The kids looked at one another, stunned.
“What’s all this about?” said Alex angrily.
“The clue writer sends us one place, then another.”
“Maybe we’re learning something at each
place that the clues take us,” Courtney suggested.
“Yeah, but this is urgent,” said Grant. “Alex’s
dad could get in trouble.”
“My dad’s already in trouble,” Alex said. He
had not thought about things getting worse, but now
he worried that they would. “Come on,” he said.
“Let’s hurry to Fort James.”
“But it’s almost dark,” said Christina. “Mimi
and Papa will be looking for us.”
“It’s not almost dark,” noted Grant. “It IS dark!”
“I don’t think so,” said Courtney, standing up and
brushing off the back of her shorts. “I think it’s just dark
and gloomy here in this thicket. Let’s go back to the
Indian village.”
The rest of the kids got up, but then they all
realized that the path had closed in behind them.
They did not know which way to go. And, it was
indeed dark!
