Lessons from the past
At the beginning and end of every school year, our Principal,
Father Lawrence McCall (1964-1990), would say in his own
way, “God smiles down on Pius XI High School; it’s good
people like you who give it everything you’ve got who make
Pius XI successful.” And so, as another year would end, a
new year began.
Endings mean new beginnings:
the successes of the capital campaign led to the
construction of the Wendy Joy Lindsey Theater and
Father Robert V. Carney Performing Arts Center!
the return of the Commencement Ceremony to the
Pius XI Field House where our 27,000th graduate,
Matthew Alan Grams, crossed the stage!
the inauguration of our international program and global
partnership with Wisconsin International Academy!
attaining over one million dollars in annual fund goals so
more Pius XI families can receive scholarships designated
for high-achieving deserving students!
over $12 million in college scholarships and over 220
UW-Madison Advanced Placement credit hours earned by
2012 graduates, of whom 25% achieved a 30 or above on
the ACT!
The extraordinary blessings given to Pius XI High School
through your generosity and ongoing investment are
transformative. We give thanks for your leadership behind
and on-the-scene, coast-to-coast, from the early years
under Father de Maria to last year, under Chairman Norm
Balthasar. The strength of great leadership is the capacity to
aim high coupled with an expectation for excellence.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Brian Henke
Pius XI High School has been blessed throughout its eight
decades with passionate and dedicated leadership that began
with the Pallottines and the School Sisters of St. Francis and
endures today through strong community leadership. Last
year, in this publication, we dedicated a special goodbye to
our Chairman of the Pius XI Board of Directors, Norm
Balthasar, who died while serving last October. Following in
his footsteps – not only in service to his achievements but
also in service to the educational community – has been
humbling this past year. My sincere thanks to you for
supporting the Pius XI Community during the transition
from our past to the present and for lighting the way toward
our future.
It is an exciting time for Pius XI High School. The school is
well positioned for strategic planning this year. In
preparation, the school community grounded itself with a
new mission that stresses the critical need for our students
to lead lives illuminated by the Gospel teachings while
preparing for college in a school committed to a
curriculum that embraces the arts as academics. This
foundational work included the construction and
completion of the Father Robert V. Carney Performing Arts
Center. We hope to see you in November at the premiere
of Miss Saigon in the Wendy Joy Lindsey Theater. Special
thanks to Vice Chair, Doug Craft, who led the project in
partnership with Uihlein Wilson Architects and Gilbane
Construction.
Most importantly, your partnership in the capital campaign,
as well as the annual fund, strengthened the school in ways
that empowered sustainable gains.
The Pius XI High School of the future needs to be a
balance between today’s realities and preparing students
for tomorrow’s world. Last year, the international program
became formalized with the installation of a partnership with
students from China, Spain, Brazil and South Korea – 33 in
all – who joined us this fall as Pius XI students.
Our entire student body will be involved in broadening a
shared understanding of an increasingly diverse world, which
will shape future life opportunities.
There is important work ahead as we plan for the future.
We appreciate and need your continued support. Your pride
in Pius XI High School and its ongoing successes is
demonstrated through your giving, participation, and
stewardship of others in the name of Pius XI High School.
As a proud parent of two Pius XI graduates, I appreciate the

HIGHLIGHTS
Every year, Pius XI students make us proud in the classroom, in the athletic arena, in the art studio, on the stage and in
the community. The year 20XI-2012 was no different. It was a year of changes. As we fi nish up our year in the Classic 8
Conference and at the Pabst Theater, our students made Pius XI High School better each and every day. Here are just a few
of the highlights accomplished this year:
Academics
Overall, the class of 2012 earned more than $12.5 million in college scholarship offers and our seniors earned 220 Credits
at the University of Wisconsin through Advanced Placement courses.
Athletics
Both the girls and boys basketball teams fi nished the season at the top
of the Classic 8 Conference; the Lady Popes for the third year in a row.
The boys basketball team made their fi rst trip to state in seven years.
Three players were recognized for scoring more than 1,000 points in
their high school careers.
Pius XI athletes took home two fi rst place medals and one third place
medal at the State Track Meet.
Nineteen student athletes made college commitments and received
scholarships.
Visual Arts
Year after year, our Visual Arts students sweep local and regional Scholastic Gold Key and Silver Key awards. This year, two
students won National Gold Key awards and three students won National Silver Key awards.
Seven student artists were selected to have their pieces on display for the Discovery World Fibers and Fashion Design
exhibit.
One art student earned his own show at the Milwaukee Art Museum – the fi rst time the Art Museum has given a student
artist a solo show. In addition, another artist was recognized with a piece on display at Discovery World.
Performing Arts
Twenty-three perfect scores and seven special commendations were
awarded to Pius XI High School students who competed at the
Wisconsin School Music Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival.
The special commendations were awarded by the judges for
the best performances at the festival.
Living the Gospel
Our Juniors and Seniors embraced the newly established Kairos retreat
program – the pinnacle of their high school retreat experience with
more than 80 students participating. And in the spirit of St. Francis,
our students reached out to the poor through more than a
dozen organizations.
A look to the future
In the spring of 2012, Pius XI formed a partnership with CERNET and formed the Wisconsin International Academy (WIA).
In the future, students from China will come to Pius XI to study and earn a four-year high school diploma. Pius XI hopes to
encourage an exchange program to promote our global initiative.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Laurie Ellis
Laurie Ellis is a relative newcomer to Pius XI High School, but
she has made a signifi cant impact in our school community, and
in the lives of our students.
Laurie started here at Pius XI in the fall of 2007 as a teacher in
the mathematics department. She was recognized recently as
an Outstanding Mathematics Teacher by Milwaukee School of
Engineering and the Mathematics Association of America.
Laurie is proud that 65% of her
students are at a 5 on AP
testing, while the national
average is 25%. While she still
teaches math, Advanced
Placement Calculus, Laurie has
also been tapped to teach in
Pius XI’s Project Lead the Way
pre-engineering program.
She gladly accepted, and took
classes over two summers to
become credentialed to teach
Ruth Regent-Smith
Ruth Regent-Smith has been serving the Pius XI community
for 33 years, but the Herb Kohl Fellow and psychology teacher
shared that she didn’t always know she wanted to work in
education. After graduating from St. Norbert College she took
her MCAT with intentions to go on to medical school, but
decided to take a year off. That year changed her life and now
over three decades later she is teaching senior level
psychology courses at Pius XI High School.
Most high schools do not offer Advanced Placement
Psychology courses that allow students to receive college
credit, but Ruth feels blessed to be teaching these elective
courses. “I love interacting with students and watching their
excitement as they learn and explore the world of
psychology.” Pius XI’s extensive course offerings allow
teachers like Ruth to teach electives that are focused towards
college level coursework.
Students experience real life applications in all of Ruth’s classes.
“I always have a “hook” at the beginning of each class. It is a fun
way to engage the students and give a practical application of a
theory that we are studying.”
“Students and teachers are real partners in the learning process”
Introduction to Engineering and Design, as well as Civil
Engineering and Architecture. When Pius XI decided to
implement AVID (Advancement Via Individual
Determination), a nationally-recognized research-based
approach to help students fully tap their potential, Laurie
joined the team, which meant two more summers of intensive
training. She now coordinates the AVID elective course.
Laurie also appreciates being able to share her faith where she
teaches. “I like being able to stop before I pass out an exam
and offer a prayer that everyone does their best,” she says.
Like all exceptional teachers, Laurie knows her real impact
reaches beyond the content knowledge gained by her students.
“At the end of the day, I am teaching them more than math
or engineering. My goal is to help them ‘do school’ in a way
that teaches them about themselves, so that they can take
their accomplishments and what they have learned through
the challenges they’ve met with them to college and into
their lives.”

Ruth hopes to use her
Herb Kohl Fellowship
award to bring additional technology into her classroom. She
loves to make education exciting and gets a kick out of being
known for her purple themed classroom! One of her favorite
things about being a teacher is seeing past students and
knowing that she was infl uential in their successes and
achievements at Pius XI.

“I asked my in-laws, Robert and Lois Dittus
why they never let us pay for dinner. I
got this response. When I was going out
with your mother-in-law I asked the same
question of her father Joseph Kern and his
response was ‘pass it on’. That has always
stuck with me, so when I started working
here at Pius XI it was a given that we would
contribute in the form of a scholarship for
a deserving student. We created the John
Duwell Community Service Scholarship in
memory of our neighbor who was always
doing something for someone else. It has
been a blessing to watch our John Duwell
Scholarship recipients go through Pius XI
High School and ultimately graduate.”

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
THE PAC - A PIUS XI INSPIRATION
When asked to write a couple of paragraphs about our experiences and motivations for getting involved with the
fundraising and construction of the Father Robert V. Carney Performing Arts Center, Terry and I doubted we could describe
it in less than fi ve pages. After a good deal of editing there emerged these simple truths:
We were inspired by a group of educators that had for far too long worked with inadequate facilities yet created
astonishing results.
We were inspired by the giving of individuals that truly understood that to those to whom much is given, much
is expected, and in turn, were equally struck by the smallest of gifts that signaled a universal desire to see this
project completed “for the kids.”
We were inspired by the nameless faces of generations past that created the physical facilities of Pius XI and felt
compelled to accept the unspoken challenge handed down to all of us to continue this work.
We were impressed by the talent that we have witnessed in the students of Pius XI and were inspired by the way in
which they encourage and appreciate each other in the pursuit of their dreams.
We were inspired by a Board of Directors and Administrative team that would not accept that this vision could
not become a reality due to something as mundane as fi nances.
We were inspired by the vision of the architects, the pride of the tradesmen and the persistence of the
construction management team that all refused to compromise the promise of this beautiful space.
We were inspired in the fi rm belief that the Holy Spirit had moved all of these elements into place so that
Pius XI could create a space that will serve to elevate the lives of the young people that He has entrusted
to our care.
With inspiration such as this, the small part we played quickly became a joyful task. We were able to spend our Saturday
mornings watching this wonderful space take shape. For a couple that spend much of our waking moments occupied in the
intangible pursuits of business and charitable work, it was great fun to put on the hardhats and see the intangible become
tangible. We are grateful to the Pius XI community for allowing us to become so completely inspired!
