Brains in gear for bike track
TONI.WILLIAMS
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
Berms, asee saw, triplejumps and a
pump trackare some of the features
planned forapupilled biketrack on
thegrounds of Hinds School.
The pupils have been fundraising
forthe projectsince the start of the
year.Itwill cost around $20,000and
they are over halfwayintheir
fundraising efforts.
Year 7pupil Charlie Pickford, 12,
said the rural school was mostly
surrounded by 100km roading zones,
so many of the pupilsdid not have
safe areas to ride abike. He lives on
theeast sideofHinds andcrosses
State Highway 1toget to and from
school, so biking to school was not
ideal.
The pupils were compelled to do
something after having awheelsday
atthe school and wanting to ride all
thetime. Charlie and his school
mates banded together to getaschool
bike track.
The seniorclass, Piwakawaka, put
together acasestudy, made aclay
tabletop model of their design ideas
andlearned skills from school
parents such as Kate Moorheadwho
spoke to thechildren about
approaching businessesand
organisations for sponsorship.
Other fundraising ideas have
included iceblocks sales, sausage
sizzlesand an adventure raceevent.
Preloved clothing will also be sold
at the school’s Country Dayevent.
Once completed, the track will
wind 620 metresaround an unused
areas of the school grounds.
Oftenused areas of the field have
been built into the design and will not
beaffected.
The track will have weavingand log
Hinds School classmates (from left) Maisie Hancox, Charlie Pickford and
Morgan Harbutt show some of the planned bike track features on amodel.
sections as well as bypasses around
someofthe tricky spots.
The projecthas had the experience
of bike track engineer Cam Bisset,
who helped tweakand polish the
children’s original design into a3D
model. The 3D model is used by the
children to show prospective
sponsors, with differing levels of
sponsorship available in bronze,
silver or gold.
The childrenare also looking to
have ashipping container on site to
store sparebikes that children
without bikes can use.
The container will include asmall
workshop where children, using
parentsorbikeshop owners, canbe
taughtbasicrepairs and
maintenanceonthe bikes.
So far there has been great
community support including gold
sponsorship from rural companies
such as Rylib, Align, Rural Transport,
Phillip Wareing Transport and
Rangitata Dairies but the children
are stillseeking more to complete the
project.
They arehopeful it will be done by
the end of the yearsodeparting
pupils can enjoy the track before they
leave.
RiverCrossingprojectmanager
straightforward development, with
known good operators seeingbeyond
the immediate impact of covid.
‘‘You have to planpositively for the
future.People want to shopand buy
the community and it will bring real
benefitfor Ashburton.’’
Tricroft general manager Tony
beenalongtime in the making.’’
He saidKmart andthe other stores
stop retail leakageaspeople headed
outoftownto shop. AMarket
