THE AUTHORS<br />
Gordon T. Shigeura was on the staff of the College of Tropical Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Human Resources,<br />
University of <strong>Hawaii</strong>, for a total of 22 years over two separated periods ofemployment. He helped with the<br />
<strong>in</strong>itial development of Castle & Cooke's first large-scale commercial macadamia nut orchard <strong>in</strong> Puna,<br />
<strong>Hawaii</strong>, <strong>in</strong> 1949, <strong>and</strong> C. Brewer's Kau <strong>Macadamia</strong> (forerunner of Brewer Orchards) <strong>in</strong> Pahala, <strong>Hawaii</strong>, <strong>in</strong><br />
1956. After a IS-year period <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, he returned to CTAHR as a horticulturist, retir<strong>in</strong>g at the end of<br />
1979.<br />
Hiroshi Ooka, or "Porky" to his many friends throughout the macadamia world, began his professional<br />
years as a vocational agriculture teacher <strong>in</strong> the high schools of <strong>Hawaii</strong>. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this 20-year period he<br />
encouraged <strong>and</strong> developed many students who have gone on to become leaders <strong>in</strong> their fields. Ooka spent<br />
his last 25 years before retirement as a horticulturist at both Keaau Orchard <strong>and</strong> Brewer Orchards. In his<br />
spare time, he kept the <strong>Hawaii</strong> <strong>Macadamia</strong> Producers Association on an even keel by h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g the macadamia<br />
nut research program for CTAHR with state, county, <strong>and</strong> private funds.<br />
