Fairton plant defib remains handy<br />

Adefibrillator that once saved the<br />

life of aFairton meat worker is being<br />

donated to the community the<br />

mothballedmeat plant onceserved.<br />

Silver Fern Farmsand workers at<br />

theplant jointlybought the<br />

defibrillator, whichwas ‘‘only used<br />

once in anger’’, said personnel officer<br />

Francis Renner, whowill have his<br />

last day at theplant next Wednesday.<br />

On theoccasion thedefibrillator<br />

was used, aworker on the<br />

slaughterboard suffered aheart<br />

attack. The defibrillator was used to<br />

restart his heart and hewas airlifted<br />

to Christchurch Hospitalby<br />

helicopter.<br />

The manstill works forSilver Fern<br />

Farms, now in Hokitika.<br />

The Fairton plant was shutdown in<br />

2017 and has been sold to Talley’s.<br />

Mr Rennersaid thecompany and<br />

former workers wantedthe<br />

defibrillator, worthabout $5000,to<br />

stay in the Fairton community and<br />

considered FairtonSchoolthe best<br />

Principal Mike Hill said it was<br />

great the special equipment would be<br />

available for the Fairtoncommunity.<br />

It will be sited for access, even when<br />

theschool is closed.<br />

‘‘We think it is areally goodideait<br />

staysinthe community for the benefit<br />

of the community, though you hope<br />

you never have to useit.’’<br />

afternoon tea, speeches and the<br />

cutting of acake.<br />

VISUAL INSPECTION OF<br />

TRANSMISSION LINES IN YOUR AREA.<br />

Transpower, the owner and operator of<br />

the national grid, will be carrying out a<br />

routine visual maintenance inspection of<br />

transmission lines in your area by helicopter.<br />

We have been undertaking inspections of the<br />

structures on the Glenavy to Waitaki 110 kV<br />

line and also our Roxburgh to Islington<br />

220 kV line (as shown on the map) by alow<br />

flying helicopter over the last month.<br />

Ourfinalflyover dateis planned<br />

for Monday 12October <strong>2020</strong>.<br />

The helicopter will fly at aconstant speed of<br />

about 30 km/h, starting at Waitaki and will take<br />

approximately 4hours per session.<br />
