and was completed in September 2002
with plant commissioning in the October.
Full automated commercial production
started in December 2002
The conception, design, engineering drawing
- the full plant specification is the work
of an in-house Plasmor team headed by
Chairman, Antony Slater and Jim Marshall
(pictured below), supported by Engineering
Draughtsman, Barry Healey.
A large proportion of the important
components were also manufactured
in-house by Plasmor and the Company’s
Engineering Team carried out the
installation. The project was managed
by Mike Bailes, (pictured above right)
General Manager of the Boughton site.

metres - which is one million Plasmor

Plasmor Lightweight Aggregate Blocks and

particularly popular in the Liverpool City
Council area and with Lincolnshire County

Kingswood School
One of the first major projects of the eighties
to feature Plasmor Architectural Masonry -
Split Rib is being refurbished. Originally
named the Perronet Thompson School,
this Bransholme school has been renamed
‘Kingswood’. Plasmor Architectural Masonry
has been supplied for the refurbishment
by Eastern Division.

COMMUNITY&SOCIALHousing
RYFIELDS has been developed by the Arena
Housing Association in partnership with
Warrington Borough Council and the ExtraCare
Charitable Trust with the aim of helping
people to stay active and independent for as
long as possible. The completed scheme is a
carefully considered self-contained community
with 226 flats, 17 bungalows, with an internal
street which offers a shop, laundry, hairdresser,
gymnasium, computer centre, village hall,
village bar and village restaurant. Ryfields is
set in beautifully landscaped gardens within
a secure self contained environment.
Scheme management will be democratic
with residents having a say in the running
of the community.

OPENED BY A DUCHESS -
NEW HOMES FOR TOWN RESIDENTS
The attractive Leconfield Close Almshouses
development on Keldgate, Beverley is the
latest of many new properties in the East
Yorkshire town to be built by Barker & Grantham
for their client Beverley Consolidated Charity.
Opened by The Duchess of Northumberland
last September, the development comprises ten
town houses and four bungalows. Occupants
are required to be over 60 years of age and
have been residents of Beverley for more than
ten years. The Almshouses are only a short walk
along Keldgate to Beverley Minster and about
five minutes walk to the main pedestrianised
shopping streets.

NEW KERB FOR
DISABLED ACCESS
Local Authority readers will be interested to hear about a
co-operative venture in design and development between
Plasmor, Sheffield City Council and the three Metropolitan
Borough Councils of South Yorkshire. The outcome: two new
kerb products which form part of the Councils response to
the Building Regulations 2000 part M “Access Facilities for
Disabled People”
The new kerb PLASMOBILITY Kerb 99 and its associated
Transition Kerb used with our established low chamfer paving
product Plasline, will accommodate the Councils requirements
and accord with the terms of their ‘New Design Guide’ for
Home Zones, Squares, Mews and Court. As part of the
development process Plasmor consulted with the relevant
disabled persons groups and the disabled persons officers
of the Councils.
In Sheffield and South Yorkshire, Contractors are being advised
to use the new Kerbs with 60mm or 80mm PLASLINE -
a paving product with such a minimal chamfer

that it virtually eliminates vibration and
bumping when crossed by

THIRD ANNIVERSARY
OF EXPANDED CLAY
PRODUCTION
As Plasmor approach the third anniversary of
expanded clay production at Heck we have already
hit a landmark output figure - more than three
quarters of a million cubic metres of expanded clay
aggregate pellets. The fact that this far surpasses
the initial design output of the Kiln is due
to a combination of continual research and
development and the creative use of various
new additives and innovative practices.
In his Annual Production and Maintenance Report
prepared after the annual winter shutdown of the
Kiln, Clay Plant Manager
Ron Parker (pictured above)
revealed another impressive
statistic - a 91.6 % reduction
in production downtime.
This staggering improvement
reflects a reduction from 297.2 hours in 2001
to a mere 24.9 hours in 2002. A remarkable
performance by the Clay Plant team.
Supply of our high quality ultra lightweight
expanded clay has been extended to all block
producing factories in the Group resulting in
increasing Fibolite Block range sales in each
Plasmor Division.

NVQ TRAINING
AT HECK WORKS
The majority of the Heck workforce have
recently undertaken an on-site training scheme
which will result in a City and Guilds National
Vocational Qualification in Performing
Manufacturing Operations.
This training has involved taking part in three
half-day workshops and ongoing on-the-job
evaluation. The objective is to lead the personnel
involved towards a culture of manufacturing
excellence, with the added benefits of job
security and satisfaction.
Les Hutchinson, the Works Manager, who
along with other managers on site attended the
course, says “it is not always easy to find
the time for training programmes of this
size, involving so many people. However,
I believe the benefits to the workforce
and the Company make it well worthwhile
with increased quality awareness
helping to keep Plasmor at the leading
edge of block manufacture”.

25 YEARS SERVICE
FRANK BRAIN, Engineer at Knottingley
completed 25 years of service with Plasmor in
January 2003. At a presentation in front of
colleagues to celebrate the occasion, Frank
received Waterford Crystal from Mike Wilcox,
Plasmor Group Production Director.
Frank served 20 years in the Knottingley works
and for the past five years has been heavily
involved in the procurement of new
equipment for all the Company’s new plant
projects including the expanded clay kiln at Heck
and the new Block Paving Plant at Boughton.

NURSERY SCHOOL
PROJECT IN THE
GAMBIA
Following our report on the Aid project
undertaken by Knottingley Sales Office
Manager Lynn Cox in Points New issue
32, Lynn and her husband Ian have
continued their fundraising efforts and made
several more trips to the Marlin Nursery school.
Lynn spent a week in the Gambia over the
Christmas period when she saw the roof
timbers being erected and the roof
completed. During her stay Lynn went to
the local builders merchants to purchase
reinforcing bars which as the photo above
shows was delivered to site by donkey
and cart.
Progress is very slow but steady with
all the blocks having to be handmade
on site using a single block mould. GMT
takes on a very different meaning -
“Gambia Maybe Time”.
Work is currently going on to complete the
toilet block - with five junior toilets en route
from the UK to the Gambia in a container.
All the blocks pictured right are for blocking
out the walls of the septic tank.

ON THE DAY
Last year’s Coarse Fishing competition,
set up for Builders and Merchants,
was won by Simon Clark of E.H. Smith
who landed a 81 /2 lb. Carp. If you are

The significant investment in our Bow depot
reported in issue 32 has resulted in a number
of visual and practical improvements.

have been extended and Bow now has a new
access road. All part of a planned programme
aimed at increasing the importance of Bow and
