Book club
Hot reads and chilled liqueurs ...
this month’s book club is looking good!
There are a few authors who have us leaping for joy when we see a new
release ... and Lisa Jewell is right at the top of that list. Gripping, engrossing,
disturbing, her books are thrillers with heart-thumping, unexpected twists
that just take your breath away. Her latest, Invisible Girl, is about a missing
girl, an invisible man, and how we often look in the wrong places for bad
people and not noticing the real predators who walk freely among us in
plain sight. Century
The pay checks are huge. The work exciting. The drinks flow. But
people sneak into the bathroom for a hit of cocaine, people sleep under
desks, and sexual harassment is rife. The Boy’s Club by Erica Katz is set in
a corporate Manhattan law firm ... a place where if you don’t turn a blind
eye, the boys’ club is a dangerous place to be. Orion
We’re not serving wine at book club this month. Instead, we’re bringing
out the Limoncello. Why? Because it’s summer and we’re happy and in an
Amalfi kind of mood. Also, a few of the books we’ve chosen are
lip-puckeringly, cheek-suckingly, squeeze-your-eyes-shut scary. So a bit
of a theme going, yes? Our favourite version is Bottega’s Limoncino ... you
can find it at good bottle stores, or order online for R325 from takealot.com
The thrills just keep on coming. Shari Lapena (The Couple Next Door, A Stranger in the House ...
LOVE her books) has just released The End of Her, which is tension filled, fast paced, edge-ofyour
seat. A recently married and new mum of twin may be struggling with the disorienting
effects of sleep deprivation, but knows one thing is certain ... she has everything she ever
wanted. Until a woman from her husband’s past arrives and makes a horrifying allegation
about his first wife. He always claimed her death was an accident - but she says it was murder.
This one’s an all-nighter. Penguin
A missing patient is a hospital ward’s worst nightmare, and the disappearance of a newborn
baby from a maternity ward in a New York hospital creates a city-wide emergency. Then
another kidnapping, and a stabbing, take place ... rumours and accusations fly, and a midwife
teams up with a sceptical NYPD detective to solve the case. But the truth is far more twisted
than either of them could ever have imagined. The Midwife Murders by James Patterson and
Richard DiLallo is a thrill-a-minute paperback read. Arrow Books
Mark Billingham‘s Sleepyhead was released in August 2001, flew straight onto the top ten
best seller list, and was the biggest selling debut novel of the year. Cry Baby - the 17th book in
the Tom Thorne series - is its prequel. It’s set way back in 1996, when Thorne a young detective,
haunted by the moment when he ignored his instincts, and how that led to a
horrific crime. Now on his first case - that of a young boy who’s gone missing while playing
in the woods- and Detective Sergeant Tom Thorne is not going to let anything get in the way
of him solving the crime. Another great read from another favourite author. Little, Brown
Time for a little light
relief from murder, mayhem
and mystery. Hello Greta.
She’s flawed. She’s jocular.
And she’s played the part
of the funny fat friend her
entire life. But she’s hiding
insecurities behind her
big smile - because size
doesn’t matter when you’re
having fun, right?. Warm
and wonderfully moving,
Carmel Harrington’s My
Pear-Shaped Life, shows
us that, like Greta’s about
to discover, sometimes
the best moments in life
come when everything’s
gone a bit pear-shaped.
Businesswoman Candy Smith revealed herself to be a
homebody at heart. The very opposite of her persona
as the glamorous and glitzy founder of Free State
Fashion Week.
T
he secret to local businesswoman Candy Smith’s
success is taking a hands-on approach to every
venture whether it’s her fashion school, trendy and
upmarket nail bar or travel agency. Having started
her very first business making school uniform in her
teens it’s no wonder that she’s now a force to be
reckoned with but her family remains one of her
biggest passions.
Candy warmly welcomed us into her sumptuous
home in northern Bloemfontein and after all
Covid-19 protocol was observed she revealed herself as someone who
prefers her own company. “More than anything I love my own space. Many
people think that I’m an extrovert but I’m actually not. So on most weekends
when I don’t need to go anywhere I recharge by relaxing at home in my
room.”
The wife and mother of one however, explained that spa days here and
there are still much appreciated but since the launch of beauty and nail
salon Tammy Taylor Bloemfontein, her time is spent creating pampering
sessions for other people. The launch had to be postponed due to the
Covid-19 crises but thanks to her savvy business and marketing mind the
salon opened successfully even under Lockdown Level 3.
This isn’t the first time that Candy has had to make the best of difficult
circumstances during a pandemic. Travel and tourism had almost
disappeared during the last few months and while, business travel was
allowed her agency Unlimited Travel and guesthouse in Bloemfontein
suffered losses. So she rolled up her sleeves and quite literally practiced the
hands-on approach to business that she lives by.
“We have been out of a chef at the guesthouse so I decided to cook
everything myself. Cooking is something that I really enjoy doing and
surprisingly the guests really like my food,” she laughed. “My biggest surprise
was my son complimenting the cooking so that was great because I love
putting a smile on people’s faces.”
Besides being a homemaker, businesswoman and entrepreneur she can also
be considered a visionary. After studying fashion in Gauteng earlier in her
career the Welkom born and raised Candy decided to open a fashion school
for local creatives. She’s also passionate about reviving the local textile and
manufacturing industry to create jobs for young people and support small
businesses.
“Our textile industry is dying a slow death which is a shame because there
is a lot of potential here but we just need to upskill people. “I’m very vocal
about this because if we can revive the industry and give young people the
needed skills they can take over the factories and benefit from them. But I
believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” she said enthusiastically.
‘STRIKDASMAN’
trek
nuwe
baadjie
aan
ie jong entrepreneur, Ulrich
Venter, is in Sasolburg gebore
van waar sy ouers later na
Johannesburg verhuis. Die gesin
keer terug na Bloemfontein
waar Ulrich van sy graad 1-jaar af
grootword en sy skoolgaan. 31
jaar later woon hy steeds hier.
elke keer ‘n ander kleur strikdas wóú dra.
Teks: PIERCE VAN HEERDEN Foto: LUNA HUMAN PHOTOGRAPHYD
troubeplanningsdiens.
My passie vir
werktevredenheid.”
Twist and glow
Since we’re in an Isle of Capri mood (we can dream!) we’re obviously
From mask-related skin
irritations to nappy rash ...
Along with your sanitiser spray,
keep these two Eau Thermale Avéne
essentials in your bag. We’re already fans
of the Thermal Spring Water, which
is excellent for sensitive, intolerant
and allergic skin. It soothes, softens,
and restores skin’s natural balance,
and promotes skin healing. It’s used
to combat facial redness, to calm skin
irritation due to sunburn, razer burn
or after a facial or surgery, to calm
and soothe nappy rash, or simply to
cool yourself down while travelling or
playing sport. Now we’ve discovered
the new Eau Thermale Avéne
Cicalfate+ restorative and protective
cream. Use after the spring water for
immediately soothing. And it’s great
for everything from mask-related skin
irritations, superficial cuts and burns,
localized dryness, after treatments laser
and chemical peel. It’s safe for everyone,
from babe to adult, and can be used on
body, face and lips. You’ll find both on
eau-thermale-avene.co.za, the spring
water ranges from R85 for a small
handbag spray to R229 for a familyfriendly
size; Cicalfate costs R209.
Beets. Carrots. Barley. Take your beauty cue from nature
We’re fanatical about wearing our masks (and hope you are too). But what
we’re not fans of are the breakouts they cause, particularly for those who’re
already suffering from oily, problematic skin. The Placecol Cleansing Chlorophyll
Facial is rich in chlorophyll derived from young Barley plants, which helps to
detoxify the skin and decrease surface shine, while also reducing congestion
and inflammation. Combined with High Frequency Treatment, this facial destroys
the bacteria responsible for breakouts and combats congestion. With powerful
anti-oxidants to increase the skin’s immunity and help reduce free radical damage,
the result is visibly refreshed, clearer skin. If you just feel your skin is a little tired
(aren’t we all?), there’s a Oxygenating Vitamin A Facial - highly effective for
revitalising and boosting tired skin. Naturally rich in Vitamin A (hello carrots),
it tightens and firms the skin, stimulating micro-circulation which increases
oxygen and nutrients to the cells. This facial is rich in powerful anti-oxidants to
help protect the skin from harmful free radical damage, a major cause of ageing.
Then there’s the Betanin Hydration Facial ... an intensely cooling and hydrating
facial which contains Betanin, a potent anti-oxidant that protects cells from free
radical damage and gives beetroot its deep red colour. Rich in Vitamin C to boost
immunity and stimulate cell function, plus
generous quantities of essential skin health minerals, such as iron and folate,
and with beetroot’s deeply detoxifying properties, this facial leaves the skin feeling
refreshed, renewed and energised. These facials cost from R475 to R525.
Visit a chiropractor and
GET ADJUSTED
Joint aches, muscle aches or back pain? Maybe you just need a good, relaxing
crack in your back. A visit to a chiropractor may just be the answer.
Text: HEIDRE MALGAS
Get It spoke to Dr Kerri Stagg about the benefits of and history behind
Chiropractic, one of the most popularly used forms of manual therapy
worldwide as it does not use drugs or other consumable medication and only
limited auxiliary treatment modalities. It offers great potential for cost-effective
management of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders.
The goal of Chiropractic is to be a health profession specialising in the diagnosis,
treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal
system and the effects of these disorders on the functioning of the nervous
system and general health.
The history behind Chiropractic started in 1895, at Davenport, Iowa, USA, when
Daniel David Palmer met a man named Harvey Lillard, who had suffered hearing
problems for over 17 years, following an injury to his back. Palmer discovered a
‘lump’ on Lillard’s back and suspected that a vertebra might be out of alignment
and pinching a nerve going to Lillard’s ears. He adjusted the vertebra, and
immediately Lillard’s hearing improved. After several such treatments, much of
Lillard’s hearing was completely restored. Chiropractic was born.
“Chiropractic care has been known to successfully and safely treat many
conditions and can help to reduce or eliminate the symptoms associated
with various afflictions that are nerve-, muscle- or joint-related. Such
neuromusculoskeletal conditions can range from neck pain, headaches,
whiplash, lower back pain shoulder pain, arm and elbow pain, tingling in arms
and hands, hip pain, leg pain, sciatica, knee pain and even foot pain,” Kerri says.
Headaches and migraines, sciatica, scoliosis, spinal disc injuries such as disc
herniation, sports-related injuries, tendinitis, pregnancy-related pain, arthritis,
sprains and joint pain – any condition that is therefore related to any joint in the
body can potentially be helped through chiropractic care.
Although most chiropractors predominantly focus on the spine and how it is
functioning, the biomechanics of the upper and lower limbs is also of great
importance. “Chiropractic is suitable for all ages because it is a non-invasive
treatment option. Anyone can benefit from chiropractic care, including babies
and children who suffer from spinal problems as they grow older and their
nervous system adapts.” This therapy focuses mainly on the spine and nervous
system and how well both are functioning. It’s a chiropractor’s task to evaluate
the biomechanical structure of the spine and to ensure that each one of the
individual vertebrae are moving freely and are not restricted or fixed in any way.
“Chiropractic treatment helps to restore normal movement to restricted joints
and thereby helps to result in a decrease in pain, inflammation and muscle
spasm.”
Chiropractic treatment, like most other forms of physical
therapy, is not pain free but the discomfort of a treatment
is temporary and is usually followed by a significant
improvement in the patients presenting complaint. “I would
recommend therapy in a wide variety of situations. As a
proactive treatment that is done in order to optimise the
functioning of the spine and avoid pain; in pregnant women
to help relieve back pain and to help ensure an easier delivery;
in babies who have been injured during the birth process and
exhibit symptoms of colic, sleep disturbances or abnormalities
in their movement patterns; in patients experiencing pain and
or numbness as a result of their work; and in the elderly who
experience pain as a result of degeneration of their spine.”
Chiropractors rely on non-invasive treatment
methods and will refer patients to medical
practitioners should medication or surgery
be indicated. Chiropractors work with the
spine and joints and focus on creating
optimal alignment
through careful manipulation in order to bring about pain
relief for patients suffering from numerous conditions. “At your
very first chiropractic session, your complete health history
will be taken and questions will be asked as to what type of
pain you might be experiencing. After the case history has
been taken, a complete physical exam will be performed in
order to assess your condition.” If your chiropractor determines
that your case can be treated through chiropractic care, the
treatment you will receive will generally consist of highly
specialised manipulative techniques often referred to as
adjustments. Such adjustments are performed by hand and
consist of a high velocity, low amplitude thrust being applied
to a specific vertebra in the spine.
Adjustments are safe and some patients can experience
immediate relief as the normal joint motion is restored and the
nerve is freed of any restrictive pressure or irritation. However,
some
patients require a few treatments in order
to correct the problem. No two patients
are the same, so be patient as your
body starts to realign itself and learns to
adapt to the changes that are occurring.
Tastes from a
Levantine kitchen
When life gives you lemons ... you’d better hope it gives you chickpeas too.
Then, with just a few more ingredients, you’re set for a celebratory feast. Dip into the
new Hummus to Halva cookbook for the most delish dishes for a spring party.
Mint & Ginger Lemonade
Easy to make and really refreshing on a
hot summery day, this drink is great for
parties, too. Just scale up the quantities
and, for those who like an extra hit, try
it with a splash of white rum.
(Makes: 6 glasses. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook:
5 minutes. Chill: 2–3 hours)
You’ll need:
150g granulated sugar; 150ml water;
70g piece fresh root ginger, scrubbed
and sliced (there’s no need to peel
first); juice of 8 lemons
To serve:
Chilled water and ice cubes; 6 fresh
mint sprigs; wafer-thin strips of fresh
root ginger, cut with a vegetable
peeler (optional)
Compiled by: KYM ARGO
To make:
Put the sugar, water and ginger into
a small saucepan and heat over a
low heat, stirring until the sugar has
dissolved. Bring to the boil, then take
off the heat, cover with a lid or plate
and leave to cool at room temperature
for two to three hours for the flavours
to develop. Strain the lemon juice into
a large measuring jug – you should
have just over 400ml. Strain in the
ginger syrup and stir to mix, then top
up to 1.7 litres with chilled water and
ice cubes. Stir together, then pour into
6 glasses and add a mint sprig and
strip of ginger, if using, to each.
Garlic & Lemon Sauce
This is a mixture that adds a different
dimension to any hummus dish. We
don’t put garlic in our hummus but we
love drizzling this sauce over the top
– the acid from the lemons together
with the bitterness of the garlic and
spiced saltiness of the pickled chillies
make it irresistible.
(Serves 4. Makes 150ml . Prep: 5 minutes.
Stand: 30 minutes)
You’ll need:
Juice of 3 lemons; 3 garlic cloves,
very finely chopped; 2 pickled chilli
peppers, drained and finely chopped;
sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
To serve:
Hummus and warm pita breads
To make:
Put all the ingredients into a bowl
and using a fork, stir together to mix.
Alternatively, put in a jam jar, screw on
the lid and shake well.
Leave to stand for 30 minutes or so for
the flavours to develop, then strain.
Drizzle over plates of hummus and
serve with warm pita breads.
From Hummus to Halva ... hello spring food
Winter’s been great ... all heavy stews and lovely warm
puds with custard or cream. But we have to admit, we love
it when the weather turns a little warmer, and spring is a
fabulous season ... all new beginnings and light food and
dining al fresco. Hummus to Halva is the most wonderful
cookbook. Crammed with recipes from a Levantine kitchen,
it’s been compiled by Ronen Givon – born and raised on a
kibbutz in Israel and, he confesses, obsessed with hummus,
and Christian Mouysset – who didn’t taste hummus until he
went to uni ... then he ate it with anything and everything
he could. The book is just a fantastic celebration of food to
share. There’s hummus every which way (with mushrooms
or slow cooked chunky beef (Christian’s favourite dish in
the book), with lamb and pine nuts or Moroccan meatballs.
There are lovely salads – tabbouleh and fattoush, and breads
and dips and gorgeous labaneh – sour yoghurt cheese. The
halva cookies, cardamom coffee and ouzo and grapefruit
slush round off a delicious book. Food to make, to share, to
celebrate. Published by Pavilion.
Turn your room into a
PLANT SANCTUARY
When your favourite room is calm and peaceful, you can be too! And turning your
room into a plant sanctuary does just that.
Do you need to be a botanist or
expert?
No. Plants only need three things – water, light and
patience. House plants are there to be enjoyed.
They have incredible air purifying properties but
most people buy plants for aesthetic reasons, so
make sure the plants you do eventually purchase
are ones you love and ones that enhance the
décor in your home.
Wondering what are some of the
best plants to keep indoors?
Get yourself some peace lilies (spathiphyllum
wallisii). This is one of my favourites because they
are available everywhere and can tolerate low
light environments. They bloom a few times a
year so you get to enjoy beautiful white lilies. My
next choice would be a rubber fig (ficus elastic) as
they too are easy to find and can tolerate some
neglect. Spider plants (chlorophytum comosum)
are everywhere and you can propagate one from
a neighbour’s yard so it’ll practically be free. If you
have bright light in your home and tend to forget
to water your plants, then get yourself a cactus or
any succulent.
Text: PIERCE VAN HEERDEN
Some advice on getting started?
Get one plant, and for this, visit a local nursery
where you can speak to one of the workers to help
you get the perfect plant. Tell your local botanist
about the conditions in your room, for example if it
is warm or cold, humid or not.
Here are 5 tips to get you going:
1. DO NOT buy a plant because it’s trendy.
Research the needs and care of your dream
plant. 2019/2020 saw the rise of the fiddle
leaf fig and everyone went out to purchase
them. Unfortunately this plant is difficult to
keep alive as it needs lots of light, but too
much light will burn the leaves. The flats
most people are staying in don’t have a ton
of sunlight, so the plant doesn’t survive. It
doesn’t like being moved around and it will
drop healthy leaves if its unhappy. Plus: they
are expensive.
2. DO NOT OVERWATER YOUR PLANTS.
One would believe that forgetting to
water plants is the number one cause of
indoor plants dying, however, your plant
is more likely to die from overwatering.
Overwatering leads to root rot and dying
roots aren’t able to provide your plant with
enough nutrients or water. A good rule
would be to stick a finger into the soil and if
it comes out dry with no soil on it, it’s time
to water.
3. DO get pots with drainage holes. Make sure
to buy pots with drainage holes. If a pot
doesn’t have a drainage hole, then drill a few
holes in the pot. This is a great way to ensure
that your roots get oxygen and the plant
doesn’t become waterlogged.
4. DO buy plants that make you happy. You’re
more likely to take better care of your
plants if you love how they look and if they
genuinely put a smile on your face.
5. DO limit the use of fertilizer. Fertilizers
encourage growth but overuse of these
will burn out the soil and kill root systems,
thus killing your plant. Only fertilize in the
growing season.
AN EYE FOR
DESIGN
Anything but ‘small
town’ would be
the perfect way to
describe a wellrounded
design
enthusiast such as
Driekie Thomas
Driekie Thomas sees herself as a story teller. Her clients
hire her to write their biography, which she does by using
fabrics, furniture, architectural elements and personal items.
“The key to a great design is capturing the spirit of the
client and the essence of the space,” Driekie says.
Driekie was brought up in a family that always had an
eye for style and design. So naturally she was exposed to
many design elements throughout her childhood.
Her mother used to work for Vlaamse Linne
in Bloemfontein and she so ever clearly
remembers as a little five-year-old how
she used to go with her mother to
see various customers. During
her university days, she started
working part time for her
mother’s boss, Willie Grové, at
Vlaamse Linne in Bloemfontein.
“I sold curtains from house
to house for some pocket
money. That soon became a
good income.” At this stage
Driekie did not realise that she
was developing her passion in
the design industry. Later on, her
mother decided to buy Vlaamse
Linne and started her own workshop
and showroom in Riebeeckstad, which
had great success.
After her studies, Driekie decided to join the
family business in the administrative section. “When I
started to assist customers with quotations and installation
of curtains, the light bulb went on!” This was when she
realised that she would want to become more than just
installing curtains for clients. She then went on to complete
various design courses to improve her skills and knowledge
of the industry.
After five years she decided to apply for accreditation
at SAGID, which is now called the IID, the platform for
professional interior designers and architects.
It took her another five years to accumulate enough
big projects from the planning phase up until installation
before she had enough projects to submit. Driekie received
her full accreditation as a professional interior designer in
2005. “This is when I realised if I would like to further my
career, I will need to set up my own showroom and also
start to import,” she explains. In 2007 Driekie did just that by
starting her own interior company called House of Interiors
in Welkom. In 2011 she made a bold move to Bloemfontein
with her family and opening her doors in a new town. She
is proud to say that House of Interiors now supplies
everything under the décor sun.
Driekie finds her inspiration
through meeting various people.
“It gives me such a great sense of
accomplishment when I meet
a customer and I can feel and
see they are starting to realise
they can also have a beautiful
home.” She always makes sure
that she is on top of her game
by travelling the world to
find some of the best quality
interior décor in order to keep
her clients happy and amazed
by what she offers.
“I consider myself extremely
lucky that I get to do a lot of large
projects for international and other
customers in the bigger cities. This
challenges my way of thinking,” she shares.
Some of her greatest finds come from antique
shops as well.
When it comes to freedom regarding interior, Driekie
advises, ”Stay true to yourself and don’t get influenced by
a pretty picture.” She is much excited about the future of
House of Interiors as one of her sons will be joining her
team soon. And as she has said in the beginning, design
runs in their blood and her son has proven that once more.
Looking back at her life, she would surely hope that she
could teach her boys, who are now grown men, to have a
good work ethic and to show perseverance. No matter what
life throws at them, I tell them to get up, dust themselves off
and move forward. “Always remember to put family first and
never rely on your own strength. I can boldly say, whatever
get out and enjoy new places and things to do.
Here are a few destinations close to Bloemfontein
you and your family can explore
Ladybrand might not be such a popular destination as for example
Clarens, but if you visit the town for a weekend you’ll enjoy a welldeserved
rest. Cranberry Cottage offers just about all you need,
with several luxury and deluxe rooms as well as self-catering
accommodation. Set in a lovely Colonial-style building, the retreat
offers a spa and wine cellar. After a spa treatment at Phomola African
Retreat, all you’ll want to do is relax and maybe after enjoy a drink in
their cellar room or take in the greenery on the outside deck area.
Imvelo Safari is only a short drive out of Bloemfontein and offers
game drives, hunting and quad biking. What makes it special, is
that it is a retreat from all the noise. You will enjoy it whether you’re
an outgoing person or an introvert. It is an escape from a busy
and noisy environment, to a peaceful and fun environment. They
offer multiple services, including accommodation, functions and
conferencing facilities with the largest venue accommodating
about 1000 people. You can take in the splendour of nature while
star gazing over a glass of champagne or enjoy a rugged game
drive.
When the sun starts to dip behind the mountains, the
magic begins and you have a front-row seat of the
crystal clear Karoo sky on unbelievable starry nights.
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
Eco Karoo Lodge is a 100% off the grid, Eco friendly accommodation
destination and venue, situated on the 4200 ha working farm,
Knoffelfontein, which is situated near Luckhoff in the Free State.
The Karoo offers majestic scenery unlike anywhere else on earth,
including spectacular sunrises, endless horizons, surreal silence and
the crisp, distinctive smell of Karoo vegetation. The idea with the
design of Eco Karoo was to embrace all of this. Every space – from
bedrooms and bathrooms to the living room and kitchen – opens
outdoors. All rooms face east over the same plains where there’s
nothing quite like watching the sun paint the sky in shades of pink
and orange as it kisses the moon goodnight. The lodge is an ideal
site for star gazing, hiking, mountain climbing, nature trail walking or
cycling, bird watching, swimming and hunting.
Let’s be honest. It’s been a long, hard slog this year. Lockdown. Curfews.
Restrictions. But now travel’s open. We can cross borders and head off to
hotels and guest houses and lodges. And we can have a glass of wine
when we get there. Life is good. And particularly good, we have to tell
you, if the escape you’ve planned is to Saseka Tented Camp.
The jewel in the crown of the Thornybush collection of lodges,
an escape here is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. Not only because it’s
sensationally beautiful, but also because of the special end-of-lockdown
rates ... it’s one of the few times - heck, perhaps the only time - this lodge
will be South African friendly, cost wise.
So what’s so special? Designed by architects and designers Silvio Rech
and Lesley Carstens, the lodge cleverly and seamlessly combines classical
style with cutting-edge design, and takes attention to detail to a whole
new level. From the roof over the massive, tiered deck which mimics
the dappled light of a tree canopy to the botanical prints on the tents’
ceilings, which, besides being aesthetically pleasing, also educate since
they include the Latin names.
The colours used throughout the lodge delight and surprise ... although
they shouldn’t, since they reflect the hues of the surrounding bush.
Think ivory for the environmentally-friendly flooring that mimics the
colour of the sand in the river below, dark olive, sage and apple from the
Jackalberry, Apple Leaf and Leadwood trees, and occasionally touches of
pink, picked up from the flowers in the area.
The main area, with a sexy little bar and wide open deck, overlooks the
dry, seasonal Monwana riverbed, and has comfy intimate areas for sitting
and doing as little as possible, and dining tables set along the edge so
you don’t miss the ellies stroll past while you’re lingering over breakfast.
Glamping is taken to luxe new heights in the tents ... it’s all eye-catching
black mosquito nets, draped floor to ceiling windows, bespoke furniture,
a romantic bath and adventurous outdoor rainfall shower, and each
with a private deck and plunge pool. It would be unusual for you not to
sometime during the night hear the low grunts and moans of a lion or
the whooping call of a hyena.
For groups of up to six, there’s an uber luxury, private Villa, with its own
central lounge, dining area, pool and an outdoor area which you’ll find
it difficult to tear yourselves away from. Villa guests also get their own
private game vehicle and chef, and children are welcome. Massive spoil!
Meals, too, are created to surprise ... so dinner may be around a fire in the
river bed with traditional - albeit really glammed up - lodge options, or
up on the deck with true gourmet options. It’s all great platters of tapas
or grilled calamari or tempura prawns or lamb loin, it’s mango salsa, and
ashed brinjal, and smoked raisin puree. Sounds pretentious ... it’s not.
Obviously, game drives are the highlight of any trip to the bush ...
and with exceptional trackers and guides and an animal-attracting
combination of terrain, rivers and vegetation, sightings are frequent,
close up and exciting. Although nothing’s guaranteed, this area is known
for it’s leopard ... spotting a massive male leopard on the hunt (we did), a
female with her kill up a tree (we did) and a mum with her babe basking
and playing in the sun (we did) made for an unforgettable trip.
Okay ... let’s chat about the once-in-a-lifetime offer. A stay at Saseka
usually costs R15805 a person a night, but the post lock-down special
(for South African residents only), is R4999 a person a night, with a
minimum two night stay. This includes accommodation, all meals
(breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner), hot beverages, early morning and
late afternoon game drives, and local sundowner drinks. Extras include
optional guided walks, and laundry, and the lodge does (unfortunately)
have Wifi. These rates exclude peak season (December 16, 2020 to
January 5, 2021). Details: www.thornybush.com
