Thecouncil­owned<br />

development in north­east<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>has expandedslowly<br />

but steadily since Stage 1started<br />

in 2010.<br />

The businessparkwas<br />

developed in response to<br />

demand forcommercial and<br />

industriallandinthe district<br />

and emerged fromacouncil<br />

development planbackin2005.<br />

Stages 2and 3will include<br />

kerbs and channel construction<br />

and water, power, stormwater,<br />

phone andsewerage services<br />

being laid. Roads are expected to<br />

be sealedbetweenOctober 15<br />

and20.<br />

Two newsectionagreements<br />

weresignedover lockdown,one<br />

a2ha site in the existing<br />

development which is currently<br />

under construction andwill be a<br />

processing plantsupportingthe<br />

rural sector.<br />

Anew fishing season opens on<br />

October1,though high country<br />

Lakes are closed until the first<br />

Saturday in November to protect<br />

rainbow trout spawning and<br />

othersensitivefisheries.<br />

But there are still plentyof<br />

good spots in the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

districtfor fishing, saysCentral<br />

South Island Fish and Game<br />

officer Rhys Adams.<br />

‘‘Lake Hood has ahigh<br />

population of perch and afew<br />

troutthat cruise theshoreline,<br />

it’s agreat spot to picnic and<br />

learntofish.’’<br />

The<strong>Ashburton</strong> Riveralso held<br />

somenice brown trout and the<br />

Rangitata andits tributaries<br />

provided great fishing andviews,<br />

he said.<br />

Further afield,Lake Opuha<br />

was apopulardestination on<br />

opening day and throughout the<br />

summer. Kidscould use agarden<br />

worm for bait and catch a<br />

rainboworbrown trout.<br />

spring seasoninplace for<br />

some big trout, up to 14.5kg,had<br />

been reported there.<br />

He saidfishing wasagreat way<br />

to stayconnected withnature as<br />

well as providing afish for<br />

dinner.<br />

‘‘The new season’s opening<br />

falls in the school holidays and<br />

Fish and Game are encouraging<br />

experiencedanglerstomakethe<br />

time to teach ayoung person how<br />

to fish.’’<br />

Everyone fishing for trout,<br />

salmon andperchinfreshwater<br />

needs asports fishing licence;<br />

those caughtwithoutone risk<br />

losing their gear and afine up to<br />

$5000. Licences canbebought for<br />

afamily,orjustfor oneday,and<br />

are at tackle shops or online at<br />
