Welcome
I’m thrilled to welcome you—or welcome you
back—to the New Smyrna Beach Area. The
appeal of our lovely town goes far deeper
than our 17 miles of white sand beach and
highly rated surfing. Cutting-edge cuisine,
a nationally recognized arts scene, beloved
hotels, and historical ruins are just the
beginning of the adventure. With the ocean
on one side, the Intracoastal Waterway on the
other, and all kinds of exciting sustainability
efforts in between, our cozy city offers the
perfect getaway—whether you’re interested
in relaxing on the beach or discovering a new
passion. We can’t wait for you to experience
New Smyrna Beach for yourself.
on the Amtrak Auto Train, which runs
between Florida and the Washington,
D.C. area. Disembark at Sanford, Florida, about
35 miles west of New Smyrna Beach; it’s an easy
drive into town.
By Bus
ESCAPE
N e w S m y r n a B e a c h A r e a
SURE, IT’S EASY to categorize this stretch of Florida coastline as
a beach town; after all, the miles of pristine white sand and
tumbling tides make for an irresistible playground. But step beyond
the surf and you’ll discover that this area’s wonders stretch far
beyond the shoreline. There’s cutting-edge cuisine with a focus on
freshness and sustainability; welcoming hotels and inns; the calm
waters of the Intracoastal Waterway; the most biologically diverse
estuary in all of North America; a proud history as the second-oldest
city in Florida; a thriving arts scene; an iconic lighthouse; a charming downtown;
endless activities; and so much more. Yes, the beaches await, but every corner
brings new surprises. Give yourself enough time to take it all in.
WELCOME
Oak Hill
THERE’S SOMETHING FISHY HERE, AND THAT’S JUST THE POINT.
WORLD-CLASS FISHING attracts anglers to
this small city south of New Smyrna
Beach, and many head straight for
Mosquito Lagoon. Cast for monster trout and yearround
redfish; to add a taste of Old Florida, stay in a
bungalow at one of the fish camps. Explore the
ancient past at Seminole Rest, which features
prehistoric shell mounds and two turn-of-the-20thcentury
buildings. Then bring past and present
together at Goodrich Seafood, which began as
a retail fish shop back in 1910 and today serves up
mouthwatering po’ boys, oysters, fresh fish, and
delicacies like fried alligator.
PORT ORANGE
A brand-new park has put this riverside enclave in the
spotlight. Come bask in the glow.
THE GORGEOUS HALIFAX RIVER is a centerpiece of this city
just north of New Smyrna Beach. And now there’s a new
way to take in the view: Riverwalk Park, with paved
pathways and a splash pad for kids, makes for a great stroll. Or bring
your clubs and shoot for par on the undulating fairways at Cypress
Head Golf Course. Canoe and kayak your way around Spruce
Creek Park, take a boat tour on Cracker Creek, or step back in
time to explore the ruins of the Dunlawton Sugar Mill Gardens.
Endless exploration is just the beginning.
Edgewater
EXPERIENCE THE SLOW PACE OF LIFE BY THE RIVER’S EDGE.
TRUE TO ITS NAME, this city just south
of New Smyrna Beach lies along the
edge of the Indian River, putting great
fishing and spectacular views right at your doorstep.
It’s no surprise that legendary boat company Boston
Whaler recently expanded its headquarters here, or
that this has become the epicenter of the area’s
blueways. Launch from Menard-May Park to
explore these trails; paddle around mangrove islands
to see pelicans, herons, and other birds. Go angling
for redfish with Edgewater River Guide. Then dine
on fresh fish at hot spots like JC’s Riptides and the
Florida Roadhouse.
OSTEEN
Serenity, nature, and some down-home Florida cooking
imbue the Osteen area with a personality all its own.
BACK TO NATURE
Hike and horseback ride
among the 150 acres of
Hickory Bluff Preserve.
RURAL OLD FLORIDA comes to life in this
which overlooks the St. Johns River. Visit a multipurpose
inland community southwest of New
Smyrna Beach. Explore the flora and
fauna of Beck Ranch, a working cattle ranch turned
25-acre park. Search for wildlife among the cypress
and oak trees at the 150-acre Hickory Bluff Preserve,
trail like the East Central Regional Rail Trail, which
runs through Osteen from Edgewater. Then enjoy
Osteen’s old-school feeling with all-day comfort food
at the Osteen Diner, which serves dishes like “Mom’s
Breakfast” and good old-fashioned pot roast.
SOME SAY THIS CITY is the perfect size—large enough to offer a
rainbow of accommodations, yet small enough that each spot feels
personal and intimate. And from surf to shore, options abound.
Wave worshippers can wake to the delicious aroma of ocean air,
while landlubbers can loll in a historic B&B, a paddle fan spinning
quietly overhead. Luxury aficionados can revel in the lush
amenities of a private residence, campers can commune with nature,
and value seekers can discover that gracious service knows no bounds in
New Smyrna Beach. Wherever you lay your head, rest assured you’ll feel at home.
TURN OFF THE PHONE, put down the remote:
Gazing at the water from the comfort of your
you need. The area’s unique geography serves up two very
different ways of enjoying this experience. Choose a hotel on
the ocean side and sit out on your balcony while rays from
the ascending sun start to glance off gently curling waves.
Or stay along the Intracoastal and follow the lazy pace of
the water and the boats that ply its width. Whichever side
you’re on, a water-view room encourages some serious
relaxation and quiet contemplation. It also gives you a
front-row seat to the area’s sustainability efforts, always
working behind the scenes to preserve your view so that,
when you return, it will be just as pristine as it is today.
LOSE YOUR EYES and picture a coastal Florida
restaurant—what would it be? A table facing the
ocean, with just-caught seafood and an ice-cold
craft beer? You can certainly make that vision
a reality in New Smyrna Beach. But the city is
home to some culinary surprises as well: a cool
speakeasy serving artisanal cocktails; some
game-changing BBQ; and mouthwatering
vegetarian dishes. But while the breadth of offerings may
surprise you, the focus on culinary craftsmanship—beginning
with local, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients—is something
you’ll come to expect. So bring your appetite on this foodie
adventure: If you can imagine it, you can likely find it here.
TASTE
TIPPING THE SCALES
One area chef is on the front lines of a battle for more sustainable
fishing. Winning has never tasted so delicious.
FOOD IN NEW SMYRNA BEACH is definitely about passion, but it’s also about focusing on
protecting our natural resources. That means sourcing ingredients locally when
possible and ensuring that animals have been humanely raised or fished.
This has also become a priority nationally. One example: the “Smart Catch” sustainable
seafood program, run by the renowned James Beard Foundation, which trains chefs on how
to serve seafood that’s been farmed or fished in environmentally responsible ways. With more
than 90 percent of the world’s fisheries either fully fished or overfished, a growing number of
U.S. chefs are recognizing the importance of such practices.
That importance is why Third Wave Cafe, under the direction of Executive Chef David
Moscoso, has jumped the necessary hurdles to reel in its designation as an official James Beard
Foundation Smart Catch Leader restaurant. Moscoso and others know that preserving the fish
of tomorrow means taking bold steps today to marry great flavors with eco-friendliness.
RECIPES
FLORIDA YELLOW
SNAPPER
Ingredients
1 oz olive oil blend
6-7 oz Florida
Yellow Snapper
Directions
Set stove to a medium-high
flame. Add olive oil to an
8- to 10-inch sauté pan.
Once oil is hot, place fish in
the pan. Cook until done—
typically to 3 to 4 minutes
on each side, depending
on thickness.
HERBED ROCK
SHRIMP WITH
LEMON BUTTER
SAUCE
Ingredients
1 oz spring onion or
scallions
1 tbsp fresh chopped
parsley
1 oz olive oil
1 pinch of pepper flakes
1 oz honey
2 oz small rock shrimp
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp butter
Directions
Heat an 8- to 10-inch
sauté pan on a medium to
medium-high flame. Once
the pan is heated, add
olive oil. When the oil is
hot, add garlic and pepper
flakes and sauté both for
about a minute. Add rock
shrimp and sauté for about
another minute. Shrimp
cooks very fast, so be
careful not to overcook.
In the same pan, add the
parsley and scallions.
Finish sautéing them
until well blended—about
another minute—then turn
off the flame. Remove pan
from heat; immediately
add butter and honey.
Stir butter and honey into
sauce using a fork or tongs.
adding unique options like
IT’S A BOLD MOVE
to promise a California
wine experience so
complete that you name
your restaurant for it,
but high-energy hot spot
SoNapa Grille delivers.
Most of the wines are handselected
from, yes, Sonoma
and Napa, providing the
perfect complement to dishes
like crispy shrimp tacos and
the grass-fed burger. Or tuck
into a hearty dish like the
braised short rib risotto with
a roasted garlic cream sauce,
asparagus, and parmesan
cheese. Sitting under the
restaurant’s cathedral ceiling
and surrounded by wooden
barrels, you may think you’ve
died and gone to Napa.
You wouldn’t be too far off.
A Celebration
Not to Miss
NEW SMYRNA BEACH may feel like a laid-back surf
town, but make no mistake: This is a city that’s serious
about food and wine. The appreciation has become
so ingrained that residents decided to celebrate by
launching the annual New Smyrna Beach Wine and
Food Festival in April 2018. Now, springtime brings a
can’t-miss event: a magical evening showcasing more
than 250 wines paired with cuisine from acclaimed local
chefs, plus live music and a silent auction. Proceeds
benefit a local charity. Come lift a glass with us!
ADVENTURES ABOUND, WHETHER YOU STAY ON LAND OR HEAD UNDERWATER.
WITH OCEAN, the Intracoastal Waterway, nature
preserves, waves, and trails galore, the city is full of
playgrounds for outdoor lovers of all ages. No matter
what your passion, you’ll find a place to indulge.
Love the water? Explore 17 miles of pristine white sand beach
(beach yoga, anyone?) that run right into the Atlantic. Surfing, not
surprisingly, is a popular pastime, but it’s just the tip of the whitecapped
waves. Go scuba diving to get a close-up of shipwrecks, go
fishing for your dinner, or just float on your back in the Florida
sunshine. Need more? No problem. Head to the mellow waters of the
Intracoastal for kayaking, boating, and paddleboarding.
Landlubbers will be equally thrilled at the endless possibilities.
Numerous boardwalks give walkers and joggers a platform for
outdoor exercise. And miles of trails snake all over the area, leading
hikers through areas brimming with birds, reptiles, and marine life.
And if you love parks, be sure to bring your walking shoes.
Canaveral National Seashore is a sanctuary of beaches and barrier
islands, full of wildlife like sea turtles, manatees, and bald eagles;
GREEN LIGHT
From butterflies to blueways, the protection of our natural
treasures means more chances to commune with nature.
WHEREVER YOU GO in the New Smyrna Beach area, be sure to take a deep breath
and open your ears. Air, water, trees, sand, and animals are all thriving here—
and we aim to keep it that way, by taking our role as environmental stewards
COURTESY MARINE DISCOVERY CENTER
very seriously. One of the results of our efforts: We’re only the second city in Florida to
receive the title of Monarch City for supporting the imperiled monarch butterfly.
But we’re not stopping there. We’re laser-focused on maintaining and expanding our
blueways and greenways, to help preserve those areas and allow for environmentally sound
exploration on foot, bike, and horseback. We’re also in the process of finishing connectors
that will link New Smyrna Beach to Tampa, on the Gulf Coast. And we’re starting work on a
trail that will connect northeast and southeast Florida. We believe the results show, from the
cleanliness of our air and water to the health of our flora and fauna. Come see for yourself!
DISCOVER AMAZING.
Get Hooked
PASSIONATE ANGLERS KNOW: There’s nothing quite like casting a line and
hauling up a trout, redfish, or mahi-mahi. And opportunities abound in New Smyrna
Beach. Angle off the new riverside fishing pier at Smyrna Dunes Park; in keeping
with the area’s eco ideals, composite lumber made of recycled plastic materials was
used in the pier’s construction. You’ll also find flats and lakes perfect for fishing. Or
get out on the water with a fishing charter like Edgewater River Guide and end the
day with a proud haul (and some tales). What do you do with your bounty? Head to
a catch-and-cook spot, like JB’s Fish Camp, which will clean your fish and cook it
up however you like.
COURTESY ATLANTIC CENTER FOR THE ARTS
FOR DECADES, artists have made this
charming city their home, creating
beautiful treasures that have attracted
the notice of the national art scene. And nowhere is
this more evident than on a stroll through the Canal
Street Historic Arts District.
Start at The Hub on Canal; an incubator for more
than 70 artists, it’s the perfect place to appreciate just
how wide the range of local talent is. Contemporary
art fans can discover boundary-pushing sculptures,
paintings, and drawings at Gallery One Twenty.
Interested in signing up for a class or workshop
yourself? Do it at the Artists’ Workshop.
You won’t have to wander far from Canal Street to
see more. Check out Arts on Douglas and peruse the
work of Florida artists in a building that was a Ford
showroom back in the 1930s. You can get your hands
messy, too, by taking a pottery class at Studio Bleu.
But the city’s can’t-miss destination for art lovers
remains the internationally known Atlantic Center
for the Arts, a year-round exhibition space that
offers artist residencies and a range of programs. And
each January, ACA presents a three-day fine art show
called “IMAGES," held in the historic downtown area.
EXPLORE
GET THE
BACKSTORY
COASTAL FLORIDA may feel modern, but dig deeper and you’ll unearth
some important treasures from the past. Mary McLeod Bethune (1875–1955),
for example, founded a private school for African-Americans in Daytona
Beach and became a pioneer in the Civil Rights movement. Honor her memory at
Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park, the only area beach that African-Americans were
permitted to use in the first half of the 20th century. Come look for manatees as you
wander the boardwalk, fishing pier, and traffic-free beach. Then visit the
Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum, which pays tribute to African-American
culture and history in a restored church that dates to 1899.
Wind the clock back even more and explore the 1830s at the Sugar Mill Ruins. This
former steam-operated sugarcane mill employed hundreds of workers until Native
Americans attacked it in 1835. Today, you can walk among the archways and foundational
stones that remain, or wander the surrounding trails and relax under shady oak trees.
You can even trace the city’s route back to its origins. In 1768, Scotsman Andrew
Turnbull and 1,225 immigrants led the largest single attempt at a colonial settlement in
what became the United States. Today, Old Fort Park hosts the ruins of what some say
was Turnbull’s mansion. Others say it’s much older. Come decide for yourself!
