programs. This award is an
acknowledgement of all of
our work in “saving lives and
changing lives.” The work
the Knights of Columbus
does in our church and our
community is often unseen
but not unfelt by those lives
we touch and change for the better.
Thanks to:
� Brother Bobby Buendia and his crew of Knights for
serving over 600 hotdogs at the Bothell Night out
Against Crime on August 2 nd .
� Thanks to Greg Lum and Dan OBrien for another
great July 4 th Bothell Parade float and vintage jeep
convoy.
� Thanks to Bill Paulson & Dan Heye for another great
time at our Annual District BBQ Competition on July
23. The sun arrived just in time!
� Thanks to the Mathewson Family who hosted the
Salmon Bake on Sunday, August 21. All proceeds
will go to our Council Scholarship Endowment Fund.
Lastly, we want to welcome all the new Knights and their
families to our Council. You have joined a special group of
men who give selflessly to our community and care for each
other.

Knight of the Month – Dan Heye
Dan Heye serves as our Deputy Grand Knight and has been a
member of our council since 2005. Ironically his son, Colin,
who recently graduated from Notre Dame, encouraged Dan to
join the Knights. Dan can be seen volunteering at nearly every
function the Knights sponsor, flipping pancake, cooking
hotdogs, or most recently co-chairing the BBQ Competition
with Bill Paulson. In his “spare time,” Dan is a crew member
of the top-ranked Spirit of Qatar hydroplane team, who’s driver
Dave Willock just broke the all-time win record of legendary
Bill Muncey. Dan and his wife Diane also have a daughter,
Kristin, who is a junior at Boston College.
Family of the Month – Harry & Julia Mathewson
Every Knight who has a blue Bothell Council vest needs to
thank Julia. She has personally made every vest in our
Council’s history! She and Harry our inseparable. When Julia
wants to get something done, Harry just says “how high?”
Recently Julia and others dreamed of buying a convention oven
for our Hall kitchen. A few chicken and roast beef dinners
later (cooked by Julia of course) we now have a brand new
convention oven. On August 21 Harry and Julia hosted a
Salmon Bake to add more money to our Council Scholarship
Endowment Fund. He is a founding member of our Council
and was instrumental in the purchase of our council property
and remodeling the old barn into our current Hall. We all
thanks Harry and Julia plus their son, John, for all of their
efforts on behalf of the Council
Marathon Men & Women Wanted!
Brother Jim Riddell (Bothell Council Vocations Chair) is
coordinating a fundraiser for our Vocations Program. Jim is
running the Seattle Marathon on November 27 and is recruiting
any other Knights and their families to join him. The runners
will be asking people to sponsor each mile they run and 100%
of the proceeds will go to our Bothell Council Vocations
Program. You can contact Jim at (360) 281-4400 or
riddell2011@hotmail.com if you are interested in running or
sponsoring a runner. As Jim said recently, “it is hard to run a
marathon, harder to find a potential priest.”

Bothell & Woodinville Councils in July 4th
Parade
The Knights of Columbus were well represented at the Bothell
4 th of July Parade with a Fourth Degree Honor Guard, 3 Jeeps
with past and present Military Heroes, and a well decorated
truck and float. This year’s theme was “Making a Difference”.
Our Knights prominently displayed our mission, “We Change
Lives and We Save Lives”.
Our entry is led by Faithful Navigator Sir Bill Paulson and Past
Faithful Navigator Sir Richard Foudray. Color Corps
Commander is Sir Bob Miller, with Sir Dan O’Brien, Sir Joe
Pinedo and Sir Del Treichel in back.
Our Retired Military Personnel included Sir Harry Mathewson
and Sir Ben Anstey. We were honored to also have the
Wilsons, who are Active Military Personnel, in our group.
Jim Tracy of the Woodinville Council provided the trailer. Our
tow truck was ably guided by Sir Dan Heidrich and paid a
special tribute to this year’s Parade Grand Marshal, Pete
Anthony - owner of Uncle Peteza’s Pizza. Father Johnnie took
a lot of video of the Parade to show his parishioners back in
Malawi how Americans celebrate their freedom.
After the 4 th of July parade family and friends gathered at our
Council Hall to enjoy a hotdog, potato salad, and a cold
beverage. It was a wonderful sunny day as we honored
America and those who serve and protect our Freedom.

Summer BBQ Competition on July 23rd
Summer BBQ competition held on July 23 rd from 11am till
4pm was a great success again this year! BBQ smoke filled the
air along with jazz music from the band “Still Kickin”. Guests
were able to sample BBQ meats from seven competing teams
from around the area this year, pulled pork sandwiches with
sides of Coleslaw, baked beans and chips and lemonade hit the
spot. Root beer floats were a huge hit thanks to the teen crew
who served them up.
During the event a traveling mass kit was presented to Fr.
Johnnie Chimwaza by Grand Knight Mike McCloskey on
behalf of council 6686 and assembly 3123. Fr. Michael
Wagner, a past recipient of our councils support was presented
a check for $250 and Chasuble and Stole with KofC 3 rd degree
emblem by PSD Pat Malone.

The Co-chairman Bill Paulson and Dan Heye would like to

Council 6686 Vest Program
It is an honor to wear a blue Knights of Columbus Council
6686 vest. These vests are custom made by our very own Julia
Mathewson. To earn a vest, a Knight must volunteer 40 hours
of service on Council related programs and projects. Once you
reach 40 hours, notify DGK Dan Heye at d2c2heye@juno.com.
He will present your vest at the next Council Business meeting.
We encourage Knights to wear these vests at St. Brendan
Masses and functions to encourage other men to join our efforts
in serving the community.
