the USA by August 4th. On April 27th, the estimate was increased to 74,000, and by Memorial Day, IHME's
number increased to 135,000 deaths.
Unfortunately, IHME underestimated, and on August 4th, the actual number of deaths was 155,478. To make
matters worse, IHME extended the timeline from August 4th to December 1st and increased projected deaths
to 310,000. Why? Because mitigation guidelines were being ignored. The pandemic that was originally projected
to be under control by August 4th was raging out of control. Cases, and deaths, were surging throughout
Southern and Western states, including Nevada.
14
www.nvnurses.org

On September 13, 2020, President Trump campaigned in Nevada and held "super spreader" events in airport
hangers and casino ballrooms. This occurred when the actual number of deaths in the USA was over 195,000,
and IHME estimates that over 415,000 Americans will die by January 1, 2021.
In Trump's own words, we heard him say that, on February 7th, he knew Coronavirus was airborne, was five
times more deadly than influenza, that it represented a major health threat to Americans, and was "deadly
stuff." Yet he chose then, as he does now, to downplay the seriousness of SARS-CoV-2 because he did / does
not want to "panic" us. The Nursing Process requires accurate data to make an appropriate treatment plan,
and we were denied it.
Health care is not an exact science. There is, and should be, debate about different treatment options. But
making erroneous claims about magical cures and promoting false hope is malpractice. In early February,
President Trump had real information that was withheld from us. Instead, we received a daily dose of lies, false
and fake "facts," and we failed to take necessary preventative actions.
What happened to: We're all in this together? Unfortunately, a large percentage of our population
believes that COVID-19 is a hoax, go to super spreader events, and refuse to wear a mask claiming it is their
"Constitutional Right" not to wear one.
We may have different perceptions of reality based on our age, sex, race, or any other demographic that can
be used to divide us, but we are in a war against microbes that cause death, and we must be given the truth,
not fantasy.
The virus does not care what political party you belong to. The unfortunate reality: We will never be in this
together until we get honesty and heal our divisions. If we don't, microbes will continue to kill us in ever
greater and greater numbers.
We will get through this
Dear Members,
To say 2020 was a year of extraordinary obstacles is an understatement. From the Covid-19 virus having
made its way to the US in February to the wildfires burning in the western states, and finally, we must include
the hurricanes making landfall in Louisiana and Florida as this publication goes to print. If we look back over
these six months, it is easy to feel heartache and pain. This must be especially heartbreaking to the healthcare
heroes who have served on the front line, either in their assigned duty or as volunteers.
We can choose to look beyond. We must choose to look beyond. Remember, good things happened in 2020.
Healthy babies were born, engagements, marriages, graduations, birthdays took place. We will be whole again.
Gratitude
You ask me to be thankful
Do I remember how?
You ask me to feel blessed
What does that feel like?
You ask me to find the good in things
What does that look like?
You ask me to be strong
Can I do that?
You ask me to be grateful for my family and friends
Ah, yes, that is a familiar feeling
You ask me to be grateful for each day the sun rises
I can do that!
You ask me to be grateful for this world, my world
And I am
With gratitude,
An endowment is a donation of $10,000 or property to the Nevada Nurses Foundation, which uses the
subsequent investment income for a scholarship, grant, or in ways proposed by the donor.
After being an annual Legacy Scholarship Sponsor for several years, Dr. John and Debra Scott established the
first NNF endowed nursing scholarship in 2017. An endowed scholarship is a gift that keeps on giving never
losing the integrity of the original gift! With a substantial contribution of $10,000 or more, the endowment
is awarded after reaching sufficient growth. Thank you for creating the Dr. John and Debra Scott Endowed
Nursing Scholarship fund and placing your trust in the Nevada Nurses Foundation!
The Erick Christopherson Legacy Scholarship Endowment is sponsored by Erick
Christopherson’s family and friends. Erick's classmates and faculty started this
endowed scholarship in his name. During their time together at Orvis School
of Nursing they recognized that Erick was kind, compassionate, intelligent,
and made people smile. Erick truly had a nurse's heart. We are saddened for
those who will never experience his care. Erick's sense of adventure led him to
travel the world. He loved the outdoors and was an excellent musician. Most
importantly Erick never judged others, he accepted.
This endowed scholarship honors our memories of Erick.
was created in 2019. She graduated from Carrington College with her nursing degree
and Orvis School of Nursing with her RN to BSN and Masters in Nursing in the Nurse
Practitioner track. Lauren was a certified emergency room nurse. This amazing young
woman was a strong advocate for advanced education in nursing and was an inspiration to
all her peers to pursue higher levels of nursing education. She accomplished much in such a
short amount of time. She always promoted excellence in nursing practice through being a
strong patient advocate, hard work, and education on all levels of nursing practice.
Rev. Dr. Denise Ogletree-McGuinn helped us honor departed nurses. Everyone celebrated their
years of service with a moment of silence.
“Nursing is a calling, a way of life and service profession that cannot be lived in isolation.
Nurses rely on each other for the synergistic effect of teamwork in our efforts of care giving.
It is appropriate that we honor our colleagues during their career and also at the end of life’s
journey” adapted from Jaeger, 2003.
2019 Grant Recipients
Since being given research grant monies in 2019, I have completed a pilot research
study, and await dissertation proposal defense. Last Spring, I was able to recruit a total
of 8 participants, of which two did not qualify after completing the screening process,
and one was unreachable after the initial consent and did not complete the aesthetic
component of the study. The five participants remaining completed the photographic
elicitation requirement and the interviews. They participated in member checking after
the transcription process was completed.
The monies provided me with software to complete the transcriptions and disposable
cameras for the participants with the ability to get them developed and stationary for the storyboard
development at the interview. I have four remaining from the initial purchase of ten. I will offer these to future
participants once the dissertation proposal has been successfully defended, and the University of Colorado
gives IRB approval. These participants will be included in the dissertation data collection; therefore, analysis of
the data was not performed at that time. The dissertation proposal will recommend up to 20 participants in
the final study.
There were lessons learned from this process. Instructions to use disposable cameras need greater clarity,
especially the use of the flash to improve the quality of the pictures obtained. The development of the film
was tediously slow and often took up to three weeks to complete. This time lag delayed the scheduling of the
interview, and hence the momentum for the reflection was lost. The cost of film development was more than
anticipated. For a camera with the potential to capture 27 exposures, I rarely had participants taking more
than ten images. I believe that this was an excellent learning opportunity, and I still believe in offering this
option to future participants. However, electronic images using personal electronic devices are more effective
at capturing images. It can improve the comfort level by taking pictures, using past photos, and reducing the
time lag between the reflections and the interview.
The transcription software permits new researchers to learn how to capture the audio recordings and
provides a base from which to check for accuracy. Unfortunately, the accent differences led to less accuracy
than anticipated and an inability to introduce punctuation or changes in the person speaking. The audiorecorder
allowed me to identify a starting point for conducting interviews and even the ability to capture from
a microphone on the computer for one meeting.
2020 Grant Recipients
LaTricia Perry, MSN, RN received her BS degree from Clarkson College, Omaha,
NE, in 1996. Upon completion of the degree, she and her husband moved to the
San Francisco Bay area where Ms. Perry was first licensed to practice as an RN. The
Perry's moved to Las Vegas, NV in early 2004 and embraced the notion of raising
their 3 children near a set of Grandparents in the area. During this time, Ms. Perry
continued to work as an RN in labor and delivery and school nursing. In 2010, Ms.
Perry completed a Master's degree in Nursing- Education and began a part-time
assignment at Nevada State College (NSC). Later in 2012, Ms. Perry transitioned to
a full-time lecturer position at NSC where she continues to work today. Over the
years at NSC, Ms. Perry has assumed the roles of Lecturer, Block Coordinator, BSN Director and currently
serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the School of Nursing. In 2016, Ms. Perry recognized her
passion for a better understanding of aging and the aging process and began a PhD program from Concordia
University - Chicago with a degree emphasis in Leadership and Gerontology. Today, as a PhD candidate, Ms.
Perry is in the dissertation phase of her program and is conducting a grounded theory study specifically
focused on better understanding the older adult's subjective aging experience and how that experience may
be influenced by biosocial interactions with health care providers. Ms. Perry's ultimate dream with this degree
is to marry her nursing knowledge and her role as an educator with gerontology in such a way to bridge
an inadvertent gap in geriatric and gerontological practices; ultimately creating ways to enhance the aging
experience for all.
Dr. Wei-Chen Tung, PhD, RN, FAAN, graduated with her BSN from National Defense
Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan and obtained her MSN and PhD from the College of
Nursing, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. Her passion for research has led
her to publish 59 articles with several articles pending publishing. As a Professor for
fourteen years, she has chaired or participated in more than 100 graduate student
committees. She has been an active advocate for Diversity and Inclusion, has taught
research, population health, community, and mental health courses, and chaired/
participated in multiple Department and University committees. Because the leading
cause of cancer among the Hispanic/Latina American woman is breast cancer and very
little research has been performed, Dr. Wei-Chen Tung and her team are exploring
the practices, information sources, and knowledge and factors associated with breast
cancer screening among this population. Dr. Tung’s research, Breast Cancer Screening
Among Hispanic/Latina American Women, will give new insight into how to address
the problem and help the women affected by breast cancer.
Katie Visman is a Nevada native who has been a registered nurse for twelve years. She has experience in
surgical orthopedics and inpatient psychiatric services. She currently works at Renown Children’s Hospital as
a maternal child nurse. Katie is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the University
of Nevada, Reno’s Orvis School of Nursing with a focus in family practice. For her DNP project Katie is
collaborating with The Eddy House to examine the knowledge, attitudes, and barriers homeless youth in
Norther Nevada have toward HPV and the HPV vaccine. To understand the homeless youth’s experience with
accessing HPV and the vaccine, youth who access services at The Eddy House are being asked to voluntarily
fill out surveys. Katie hopes that the data gained by analyzing these surveys will lead to interventions that will
increase vaccine uptake and HPV protection for this at-risk population.
