An Englishoak chestdating backto<br />
1634 has been giftedto the Methven<br />
Museum and is on display.<br />
The chest is in goodcondition and<br />
is of veryhigh quality.<br />
It has beenevaluatedand<br />
authenticated by English furniture<br />
expert Dr Bernard Cotton, who says<br />
its design and embellishment is in<br />
keepingwith the 1634 date carved on<br />
it.<br />
Thatdateand the initials IH are<br />
assessed as beingoriginal to the<br />
piece.<br />
The chest has framed and panelled<br />
constructiononthefront sides, rear<br />
and top, withthe framing elements<br />
all featuringdecorative mouldings.<br />
The original fish tailhinges are<br />
nailed with‘‘rosehead’’nails and<br />
cleated overinthe bottompart, but<br />
the nails have beenreplaced with<br />
screws in theupper section.<br />
The chest has been offered as a<br />
permanent gift to theMethven<br />
Historical Society andfor display<br />
and storage by Methven Museumby<br />
Gerry Ireland,whosemother Grace<br />
had it beforehim .<br />
Grace Ireland was the<br />
granddaughter of one of the first<br />
settlersinMethven, WilliamMorgan,<br />
and his wife Isobel.<br />
It is believed Morganmay have<br />
broughtthe chest withhim from<br />
England, but the MethvenMuseum is<br />
still delving deeper to find out more.<br />

names of candidates for the voting<br />
district, whichrunsfromRakaia to<br />
south of Timaru.<br />
There is only one change to the<br />
candidate list since the official cutoff,<br />
with Libertarians dropping out<br />
and Advance NZ coming in.<br />
The nine candidates are: Lachie<br />
Ashton (New Conservative),<br />
Brannon Favel(SocialCredit),<br />
Megan Hands (National), Hamish<br />
Hutton(ACT),Grant Kelynack (NZ<br />
Outdoors Party),Gerrie Ligtenberg<br />
(Greens), Jo Luxton (Labour), Aroha<br />
Maru (Advance NZ),James Rae (Not<br />
aParty).<br />
The candidatesmeeting, on<br />
<strong>September</strong> 30, is being organised by<br />
the Rotary Clubof<strong>Ashburton</strong>.<br />
Each ofthe nine candidateswill<br />
have seven minutes speaking time,<br />
plus severalminutes to take<br />
questions.<br />
Thespeaking orderwill be drawn<br />
on stage on thenight.<br />
There willbeat least30minutesat<br />
theend formorequestions from the<br />
