Young Storykeeper Volume III

To celebrate Cruinniú na nÓg, Great Lighthouses of Ireland and Fighting Words invited 7-12 year-olds to become Young Storykeepers. Your lighthouse-inspired stories are incredible! Fighting Words and Great Lighthouses of Ireland have devoured every single one of the 1,256 stories, poems, illustrations, song lyrics and even stop-motion animations submitted for the Young Storykeepers initiative. With so many entries, these wonderful works will be showcased in a multi-volume Young Storykeepers digital magazine over the coming months.

THE ADVENTURE<br />

The waves washed up on the grubby walls of<br />

the old lighthouse.<br />

Inside, the sailor sat on his rodent-chewed<br />

chair as he drank a bottle of beer. The sailor<br />

was drunk, he always was. He looked out of the<br />

broken window and laughed. Then he got off<br />

his chair and squished his chubby belly through<br />

the door. He walked down the lighthouse steps.<br />

The sailor went into the kitchen and<br />

dropped his bottle in the sink. He sat back down<br />

on his rodent-chewed chair. Suddenly the chair<br />

tipped back and the sailor whacked his bum off<br />

the cold stone floor.<br />

The sailor sighed and got up. “It’s all right,<br />

Mr and Mrs Bum Bum. I will take better care of<br />

you in the future,” said the sailor as he rubbed<br />

his bum.<br />

Just then the doorbell rang. “Argh, probably<br />

the Girl Scouts selling biscuits. Oh well. I’ll have<br />

‘em all,” chuckled the sailor. He trudged down<br />

another flight of stairs. He opened the door to<br />

find a small girl and a huge white wolf.<br />

“Who are you?”<br />

“I am your niece,” said the little girl.<br />

“What’s your name?” he said.<br />

“My name is Lily.”<br />

“Oh yeah, you are my niece,” said the<br />

sailor. “Come in then.”<br />

“Come on, Snowy,” Lily whistled the wolf<br />

as they bounded upstairs.<br />

“Where is my room?” Lily asked.<br />

“In here,” her Uncle said.<br />

“COOL,” Lily said jumping on the camp<br />

bed and waving the sheets around.<br />

“Aw man,” said the sailor. “Kids!”<br />

Hi, My name is Olivia and boy, do I have a<br />

story to tell you.<br />

The other night I went to bed and<br />

woke up in a strange place. I was petrified.<br />

Everywhere I looked there was sand and<br />

sea, but it was not like any beach I had seen<br />

before.<br />

The sand was soft and the sea was<br />

bright blue. To be honest, I don’t know why<br />

I was so scared, it was quite beautiful. As<br />

I looked around I saw a big lighthouse. I’d<br />

never seen anything like it before.<br />

I went inside to explore. I walked in the<br />

door and everything was so neat and tidy. I<br />

walked up the stairs, a little bit scared and<br />

excited. There was so many colours and<br />

shapes, it was so beautiful. When I got to<br />

the top of the stairs I could see the flashing<br />

light of the lighthouse.<br />

I looked out the window and I saw<br />

amazing views across the water. I walked on<br />

another bit and I came to a small opening,<br />

where I could hear the waves from the<br />

water and children playing in the sand in the<br />

distance. I could hear the dolphins squeaking<br />

and splashing while swimming. I looked over<br />

and saw this beautiful mermaid - her tail<br />

was amazing. She had long blond hair and<br />

beautiful skin. She was so pretty. I couldn’t<br />

believe my eyes.<br />

I woke up and it was all a dream, a<br />

lovely dream.<br />

Once upon a time, there lived an old<br />

man named Larry but he was called The<br />

Lighthouse Man by his friends.<br />

His son James hadn’t seen Larry in eight<br />

months and although he had been writing to<br />

him, it just wasn’t the same. James was so<br />

desperate to see his dad that he decided to<br />

buy a small rowing boat and get to him that<br />

way. James had to drive three hours to get<br />

to the coast, take the boat off the car’s roof,<br />

put it in the water and hop in.<br />

Because of his lack of experience,<br />

James forgot to check the forecast. When<br />

he was halfway there, he accidentally let go<br />

of one of his oars and started to panic. Then<br />

a gust of wind blew his boat towards a rock.<br />

Thankfully, James saw a small fishing boat<br />

with a very kind man in it.<br />

The boat had an engine and was<br />

named Betsy Bell. It was a lovely little boat.<br />

The captain, Andy, saw James and helped<br />

him in. When James told him about what<br />

had happened, Andy said that knew Larry<br />

very well and told him he’d make sure he got<br />

to him safe and sound.<br />

When they arrived, James thanked<br />

Andy. When Larry saw James, he gave<br />

him a great big hug. Then they had dinner<br />

together in James’s house. One week later,<br />

Larry took early retirement and he moved in<br />

with James. They all lived happily ever after.<br />

James was sure to learn all about boats<br />

and safety after that!<br />

We were playing on an enormous beach on<br />

a beautiful sunny afternoon. Soon, it was<br />

evening and we were getting ready to leave.<br />

When we were on our way back to the car,<br />

we met Uncle Dylan.<br />

He asked us if we would like to come<br />

on his boat before we left. We replied “Yes!”<br />

So we got on to his big, yellow boat and put<br />

our life jackets on.<br />

Then we set off on the big, blue sea.<br />

We saw pretty birds soaring through the sky.<br />

Fifteen minutes later we saw the sky getting<br />

darker, darker and DARKER…soon the<br />

waves were getting bigger and BIGGER!!<br />

After a couple of minutes Uncle Dylan<br />

couldn’t steer the boat and the waves were<br />

rough and it was so dark. Then, we saw a<br />

light and thought it might be coming from<br />

shore, so we sailed towards it.<br />

As we got closer and closer, we<br />

could see it more clearly and it was a<br />

LIGHTHOUSE. The lighthouse helped<br />

guide us safely back to shore by showing us<br />

the danger like big, giant, grey rocks coming<br />

out of the sea. I could not believe it.<br />

When we got to shore, Uncle Dylan<br />

told us some facts about lighthouses. He<br />

said, “The first lighthouse in North America<br />

was built in 1716 in Boston Harbour and a<br />

lighthouse on the cliff warns ships to keep<br />

their distance.”<br />

We said, “Thanks for the adventure!”<br />

and got in our car and headed home.<br />
