The apparent advantage of this mach<strong>in</strong>e is that<br />

the nuts are positively fed <strong>in</strong>to the mach<strong>in</strong>e at "22"<br />

from a hold<strong>in</strong>g b<strong>in</strong> at "4" <strong>and</strong> moved aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

adjustable-pressure shoes at "23" to <strong>in</strong>sure complete<br />

husk<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The Uniwai <strong>in</strong>-field husker (Fig. 90), us<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

counter-rotat<strong>in</strong>g double scrolls <strong>and</strong> a tractor PTO<br />

as its power source, was fabricated (75) for use<br />

where electricity is not available or for rocky l<strong>and</strong><br />

where the husks can be used for mulch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

field. This mach<strong>in</strong>e elim<strong>in</strong>ated the haul<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

husks back to the field from a centralized husk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

station.<br />

NUT PROCESSING<br />

In-shell macadamia nuts, as they are received at<br />

the factory, are f<strong>in</strong>ally ready to be processed for the<br />

consumer market <strong>in</strong>to the many forms <strong>and</strong> concoc-<br />

tions <strong>in</strong> which the nuts are now be<strong>in</strong>g sold. Whatever<br />

form the f<strong>in</strong>al nut product takes, the overrid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

issue that has to be met <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

the factory is quality. Obviously, the word hasdifferent<br />

connotations for the many different people<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the production of macadamia nuts (8).<br />

All the h<strong>and</strong>lers of the nuts, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with the<br />

plant breeder, through the growers, <strong>and</strong> on to the<br />

processors, contribute to the realization of a perfect,<br />

high quality nut. However, to keep quality <strong>in</strong><br />

a better perspective, subsequent discussions will<br />

be conf<strong>in</strong>ed to quality as it is affected orcontrolled<br />

as the nut goes through the factory <strong>and</strong> is f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

packaged <strong>in</strong> consumer conta<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

Dry<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Immediately after the husked nuts are received<br />

at the factory, they are dropped <strong>in</strong>to dry<strong>in</strong>g b<strong>in</strong>s, a<br />

series of large conta<strong>in</strong>ers arranged to allow the<br />
