Congratulations
Lip Sync 2020
As advised in aprevious newsletter the changing COVID requirements
necessitated achange to the customary live performance evening, which
was scheduled for Tuesday 18 August. This evening was instead replaced
by video entries.
The Junior and Senior Sections were judged by Teacher of Drama
Jack Hanrahan, and the HouseFest by our ever-versatile House Sports
Co-ordinatorand Withdrawal Room Supervisor Jayne Cornelius.
PerformanceDirectorand Teacher of Drama ClaireBubb said thatauditions
wereheld beforeCOVID restrictions createdthe need to change to on-line,
but that these were very well attended. From these auditions fourteen
groups were selectedtogothrough to the finals competition.
Resultsfrom the on-line competition were:
Excitement ishigh amongst the College Team Shooters with the recent
announcement of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Shooting
Competition (NZSSS) confirmed results.
This competition is shot throughout the length and breadth of New
Zealand and demands ahigh standard towin. With five member teams,
the process really tests the depth of aschool’s talent. AshburtonCollege
should be rightly proud to not only have won, in anew record result, but
to have their Number 2team beating out other schools’first teams. The
result is avery real credit to the students, totheir dedication and talent,
and especially in such atrying year.
This competition is a postal shoot and is run over four rounds of shooting,
being 3 x 10 shot matches and a final ‘double card’ round of a 1 x 20 shot
match. This makes it a significant competition throughout which, to be
successful, teams have to consistently produce quality results over a long
period of time.
Overall the twoteams gained aremarkable set of results, with Ashburton
College having medallists in four of the fiveindividual grades. Jack Jones
was perhaps the hard luck story, finishing with an excellent score, for a
close4th in CGrade, just out of the medals.
AshburtonCollege 1Team
The winning team members were: Shania Harrison-Lee (Captain),
Jack Jones,Jack McIntosh, CharlotteMcKenzie and Emma Smith.
Shania Harrison-Lee as Captain led from the frontand the other shooters
have all met the challenge head-on, with fantastic results.
More than impressively, this is the sixth consecutive year that Ashburton
College has won this title. While there isaconsistency ofteam members,
there are also new shooters in the mix which speaks hugely well for the
depth of talentwithin the MidCanterburycommunity.
Gold Medal and Champion Team with aRecord-Winning Score
Theteamgained this win with amorethanimpressiverecordscore of
1954.102, which the co-ordinator ofthe event noted ‘would take some
beating’inthe future. Second-placed was Palmerston North Girls’High
School,on1941.81 which Manager Nina McKenzie said wasascore that, in
manyother years, would have wonthe competition. Thirdwas Cambridge
High School with 1919.70 points.
To give some idea of how strong this final winning team score was, the
team’s average across the targets wasataMasterGrade level (the highest
grade of shooting in New Zealand), which is simply exceptional for
secondarystudents.
In the final double card round, which is generally considered to be
demanding of secondary students, the Ashburton College 1 team
produced an average of 196.75/200, which is phenomenal shooting on
any day, let alone under pressure. This level sealed the victory for the
team, afterentering the finalround with only aslimtwo pointlead!
ImpressiveIndividual Results were:
In amongst the College 1Team result, were also impressive individual
results:
Shania Harrison-Lee Gold Medal Master Grade Champion, and
tussle with her Palmerston North counterpart,
Stephanie McNair.
The balance ofthe team, plus Claudia shooting as an individual, had
good individual finishes in DGrade, being: Claudia Cudmore 8th;
Brontson Cudmore 11th; Sama Sooialo 25th, Bree Greer 35th, and
Tane Moore41st).
Very SoundTeam2Result
Madi Tourle helped steer the Ashburton College 2team to 9th placing
overall, impressively beating first teams of some other schools and
showing exciting potential, particularly given the majority ofthe team is
made up of junior students.
Congratulations go also to neighbouring Mt Hutt College shooters, who
finished avery creditable 8th placing overall, with their shooters being
Amelia Swan, Eddie Millichamp,HunterLill, Jess Heavenand Jess Lill.
BatonChanges Ahead andContribution Appreciations
This will be both Shania’s andEmma’sfinal year forthis match, as they are
Year 13 students this year. Their contribution to the team, in their time at
Ashburton College, has been enormous. They leave Ashburton College
in good stead though, with all three other members of the first team only
being Year 10 and, together with Madi and manyothers, thereisperhaps
the strongest contingentcoming through thatthe College has ever seen,
which bodes well forcontinued success.
Medals and Certificatesfor both the Teams matchesand Individual Grades,
areontheir waytoAshburtonCollege forpresentation.
In ayear thathas been very disrupted, this group has worked consistently
hardinthe time available to them, andthoroughly deserve their successes.
