COLOUR DOESN’T ALWAYS NEED TO BE COMPLICATED. WITH THE LUXELIGHTS COLOUR

SERVICE FROM WELLA PROFESSIONALS, YOU CAN PERSONALISE LOOKS FOR EVERY

CLIENT WITH A CURATED SERVICE AND TRANSFORM IT INTO CASH WITH LITTLE EFFORT

WHEN YOU DRILL down into the base concerns of clients, their

needs remain much the same as they always have. Covering grey

hair is still the number one reason why clients aged between 35

and 55 visit the salon. While Millennial and Generation X clients

are generally open to changing and tweaking their hair, that stays

within the realm of an elevated, perfected natural look.

The biggest barrier is almost always a fear of commitment.

That always-on mentality means they’re often resistant to the

time commitment that comes with colour, as well as reservations

about potential damage. So subtlety, speed and care should be

what to consider when enticing these clients. If only there was a

service that could do all this… oh wait, there is.

02 | PAINT

Inoducing Luxelighʦ

Forget full heads of highlights that take

hours to deliver and grow out a little

too… obviously. Forget blocky colour

results and bold colour contrasts. The

future of hair colour is all about building

dimension cleverly. It’s time to focus

on enriching the roots and using soft

blends to create natural shadows, as

well as emphasising natural highs and

lows within the length and ends.

With only a few tweaks, using what the

client already has to work with, they can

walk away with the illusion of natural,

sun-kissed and youthful hair colour.

The Luxelights service from Wella

Professionals is a simple three-step

process that can give clients that

updated, refreshed look in next to no

time, allowing you to fit more clients into

your columns and ultimately emerge

with more time and energy to spare.

Wella Professionals is dedicated

to adapting to the shifting needs and

wants of clients, to be able to offer its

partner salons the best tools to allow

them to to capitalise and adapt. Times

are tough, and Wella is continuing to

break down traditional colour processes

to give you something new to tempt

clients with.

ONE – LUXELIGHTS

Break up the appearance of over-saturated

lengths. Section large weaves and apply,

keeping colour away from the root.

TWO – ROOTS

Add a shadowed root colour or

blend away and cover natural

grey regrowth.

THREE – GLOSS

Finish the service with the perfect

toning, gloss-giving service to tie

everything together.

IT’S NATURAL TO WANT MORE

The Koleston Perfect ME+ Pure Naturals range is the perfect partner for the

Luxelights service. Flex your creativity to blend bespoke shades for each client,

while ensuring the same brilliant results each time. The Pure Naturals range

has expanded into a new territory, giving you even more choice for limitless

grey coverage possibilities. The new Resistant Cool Cover shades deliver 100

per cent coverage with intense cool tones for an anti-brass effect, which mix

perfectly with the other Pure, Ultra and Resistant Cover tones.

LOCATION,

LOCATION,

loca

LUXELIGHTS IS ALL ABOUT PLACEMENT. WHEN IT’S SUCH A SIMPLIFIED

PROCESS, IT’S DOWN TO YOUR EXPERT EYE TO ASSESS YOUR CLIENT’S STYLE

AND PERSONALISE EACH SERVICE

NO TWO HEADS of hair are the same, so placement is where

you can really showcase your skills and keep clients returning to

your chair. The principle is as simple as creating natural-looking

dimension to hair that otherwise appears uniform and dulled by

a lack of variance. The great thing about a Luxelights treatment is

that it’s great on all hair lengths and types.

Pull attention to your client’s facial features with careful

placements around the cheekbones, the eyes and jawline that

help break up longer lengths. Use Luxelights in a horizontal

pattern around the head for a halo effect to really showcase

curls with the varied tones. Give the appearance of thicker hair

for finer locks by using medium weaves, or help to break up the

appearance of coarse hair with medium slices.

Luxelights is ultimately simple, but infinitely variable and able to

really capture the attention of clients who would usually overlook

colour services.

Which shades do I chse?

It can be difficult to walk that fine line between keeping to a client’s natural look and offering them something

different enough to justify time and expense. For a harmonious appearance, stick to shades that are within

three levels of each other. Use warmer, lighter colours to reflect the light and give the illusion of volume

THERE’S A CHILL in the air, and it’s being echoed in

the distinctly cool colour palette that’s on-trend for

A/W20. We’re seeing everything from icy blondes

and soft wheat shades through to deep brunettes

with a touch of blue, or perfectly balanced and

neutralised balayages. It’s time to put colour on ice

and dive deeper – L’Oréal Professionnel is taking

things cooler than ever with an expanded range of

cool tones.

Clients are keen to seek out these cooler shades,

looking to ride the latest colour trends or to refresh

their colour and banish brassiness after the

warmer summer months. L’Oréal Professionnel’s

cool colours and sophisticated finishes can help

you to reset and refresh any head of hair which has

slid into unwanted warmth.

ADAM REED, UK EDITORIAL AMBASSADOR FOR L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL, HAS CURATED A NEW COOL DOWN MENU

FOR THE ADAM REED LONDON TEAM TO TAP DIRECTLY INTO THIS THIRST FOR COOL RESULTS

Creative HEAD: Tell us about the new Cool Down services…

Adam Reed: The Adam Reed London colour menu works really

well as a starting point for client inspiration – it’s about taking

a consumer demand or a trend like ‘cool tones’ and speaking

about it in a client-friendly way. We know that there has been a

heightened desire for cool tones, and through our Cool Down

menu we wanted to come up with an offering that covered every

possible hue on the ‘cool’ spectrum. Whether clients want high

commitment, low commitment or a colour that sits somewhere

nicely in-between, the Cool Down service menu covers it all.

We wanted the palette and techniques to be something that

everybody could experience.

CH: How will the cool trend help engage existing clients, and

possibly colour clients who haven’t been to the salon in a while?

AR: I always like to give my clients something to think about,

whether that’s immediately while they are in the chair, or a

suggestion for the next progression of their colour. It’s good

to get them thinking about their hair and appointments as a

journey. Showing a client that what you are creating together is

constantly evolving, and that you are not sitting within a trend

but sitting within a palette, shows you are giving them options.

It’s important to showcase that you are up to date, continuously

thinking about offering something different and providing

options, which is what will drive clients in and bring women

back to the salon.

CH: Do you have any tips to achieve the ultimate cool results?

AR: It’s all about the palette. My team are artists and an artist

needs an extensive palette, incredible tools and an abundance

of knowledge about technique. It’s important to keep an open

mind and create something that is really personal for every

client in the chair. I have been doing a lot of seasonal colour

blends using a cooler palette and the results are wonderful.

Think ash tones with a cooler finish, but every single one I

create is completely individual. It’s all about a really subtle

placement of colour, which I personalise to every single client,

and then using toners to keep a cool but rich finish.

PAINT | 09

The feel¯gd facr

Right now, it’s all about reminding clients why they come to you in the first place – the personalised finish that gives them the smile

you love to see. L’Oréal Professionnel is here to equip you with the tools you need to tone and neutralise in any colour scenario

EVERYONE WANTS TO feel like a million dollars when they leave

the salon. Almost a third of women in the UK use hair colour to feel

good about themselves 1 – and why wouldn’t they, when it has such

an immediate and lasting change on a person’s appearance?

With L’Oréal Professionnel’s Majirel collection, colourists can

banish brassiness and unwanted warmth, which is a known

concern for women after the summer months. 2

Whether they are looking to turn heads or to subtly improve

their natural look, the Majirel colour collection is the perfect

palette to pair with your sought-after skills.

FOR THE COLOUR-SHY… UPGRADE VISITS

Tempt cautious colour clients with L’Oréal Professionnel Majirel Glow.

Encourage colour take-up among your cut and blow-dry clients with

these 18 delicate, translucent shades for a next-level natural result

tailored to their natural shade and break down the barriers of what

people expect from a colour service. Not everything has to be incredibly

bold and different, clients can enjoy a luminous, reflective colour with a

neutralised finished for mirror-like shine with less base colour.

FOR EXISTING COLOUR CLIENTS… KEEP THEM HOOKED

With different tones, colour combinations and colour techniques, it’s

easy to tweak and adjust looks each visit so your client keeps feeling the

mood-boosting change. The Majirel Cool Inforced range from L’Oréal

Professionnel is boosted in cool reflects for a truly neutral or coolleaning

shade change. These nine true-to-tone shades are for clients

who want a natural cool tone or a cool beige that lasts in-between

appointments.

FOR THOSE WHO THINK THEY DON’T MISS SALON COLOUR… RE-ENGAGE

Entice clients back to the salon with colour change services for a new

seasonal look. Majirel Cool Cover has 19 shades to create those intense,

true cool reflects. This cool coverage gives deep neutralisation, even on

darker bases. With the highest concentration of extra-cool, blue reflects

in the Majirel range, it fights back against any brassiness by neutralising

natural warmth at the root. A great combination is to use Cool Cover at

the root to remove any warmth and either Majirel Glow or Majirel Cool

Inforced on the lengths and ends for a softer neutralised result.

The me f ning

Educating your clients about the ins and outs of toning will open

a whole new world of colour for them. DIA Light from L’Oréal

Professionnel is an ideal choice when it comes to refreshing

colour work, tweaking tones and offering a fresh finish to clients

who don’t have the time to dedicate to a complete makeover.

Its unique acid-gel cream formula gives incredible shine and

conditioning, giving clients that cool-gloss finish to their new or

existing look. The speedy development time means it’s perfect

for between permanent colour services – and with four new

shades to choose from, they’re even more spoilt for choice.

10.02 is perfect for creating

a soft cool blonde as the

iridescent ash removes

unwanted yellow tones.

10.01 is ideal for creating

a slightly cooler blonde;

the .01 will remove any pale

yellow and leave a very light,

clean, cool blonde with a

natural finish.

8.21 is the one to reach for

when you have lifted hair and

see a yellow undercoat.

The .21 is a fine balance of

ash that will leave a cool

biscuit-y tone.

7.01 can be used on hair that

has been lifted up to a yelloworange.

It removes the warmth

and creates a cool finish

that will look like a lighter,

natural base.

FAIL TO PREPARE, PREPARE TO FAIL

Now is not the time to faff around. “To boost revenue, consultations

are more key than ever before,” says Tracy Hayes, global brand

ambassador for Fudge Professional. “They are not just a

conversation to establish what the client wants, but they are an

opportunity to collaborate on a look that is an amplification of

something bigger than either of you would come up with alone.”

She continues: “Listen and be present and responsive, look

for opportunities to take the look on a journey, and don’t close

the conversation.”

Digital consultations can be a great way to make sure you’re

maxing out the most of your time with clients when they’re with you.

Timely’s salon software system, for example, allows you to recall

client notes, update them on the spot and sync effortlessly across

devices. Be primed to discuss where clients could go.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

You may not realise it, but you are probably pouring money down the

drain, so take a look at the new game-changing Wella Professionals

Profit Calculator. James Earnshaw, Wella Professionals craft expert

and stylist at Hazel & Haydn, explains how this mathematical

approach breaks down your pricing effortlessly. “The calculator

figures out exactly how much the colour I’m using costs, how long

regrowth will last and tells me how much I need to make for a realistic

profit so I can definitively know how much to charge.”

Vish’s colour management system is another efficient way to

monitor your colour usage. It allows you to measure and record

exact colour product ratio calculations (which can be stored and

recalled for each client), and the Vish Front Desk service breaks

down salon pricing structures into parts of product cost and service

cost, allowing you to create a fair and profitable pricing strategy.

Innovation has meant

lighteners are now faster,

more effective and – most

importantly – regularly

combined with bonder

technology in one easy

step. “With Redken’s Flash

is no need to do a second

Martin, master stylist at

Gro London. Whether it’s

a twist on a classic, such

as Redken’s Flash Lift, L’Oréal Professionnel Blond Studio 8 Bonder

Inside, or the new BlondorPlex from Wella Professionals, you’re able

to cleanly lift while saving time and helping protect hair structure.

THE WORKS

Talk to your customers about

their image. Now is the time

for change, Clayde Baumann,

global colour director at

D&J Ambrose, asserts:

“Large regrowth is a great

opportunity to do a colour

change with minimal stress

and damage to the hair.”

Nella Pastore, a freelance

stylist and Wella Passionista,

has discovered reducing the

number of appointments has resulted in a financial boost. It’s back

to the drawing board for each client, with the time allowed to create

something bespoke that feels worth it. “It’s about exciting the client

and breaking away from the usual ‘full head of highlights?’” she says.

COOL OFF

Cool shades remain the biggest hair trend in fashion for A/W20, with the likes of L’Oréal

Professionnel Majirel Cool Inforced shades, new Wella Professionals Koleston Perfect ME+ Pure

Naturals additions, and cooler updates to Goldwell’s Elumenation range.

But as we all know, you simply can’t maintain a fashion-forward ashy tone at home without

help. It’s so important to look at the way you’re booking in clients, and creating a revised service

structure. JC Aucamp, colour director at Guy Kremer, agrees: “The trick is to work smarter, not

harder, by giving your client a new service that ensures they are back in your chair in four to six

weeks’ time. Not just low-maintenance colour that will bring them back in several months’ time.”

By making a bespoke appointment routine for clients, you’re still impressing them with

your expertise, says Mark Creed, director of the Idlewild salon group in Oxfordshire. “In-salon

techniques and applications are cleverly combined to give clients freedom with root-free

solutions, that can be refreshed with lucrative colour glosses in-between visits,” he explains.

Wella Professionals Luxelights

I’LL HAVE WHAT SHE’S HAVING…

If you’re not giving clients all the time in the world for a truly bespoke

experience, then you need to simplify and streamline your service

offering so that both you and the client know what to expect, and

how much it’s going to cost. Enter the menu…

Adam Reed London has introduced a new Cool Down menu for

clients to easily tap into those trending cool shades, and achieve

a fashion-forward look even if they don’t know how to voice what

they’re after. L’Oréal Professionnel is also launching a clever Top-up

and Tone service menu across its salons, a tiered offering to help

encourage clients back through the door.

Wella Professionals’ new Luxelights service, developed through

research into the desires of the everyday colour client. “If we’re

offering the same thing day in, day out, then we get bored – and so

do our clients,” says Christopher Rea, global design manager for

colour and trends at Wella Professionals. It’s a quick and effective

three-step service, so you know exactly how long it will take and how

to charge accordingly. Also look closely at multi-tasking for greater

impact. Smoothing legend Keratin Complex has just unveiled colour

lines, with its clever keratin formula built-in to deliver a colour that

dials up that healthy shine.

It’s not just colour services to consider – from Olaplex to K-Water

from Kérastase, make sure that super-quick treatments which give a

serious boost to hair condition are clearly marketed. “Remind clients

the benefits of treatments,” advises Mark Creed. “Offer a simplified

express menu to ensure time-nervous clients can still enjoy the

finish they love.”

evo fab pro

PICK ’N’ MIX

Handpicked homecare is essential, otherwise what is to stop clients

from stocking up at the supermarket? “We can do the best colour

the client has ever had, but if we let them leave the salon without

advising the correct homecare product and let them buy something

inferior elsewhere, this will potentially undo all the hard work,” says

KH Hair’s Darren Messias.

“To ensure turnover doesn’t suffer long-term, I love the evo fab

pro system, which allows us to mix custom-coloured take-home

conditioners,” says Tom Smith, creative director at Billi Currie Forty

Seven Chiltern Street. “The new lease of life you have given your client

by transforming her relationship with her hair will excite her – this

means telling her friends and co-workers; meaning lots of potential

new clients! Focus on the long-term gains, not just the bill on the day.”

IT’S A DEAL

A simple tip – keep an eye on wholesaler deals. Tiff J, owner and

creative director at 3Thirty Salon, suggests you “take advantage

when stockists are doing promotions and bulk-buy if feasible”.

If you’re complacent and leave stock intake until you’re running

on fumes, you’re left paying whatever is necessary to secure

that product. Have a fund for great deals which will save you big

bucks in the long run.

“I also create moodboards of current colour trends, and have

them displayed on work stations,” adds Tiff, which can be a

great way to entice clients to try shades which need using up or

can prompt an additional service.

Whether clients are getting playful with tones or embracing a new version of natural,

Great Lengths’ new limited edition colours will put a bounce back in their step

THE EXTENDED

BREAK from

colouring has

had clients reexamining

what

they want. The

lockdown found

some falling back

in love with their

natural colour,

while some

wanted to jazz

things up more

now they didn’t

have to go to

the office. But making a leap into unknown territory

can still be scary – which is where the huge range of

shades from Great Lengths comes into play.

With 100 per cent ethically-sourced human hair

across more than 85 shades, there is so much

choice for clients looking to try something new. From

natural base shades, brilliant blondes, root stretches

and fashion colours, they’re all there, available as

both keratin bonds and GL Tapes. The addition of

three new limited edition shades, designed to offer

a twist on natural hues, are sure to be another huge

success. We asked Louise Jenkins, education and

creative manager for Great Lengths UK and Ireland,

to talk us through them…

PEACH BLONDE

“Great Lengths is known for

having a wide range of blonde

shades to suit all depths and

tones, and the launch of our

new Peach Blonde delivers the

next in the series of blonde

trends. Predominantly blonde,

but with a soft peachy glow

when the light hits, this shade

is perfect for adding a different

dimension and intrigue to hair,

while still ensuring that it’s

flexible to last the test of time.

“The intensity and upkeep

for icy, ashy blondes proved

difficult over lockdown without

salon maintenance. Opting for

softer, warmer tones can help

clients keep their hair in great

shape with lower maintenance

during uncertain times, while

still giving an edge on a

standard blonde shades.”

Fitting is just one half of the extensions equation. Homecare is crucial, and the easier you can make your

clients’ care, the more likely they will keep returning for more. It’s as easy as one, two, three

Great Lengths has three new high-performance

bristle brushes that you can send your client

home with, specifically designed for brushing

through hair extensions. Hair is left tanglefree,

easy to manage and with a sleek, shiny

finish. Choose from the Small Dressing Brush,

Medium Oval Brush and Large Paddle Brush.

Keep blondes looking their best with the new

Silver Shine Gift Set, which has everything

you need to restore blondes to their former

brilliance. It contains the new Great Lengths

Silver Shine Shampoo, 60 Second Conditioner

and the High Performance Mask, making it

simple to care for hair and indulge your client.

Protecting hair against heat is paramount.

The new Heat & Care Spray from Great Lengths

is suitable for all hair types – particularly curly

or textured hair – to keep things in tip-top

condition. A protective film of hard-working,

hydrating ingredients gets to work, defending

hair from everyday styling.

STRAWBERRY

BLONDE

“The perfect new natural

for auburns! Filling that

gap between deep auburn

brunettes and light copper

blondes, this shade is soughtafter

from summer to autumn,

and suits almost all skin tones

as its depth sits right in the

middle of the colour spectrum.

Regardless of whether you

are naturally darker or lighter,

this shade allows for multitonal

finishes.

“Mid shades will be

an ongoing trend.

They allow clients to

change their colour,

while ensuring that

the contrast between

natural and artificial is

enough to be different.”

BROWN

ROSE

“Brown Rose offers

clients the ability to be

something other than

chocolate brown. As we can

see that the low-maintenance

hair trend is going to continue

for some time, we need to

consider how we can change

it up for our brunette clients

to give them variety, without

creating more upkeep.

“The soft balayage of

rich brown to rose brown

in this limited edition

colour offers clients

the chance to

add warmth and

dimension to their

hair without having

to consider regrowth

maintenance.”

Stay ahead of colour trends with the new limited edition shades from Great Lengths.

OPINION

RETHINK,

DON’T REPEAT

ROBERT EATON FROM RUSSELL EATON SALONS AND WELLA’S

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR FOR THE UK AND IRELAND, KNEW HE WOULD NEED

TO MAKE CHANGES POST-LOCKDOWN. HERE HE SHARES HIS APPROACH

LOOK AGAIN AT CONSULTATIONS

Nothing quite replaces face-to-face meetings, understanding

client needs and aspirations with their hair. However, virtual

consultations have proved very popular with some clients. It helps

us manage the amount of people in the salon at one time and

allows us to make an introduction and start a conversation about

what we can offer, share moodboards and ideas on a screen via

Zoom. We can also establish exactly how long we need to book

out and the cost of that appointment before finally inviting them in

for a patch test and to confirm everything we have discussed. We

have found that our columns run more smoothly and efficiently.

ADJUST YOUR TIMES

We have really looked at how we charge for our time and what we

do within our appointments. Our team has needed much more time

to be able to achieve the colour results our clients have wanted

since lockdown, with longer roots and more advanced colour work.

Having the confidence to charge correctly can be a difficult thing.

Our colour services have become much more advanced over

recent years, with multiple services being used on one client, so

quoting for the work we do has never been so important.

KEEP EDUCATING

We have just experienced weeks of intense amounts of work,

a substantial amount of which is colour correction. To manage

this we’ve had a big focus on education – teaching our team new

techniques and providing them with all of Wella Professionals’

latest product innovations. It’s been fantastic for our younger team

members; they have experienced more real-life colour correction

education than any course they could have attended!

EMBRACE NEW SALON TRENDS

One of the trends we have noticed since our return is a change

in clients’ habits and the type of colour services they now want.

There has been a big move towards grey blending rather than grey

coverage. This has opened up a huge amount of new services and

techniques such as new glossing services, colour placement that

is mindful of longevity and a much softer regrowth line. With such a

massive change in everyone’s life and work patterns it’s having an

impact on how we are engaging with clients but also how often we

see them and in turn the kind of colour we now create.
