Funding for the work will be sought from the city council’s Long Term Plan. Peden hoped the reduction of sites throughout the port town would make Lyttelton as much of an attraction as Akaroa. “Akaroa is known around the world as a stand-alone attraction, as a place to go and hopefully Lyttelton will become the same because it also has a lot of history” The investigation which led to the works being pursued was conducted earlier this year and produced a heatmap which illustrates the areas across the city and peninsula in most need of regeneration. Akaroa was identified as an area vulnerable to environmental hazards within the heatmap. Council staff say since early March when the heatmap was first considered by councillors, it has become apparent the economic effects associated with Covid-19 are likely to have exacerbated issues facing weaker areas and more deprived communities. In response to the findings of the investigation, city councillors endorsed the central city and Linwood/inner-city east area as priority locations for regenerative activity within the current financial year. Progress in the development of community housing in areas of need is another priority for the city council in the short-term. Fulfilling short-term objectives within the heart of the city will involve continuing to progress with Project 8011 which looks to boost the central city population to 20,000 by 2028, the initiation of a “vacant sites programme,” alongside the continuation of the overarching central city action plan, Covid-19 socio-economic recovery plan and Enliven Places Programme. The city council will also aim to lead cross-agency work in progressing the Inner City East/ Linwood Revitalisation Plan and suburban centre Master Plan. Longer-term priorities include supporting localised regeneration initiatives along the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor and leading a push for improved POTENTIAL: An empty section on the corner of Oxford St and Norwich Quay. Improving the state of the Bishopdale Community Mall by addressing the council’s land holdings within the centre has been listed as another priority. The city council recently endorsed plans to work with anchor tenants within the mall on small-scale revitalisation, and to develop an investment case to see what more can be done, and at what cost. Guided walks to resume at Botanic Gardens THIS WEEK will see the resumption of guided walks by the Friends of the Botanic Gardens guiding team, but with a difference. Pre-lockdown, the guides offered daily walks from the museum from September to April, with the great majority of customers being overseas tourists. The landscape has changed and the guiding programme has had to change with it. From October to December this year, the guides will be offering a selection of daily 45min walks in different parts of the gardens. The guides love to share the stories of the unique Botanic Garden, stories of its history, of its place in the history, and stories of trees and plants, such as the iconic Kauri tree which belongs to an ancient group of trees from the times of the dinosaurs. A relative of the kauri was discovered as recently as 1994 in the Blue Mountain region of New South Wales – six specimens of this tree are now planted along the drive near the visitors’ centre.
