Book club
Hot reads and chilled liqueurs ...
this months book club’s looking good!
There are a few authors who have us leaping for joy when we see a new
release ... and Lisa Jewell is right at the top of that list. Gripping, engrossing,
disturbing, her books are thrillers with heart-thumping, unexpected twists
that just take your breath away. Her latest, Invisible Girl, is about a missing
girl, an invisible man, and how we often look in the wrong places for bad
people and not noticing the real predators who walk freely among us in
plain sight. Century
The pay checks are huge. The work exciting. The drinks flow. But people
sneak into the bathroom for a hit of cocaine, people sleep under desks,
and sexual harassment is rife. The Boy’s Club by Erica Katz is set in a
corporate Manhattan law firm ... a place where if you don’t turn a blind
eye, the boys’ club is a dangerous place to be. Orion
We’re not serving wine at book club this month. Instead, we’re bringing out
the Limoncello. Why? Because it’s summer and we’re happy and in an Amalfi
kind of mood. Also, a few of the books we’ve chosen are lip-puckeringly,
cheek-suckingly, squeeze-your-eyes-shut scary. So a bit of a theme going,
yes? Our favourite version is Bottega’s Limoncino ... you can find it at good
bottle stores, or order online for R325 from takealot.com
The thrills just keep on coming. Shari Lapena (The Couple Next Door, A Stranger in the House
... LOVE her books) has just released The End of Her, which is tension-filled, fast-paced,
edge-of-your-seat. A recently married and new mum of twin may be struggling with the
disorienting effects of sleep deprivation, but knows one thing is certain ... she has everything
she ever wanted. Until a woman from her husband’s past arrives and makes a horrifying
allegation about his first wife. He always claimed her death was an accident - but she says it
was murder. This one’s an all-nighter. Penguin
A missing patient is a hospital ward’s worst nightmare, and the disappearance of a newborn
baby from a maternity ward in a New York hospital creates a city-wide emergency. Then
another kidnapping, and a stabbing, take place ... rumours and accusations fly, and a midwife
teams up with a sceptical NYPD detective to solve the case. But the truth is far more twisted
than either of them could ever have imagined. The Midwife Murders by James Patterson
and Richard DiLallo is a thrill-a-minute paperback read. Arrow Books
Mark Billingham‘s Sleepyhead was released in August 2001, flew straight onto the top ten
bestseller list, and was the biggest selling debut novel of the year. Cry Baby - the 17th book
in the Tom Thorne series - is its prequel. It’s set way back in 1996, when Thorne a young
detective, haunted by the moment when he ignored his instincts, and how that led to a
horrific crime. Now on his first case - that of a young boy who’s gone missing while playing
in the woods- and Detective Sergeant Tom Thorne is not going to let anything get in the
way of him solving the crime. Another great read from another favourite author. Little, Brown
Time for a little light relief
Meeting Shevon I couldn’t help but
think how much she reminded me
of a sensuous Portuguese beauty.
Soulful green-brown eyes, long
eyelashes and gorgeous dark locks,
she is without a doubt strikingly
beautiful. Her bright smile and
contagious laugh are evidence of
how she genuinely loves life. Her easygoing
and bubbly personality makes
you feel as though you’ve known her
for years.
Beyond her great sense of humour
and the quirky jokes, Shevon is
a junior business developer for
a construction and electrical
engineering company responsible
for their branding and procedural
processes. And, she is also a parttime
model, co-owner of a small
eco-friendly business called
Route Products (selling bamboo
toothbrushes and 100 per cent cotton
bags), and an ambassador for The
Umbrella Foundation.
The latter was founded during Level 5
of the nationwide lockdown.
‘The pandemic has torn millions
of South Africans away from their
livelihoods, and putting food on
the table has become an everyday
struggle. I simply could not sit and
do nothing knowing that a lot of
people are taking huge strain. During
a conversation with my mother,
she told me about a friend, Annette
Smyth whom I should reach out
to. Chatting to Annette it was clear
she had a burning desire to start
something right away to help those
in need.
‘Annette told me that
she envisioned an umbrella
because it symbolises
protection, and that she
aimed to protect everyone
in SA who needed help,
regardless of the ‘season’.
‘The Umbrella Foundation
was born, starting with just
four people. Soon after more
people got involved. Linked with
BackaBuddy they literally assist
with anything you can think of
– from donating meals, blankets,
clothes, food, books, toiletries,
masks, WiFi to educational
resources (and the
list continues!).’
Charged with creative fire and
a philosophical outlook, Shevon
is always looking for the next
adventure. She entered Miss South
Africa, and when she only made it
to the top 35, she took the news in
her stride.
‘Yes, at first I was gutted … Inclined
to overthink every situation, I just
reminded myself that everything
works out the way it should as it is in
God’s hands. Experiencing failure may
be harsh, but it also offers a unique
opportunity to step back and move
on for success.
‘This experience also made me learn
a lot about myself. Be brave and take
risks in life. Apply for that dream job,
pursue that passion, say yes to that
opportunity that scares you, and be
unapologetically you. Challenging
yourself is creating yourself.’
What you might not know about
Shevon is that she’s been dancing
since the age of three! Now it all
makes sense why she walks so
gracefully with poise and confidence.
‘I did ballet and modern dancing
for many years. For a few months, I
even did hip hop with the dream of
starring in a Step Up movie (hey, a girl
can dream!). But later on, I pursued
contemporary and then Latin
American at university. My goal is to
continue with Latin American and to
dance competitively.
‘Dancing played a big part in who I
am today – it taught me discipline
and that hard work reaps reward.
Most of my motivation of ‘falling, and
getting back up’ has come from my
years of dancing.’
When asked about a role model she
looks up to, without even thinking
twice Shevon said she has the
utmost respect and admiration for
one of her previous mentors during
her BCom Entrepreneurship studies,
Dimakatso Malwela.
‘She is a multifaceted woman who
has cemented herself into the
empowerment of women in Africa
through entrepreneurship, tourism,
clothing and textiles, as well as
leadership. She has the heart to
serve a nation and always makes an
impact on the lives of those around
her. Dimakatso has inspired me to
become an advocate for change.
‘If there is one thing I wish I could
change it would be to alleviate
poverty. As an aspiring entrepreneur,
I believe in the power to change
not only the demographics in
South Africa but the mindsets of
South Africans to produce more
Proudly South African products and
businesses, and by being job creators
and not job seekers.’
There are many layers to Shevon,
but one thing remains – she’s got a
healthy dose of positivity and is eager
to spread it wherever she goes.
‘I want to encourage you today that
whatever life has been throwing at
you, get out the jug and start making
that lemonade!’
Short and sweet:
• All things in moderation except her grandmother’s homemade milk tart • She
wishes that she could sing or play an instrument • The book she will read again
is 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey • She doesn’t like it when
certain foods touch on her plate • Her favourite TV show is So You Think You Can
Dance • She cannot stand spiders • If she could have one superpower it would
be to speak and understand any language
WATER IS THEIR
WORLD
Not all superheroes wear a cape, some wear pink hard hats and
gumboots instead. We chat to the women from Jam Water Services
about their aim to provide water to one rural community at a time.
You open the tap and without thinking twice, you have
running water … However, so many communities simply do
not have access to this basic human right. And that’s where
Jam Water Services (JWS) comes in. They are a commercial
non-profit organisation specialising in drilling boreholes
and providing pump installations solutions to ensure safe
drinking water for communities.
Located on the outskirts of Roodepoort, a passionate team
of skilled women has been helping to provide water to
rural communities in this and other countries. The ‘Pink
Ladies’ are involved in the full project process, from start to
finish. Not only do they run the office admin, but they go
out to these communities, put all the marketing in place,
12 Get It Magazine October 2020
work with potential donors, work with the drilling teams,
go to the communities for a celebration launch and follow
each project through heart and soul. In short, they are the
‘mothers’ of every project.
‘One in 10 people worldwide lives without clean water and
has to make use of contaminated water for survival,’ says the
‘Pink Ladies spokeswoman’, Lerina Liebenberg of JWS.
‘Many deaths under the age of five are caused by diarrhoeal
diseases. Sadly, without clean water there can be no
development or survival. Access to safe and healthy water is
a basic human right and our biggest mission. Therefore, the
aim of our water and sanitation programmes is to improve
the health and hygiene of communities all across Africa.’
The ‘Pink Ladies’ from Jam Water Services – Janette
Chambers, Ronette Chambers, Esther Rakoena, Annette
Carrick, Lerina Liebenberg and Gill McNamara.
JWS establishes approximately 180 boreholes annually in
communities that lack access to clean water across Africa.
Up to date, it will be more than 3 000 boreholes.
Don’t be mistaken for one moment – this is not a quick,
get-it-done-in-an-hour slapdash job. This specialised team
is thorough down to the tee. They offer a complete water
solution including geophysical surveys, borehole drilling,
borehole testing, water pump installations, manual and
solar pump installations, booster pump systems, water tank
installations and domestic water filtration systems. Quite
a mouthful, but super impressive. Before they decide on
drilling a borehole, they send out a team to do a survey of
the area. Once they indicate where the water is and
where to drill, JWS gears up the teams (and the drilling rigs)
and goes to the rural community.
‘We are not just another drilling company. We deliver a
quality drilling service using top-quality drilling methods.
Most of these rural areas do not have the luxury of
electricity and there we install a hand pump for the whole
community to use. One innovative idea we used for a
school was the buddy bay. Water filters are secured in a
cement ‘bay’ with a couple of secured taps for the school
kids and the community to use. We loved this buddy bay so
much that we installed one outside our office premises in
Nooitgedacht for our local community to use.’
While they’ve installed so many water solutions, you might
think that they have become used to the overwhelming
joy when a community finally gets water.
‘Each community touches your soul differently, with a
different story. It is the most rewarding feeling to ‘hear’
the sounds of joy when the first floods of water come
out of the earth. Something so simple for most of us is
so precious to many others. No more walking endless
kilometres for a bucket of muddy contaminated water, no
more struggling. It is a feeling you could never get used to
and it keeps you awake to the world and its realities.
‘Their grateful smiles and waves are the warmest greetings
of the day. There was one case last year where the whole
company went to assist in drilling a borehole for Kulungile
Kids in KZN, a children’s home run by South Africa’s Mother
Teresa. Founded by Sister Abegail Ntleko, she provides a
loving home for about 20 children of all ages. A few years
ago she was given the Unsung Hero Award by the Dalai
Lama. They had severe water problems, so bad that
she had immense difficulty running the home. We spent
quite some time with her and the children … what a
remarkable woman and a magical space she steers. To
be able to assist them with running water, and then
their utmost gratefulness will forever be a memorable
experience for all of us.
But this is not where JWS’ services end. Besides providing
sustainable water solutions, communities are also
given comprehensive water and sanitation education
and training.
‘WASH, which translates to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
collectively, are activities that cannot exist independently.
Without water, proper sanitation and hygiene are not
possible, and if proper hygiene is not in place, water
becomes contaminated. So, education is vital. Clean
water saves lives.
About JWS’ future plans, the Pink Ladies said it is their
dream to be recognised by local society for the work
they do.
‘We would love to get all South Africans involved in giving
life. We have been around for many, many years,
but we can only dream of getting bigger and doing more
with the help of local companies.’
It was Benjamin Franklin who famously said: ‘When the
well’s dry, we know the worth of water’. We truly have no
idea how blessed we are.
How to eat less by
eating more protein
There are lots of reasons to eat protein at
breakfast. Protein helps keep you full and
satisfied until lunch. And a new study suggests
it might even help curb snacking at night.
If you keep up with the latest in dietary advice, you
can probably list a few reasons why protein is such
an important nutrient. It’s necessary, of course, to
help you build and maintain your muscle mass. And
it’s also known to be a much better at filling you
up than either fat or carbohydrate. That’s why we
suggest that people aim to have a good source of
protein at each meal or snack. The idea is simply this
high-carb meals don’t stay with you, while higher
protein meals can help control hunger from one
meal to the next. But here’s something else. A recent
study suggests that a high protein breakfast not
only helps control your appetite until the next meal,
it might reduce unhealthy snacking in the evening.
How protein measures up
Adolescents are notorious breakfast-skippers, and that’s
associated with weight gain. Researchers at the University
of Missouri studied the effects of different breakfast meals
in 20 overweight teenage girls—who typically ate breakfast
no more than twice a week. The girls were asked to do the
following ... one week, they skipped breakfast each day,
one week they had a high-protein breakfast every day (35
grams), and one week they had a lower protein breakfast
every day (13 grams). What the researchers wanted to know
was how the different meals affected their appetite, hunger
levels between meals, food cravings and evening snacking.
To measure all these things, the girls completed
questionnaires about their level of hunger and satisfaction
during the day, and they had brain scans just before dinner.
The scans allowed the researchers to see how certain
areas of the brain responded - in particular, those that are
involved in food cravings - when the girls were shown
pictures of appealing foods. Then the girls went home with
advertorial
a cooler full of goodies, a huge assortment of salty snacks,
candy, ice cream, fruit, pizza, macaroni and cheese. And they
were told they could eat as much as they wanted during
the evening.
When all was said and done, the high-protein breakfast
had several advantages over the low-protein one (and
certainly over no breakfast at all). For one thing, the girls
said the high-protein breakfast was more filling - no surprise
there. But during the week that they ate the high-protein
breakfast, their brain activity was different. There was
less activity in the areas of the brain responsible for food
cravings, and the girls ate less high-fat, high-sugar foods
after dinner. This is an interesting twist on the whole story. It
suggests that a high-protein breakfast not only helps keep
you full until lunch but may even help curb your intake over
the course of the day. Getting in 35 grams of protein at one
time, as they did in the study, might be a bit of a challenge.
But you can get close—25 grams is actually fairly easy to do.
Up your breakfast protein
Here are some meals to try, all of which will give you about 25 grams of protein.
• A protein shake with non-fat milk. A portion of milk provides about 10 grams of protein, and you can adjust the
protein powder in your shake to boost it up • A portion of plain non-fat cottage cheese with fruit and a handful of
almonds • An omelette made with two whole eggs or four egg whites, filled with veggies and an ounce of low-fat
mozzarella cheese • Rolled oats cooked in non-fat milk with protein powder and a dab of almond butter added
after cooking. • 100% whole grain toast, topped with non-fat cream cheese and 85 grams smoked salmon.
Visit myherbalifebreakfast.co.za for more ideas on how to make breakfast a breeze.
Of course, this is only one recent study, and its conclusions are not yet the state of the science on this topic. But
there is good support in the scientific literature for the general proposition that protein intake under the right
circumstances produce feelings of satiety.

Hello Summer. Hello radiance!
Here are two brand-new-on-the-beauty-shelves products that are soon going to be
From mask-related skin
irritations to nappy rash ...
Along with your sanitiser spray, keep
these two Eau Thermale Avéne
essentials in your bag. We’re already fans
of the Thermal Spring Water, which
is excellent for sensitive, intolerant
and allergic skin. It soothes, softens,
and restores skin’s natural balance,
and promotes skin healing. It’s used
to combat facial redness, to calm skin
irritation due to sunburn, razer burn
or after a facial or surgery, to calm
and soothe nappy rash, or simply to
cool yourself down while travelling or
playing sport. Now we’ve discovered
the new Eau Thermale Avéne
Cicalfate+ restorative and protective
cream. Use after the spring water for
immediately soothing. And it’s great
for everything from mask-related skin
irritations, superficial cuts and burns,
localized dryness, after treatments laser
and chemical peel. It’s safe for everyone,
from babe to adult, and can be used on
body, face and lips. You’ll find both on
eau-thermale-avene.co.za, the spring
water ranges from R85 for a small
handbag spray to R229 for a familyfriendly
size; Cicalfate costs R209.
Beets. Carrots. Barley. Take your beauty cue from nature
We’re fanatical about wearing our masks (and hope you are too). But what we’re
not fans of are the breakouts they cause, particularly for those who’re already
suffering from oily, problematic skin. The Placecol Cleansing Chlorophyll Facial
is rich in chlorophyll derived from young Barley plants, which helps to
detoxify the skin and decrease surface shine, while also reducing congestion
and inflammation. Combined with High Frequency Treatment, this facial
destroys the bacteria responsible for breakouts and combats congestion. With
powerful anti-oxidants to increase the skin’s immunity and help reduce free
radical damage, the result is visibly refreshed, clearer skin. If you just feel your
skin is a little tired (aren’t we all?), there’s a Oxygenating Vitamin A Facial -
highly effective for revitalising and boosting tired skin. Naturally rich in Vitamin
A (hello carrots), it tightens and firms the skin, stimulating micro-circulation
which increases oxygen and nutrients to the cells. This facial is rich in powerful
anti-oxidants to help protect the skin from harmful free radical damage, a major
cause of ageing. Then there’s the Betanin Hydration Facial ... an intensely
cooling and hydrating facial which contains Betanin, a potent anti-oxidant that
protects cells from free radical damage and gives beetroot its deep red colour.
Rich in Vitamin C to boost immunity and stimulate cell function, plus
generous quantities of essential skin health minerals, such as iron and folate, and
with beetroot’s deeply detoxifying properties, this facial leaves the skin feeling
refreshed, renewed and energised. These facials cost from R475 to R525.
Mint & Ginger Lemonade
Easy to make and really refreshing on a
hot summery day, this drink is great for
parties, too. Just scale up the quantities
and, for those who like an extra hit, try
it with a splash of white rum.
(Makes: 6 glasses. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook:
5 minutes. Chill: 2–3 hours)
You’ll need:
150g granulated sugar; 150ml water;
70g piece fresh root ginger, scrubbed
and sliced (there’s no need to peel
first); juice of 8 lemons
To serve:
Chilled water and ice cubes; 6 fresh
mint sprigs; wafer-thin strips of fresh
root ginger, cut with a vegetable
peeler (optional)
Compiled by: KYM ARGO
To make:
Put the sugar, water and ginger into
a small saucepan and heat over a
low heat, stirring until the sugar has
dissolved. Bring to the boil, then take
off the heat, cover with a lid or plate
and leave to cool at room temperature
for two to three hours for the flavours
to develop. Strain the lemon juice into
a large measuring jug – you should
have just over 400ml. Strain in the
ginger syrup and stir to mix, then top
up to 1.7 litres with chilled water and
ice cubes. Stir together, then pour into
6 glasses and add a mint sprig and
strip of ginger, if using, to each.
Garlic & Lemon Sauce
This is a mixture that adds a different
dimension to any hummus dish. We
don’t put garlic in our hummus but we
love drizzling this sauce over the top
– the acid from the lemons together
with the bitterness of the garlic and
spiced saltiness of the pickled chillies
make it irresistible.
(Serves 4. Makes 150ml . Prep: 5 minutes.
Stand: 30 minutes)
You’ll need:
Juice of 3 lemons; 3 garlic cloves,
very finely chopped; 2 pickled chilli
peppers, drained and finely chopped;
sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
To serve:
Hummus and warm pita breads
To make:
Put all the ingredients into a bowl
and using a fork, stir together to mix.
Alternatively, put in a jam jar, screw on
the lid and shake well.
Leave to stand for 30 minutes or so for
the flavours to develop, then strain.
Drizzle over plates of hummus and
serve with warm pita breads.
From Hummus to Halva ... hello spring food
Winter’s been great ... all heavy stews and lovely warm
puds with custard or cream. But we have to admit, we love
it when the weather turns a little warmer, and spring is a
fabulous season ... all new beginnings and light food and
dining al fresco. Hummus to Halva is the most wonderful
cookbook. Crammed with recipes from a Levantine kitchen,
it’s been compiled by Ronen Givon – born and raised on a
kibbutz in Israel and, he confesses, obsessed with hummus,
and Christian Mouysset – who didn’t taste hummus until he
went to uni ... then he ate it with anything and everything
he could. The book is just a fantastic celebration of food to
share. There’s hummus every which way (with mushrooms
or slow cooked chunky beef (Christian’s favourite dish in
the book), with lamb and pine nuts or Moroccan meatballs.
There are lovely salads – tabbouleh and fattoush, and breads
and dips and gorgeous labaneh – sour yoghurt cheese. The
halva cookies, cardamom coffee and ouzo and grapefruit
slush round off a delicious book. Food to make, to share, to
celebrate. Published by Pavilion.

Fresh Lemon Zest hand wash and
lotion set, R159 from Woolworths.
Two of the easiest, zestiest lemon recipes ever for you to
whip up this weekend.
Let’s start with breakfast. Some lemon curd, to stir into
your yoghurt. Or spread on a scone. Or eat from the jar.
Simply take half a cup each of lemon juice and white
sugar and 60g of salted butter, heat in a pot until sugar
has dissolved and the mixture is almost boiling and
set aside. Whisk three extra-large eggs really well
until lovely and frothy, and then pour into the
cooled but still warm mixture, whisking frantically.
Return to the stove - keep the heat low - and
keep whisking until it thickens (which it does
all of a sudden, so don’t ignore it for a second).
Leave to cool in the pot, and then store in a
glass jar in the fridge. This recipe doubles up
perfectly, so make for a friend, too.
Moving onto cocktail hour ... Limoncello
is one of our favourite summer drinks, and
it’s so easy to make. Start by taking the peel
off nine or ten large lemons with a veggie
peeler, making sure you don’t get any white
pith. Discard the lemon juice (you can keep
this to use for your lemon curd). Put the lemon
peel strips into a 750ml bottle of vodka, replace
the lid and leave for at least four days at room temperature. Once
it’s nice and infused, make a syrup with three cups of water and
two cups of sugar. All you do is place the sugar and water in a
saucepan and heat up over medium heat until the sugar has
dissolved and the liquid thickens slightly - about 10 minutes. Cool
completely, then pour into a jug or large bottle with the vodka
mixture. Cover it, and leave for 12 hours or overnight. Strain,
discard the peels and pour into bottles and chill, preferably in the
freezer, before serving. It will keep in the fridge for a month or so.
Woo bees with a
pink rose bush
Did you know that pink (as well as
white, and yellow single and semidouble)
roses are magnets for bees?
With their exposed stamens and pistils,
the pollen is always fresh, and the bees
love it. Because roses have such a long
flowering season, there are always
flowers, and pollen, for the
bees. Bonus ... they attract
butterflies, too. Lovely!
50 shades of pink …
What’s the most popular rose colour? Pink, by
a pretty mile. And while we haven’t actually
counted, there could very well be 50 or more
shades of pink roses. There’s certainly a pink
for every mood ... soft and dreamy, playful and
happy, flamboyant and feisty.
Here are the newest pink roses:
Pink Polo is a tall, vibrant pink rose that opens
from a classically shaped bud into a sumptuous
quartered bloom, the size of a side plate! The
lightly fragrant blooms are carried on long,
straight stems, so this is a really lovely picking
rose. The bush grows to just above shoulder
height. It is a white ribbon rose, and a portion
of the sales go to CANSA Paarl.
Manuela Crabbia is a nostalgia rose with
huge blooms on strong stems that display
many shades of pink. The silvery-pink broad
outer petals are edged with carmine, and as
the rose unfolds, the centre becomes a soft
salmon pink.
Colette Stella is the epitome of a dreamy
pink rose, with a distinct rosy perfume. As the
many-petalled blooms open into an antique
cup shape, the petals become a deeper, warm
pink. The two-metre high bush flowers from
top to bottom.
Nautica offers just a whisper of pink as an
undertone to the soft lavender shades that
become a silvery sheen as the rose opens. This
is a classical hybrid-tea, with long-lasting large
blooms on a tall, neatly upright growing bush.
It provides an endless supply of blooms.
Gloria Mthunzi has exquisitely shaped,
exhibition-class hybrid tea blooms in a blend
of pink, orange, and cream. The rose is tall and
vigorous, standing out in a mixed border.
Pop along to the Spring Rose
Festival and indulge in all the floral
senses. There will be displays of
roses, tractor train rides through
the roses, rosy refreshments, and a
children’s playground among the
roses. It’s happening at Ludwig’s
Rose farm from Friday, October 2
to Sunday, October 4. Entrance is
free, and it’s well worth the drive.
Let’s be honest. It’s been a long, hard slog this year. Lockdown. Curfews.
Restrictions. But now travel’s open. We can cross borders and head off to
hotels and guest houses and lodges. And we can have a glass of wine
when we get there. Life is good. And particularly good, we have to tell
you, if the escape you’ve planned is to Saseka Tented Camp.
The jewel in the crown of the Thornybush collection of lodges,
an escape here is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. Not only because it’s
sensationally beautiful, but also because of the special end-of-lockdown
rates ... it’s one of the few times - heck, perhaps the only time - this lodge
will be South African friendly, cost wise.
So what’s so special? Designed by architects and designers Silvio Rech
and Lesley Carstens, the lodge cleverly and seamlessly combines classical
style with cutting-edge design, and takes attention to detail to a whole
new level. From the roof over the massive, tiered deck which mimics
the dappled light of a tree canopy to the botanical prints on the tents’
ceilings, which, besides being aesthetically pleasing, also educate since
they include the Latin names.
The colours used throughout the lodge delight and surprise ... although
they shouldn’t, since they reflect the hues of the surrounding bush.
Think ivory for the environmentally-friendly flooring that mimics the
colour of the sand in the river below, dark olive, sage and apple from the
Jackalberry, Apple Leaf and Leadwood trees, and occasionally touches of
pink, picked up from the flowers in the area.
The main area, with a sexy little bar and wide open deck, overlooks the
dry, seasonal Monwana riverbed, and has comfy intimate areas for sitting
and doing as little as possible, and dining tables set along the edge so
you don’t miss the ellies stroll past while you’re lingering over breakfast.
Glamping is taken to luxe new heights in the tents ... it’s all eye-catching
black mosquito nets, draped floor to ceiling windows, bespoke furniture,
a romantic bath and adventurous outdoor rainfall shower, and each
with a private deck and plunge pool. It would be unusual for you not to
sometime during the night hear the low grunts and moans of a lion or
the whooping call of a hyena.
For groups of up to six, there’s an uber luxury, private Villa, with its own
central lounge, dining area, pool and an outdoor area which you’ll find
it difficult to tear yourselves away from. Villa guests also get their own
private game vehicle and chef, and children are welcome. Massive spoil!
Meals, too, are created to surprise ... so dinner may be around a fire in the
river bed with traditional - albeit really glammed up - lodge options, or
up on the deck with true gourmet options. It’s all great platters of tapas
or grilled calamari or tempura prawns or lamb loin, it’s mango salsa, and
mashed brinjal, and smoked raisin puree. Sounds pretentious ... it’s not.
Obviously, game drives are the highlight of any trip to the bush ...
and with exceptional trackers and guides and an animal-attracting
combination of terrain, rivers and vegetation, sightings are frequent,
close up and exciting. Although nothing’s guaranteed, this area is known
for its leopard ... spotting a massive male leopard on the hunt (we did), a
female with her kill up a tree (we did) and a mum with her babe basking
and playing in the sun (we did) made for an unforgettable trip.
Okay ... let’s chat about the once-in-a-lifetime offer. A stay at Saseka
usually costs R15805 a person a night, but the post-lock-down special
(for South African residents only), is R4999 a person a night, with a
minimum two night stay. This includes accommodation, all meals
(breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner), hot beverages, early morning and
late afternoon game drives, and local sundowner drinks. Extras include
optional guided walks, and laundry, and the lodge does (unfortunately)
have Wifi. These rates exclude peak season (December 16, 2020 to
January 5, 2021). Details: www.thornybush.com
First impressions count. And a collection of blue and white Delft-inspired vases
and pots on an entrance table make a stylish, classic statement. The idea is to
have a collection of different sizes and shapes (matchy-matchy doesn’t work
here), displayed together. We’ve searched, and found the best selection of
different vases at Biggie Best (we should have known!). Tall and shapely urns,
round little ginger jars, flat plates for your keys and loads that would be perfect
for pot plants ... simply stunning. More good news ... Biggie Best is
now stocked in selected Volpes stores ... so double shopping
fun. Details: volpes.co.za/biggie-best. We’ve got a set of these
to give away to one lucky (and stylish) Get It reader ... simply
