But wait, do you know all calories are not equal?

Yes, a calorie is not a calorie. Let’s understand the basic science of calories.

Glucose vs Fructose


Carbohydrates or Sugars are the main source of calories in our body. There are six types of

sugar-based on the chemical structure. Out of which three are monosaccharides, and three are

disaccharide. Glucose and fructose are two monosaccharides that are usually present naturally

in foods we eat. Both sugars contain the same amount of calories in one gram, but one is bad,

and one is good. Glucose is the good one that you need while fructose is the bad one you need

to avoid.

The reason behind this is the way our body metabolises both types of sugars. Glucose is

metabolised in your body by all body tissues, whereas fructose is metabolised only by the liver.

The body finds it easier to use glucose as an energy source than fructose. It is also worth

mentioning that our brain depends exclusively on glucose for energy. Thus, glucose can be

easily metabolised, but fructose is not so easy to metabolise in the body.

Also, studies suggest that consuming a lot of fructose leads to insulin resistance, abdominal fat

gain, increased triglycerides and blood sugar levels in the body as compared to the exact same


number of calories from glucose. Hence, fructose calories must be avoided when you are trying

to lose weight fast and naturally to aid the weight loss process.

Not only that, our body hormones have different responses to glucose and fructose. Ghrelin is a

hormone that causes hunger. This hormone tells your body that it is feeling hungry. When you

eat food, ghrelin levels in our body drops.

Studies show that fructose leads to higher ghrelin levels in the body than glucose. Not only that,

but fructose also doesn’t activate the satiety centre in our brain as glucose does, which means

reduced feeling of fullness. Satiety is the feeling of fullness when we eat something. What it

means is when you eat fructose, it will not make you feel full as glucose does, and also, fructose

eventually results in increased hunger.

So it seems like not all calories are equal.

Sucrose

Sucrose is another type of sugar which is a disaccharide. The table sugar we use contains

sucrose. Sucrose is a combination of glucose and fructose.

Hope now you understand why your health expert recommends avoiding sugar. However,

when you are on a weight loss journey to lose weight fast and naturally, any type of excess

calorie is not good for you. But when it comes to differentiating, glucose calories are definitely

better than other sugar calories.
