Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV
Jeff Sharkey, Terry O’Brien
You can all exhale (as I’ve been doing
for several days straight), the long
national nightmare is over. Young
Dracula has come and gone. It had a
beginning, a middle and an end and
nobody got hurt so... the metric by which I
measure the baseline success of a show. On
top of that, it was also a hell of a lot of fun. I
had forgotten how much I enjoyed prowling
the stage spouting stupid jokes, one-liners and
ad-libs (of which there were plenty, as, though
I remembered a shockingly high percentage of
my lines, there were a few, uh, gaps to be filled).
The run up to the show was fraught, with
weather delaying it by a day (sorry to the guests
who could not make the switch from Monday
to Tuesday, you missed a good time), no idea
what the stage was going to look like (Ryan
Long and his Riddlesbrood Touring Theater
Co. trucked down this mobile stage rig, which
was awesome, but we didn’t see it until day-of)
and my very deep concern that the show would
not go over very well (a concern that had me
flop-sweating when the first scene in the first
show went laugh-free despite several of my
brilliant jokes).
But those worries swiftly passed as the
day wore on. Despite some morning sprinkles
the weather held off and the grey, overcast
skies actually became part of the scenery, the
stage and set came together beautifully and
once everyone understood it was that kind of
show (think Blazing Saddles meets Airplane), the
laughs were loud and plentiful.
My castmates all settled in and, once we
got going, it was like falling off a bike. Amanda
Brough was Laurel to my Hardy as Mrs Leach,
the grumpy housekeeper in constant gastrointestinal
distress. Jeff Sharkey was suitably stupid
as Ben Fields (Renfield?). I wrote this part
for myself and originated it in 2017, but Jeff’s
inherent, natural stupidity lifted it to a whole
new level. (ZING!) Miranda DeLong brought
her millennial angst and cutie-patootiness to
the part of Carolina Franklin, her lovelorn character
getting some of the biggest laughs of the
night. Lisa Weck brought a vapid innocence to
the part of Isabella, Dracula’s daughter, which is
a real feat of acting as Lisa is neither vapid nor
innocent. And Kevin Ebner did some Capital
A ACTING! as Nevada Smith (totally not a
rip-off of Indiana Jones) and was something
of the company cheerleader; as Kevin goes,
we go. Also helpful was Taran Christen, who
played all of our sound cues at the right times
and, more importantly, fed the title character
the lines he could not remember.
Finally, there was me, the glue that held our
gears together, the sugar in our gas tank, the
iceberg right ahead. To call this show dumb is
an insult to the word dumb. Gloriously, delir-
iously stupid defines it better. So
dumb we enter this kind of tantric
zen where everything disappears
into a swirling vortex of stupid. It’s
really my crowning achievement.
Most importantly, both shows
were nearly sold out (65+ at the
4:30pm seating, 75+ at the 7pm)
meaning the 2021 West Cape May
Christmas parade will be getting
a decent chunk of change ($2720
to be precise), thanks to all of you
who attended.
Major, major props are due
to the kitchen and wait staff who
did remarkably well, with the first
show starting on time and the
late. Lily Collins as the title character
is very engaging and the
story, while a trifle, keeps moving.
It also confirms what I’ve long
suspected — French people are
snooty assholes.
Driving 45 minutes to the
nearest Chick-Fil-A with my kids
and ordering $70 worth of food
while getting nothing for myself
is the bravest thing I’ve ever done
as a parent.
My delivery route got off to a
flying start when my alarm went
off at 6am and I thought, “Why
is my alarm set for Wednesday
morning? Delivery is Thursday!”
second show starting 10 minutes So I went back to sleep. For
early. This is especially impressive three minutes. Then bolted up
considering it was EZ’s first foray in a panic. “OH MY GOD IT’S
into dinner theater.
THURSDAY!” I’d have bet you
So, one final giant THANK
$100 it was Wednesday. Again, the
YOU to everyone involved. It was a
life of a famous actor.
special night. And, as feared, Jack
“Waiting for You” by Gordon
Wright liked it so much he wants
Vincent should have been, at
minimum, on regular rotation at
to do it again. So we may try to get
WXPN. That that song was not
something together for Christmas,
a major hit in this singer-songwriter
era is a total mystery.
though spring is more likely. But…
we’ll see.
This week it was Gaiss’
Reality Check of the Week:
Market in Villas bailing me and
After those two stellar performances
as Young Dracula where
my failing bladder out of a jam.
I could just not drink any coffee
I had the world on a string, the
or soft drinks during my delivery
crowd in the palm of my hand, I
route, but that would remove all
had to drag my ass out of bed to go
the adventure! Also, Gaiss’ has the
wait tables Wednesday morning.
best cheesesteaks in the area and
Showbiz. It will humble you.
it’s not particularly close.
Tom Sims was 1-for-2 in his
Ruben Nunez, I want you to
Like a good courtroom drama? Who
doesn’t? Start with the fight for justice,
throw twists and turns, and add a surprise
witness. You have one person to
thank for the modern-day courtroom
drama — Perry Mason. Well, you can’t thank
Mason — because he’s fictional. He is one
of the most successful fictional trial lawyers
ever. In fact, he’s the undisputed leader.
Written by Eric Stanly Gardner, Perry
Mason first appeared in the 1930s editions
of Saturday Evening Post and Toronto Star
Weekly. The novels began in 1933 with two
published nearly each year for more than 30
years. My favorite titles in the series — The
Case of the Lucky Legs, The Case of the Caretaker’s
Cat and The Case of the Stuttering Bishop. Don’t
write’m like that anymore!
The three best-selling book series of all
time? First, Harry Potter, second, Goosebumps,
and third, Perry Mason. Nancy Drew, Twilight and
Lord of the Rings are further down that list.
I picked up the stories with reruns of
the TV series that ran before my time —
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
1957-1966. The legendary Raymond Burr
played Mason — and he captured the folklore
famously. He took on impossible cases with
even more impossible odds. He called in surprise
witnesses. He drew confessions from
wrongdoers right there on the stand! Sound
familiar, Law and Order fans? Thank Mason!
HBO released its first season of a reimagined
Perry Mason earlier this year. It was well
done! Set in the 1930s, it had a look and feel
that was unmistakably nostalgic for the era.
Robert Downey, Jr., producer, was going to
play the title character. Schedules conflicted,
so the story goes, and Matthew Rhys takes the
part. It’s just as well, after Downey’s Sherlock
Holmes could I have taken him seriously?
You may remember Rhys as the journalist
opposite Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Day in the
Neighborhood last year. He is exceptional as
Mason, who takes on tough cases, but only
one the whole season. He seems more desperate
in this series than he ever was in real life
— oh, I mean in the show from the 60s. We get
more backstory in 2020 than what I remember
from the Burr series.
Rhys’ Mason drops more F-bombs than
Burr or any other adaptation ever did! For me,
that was a little off putting at first. And the
story can drag a little — not enough to lose
me, just enough to notice. But the authenticity
of the sets, props, and fashion start to balance
that out. In the end, the acting, characters, and
courtroom drama is outstanding. I’d give a
second season a try. Mason still got it.
The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
We shall not talk of trick or treating
again. We are embarrassed
and contrite over the explosion
in the wee small hours that
scattered chunks of pumpkin
and at least two Wildwooders over a large
part of the city. It wouldn’t have happened
if our lanterns had been carved from the
traditional turnips rather than 3,000lbs of
mushy pumpkin: turnips are small, hard
and cheerless and the mere act of hewing the
inside out leaves a grown man weak.
Pumpkins, on the other hand, are soft as
an Englishman (as Ma used to say... hmm,
there’s a theme here but I can’t quite grasp it)
and virtually carve themselves, leaving the
creative and drunken Hallowe’en-ers time
and energy to, say, think it would be amusing
and spectacular to stuff the insides with
gunpowder, and then stand around slackjawed
as the fuse burned down.
But no more: I doubt we will ever we
scrub the stench from our rooftops and
pavements, and I fear more that those empty-headed
Wildwooders, who regained what
passes for consciousness in their ilk and
staggered away bumping fists and shouting
“duuuuuuude! Best ride ever!” and vowing to
make it “#1” on the Wildwood Party Calendar
next year (I, too, am puzzled as to how they
managed to pronounced the hashtag symbol).
Obviously, we will blow the bridges on
October 30 next year, but they are a cunning
lot, and have in the past been known to pop
up out of drains, giving Cape May the apperance
of a giant wack-a-mole game.
Anyway, we are done. Our focus now
needs to be on Thanksgiving. Obviously I
have mixed feelings on that day: I did after
all counsel against assisting the settlers:
“They’re not to be trusted,” I said, “look at
their pale faces and shifty eyes! They will
take our food, then before we know it there
will be strange self-propelled metal carriages
running all over our land, and vast
boxes full of fat people and cheap un-nutritious
food.
“Also, check out the blankets they’ve
given us... is that a scab in one? I’m not
wrapping myself in THAT!” Obviously
I had a touch of what granny called The
Gift, that very same preternatual sense
that shortly after had me quietly assume
the identity of a white fop of means. We’ve
always had a knack of being on the winning
side, us D’Caturs. Except at The Alamo. And
Waterloo. And possibly Culloden, if my suspicions
are correct
CAN’T MISS!
Celebrate the onset of sweater weather
if you like, but I prefer to think of
October as the beginning of teatime.
Tea is more than just six ounces of
hot liquid in a pretty cup. It’s a bit
of magic, an invitation to chat and a nod to
America’s roots.
Tea was born with a hint of whimsy almost
5000 years ago when wild leaves blew into
Emperor Shen Nung’s hot water. The brew
caught on, not only as a refreshing beverage,
but as a cure for several illnesses. It seemed
like magic — tea can somehow energize
lethargic patients and reduce insomnia, calm
the brain and provoke thought and stimulate
the appetite and reduce fat. Science recently
identified compounds in tea that explain these
effects, but other tea benefits remain mysterious.
Somehow, it seems that whatever
the question is, tea provides the answer. An
invitation to share a cup is a tongue loosener
— there’s a reason “spilling the tea” is slang for
revealing the truth. Perhaps that’s the explanation
for accuracy among fortune tellers who
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, enjoy a cup of tea!
read tea leaves — we reveal more than we
intend as we sit and sip. Some mediums will
pour an extra cup for the spirits who might
visit during a seance. Others will use tea-like
infusions in cleansing rituals designed to signal
ghosts that it’s time to leave, just as a host
might serve it to signal that the party is over.
Around election time, tea can help
Americans remember our rebellious birth.
Though the Boston Tea Party in 1773 was an
unpopular protest condemned by the likes of
George Washington and Benjamin Franklin,
the Crown’s over-the-top reaction in the form
of the “Intolerable Acts” fueled revolutionary
fervor and led to the first Continental
Congress. Boston’s small rebellion led to large
rebellion — the Declaration of Independence
was treasonous and had things gone the other
way, all signers could have been executed with
their survivors left penniless. The least we can
do to show our gratitude is cast a ballot.
Cape May offers many places to enjoy a
cup of tea, from Coffee Tyme to Avalon Bagel
to Tommy’s Folly. At Magic Brain on Perry
Street, you can add a scone or other pastry.
You’ll find the perfect brew for your needs
at Tea by the Sea — lavender to soothe you,
lemon to perk you up, strawberry daiquiri
tea if you’re already missing summer. There
are also wine bags and cookbooks for your
holiday shopping. Love the Cook has great
coffee and a wide selection of teas, along with
a magical scone mix you can’t miss.
Fall is Fire Table Season at Cape May Wicker!
Now is the time to set out your feeders
to attract wintering species.
The large number of Pine Siskins
moving through suggests this will
be a winter marked by large numbers
of winter finch like siskins and Purple
Finches. Evening Grosbeak? You should be
so lucky, but not impossible. Platform feeders
or large hopper feeders loaded with black-oil
sunflower seeds is the secret to attracting
this portly bulbous-billed finch. However, you
may not want swarms of grosbeaks at your
feeder. The “grospig” as it’s called in some
quarters can bankrupt your seed budget.
Pine Siskin’s can also break the bank.
Siskins and their close cousin the American
Gold Finch love thistle which is priced like a
prime cut of steak. You dispense it in special
tube feeders with small ports or mesh thistle
socks which the neighborhood gray squirrel
will chew to pieces, leaving your thistle seed
in a puddle on the ground. Many sparrow
species like the mixed-seed blends, especially
with millet. Avoid blends with corn as an
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ingredient. This inexpensive “filler seed” is
shunned by most songbirds and will end up
under the feeder, attracting rats or mice.
Another food offering to put out is suet.
These blocks of kidney fat are relished by
woodpeckers, nuthatches, jays, Carolina
Wrens and unfortunately, racoons. Bringing
your suet in at dusk will save you the trouble
of searching for it. As for that hummingbird
feeder, keep it up until a hard freeze. We still
have several species of western hummingbirds
that visit our feeder in late autumn.
What a treat to find a feisty Rufous or Allen’s
Hummingbird at your feeder. I hope you like
company — when word gets out, birders will
flock to your yard to see it.
Watching birds at feeders is a great way to
pass the time in this age of COVID isolation.
Place feeders away from windows or glass
doors but can still see them. If a bird-catching
hawk makes birds scatter, you don’t want to
have fleeing birds hitting your windows. Half
of all window strikes end in fatality.
Think of a hawk as another bird coming
to your feeder. By feeding birds, you are not
causing them to be killed. Hawks will feed
twice a day. Your feeding birds means the
hawk will catch dinner where you will see it.
Wild Kingdom, right in your own back yard.
For questions about bird feeding, the
folks at Cape May Bird Observatory have
answers. As for seed, Smeltzer and Sons in
Court House has a fine selection of quality
seed and suet blocks.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I know Thanksgiving is a month away, but
our family is already struggling to figure it out.
My mother is 75 and wants to have all 20 of us
over — inside, at the dining room table, gagging
on her dried-out turkey she is so fond of
making. This a concern on so many levels. My
kids are in their teens now and want a reprieve
from it. I am a better cook than my mother,
but she refuses to give up the apron. And then
there’s COVID. My siblings are going through
the same dilemma. What do we do? — Turkey
Challenge
Dear Challenge
I’m afraid you must all put on your big girl/
big boy pants and refuse to give in. If any of
your siblings have been quarantined, then she
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
should spend the day with them. Since she will
be the guest of someone else — they can do the
cooking or opt for Mom’s Dried Turkey Jerky.
You must be firm on this point as it is a concern
for her health and your digestion. Smooth the
blow by calling Cape Winds Florist and order a
beautiful table arrangement to replace the turkey.
Then brace yourselves for resistance but as
the BORG in Star Trek, Next Generation would say,
“Resistance is futile.”
Dear Answer Lady
I’m pretty sure my fiancé is in a texting/
flirting situation with my brother. I’ve seen
both of their cell phones at various times over
the last month when they weren’t looking. Is it
serious, I ask myself? I honestly cannot answer
that, and I think confronting either one of them
would result in denials and lies, then they’ll
turn on me for spying on them. The real question
is where do I go from here? — Suspicious
Dear Suspicious
The Answer Lady would suggest two things
— put a halt to any wedding plans. Use COVID
as a reason for the delay. Second, see how things
play out. Since you are already suspicious, you
will be looking for any evidence of betrayal. BUT,
if you are this distrustful of the woman you plan
to marry, you must have had a history of betrayal
or you are paranoid and jealous. Figure it out —
this is no way to start a lifetime. While figuring
it out, October in Cape May is the height of the
migratory season, take a nature walk to Cape
May Point State Park. Accentuate the positives.
Eliminate the negatives.
FRANKLIN is a feisty, 28-pound boy who
came to the shelter as a stray. His big personality
makes up for his size and he’s always
excited to run around the yard. Franklin is nervous
at first but will quickly warm up to new
people. He is learning leash skills and basic
manners but will make a great companion to
someone willing to continue his training.
BENJI is a 15-pound, one-year-old bundle of
energy. He came to the shelter when his owner
did not have time to take care of him and is
excited to join a new home. Benji knows basic
commands and is still learning new leash
skills. He loves to play fetch and run around
the yard. Benji would be best in a home with
older children that can continue his training.
WILLOW is a young girl who came to the shelter
as a stray but has been a happy pup since
she arrived. Willow loves to play fetch in the
yard and enjoys long walks on her leash. She is
still learning but is quickly grasping behavior
cues like not jumping when she’s excited. Willow
would be best in an active home with older
children who would continue her training.
BEZAIRE
A Candidate For ALL The People
Leadership Through Inclusion
and Cooperation
Inclusion of ALL is essential for the
future success of our city. Committee
appointments shall be open to all and not
just a select few. Open-mindedness and
the ability to compromise is essential in
successfully accomplishing goals.
Fiscal Responsibility
You deserve clear and concise monthly
updates presented at council meetings
focusing on any deviations affecting the
city’s financial stability. Curbing spending,
increasing grants, and long-range fiscal
planning are key to moving forward
prudently in this economic environment.
Project Timelines
Make a better effort to complete capital
improvement projects (such as the
Lafayette Street Park and Soldiers and
Sailors Park) on time and on budget.
Protecting and Strengthening
the City’s Historic Status
While change is inevitable, we need to
maintain focus on the core architectural
and design standards that have protected
Cape May’s National Historic Landmark
Status. All upcoming projects, public and
private, should be required to adhere to
these standards in order to maintain the
city’s Historical Designation and unique
character and charm.
Task Force for Pandemic
Economic Recovery
The city needs a vision and a formal
plan for moving forward in the current
pandemic environment. To aid recovery
for Restaurants, Shops and Tourist
Attractions, as well as Non-Profits such as
Cape May MAC, Cape May Stage and the
Nature Center, the city needs to help them
adapt to the new normal.
