“Wow!” said Grant, looking at the diagrams in
the museum. “This was really a gigantic war. And all
those funny-looking guys with weird hair were part of
the revolution.”
“Who?” asked Mimi, making notes in her
research notebook.
Christina giggled. “He means George
Washington and Thomas Jefferson and guys like
that,” she explained.
“Grant!” Mimi admonished, but the kids
could see that she had a smile on her face. “Those
are our famous Founding Fathers.”
Grant frowned. “Well, all I know is that they
wore ponytails!” He pointed to a portrait on the
wall. Under his breath, he muttered, “Papa would
never wear a ponytail.”
They all turned to find Papa staring very
seriously at a picture on the wall. When they
looked, they gasped. It showed a haystack-size
mound of amputated arms and legs.
“War is not the best way to solve problems,” Papa
said sadly. “Back then, there was no anesthesia and no
way to save arms and legs shattered by cannon balls.
They just cut them off.”
