“Or ghosts?” asked Grant, his voice trembling.
“No, silly,” said Courtney. “And besides, we
don’t have to stay in the forest. We’ll stay in a yehakin.”
“The what?” asked Grant, looking all around.
“A house,” explained Alex. “See!” He pointed
to a structure shaped like a loaf of bread made of
saplings and covered with matted reeds and bark.
“Good idea!” said Christina, heading that way.
“And what will we do for food?” asked Grant,
rubbing his tummy.
“We’ll look where the women grind corn
each day as part of the demonstrations. If we can
find some, I know how to make flat cakes of corn
meal or maybe some hominy.”
“Hominy’s made of corn?” Christina asked.
“Sure,” said Courtney.
“Hominy hominy does it take to make it?”
asked Grant, rubbing his stomach even harder. The
others laughed.
“Well, it’s good we can laugh,” Christina said,
“but Mimi and Papa are going to be so worried.
“And so is my dad,” added Alex.
“And Amy,” agreed Courtney forlornly. “But
let’s try to do the best we can. Maybe morning will
come sooner than we think.”
