In 1902, <strong>the</strong> South Staffordshire County<br />

Council commissioned Carder to visit and report<br />

on <strong>glass</strong> factories <strong>in</strong> Germany and Austria—an<br />

action designed to improve <strong>the</strong> competitiveness<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stourbridge manufacturers. The follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

year, <strong>the</strong> same organization sent him to <strong>the</strong><br />

United States. Carder visited Pittsburgh, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />

and Corn<strong>in</strong>g, where he toured <strong>the</strong> Corn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Glass Works (which he promptly dubbed<br />

<strong>the</strong> "Smokestack University") and met with T. G.<br />

Hawkes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>glass</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g firm T. G. Hawkes<br />

&C Co. This was not <strong>the</strong> first occasion on which<br />

Carder and Hawkes had done bus<strong>in</strong>ess; for some<br />

time, Stevens & Williams had been sell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Hawkes blanks for his cutt<strong>in</strong>g shop. Now, however,<br />

Carder and Hawkes jo<strong>in</strong>ed forces and<br />

founded Steuben Glass Works (Corn<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong><br />

Steuben County), with Hawkes as <strong>the</strong> majority<br />

shareholder and Carder as his junior partner and<br />

manager. The new factory was amaz<strong>in</strong>gly prolific.<br />

Carder experimented with batches and designed<br />

new shapes. Between 1903 and 1932<br />

(when Carder left <strong>the</strong> company), Steuben produced<br />

more than 7,000 designs—at an average<br />

rate <strong>of</strong> almost one every work<strong>in</strong>g day!
