Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV
Sharon, Steve
Greeting from Undertow Central, situated
here in the birthplace of country
music, Erma, NJ. As you long-time
readers know (and you short-time
readers are about to find out) I have
an extensive background in theater, where I
managed to make my living for much of my
adulthood. Right here in cool Cape May. Well,
we’re finally going to mine that vein here at
Exit Zero with a special dinner theater event
on Monday, October 12. My original show,
Young Dracula (a spiritual sequel/ homage to the
brilliant Young Frankenstein), will be showing at
4:30 and 7:00, with a portion of the proceeds
going to the 2021 West Cape May Christmas
parade. (The 2020 parade was canceled due
to Covid, but if they’d just called it the West
Cape May Christmas Peaceful Protest the virus
would have ignored it, but I digress.)
The show ran elsewhere in town a few
years back and people seemed to enjoy it.
We were even nominated for a Broadway
World award. But it is not, to put it mildly,
Shakespeare. Rather, it’s a silly little trifle
meant to make you laugh, smile and occasionally
groan. There’s even a few song and dance
numbers! So, to all my old theater friends,
here’s a chance to revisit one of my better
shows. And to all the new friends I’ve made
the last few years at Exit Zero, here’s a chance
to take a glimpse into my previous life (and
twisted mind). But most importantly, it’s a
chance to raise good money for a good cause.
By the time you read this there SHOULD
be a way to reserve your tickets online or
by calling Exit Zero Filling Station. Seats are
first-come, first-served so get in there early
and often to secure a good one. Trainwreck
potential is very high so you’ll want to be there
to witness it. Live theater at the gas station
restaurant might be peak 2020.
Which is more excruciating, the Phillies
bullpen or the Eagles defensive secondary?
Discuss.
After work the other night, EZFS bartender
Gordon Sterling was talking about how wet
and salty his feet get on the boat (during the
day he works at East Coast Water Sports) and I
found myself getting a little aroused. Might be
time to arrange a date night with the Mrs.
Apparently I missed a great quote of the
Week opportunity when Katie Dowe was
talking about what a great finger flicker she is.
What a filthy little crew we have here at EZFS.
It was so cold last weekend my band was
called T-t-t-t-t-t-N-T-t-t-t-t-t-. At one point
on Saturday night my throat was literally frozen.
Singing into a 40-degree, 20mph headwind
for four hours is... challenging. And my
poor guitar player Tim Joyce not only couldn’t
keep his machines in tune, it felt like he was
I’m not sure how this outside dining
From the aforementioned Tim
hearing several singers last week,
told me, “You’re better than any
of them.” Seeing as Tim doles out
I watched him go from kitchen
finally opening his own place.
Which is why it was so shocking
and disturbing to see him share a
Facebook photo using the “what
Joanne, I accept your apology
The Theater Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
What if you didn’t have a stage
or lights or even an audience
— could you still move people
by reading a play? It’s about the
story and performances — it’s
time to check out a virtual reading at Cape
May Stage. Happy, a one-act play, premiered
last week and is available at capemaystage.
org — you don’t want to miss it!
Donald (Michael Basile) buzzes the
apartment of George “Happy” Haliday (Jesse
N. Helmes). Happy is currently a janitor but
was a star rookie for the newly formed New
York Mets decades earlier in 1962. Donald has
a ball his father caught for him when Happy
hit a foul back then. He needs Happy to sign it.
One baseball. One autograph. A host of
curves in a story that hits home. Basile and
Helmes are exceptional and make you feel
their characters both separately and when
they interact. You’re drawn into the story
slowly but certainly. It is beyond remarkable.
Roy Steinberg expertly directs. Alan
Zweibel is the playwright. Zweibel is an
award-winning writer and SNL alum. He was
also a writer on the Tony winning Billy Crystal
play 700 Sundays. Happy was adapted to a short
film in 2019 for the New York festival “Stage
to Screen.” I’ve become a groupie of this story
— all thanks to this Cape May Stage reading.
Also streaming at capemaystage.org
is Adrift, a short play by Richard Allerman.
Imagine you live on a luxury cruise ship with
all the amenities but only one drawback —
there’s an apocalypse on every shore you pass.
How’s that for a new twist on an “end of the
world” scenario?
It opens with couple Betsy and Todd,
ship residents played by Alison Fraser and
Anthony Newfield. She complains how the
ship is not stopping in and he reminds her
they’re trapped on the boat because the world
is filled with warfare, pandemics, and widespread
natural disasters. Fraser is so engaging
— you almost forget this is a reading.
Newfield plays opposite her with a rapport
that makes you feel they’re in the same room.
Also online, Victoria’s Secrets — a onewoman
performance starring Candace
O’Donnell as Queen Victoria — yes, THE
Queen Victoria. She is fun to watch, her heir of
royalty will delight any of you Brit-o-philes!
Elsewhere on the site, you’ll find interviews,
Broadway celebrities in unique performances,
and many other readings from world-renowned
actors. There’s something for everyone
among the selections at capemaystage.
The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
shall never forget the Cape May
Mermaid, although at that time she
was known as “Half Woman, Half Fish,
ALL Freak!” and was the star attraction
in the Wildwood Traveling Circus
that used to hop from town to town like a
summer pox. The circus was the usual fare:
mutants, freaks, sports and uglies, aka a
random sampling of its home town’s population,
dressed in scanty, colorful clothes
with painted faces.
But that day I will never forget: I was
wandering the circus grounds with a band
of Cossack horsemen (in town for the Cape
May Rodeo) and scoffing at the shows on
display. Then I glimpsed The Mermaid and
stopped in my tracks. She was a beauty
beyond description, a fusion of our two
species; from the waist up, a double of the
great Sophia Loren, from the waist down, a
glittering, scaled tail. We made eye contact
and nothing more had to be said.
That night, after close, I revisited with
wirecutters, a knobkerry and a hipf lask of
malt for courage, plus a burlap sack. I wirecut
the fence, knobkerried the muscleman
on guard duty and drank the malt. The
Mermaid was asleep in her tank, half out
of the water, forlorn and lovely. I clasped a
hand over her mouth lest she accidentally
scream and alert the owners, but she saw
me and smiled. I bid her hush, slipped the
sack over her (gently), and we were off.
Within no time we were home, and I
carried her to the Point and slipped the sack
off. She clasped me around the neck and we
kissed. She went to speak but I hushed her
with a finger and whispered: “My love, I will
not condemn you to a life of misery away
from your natural envionment. It is best
that I set you free and you can come visit
once a year, at this same spot.”
Her eyes widened and she started to
shake from fear, no doubt at being torn
apart from me so soon, but before she could
object I hurled her far out into the swirling
waters. Her last words were: “I shall never
forget you, my two-legged love”, though the
wind caught them and made them sound
like “No, you damned fool you don’t underst
…” then she was gone with a wave.
She never did come back, though every
year I waited: possibly her own family made
her see the sense of a clean break so as
to reduce the heartache. Not long after, I
happened to find a fragment of iridescent
green-scaled fabric, with a zipper, washed
ashore not far away. A relic from a costume
party in a faraway land, I thought, how lovely.
WHAT IS ORDINANCE 392?
Ordinance 392-2020, on this November’s ballot, is for ONE
Public Safety Building in Cape May. This will be a central
hub for first responders including police, fire, and EMS in
Cape May. The building will house two facilities, one for fire
and one for police with flexible shared spaces uniting them.
It will be located at Franklin and Washington Streets, the
same location as the current fire house.
WHY DO WE NEED THIS?
While the idea of a consolidated public safety building is
not a new one, it became much more relevant after 9/11. A
building that allows for the maximum coordination among
first responders and acts as a centralized communication
hub in the event of a crisis made sense to public safety
experts. When faced with the horrific and basically
irreparable conditions in both the current police and fire
stations in our City it became clear that a unified public
safety building should be considered. Both the Fire Chief
and Police Chief are in favor of one joint building. They will
have the ability to operate a command center out of one
building in addition to carrying out their respective daily
missions, and responding quickly, competently, and
professionally to any public safety situation. This is critical
to efficient emergency management functions. A building
shared by both departments also reduces the cost of
maintaining duplicate facilities and duplicate functions in
two buildings.
WHAT’S THE IMPACT ON CITY
BUDGET & TAXPAYERS?
According to the City Auditor, a 15 million dollar bond
would increase the tax rate by 6/10th of a cent, which
means a $500,000 house’s taxes would increase by roughly
$50 a year. More importantly, the city would not have to
stop all other projects due to the debt of the new public
safety building.
HOW WILL IT LOOK?
The Public Safety Building is in the concept and design
phase. The proposed facility will hold the same character
and charm as the architecture popular in Cape May. This
new facility will integrate twenty-first century public safety
features, such as community access, latest technology,
support service coordination and sustainability. Final
design will have additional input from the Historic
Preservation Commission.
Paid for by Citizens for One Public Safety Building
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OVER
SEPARATE FACILITIES?
In August 2017, the Public Safety Building Advisory
Committee began researching the one building concept.
Given the knowledge, training and expertise of Chiefs
Coulter and Marino, we learned the following:
• The “unified” command center or one Public Safety
Building will ensure better coordination of resources,
deployment of personnel and communication among
first responders during a hurricane, health emergency, or
large scale community events.
• Many routine calls require the presence of police, fire and
EMS, working relationships and response time will be
enhanced as first responders operate from one location.
• The Public Safety Building will locate all safety functions
for residents and tourists in one, ADA centrally accessible
location.
• Builds pride in our civic presence and improves the overall
operations for Fire, Police and EMS to deliver crucial
services to their community and to thousands of visitors
to Cape May.
• Complies with growing regulatory requirements for all
first responders.
• Improves efficiency and cohesion of public safety
services at a central location within the City of Cape May.
• Can accommodate full time, summer, male and female
staff and allows for future growth of both police and fire
departments.
• Reduces long-term burden of maintenance costs
incurred with two separate buildings while contributing to
a more efficient delivery of public safety.
• Ensures that the 911 Commission, Department of
Homeland Security and FEMA “coordinated response”
and “unified command” elements are in place for special
large-scale community events, health emergencies or
natural disasters.
• Improves and highlights the Firefighters Museum and
memorial garden.
HOW WILL WE GET IT DONE?
The community’s support of this project is essential with a
YES vote on Ordinance 392-2020. Once the bond is passed,
we will be able to move forward with the project and the
construction of the building. The next steps will include
demolition of the current fire station as the new building
goes in its place, preserving the Victorian design elements
of the streetscape.
WERE ANY EXPERTS INVOLVED IN
THE NEEDS ASSESSMENT?
USA Architects is a premier company specializing in Fire,
Police, EMS, Public Safety and other public facilities with an
extensive relevant resume. In addition, fire and police
experts were interviewed and participated in the planning
phase. The USA team was complimented by highly
experienced and knowledgeable consultants with past
project experience and some who know Cape May well:
O’Donnell and Naccarato: Structural Engineers; Bala
Engineering: Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, Fire
Protection, IT, Security; Advantage Engineering:
Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering; Hill
International: Cost Estimating.
WHAT MAKES USA ARCHITECTS
QUALIFIED ON THIS SUBJECT?
USA’s approach to projects incorporates a process of
intricate planning on municipal levels and working with key
personnel to thoroughly plan a project that is efficient and
effective. In a highly collaborative and creative setting the
design team and the Advisory Board committee discussed
and analyze the key features of this very unique building:
Civic Presence, Functionality, Security, Constructability and
Durability, Data Collection and Analysis, Budget
Development, Project Schedule, Cost vs. Benefit, Periodic
Reviews, Code and Zoning Analysis, Sustainability, and
Completing the Work in a Professional and Cost Effective
Manner. USA’s knowledge of the process and aptitude of
current trends strengthens the civic presence of a building
and improves the overall operations so that Cape May’s
civic organizations may continue to deliver critical services
to their community.
Please learn more about our in-depth proposed plan for the new Public Safety Building and view
high resolution photos and site plans by following us on Facebook and visiting our website.
Paid for by Citizens for One Public Safety Building
WHERE DID PRICING COME FROM?
USA Architects uses Hill International to create a cost
estimate using cost per square foot from recent projects,
including the Public Safety Project in Collingswood which is
currently under construction.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE
FIREFIGHTERS MUSEUM?
The seemingly historic Firefighters Museum was actually
built in 1984 by volunteers to house the Fire Department ‘s
1928 American LaFrance pumper truck and hold a vast
collection of antique fire fighting paraphernalia and
equipment. Some date back to the turn of the century,
preserving and displaying the evolution of modern day
firefighting. Unfortunately, where they stand, these
priceless artifacts and antiques are not being properly
protected. The current building lacks heat, air conditioning,
security, and ironically, no fire alarm and sprinklers. In the
words of Chief Alex Coulter, “The Museum has no fire
detection or fire protection. It is non-compliant to state
and local fire codes.”
All Members of the Citizens for Public Safety Building are
concerned that these precious sources of learning and
inspiration are at risk of being destroyed by fire, theft and
exposure to the extremes of heat and cold temperatures,
which is why we believe it should be rebuilt.
The proposed Public Safety Building includes an updated
museum at the corner of Franklin and Washington Streets,
which is where the current museum stands. This secure,
climate-controlled area will feature the 1928 LaFrance
Pumper — which is currently undergoing costly and
extensive renovation. All of the memorabilia will be
catalogued and preserved rather than exposed to volatile
temperature changes and humidity.
Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, get to a winery!
A
lot of people are turning to
Shakespeare during this pandemic.
It’s only fitting, since the pandemic
of his time influenced his work.
Outbreaks of plague closed London
theaters for long stretches, surviving Londoners
bore scars of disease, and mass death affected
all aspects of English life. Shakespeare was
gloomy — he likely meant it when he called
mankind “a foul and pestilent congregation of
vapours.” It’s easy to imagine that his mourning
over his young son, Hamnet, shows in Hamlet.
That exploration of grief and isolation seems
suited to our current times. Imagine a modern
Hamlet, forced home from college to deal with
his dysfunctional family, his hometown girlfriend,
and responsibilities of adulthood. Like
many young people, he is alternately nasty and
noble. We still debate his advice to Ophelia —
does he point her to a convent to escape the
evils of the world, or because she is too evil for
the world? Invite your friends to ponder this
issue with a visit to a winery.
Sunday Brunch at Cape May Winery is outdoors
and accompanied by live music. There’s a
tapas menu of tasty treats like avocado toast
and crab cake benedict. Sample a wine flight
and take home a souvenir glass and a few bottles.
Take social media pictures in the vineyard.
At Willow Creek Winery, lift your heart with
yoga — Vinyasa in the Vines is on Wednesday
and Friday mornings for $25, including a postclass
sangria, or Sunday mornings for $15, sangria
not included. They also offer music and a
firepit Saturday evenings. Enjoy charcuterie,
local musicians, and wine. For information,
visit willowcreekwinerycapemay.com.
At Turdo Winery — turdovineyards.com —
outdoor tastings allow you to find your favorites.
Park on the street, wear your mask, and
respect the “first come, first served” policy.
Hawk Haven — hawkhavenvineyard.com —
also offers outdoor tasting, wine by the glass,
and a “small bites menu.”
To combine your pleasures, visit Cape May
Cigars and Wine at 421 Washington Street,
where you’ll get advice and tastings. Can’t you
see Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern sitting
on the steps of Elsinore Castle after raiding
Gertrude’s wine cellar, debating which reds
stand up best to Italian cigars? Or consider
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Want to witness a miracle? Go
down to the beach and watch the
tiny sandpipers playing tag with
the waves.
Adults will have pale-gray
backs and have spent June to mid-July in
the high-Arctic regions of the Canadian
Archipelago or northern Greenland. Now
they are migrating south, some to winter at
the tip of South America, a distance of 9,000
miles. Quite a feat for a bird that weighs two
ounces.
As miraculous as this sounds, seek out
the darker backed juveniles. No more than
two months old, these long-distance migrants
have arrived here with no guidance. “They
followed the adults,” you think. No — the
adults migrated first, leaving before the chicks
had fledged, in the case of females. Males
leave two weeks later, the kids bat cleanup,
leaving as winter is closing in. Why the staggered
migration? Resource allocation. Flying
in shifts allows birds to use the same stopover
areas without having to compete for food.
How do these two-month-old birds know
how and where to go? That’s the miracle I can
partially answer as the brains of Sanderlings
are hot-wired to migrate on routes that are
largely offshore. Those that make it pass this
genetic wisdom on to the next generation.
Those that fail, don’t earn the privilege of
breeding — remember Darwin.
The real miracle is most birds migrating
through Cape May are migrating for the first
time. In autumn, first-year birds flood the
population. Many songbirds migrate at night,
trusting that come daybreak, they will be over
a habitat that meets their needs. Billions of
birds thread this narrow finger of land and
it’s why Cape May is famous among students
of birds and why protecting their habitat is
paramount.
Thinking about cutting back that weedy
edge between you and your neighbor? Don’t.
Young Common Yellowthroat or Northern
Waterthrush will thank you. While neither of
those are endangered, they still deserve the
chance to pass their genetic dowery on. As the
Passenger Pigeon and Eskimo Curlew prove,
vast numbers are no buffer against extinction.
These once abundant species were lost
to unregulated hunting and habitat loss. The
pigeon needed mature, mast producing forest
and the curlew depended upon grazed prairie
in Spring and the Rocky Mountain Locust,
once the most abundant animal in North
America and now also extinct. Humans eradicated
the locust and by default, the curlew.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I love T-shirts but my girlfriend thinks
they make me look fat and sloppy. I don’t wear
them when we go out or when I go to work. I
only wear them around the house. I’m tempted
to tell her what I think of those skirts she’s
so fond of that make her hips look like hoola
hoops. I know better than to go there but one
of these days I fear my mouth might get in the
way of my brain. How would you handle this
Answer Lady – Fashion Challenged
Dear Challenged
There are lines that we sometimes cross as
a couple, either out of concern or out of intolerance.
Your girlfriend has made her opinion
known — she does not think that is a good
look for you. The beauty of men is that they so
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
often don’t care. Comfort is the greater goal. At
the end of the day, what you wear is your business.
Perhaps a more tactful approach would
be to tell her you have no intention of giving up
T-shirts but if she would like to visit Galvanic
and pick out some casual shirts, you’d be happy
with that. As to her own fashion challenges,
better to leave that one alone for now, but a gift
certificate to Cotton Company might spark a
shopping spree for both of you.
Dear Answer Lady
It’s about the toilet seat being up. Our toddler
is currently being potty-trained and my
wife is insistent that on top of learning to use
the big, scary commode, he also remember to
put the seat down. We’ve had more than one
argument about this and I feel, in this instance,
I am right. I also think she is passively-aggressively
trying to chastise me for my own toilet
seat misdemeanors. What about it, Answer
Lady? — Potty Peeved
Dear Potty Peeved
The Answer Lady is inclined to side with
you, but suggests a compromise. Baby Steps. In
this case, literally. Strongly suggest to her that
you keep the focus on one goal at a time. The
first goal — using the big, white porcelain eddy
without fear of being sucked down into the
vortex. Then — the manners that come with its
use. And by the way, that rule applies to you as
well. Lead by example. Now, in the meantime,
all three of you need to chill out. Take a night
and go to Sunset Beach. Play a round a miniature
golf and enjoy the sunset. Life is short.
He has excellent leash skills and enjoys long
best in an active household with a family willing
BEZAIRE
A Candidate For ALL The People
Leadership Through Inclusion
and Cooperation
Inclusion of ALL is essential for the
future success of our city. Committee
appointments shall be open to all and not
just a select few. Open-mindedness and
the ability to compromise is essential in
successfully accomplishing goals.
Fiscal Responsibility
You deserve clear and concise monthly
updates presented at council meetings
focusing on any deviations affecting the
city’s financial stability. Curbing spending,
increasing grants, and long-range fiscal
planning are key to moving forward
prudently in this economic environment.
Project Timelines
Make a better effort to complete capital
improvement projects (such as the
Lafayette Street Park and Soldiers and
Sailors Park) on time and on budget.
Protecting and Strengthening
the City’s Historic Status
While change is inevitable, we need to
maintain focus on the core architectural
and design standards that have protected
Cape May’s National Historic Landmark
Status. All upcoming projects, public and
private, should be required to adhere to
these standards in order to maintain the
city’s Historical Designation and unique
character and charm.
Task Force for Pandemic
Economic Recovery
The city needs a vision and a formal
plan for moving forward in the current
pandemic environment. To aid recovery
for Restaurants, Shops and Tourist
Attractions, as well as Non-Profits such as
Cape May MAC, Cape May Stage and the
Nature Center, the city needs to help them
adapt to the new normal.
