Can Macs get viruses?

For years, one of the biggest selling points of Macs was that they “don’t get

viruses.” [105] In 2006, as part of Apple’s famous “Get a Mac” advertising

campaign, Apple even made an ad that showed the healthy “Mac” character

giving a tissue to the sickly “PC” character. [106]

But are Macs really immune?

First things first: Macs can’t get Windows viruses. [107] That’s just because

any app made for Windows, whether a Google Chrome installer or the

nastiest virus out there, won’t run on a Mac. Think back to our analogy with

cars: the platforms are just incompatible.

Though Windows viruses won’t affect Macs, viruses built specifically for

Macs can definitely infect them. [108] But many people are adamant that Macs

don’t get viruses. [109] How could that be?

Testing the claims

People who say that Macs are invincible have two main lines of argument.

One argument is that Macs are so uncommon that hackers don’t bother

targeting them, and another is that Macs are so secure that a virus wouldn’t

be able to infect them anyway. [110]

Let’s look at the first argument. It’s true that Macs are uncommon: as of

2017, just one in 16 computers is a Mac, while most of the rest are Windows

PCs. [111] And since hackers usually just want to make money, the theory is

that they’d focus on Windows, which gives them more targets. [112] That’s not

a bad argument, but there’s a small catch: hacking a Mac might earn a hacker

more money than hacking a PC. Macs are more common in wealthier

countries, often clocking in at 20-30% of the computer market share in

western nations, and Mac owners tend to be much wealthier than their

Windows-toting friends. [113] That might give hackers more of a reason to

target Mac owners, since Mac-owning victims would be more likely to fork
