Suddenly, Christina had an idea! She had<br />
forgotten that she had a cell phone with her in her<br />
backpack. Mimi had given it to her to use “only in<br />
emergencies.” Surely this was enough of an<br />
emergency, Christina thought.<br />
When everyone went to the “necessary<br />
house”—what the colonial Williamsburgians<br />
called the bathroom!—Christina looked up the<br />
number for Historic <strong>Jamestown</strong>e and dialed it.<br />
When the receptionist answered, Christina said,<br />
“May I speak to Joe the archaeologist, please?”<br />
At first, the woman was deadly silent. In fact,<br />

Then finally, the woman stammered, “I’m sorry. Joe<br />
is unavailable. I mean he is not here. Well, what I<br />

Christina was so stunned that she dropped<br />
the cell phone on the ground. A friendly man in a<br />
tricorn hat and big, baggy breeches reached down<br />
and picked it up and handed it to her.<br />
“Thank you,” Christina stammered. The<br />
man nodded and strode off on his rounds to light<br />
