The Pulp team is always up for a challenge – and this year 

has definitely been a challenge! We’ve been able to pivot 

and change for how our clients want to work with us. And 

we’ve worked hard to respond quickly to the changes they 

need at home. Even if you felt your home was perfect six months 

ago, you’ve probably needed to adjust and even renovate based 

on how your lifestyle has transformed since the pandemic hit. 

Home is our haven now, like never before. We want to escape

When a Dallas family of five came to us with a tight timeline to create a gorgeous home in 

a 6,700-square-foot space, we were ready to take on the challenge! They needed all of 

the architectural selections, painting, flooring, and furnishings selected, installed, and 

ready to go by the time the kids started a new school year. We only had a few months, 

but our organized system kept us on track to deliver a gorgeous home. 

They also had a large art collection, but it needed to be curated for the home. The clients wanted the 

spaces to look collected, but lived-in. They wanted their house to feel like a home, not a museum for 

their art. 

Pulp worked diligently to nail this client’s style throughout the home, making smart renovation and 

furnishing choices that surprised, delighted, and completely transformed this house into a curated 

family home.

Travel isn’t the same for the foreseeable future, but we all still need a great place to unwind. So backyard 

projects are exploding in popularity, particularly for living spaces, pools, and kitchens. Landscaping and outdoor 

rooms also have a very high-return on investment, boosting resale values by almost double what you spend! 

With people spending more time at home, 

these remodeling and design projects are hot, hot, hot! 

Our homes have become so much more in the last few months. We’re using them in ways that we never 

thought we would, like as schoolrooms, theaters, restaurants, getaways, and sanctuaries. 

Home improvement, redesign, and remodeling projects are up by an 

incredible 60% to help our homes function for all the ways we use them now.

This is the room that’s probably getting the biggest workout now. We’ve always considered the kitchen to be the heart of the home, 

but now it’s command central for the family, too. If you’re spending more time cooking and less time eating out, you’ve probably 

noticed a lot of things you’d like to change. And that is exactly why this room is #1 when it comes to requests for remodels!

Consider how you use your kitchen before you start your plan. 

You may want a seating area for your kids, or a larger freezer

antibacterial surfaces are all growing in popularity, as well as 

built-in coffee machines and wine refrigerators.

Bathrooms 

Who knew we could wash our hands so many times in a day – but that’s our new normal. Bathroom remodels come in two 

main areas. Some people want a gorgeous spa-like sanctuary that helps them escape, while others are looking for better 

clean-up stations. Either way, this room is getting more attention than ever before! 


HOME OFFICES 

Having 3-4 people on Zoom calls at once can put a 

strain on your family – both because of privacy/noise 

concerns and because you’re asking a lot of your 

WiFi. Be sure you have a new router and the 

highest level of internet bandwidth you can get. 

To address privacy and noise concerns, create 

dedicated home offices in extra rooms (like that 

unused guest room or dining room) and in kids’ 

rooms. You want everyone to be able to close 

a door to reduce noise. 

Add extras where you can, like more storage for 

printers and scanners, extra plugs and charging 

stations, great lighting, and comfortable work chairs. 


BATHROOMS 

For spa retreats, invest in steam showers, saunas, deep freestanding tubs, 

and luxe materials.

Consider touchless technology in this room, like toilets that flush with 

the wave of a hand, or faucets that turn on automatically. That keeps the 

bathroom cleaner and free of germs. 

There are amazing antimicrobial surfaces available today for bathrooms – 

a good investment during a pandemic. 

Add personality to these rooms with fun wallpapers and colors. And be sure 

the room is bright enough for things like shaving and makeup application. 

Home Office 

Everyone is working in the home now, from the youngest to the oldest, 

so having plenty of work and study areas is key. Mom may need a dedicated office, 

while the kids need desk space in their rooms. However you configure it, these spaces 

are critical to getting things done and to help reduce stress in the home.

The open arms on the Century Calla Swivel 

still embrace the person sitting in it, but they

Our clients needed a guest seat in their home 

office, so we placed the Bernhardt Turner Swivel 

Chair near the desk. They can use it as a place to 

read or a seat for family or friends.

Century’s Durian Swivel looks chic and sleek 

in our client’s Seattle lake home. Since there is a 

lake view behind the chair, we wanted to select 

one that turns 360 degrees. And, we made 

sure it was an indoor/outdoor fabric 

to hold up to family. 

LINCOLN SWIVEL CHAIR 

One of the best things about a swivel chair is that it 

turns to take in a different view. In this great room, 

the Lincoln Swivel from CR Laine lets a person turn to 

talk to someone on the sofa or turn to watch the TV.

Icy 

Blue 

In color psychology, a grayed blue creates a feeling of harmony, 

peace, and calm in people who view it. Mix in a quiet gray color 

and you have an icy combo that will chill any bad vibes.

The perfect mixture of 

blue and green, this color 

evokes the sea and the sky. 

Being near water is proven 

to lower blood pressure, so 

creating this “watery” mood 

was our way of bringing

Daffodil 

In color psychology, yellow speaks to 

optimism, happiness, and positivity – and 

couldn’t we all use more of that? Using 

pale yellow in a room is almost guaranteed 

to make you smile, so we added this 

uplifting color to our client’s family room 

to keep their spirits high. 

Graphite 

Gray symbolizes neutrality and balance – and it’s a color that everyone 

loves. This mid-gray creates a seamless sightline from the room to the 

lake beyond, designed to soothe away our clients’ cares.

Shades of white gives us a feeling of softness and tranquility 

– perfect for a family room that doubles as a family oasis. 

Color psychology also shows that this color makes us think of 

innocence and sincerity, so it’s great hue for making you feel

Carob 

Brown is an earthy color that represents security, comfort, and a downto-earth 

quality. Creating a room around this color helps it become cozy

Kids’ rooms have always been important in homes, but 

they haven’t always been top-of-mind for designed spaces. 

Whether it’s a playroom or a bedroom, creating a great 

space for the littles in your life is critical today. These 

areas have to function for school days, play time, rest and 

relaxation, and so much more. Here’s how thoughtful design 

can support what your children, and you, need at home. 

WORK 

School has come home for many kids across the country 

these days, so homework spaces are critical. They need to 

be wired and ready to Zoom, and that means things like 

USB plugs, places to hide all those wires and chargers, lots 

of storage, and good work spaces. 

Even the tiniest tots need space to read and work 

on assignments, so in the room above we scaled the 

furnishings down to kid-size. An added bonus for 

early learning is a bright world map on the wall.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT 

The shelves and doors in the room 

above hide lots of supplies for art 

and homework, and having a couple 

of chairs means that more than one 

child can work here at a time. 

SLEEP 

Sleep is critical for growing 

bodies, so a bedroom designed 

for a good night’s rest is so 

important. But you also want 

kids to feel like the bedroom is 

their space and reflects their 

interests and personalities. In 

these rooms, we like to invest 

in great mattresses and fun 

decor – in that order. 

For older kids and teens, they need 

a grown-up space that is “cool” and 

ready to work as hard as they do. 

So in the space above there is a ton 

of storage, and a more hip vibe that 

will look fab on Zoom. 

Teens definitely do not want to have spaces that look like 

they’re still kids, but they do want them to still reflect who 

they are. In the space above, we added great mural of a 

baseball stadium for a major sports fan.

in this kid’s room adds a lot of pattern and color, 

while the shelves nearby ensure that favorite 

books and toys are ready for a bedtime story. 

For a young preteen fashionista, we designed a 

CHIC & COLORFUL room that spoke 

to her love of accessories and clothes.

Having a play space that’s separate from where they do 

homework is so important to kids. Just like us, they need to 

find work/life balance, so we love to design bright and bold 

spaces that will let their imaginations run wild. 

Every artist needs an atelier, so in 

this home we created an area where 

the tiny painters can create and 

display their masterpieces. 

A bold patterned rug becomes 

a raceway or a building zone 

when the toys come out. And 

when playtime is over, the large 

baskets and storage ottoman 

help keep things clean.

our clients’ kids what they would

8 tips for 

THE PERFECT BATH 

1 

Set the mood. Get the lighting right, 

light some amazing candles, gather all 

your bathing essentials in one spot, 

make sure your towel and robe are 

nearby, and start running your bath.

Detoxify. I typically skip all the 

bubble baths and fancy products 

and opt for epsom salt. If you’re 

soaking regularly this will save you a 

ton of money and actually give your 

body some detoxifying and healing 

benefits. Add 2 cups to hot water.

Always double fist. It’s super important 

to stay hydrated. I force myself to drink 

an entire glass of water in the tub since 

you’ll be prone to sweating out toxins. 

But, I also keep a little mood setting 

drink nearby. If I’m feeling sick or trying 

to stay healthy, I’ll drink tea. But, most

nights it’s wine or whiskey. 

Mask yourself. Once a week, I take my 

bath time as an opportunity to add in 

a beauty treatment. I either do a face 

mask or a hair mask that can stay on for 

more than 30 minutes- this is usually a 

hydrating treatment.

Designing a Ship Shape Family Home

Our clients bought a gorgeous Queen Anne home 

in Seattle that had a lot of character, but they 

wanted to put their own personal stamp on it. So 

they called in the experts! We love transforming 

homes into functional and stunning spaces that fit our clients’ 

lifestyles. This home already had a story to tell – it was built 

for a boat captain in 1906, so we also wanted to weave that 

nautical history into our design. The final result is a dynamic, 

well-styled home that our clients love! 

THE LIVING ROOM 

Right off the foyer, the living room entry is framed with 

fabulous glass panes, allowing a lot of light into this room. 

But it was a long room that needed updating and personality. 

We added two seating areas to give this family a lot of 

entertaining spaces for family and friends. The result is a 

much more defined and inviting space.

THE KITCHEN 

The care that goes into an older home was evident 

in the kitchen, where we found a built-in banquette 

in the breakfast nook and great light streaming in 

from the windows. We wanted to build on that with 

updated fixtures, more modern furnishings, and 

more functionality.

THE ENTRY 

A fabulous foyer greets guests as they enter the front 

door. While there was a lot of gorgeous millwork in this 

older home, it was looking a little tired and dated – it 

definitely needed some color and light. We added bright 

paint and great art, and then gave a nod to the home’s 

nautical past by preserving the lighthouse as the stair’s 

finial and adding a marine-style sconce on the wall.

We wanted to create a chic style in the primary bedroom while also giving our clients 

a restful retreat that would welcome them at the end of the day. We updated the wall 

covering, added great modern shapes in the chair and side table, and added a touch of glam 

with the pendants on either side of the bed. It’s an eclectic look that melds what both of our 

clients wanted in their personal space.

Biophilia is a major trend in the home right now. It’s 

the idea of combining the natural world with a built 

environment. One of the easiest ways to do that is to 

bring in fabulous house plants. Studies have shown

help clean the air in your home, and they also 

reduce stress and blood pressure.

Pantries are definitely stocked (and 

sometimes over stocked!) with staples 

today. And that can create havoc if you 

aren’t careful. We like to remind our 

clients that you should store things 

you don’t use as often in the pantry – 

like small specialty appliances, vases, 

and exotic ingredients. Once you have 

those in place, set up storage bins, clear 

canisters, and baskets for everything 

else. That helps keep things clean 

and organized, especially if you buy 

stackable containers. Use every inch 

that you can. You can store drinks on the

floor under a shelf if you need to, and 

you can buy hanging spice holders for 

the inside of the door. Have a place for 

everything and everything in its place. 

But don’t forget to add a little style, 

too. We painted the interior of a pantry 

we designed in a bright orange color – 

designed to make our clients smile!

SHAKE it UP 

The Perfect Cocktail to Kick Off Fall 

Relatively low in alcohol, this 

beverage served ‘up’ can ensure 

you enjoy a sophisticated cocktail 

and still have a good morning. 

INGREDIENTS 

1 oz. Averna Amaro Siciliano 

1 oz. Italian sweet vermouth (We like 

Carpano Antica Formula for this) 

½ oz. Mint infused simple syrup 

¾ oz. fresh lemon juice 

Mint leaves for garnish 

ice

Cocktail Shaker 

Juicer 

INSTRUCTIONS 

Add mint simple syrup, amaro, 

vermouth, and lemon juice in a 

cocktail shaker. Fill with ice. Shake 

until outside of shaker is frosty, 

about 30 seconds. Strain into a 

couple glass. Add a mint leaf to top 

of the cocktail.
