2020! What can I say? I don’t think there is a person on the planet that could have predicted just how
crazy this year has turned out to be. But, in true Scotchie form, the Scotch College community has
rallied, and we are getting through together. In the current climate, live stage performances are few and
far between. As you know, our planned production of Matilda scheduled for August was cancelled due
to the uncertainties. But, at Scotch, where there is a will there is a way, the idea for ‘Stop the Presses’
was born!
We were determined to give the students a 2020 Musical and so a small production team began tossing
ideas around-the-table as to how we could best achieve this in the reduced timeframe. It was decided
that a musical compilation or showcase, if you will, of groups of songs from specific shows would give
our students not only a challenge but an opportunity to shine across multiple roles, characters and
stories. However, I didn’t want this to be a random collection so I set about thinking how I could link
these shows together. In the words of Katherine Plummer from Newsies, ‘This is big, lady, don’t screw
it up!”.
This year, in particular, there is one thing that we cannot get enough of and that is hope. All of the
selected shows you will see tonight, revolve around the common theme of hope. Whether this is the
hope of overcoming adversity or just the hope that things will get better; it is there, woven through
each story. These shows also revolve around the idea of retelling stories and although newspapers are
not as prevalent today, they are still a key source of information when it comes to retelling these
stories. This led to my decision to essentially turn the backdrop in to a giant newspaper, complete with
turning pages (thanks Craig!).
However, this would all just be ideas if it wasn’t for the constant and unwavering support of Scotch
College Senior Leadership team. Their support of the students, the production team and trusting me
with this wonderful task is second to none and I am eternally grateful. I also wouldn’t have been able
to make this happen without the support of my incredible team including the one and only Mark
Stefanoff. Please turn to the acknowledgement page for all of my thank you’s. But, very importantly,
to our Producer, Musical Director and my colleague Antony Hubmayer, your trust in in me to bring
this together is remarkable, every one of my crazy requests met with a resounding, “yep, sure!” so
thank you for your support and tireless energy.
And to the students, my, my, my, what an incredible bunch you are! The passion, focus, love and
energy you bring to the stage is something to behold. I am constantly in awe of each and every one of
you remarkable young people. Your support of each other and love of what you do is outstanding, and
I am incredibly proud to call myself a Scotchie and stand beside each one of you. Thank you from the
bottom of my heart for making this dream become a reality, now, go out there, “All you have to do is
SHINE!”
Musicals Synopsis
8
Come From Away
“On 9/11, the world stopped. On 9/12, their stories moved us all.”
Come From Away tells the true story of thousands of passengers who found themselves
stranded in Newfoundland, Canada when their planes were suddenly diverted due to the events
of September 11, 2001. 38 planes landed at Gander Airport (Newfoundland), doubling the
population of the town. The islanders in Gander and the surrounding towns opened up their
homes to the "plane people" regardless of race, nationality or sexual orientation. To alleviate
rising tensions and fear, the passengers were invited to be honorary Newfoundlanders (“Heave
Away”). We hear from the first female Pilot, Beverley Bass, and learn how the events of 9/11
have changed her view of the world (“Me and the Sky”). Relationships and lifelong friendships
were formed (“Stop The World”) despite the horror of the outside world. When the passengers
and crew were able to fly again, they exchanged stories of the immense kindness and generosity
that was shown to them by the Newfoundlanders in their time of need. Prior to boarding, a
Muslim traveller, faced with increasing prejudice, was subjected to a humiliating strip search.
Ten years later, the “plane people” reunite in Gander to celebrate the lifelong friendships they
formed in spite of the terrorist attacks.
Matilda
You may be familiar with Roald Dahl’s tale of Matilda, the extraordinary girl who dares to take charge
of her own destiny. With songs written by Tim Minchin, this fantastic story now comes to life on stage
featuring all of your favourite characters such as Bruce, Miss Honey and Matilda herself! Watch these
revolting children navigate their way through the Trunchbull’s school, using their wit, friendships, and
being just a bit naughty!
Sister Act
When Deloris Van Cartier, a nightclub singer, sees her boyfriend Shank and his gang murder someone,
she is put into the witness protection program. Deloris is sent to somewhere the police believe Shank
will never find her – a convent! Over dinner, Deloris learns how the other nuns received their calling to
the church (“How I Got The Calling”). Whilst at the convent, she takes Sister Mary Roberts under her
wing to help her find her voice (“Life I Never Led”). In order to keep Deloris out of trouble, the
Mother Superior places her in charge of the choir (“Raise Your Voice”). The choir gains widespread
attention including that off Shank and his gang. After a confrontation between Shank, his gang, the
nuns and Deloris finds its end, she finally appreciates what the nuns have done for her.
Newsies
Based on the Disney movie of the same title, Newsies follows the story of a group of Newsboys led by
seventeen-year-old Jack Kelly. When Joseph Pulitzer increases the price of the newspapers, the
newsboys go on strike – declaring themselves a union (“The World Will Know”). Young reporter,
Katherine Plumber, covers the strike (“Watch What Happens”). The lads spread the word to the rest of
the city’s newsboys who will not join without the support of Spot Collins, the leader of the Brooklyn
newsies. Davey and Jack convince the discouraged newsies to go ahead with the strike (“Seize the

9
Day”). Pulitzer sends in his goon squad and the police to break up the strike by force and Crutchie is
beaten and taken to the Refuge (a prison for young boys with awful conditions). When all appears lost,
Davey convinces Jack to keep fighting for what’s right (“Watch What Happens Reprise”). The
Brooklyn newsies join the strike and together, they print their own paper attracting the attention of
President Roosevelt who shuts down the Refuge.
Wicked
Come with us to the Emerald City! Wicked is the untold story of the two witches of Oz and takes place
before, during, and after the well-known tale of Dorothy Gale. Elphaba starts her journey at Shiz
University where she meets resistant roommate, Glinda Upland (of the Upper, Uplands!) Their
differences attract and form a friendship that is both fierce and resilient. As they “dance through life”,
they are faced with the trepidations that eventually separate them forever. However, their love for each
other endures.
Billy Elliot
In the mining town of Everington, amidst the miners’ strike against Maggie Thatcher and their working
conditions, we follow the story of young Billy, and his discovery and love of dance. Whilst Billy
withholds this from his family, Mrs Wilkinson, the local dance enthusiast, finds talent and potential in
Billy and encourages him. Billy’s widowed father, toils with allowing his son to further himself as a
dancer but sees the passion and joy that dance brings Billy. Billy auditions for the Royal Ballet School
in London, and ultimately gains admission to not only the school, but becomes a soloist for the
company. As Billy leaves for his training, the miners are forced back into work as the strike ceases
without any change to their working conditions. Our medley includes: “Shine, The Letter, Electricity
and Once We Were Kings”.
Hamilton
Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton has revolutionised contemporary musical theatre and taken the world
by storm! This show follows the story of Immigrant American Founding Father: Alexander Hamilton.
We are taken from the beginning to the end of Hamilton’s life, with lessons and stories of love, loss,
social climbing, political pursuits and above all, NOT throwing away your shot. Our arrangement
includes audience favourites: “Alexander Hamilton, My Shot, Schuyler Sisters, Helpless, Room Where
It Happens, Burn and Yorktown”.
Finale
From the musical Carousel, You’ll Never Walk Alone is regarded as one of the most uplifting and
hopeful songs of all time. Although this is, in its origin, a musical theatre song, it has become
synonymous with Liverpool City and Liverpool Football Club thanks to the Merseybeat band, Gerry
and the Pacemakers cover recorded in 1963. During 2020, the song has also been used as a song
comfort, hope and support across the UK and Europe for medical staff, first responders and those in
isolation during the pandemic. As a Liverpudlian, this song is very near and dear to me and I shared a
little of my story and why this song is so important with the students as they were learning the song.
Their rendition is truly moving and is something I’ll carry me with now and always, I know I’ll Never
Walk Alone.
