Race bikes need to be replaced every
so often, and what do you do with the
old race bike when you get a new one.
You sell it right?. Well not if you are
veteran racer of anything on two wheels
Paul Vollmer. He used his old race bike
as a base to custom build a Mad Max
themed beast called APOCALYPSE.
The bike was originally a Yamaha R1 SP in full
race trim, and for its time it was a great race
bike.
Paul did the original sketches for the bike
in 2018, but only started building the bike in
2020 with Glen at Ingmar engineering in Johannesburg.
Aston Nesbit of AN racing did all the
engine and electric work on the bike.
Apocalypse has got all the trick bits, a quick
shifter, a power commander and modifications
have been done to the cams amongst other
things, so it’s by no means slow, in fact at the
photoshoot at Red Star Raceway it proved to be
very capable on the track with its Ohlins suspension
up front and WP at that back.
Being fast or handling well was never really
the main point of building this bike, it was just a
benefit gained from having a good bike to start
the project with says Paul.
Apocalypse was built to be a head turner and
fun to ride, and when we saw people’s reactions
to it and the riders smiles when they got off the
bike, there is no doubt Apocalypse has achieved
those goals with distinction.
Paul enjoyed the build so much that he intends
to build a few more one of a kind bikes. You
don’t need to keep a look out for them because
if they are anything like Apocalypse you won’t be
able to miss them.
