Knitted wool hats, gloves given<br />

Wool hats and fingerless<br />

gloves knittedwith rural<br />

communitiesinmind have<br />

been handed over to<br />

PresbyterianSupport.<br />

The woollen items were<br />

knittedbymembers of Rural<br />

Women New Zealand (RWNZ).<br />

Initially startedasaRegion<br />

2projectitwas embraced by<br />

Mid Canterbury provincial<br />

members whothisweek got to<br />

distribute their creations.<br />

Mid Canterbury provincial<br />

president MargVerrall said<br />

around 60 hats in varying sizes<br />

andgloves were giventothe<br />

Presbyterian Support to give<br />

to its rural community,<br />

includingthosewithin the<br />

Mana Akeservicewhich<br />

reaches into school<br />

communities.<br />

Each completed hat hasa<br />

Rural Women New Zealand<br />

label stitched on to it.<br />

“We hope to make a<br />

differencealongthe way,<br />

wherever it’s needed,” Mrs<br />

Verrall said.<br />

risk, children and young<br />

Sometimes support includes<br />

awraparound service with<br />

multiple services able to help<br />

empower childrenand their<br />

families.<br />

Funding for<br />

construction<br />

apprentices<br />

VentureTimaru Limited will<br />

receive $4 million to initiate and<br />

manage 100new construction<br />

industry apprenticeships in Mid<br />

Canterbury,South Canterbury and<br />

North Otago.<br />

The funding is part of a$14m<br />

packagefor regional New Zealand<br />

announced last Friday and will<br />

offerapathwaytotrades training<br />

through an investment in<br />

apprenticeships.<br />

The apprenticeships are partof<br />

the $40 million Regional<br />

Apprenticeship Initiative (RAI)<br />

announced in June by Regional<br />

Economic Development Minister<br />

Shane Jones.<br />

Venture Timaru Limited will<br />

work with employersin<strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

and wider Mid Canterbury,<br />

Timaru, Oamaruand wider North<br />

Otago to identifyapprenticeship<br />

opportunities in small and<br />

medium­sized businesses.<br />

It willmanage and administer<br />

the funds, facilitatefullpastoral<br />

careand ensureapprentices have<br />

the equipment they need.<br />

The focus of the programme is<br />

primarily the constructiontrades<br />

including building,plumbing,<br />

electrical, painting and plastering,<br />

but will also look at<br />

apprenticeships in othersectors<br />

likeprimary, engineeringand<br />

manufacturing sectors.<br />
