ULSU SPORTS PROSPECTUS

2020/21

Sport is an essential part of the student experience. In fact,

being a member of a club is often the highlight of your time at

the University of Leicester. I have experienced being a member

of a Team Leicester club as both an undergraduate and a

postgraduate and the opportunities I have been given, the

friendships I have formed and the memories I have created as a

result of it are unparallel. You are joining our sporting

community during unprecedented times.

Due to COVID-19 all sporting activity had to stop and our gym facilities had to close for a period of time.

My priority for the forthcoming year is to help all sports clubs begin to resume play as soon it is safe to

do during what I like to call our ‘extraordinary season’. There will be some individuals who are desperate

to return to their sport after a long period of time away. Others will feel anxious. I can assure you that

myself, the Students Union and Sport and Active Life are constantly checking guidance from the

government and NGB’s and updating information where necessary.

You will be able to find up to date training times on the Team Leicester website, or by messaging the

clubs directly. BUCS is set to resume in January, when clubs will be able to compete against other

universities. Therefore, your first semester provides a great opportunity to try out a range of sports.

Getting active is great for your wellbeing but also for meeting like-minded people. Forming friendships

will be vital to help you settle into university life.

Over 5000 students participate in sports programmes on campus and they help to raise approximately

£10,000 a year for charity. As our Varsity was cancelled this year, Thomas Slade (Club Captain of

American Football) organised a Virtual Varsity during lockdown against De Montford University. Students

ran/walked/cycled and raised £2298.41 for the NHS. Other highlights of a typical sporting year include

going on tour to Croatia and our annual Sports Awards which seek to celebrate all the sporting

achievements over the past academic year.

I look forward to welcoming all the new and returning students on campus and working alongside the

hard-working committees that are in charge of our clubs this year to maximise your sporting potential.

ARCHERY CLUB

ULAC is one of the quickest

developing sports clubs at the

University of Leicester. As a club

we welcome people of all abilities to

come and give archery a go. Whether

you have never held a bow before or

consider yourself the modern-day

Robin Hood, our club is the place for

you. The club has skilled coaches who

will be able to provide all the training,

support and guidance you need to get

competing. We even have plenty of

equipment that members can use to

get started!

BADMINTON CLUB

The University of Leicester

Badminton Club (ULBC) is one

of the biggest clubs at the

university and it is continuously

growing and improving. The club

provides a friendly atmosphere for all

athletes, from beginner to competitive

levels, therefore all abilities are

welcome and new players are

encouraged. Whether you are looking

to compete in a team, improve your

skill and fitness, or just to meet new

people, this is the club for you. At

ULBC we have three training sessions a

week and work closely alongside a

professional coach to help you

improve.

Established in 1948, the Boat

Club is a competitive rowing

club for athletes of all abilities.

Regardless of whether you are new to

the sport, an existing athlete, or

hoping to improve your fitness in a

dynamic, social environment; everyone

is welcome. National races, training

camps, tours and weekends away...

there's no shortage of sporting

activities to take part in. Regular

weekly socials are just the tip of the

iceberg for what our sporting family

CHEER AND STUNT

Cheerleading is a sport that has

been growing in popularity over

the past few years. The

Leicester Panthers embody the essence

of cheer by demonstrating the

technical, artistic and athletic elements

of the sport. We are one of the largest

and most successful clubs on campus

with over 100 members and countless

Grand and National Champion titles.

We have 9 teams which include Hip

Hop, Pom, stunt, full routine and a non

competitive performance team; this

means we can offer places to everyone

regardless of ability (most of our

members start with no previous

experience!). Cheerleading is an

excellent way to grow in skill, power

and confidence. As a club we believe

that with the variety within cheer,

there is something for everyone!

OF MY LIFE, IT OFFERS ME A BREAK

FROM MY DEGREE AS WELL AS GREAT

CRICKET CLUB

ULCC is one of the fastest

growing clubs at the university

and we are only getting bigger.

Our vision is to create a culture where

sporting excellence thrives and every

individual is made to feel valued and

appreciated! Over the last two years

we have gone from strength to

strength 2017-18 winning most

improved club of the year, club captain

of the year and varsity performance of

the year! And last year winning both

outdoor varsities and one league title!

In 2019 we made it to the northern

indoor cricket finals for the first time in

the clubs history! It really is a great

CYCLING TEAM

Leicester University Cycling Team

is the ideal club for anyone who

loves riding a bike or is just

looking to get fit. Whether you’ve just

started out or about to turn pro, LUCT

is the place to be. All abilities are

catered for in our weekly training, with

sessions on a purpose built cycle

circuit, as well as casual rides for those

who love café stops just as much as us.

We also host training camps, exploring

some of the best riding locations in the

UK. This along with being British

Cycling affiliated, means LUCT is the

perfect place to compete in University

colours in both BUCS events and local

races. But above all, the club is simply a

group of mates enjoying riding bikes.

Dodgeball is one of the fastest

growing sports in England, with

more and more people learning

to dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge

everyone is welcomed into the club.

Dodgeball is a fast paced, exciting

riding before you could walk or

you’ve never sat on a horse, there are

weekly lessons to suit all abilities at

Somerby where we work with the

coaches to help every member reach

their individual aims. We also offer

Polo lessons (no experience required)

as an amazing opportunity to learn a

new sport in a fun, supportive

environment. Aside from horses, the

club is extremely welcoming and

sociable, with regular socials ranging

from weekly nights out to sober

activity socials such as desserts to

Fencing Club is proud to be the

universities best performing

BUCS club for over 4 years; with our

first and second teams regularly

competing all over the country. Not

only that we are also the first and only

Team Leicester club in the BUCS

premiership. With most of our member

intake being brand new to the sport

we foster an amazing team spirit,

where a willingness to make mistakes

and try new things stands as the

backbone of our innovative styles and

national acclaim.

I PERSONALLY WASN’T A FAN OF

THE FENCING CLUB. I EXPECTED A LOT

within their respected divisions and 1

team being promoted. To add to that,

our 1st team were the 18/19 treble

winners. Whilst University sports takes

centre stage here, we're also dedicated

to moving players into clubs in the

local area, for some semi-professional

playing experiences whether you were

born in boots or want to try something

new! We are focussed on creating a

FUTSAL TEAM

Futsal is one of the fastest

growing sports in the world. In

some respects, it is more of a

team sport than football. The society

itself allows everybody to make new

friends and have an interest in a

different and new type of sport. Futsal

is a fantastic opportunity to improve on

new skills including communication

and organisation as well as fitness,

shooting and passing. We welcome all

abilities as we have something

available for everyone including our 3

BUCS teams and our social intramural

team.

The Leicester University hockey

club is a great place to meet

new people, start a new sport

or continue to develop your skills. Both

the Men’s and Woman’s side cater for

every skill level, from beginner to

advanced. We also have an excellent

atmosphere off the pitch in the many

social and fundraiser events we hold

across the year. Although you play

separately for Men’s or Woman’s on

the pitch, we always support each

other on game days and have plenty of

mixed socials. Our training, coaches

and social opportunities facilitate

Rugby League is a high intensity

game which sees 13 players

attempt to score within 6

plays, before the ball is turned-over to

the opposition. The result is a physical

and fast paced sport which rewards

skill and teamwork; but isn’t solely

reliant on brute strength or size. Our

club is built on the principles of

communication and respect, which has

created a fun and supportive

Well in fact you can, LUSSC

have been a prominent society

on campus since our founding and

provide a close-knit family like

environment for all our members to

enjoy. Offering regular training and

recreational sessions on the dry slope

at Stoke or indoor snowdomes of

Milton Keynes, we strive to cater for

those who have never seen snow

before to seasonaires. Alongside

regular competitions, training and

social events throughout the year the

peak of your LUSSC experience will be

joining us in the Alps at Xmas and/or

Easter each year for an unbelievable

week on slopes.

WATER POLO CLUB

At Swimming and Water Polo

we welcome all abilities and

offer a variety of sessions, from

our regular weekday training, to land

based sessions and also weekly

technique development opportunities.

In swimming we compete in both

national and local galas such as BUCS

Short and Long Course and our Varsity

against DMU. Similarly, our water polo

teams compete in BUCS matches and

friendlies against other Universities.

Members can choose to take part in

one or both sports - there’s no

TAEKWONDO

SOCIETY

Taekwon-Do is a traditional

Korean martial art which

translates as the art of the

hand and foot. It's based around kicks,

punches and blocks. Our training

sessions consist of patterns, technique

work, kick-shield work, free sparring,

fixed sparring, self-defence and

destruction. We welcome anyone,

whether you've practised Taekwon-Do

before or are a complete beginner who

fancies trying something new!

Although we practice ITF style

Taekwon-Do, those who have trained

in WTF style are still more than

welcome to join.

I HAVE TRAINED AT UOLTKD FOR

THREE YEARS AND OVER A DECADE

TENNIS CLUB

UOL Tennis is more than a club,

it's a family. We regularly

socialise outside of sessions,

whether that be at our weekly socials,

going out for meals or living with other

members in the later years at

university! We are an all inclusive club,

helping to break down barriers in sport

which can be shown by the

ever-increasing balance of genders

amongst its members and in particular

this year's committee. Whether you

have played tennis all your life or have

never picked up a racket before, we

have sessions for all ability levels.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Welcome to the best sport

you’ve never heard of!

Ultimate frisbee is a

fast-paced, non-contact men’s,

women’s and mixed sport that is played

both indoors and outdoors. Ultimate

frisbee at the University of Leicester

provides exciting opportunities for both

experienced players and beginners

alike; with competitive and fun

tournaments running year round,

coaching from accredited GB players

and an exciting social life. Over the past

few years, our club has grown from

strength to strength.

I’D NEVER HEARD OF ULTIMATE

FRISBEE, BUT WHEN I JOINED THE

JESTERS 4 YEARS AGO I QUICKLY FELL

IN LOVE WITH THE SPORT AND THE

INCREDIBLE COMMUNITY AROUND IT.

SINCE BECOMING A MEMBER, I’VE

PLAYED AT LOCAL, NATIONAL AND

INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS

WHICH ENABLED ME TO MEET TONS

OF NEW PEOPLE ALL WITH A

COMMON INTEREST. I LOOK

FORWARD TO BEING A PART OF THE

We remain undefeated in the annual Varsity competition

between UoL and DMU and the men achieved a BUCS league

promotion this year after winning their league. By joining the

Jesters, you would be welcomed into an inclusive, well-spirited

VOLLEYBALL CLUB

Similar to our campus, the

University of Leicester

Volleyball Club is very diverse.

We have members from all around the

world. Some of them are under 18,

and some over 30. We don’t mind if

you are a beginner, or if you have

played volleyball for decades. Along

with high quality training sessions we

also have a great life off the court,

with themed socials every other

week where we grow together like

one big family. We are committed to

creating an atmosphere that makes

everyone feel welcome. This is why

we have weekly socials open to

all club members, from beginners

to first team players, allowing

everyone to get to know each other.

As a club we aspire to grow

continuously.

UOLVC HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN

MY UNIVERSITY LIFE. JOINING SUCH A

DIVERSE CLUB HAS ALLOWED ME TO

MAKE LIFELONG FRIENDS, WHILST

PUSHING FOR MY LOVE OF SPORT

AND DRIVING ME TO BE A BETTER
