Finally, Christina asked, “Can you tell us more?”<br />
Much to the kids’ surprise, the girl suddenly<br />
looked all around, as if checking to see if anyone was<br />
watching. In a secretive voice she whispered, “Right<br />
now, I need to help you. I was given this note to<br />
pass along to you.” Quickly, she slipped the note in<br />
Christina’s hand. Then, to their disappointment,<br />
the girl hurried off.<br />
“Come on!” said Alex. “Let’s go off into the<br />
trees here and read this clue. I don’t want anyone<br />
watching us.”<br />
He led the way and the others followed.<br />
Soon, they were in a thicket so gnarled that almost<br />
no sunlight penetrated the snarled vines.<br />
They sat on the ground and urged Christina<br />
to open the note. When she did, they had to peer<br />
into the gloomy light to read:<br />
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE<br />
WITH THE ENEMY?<br />
YOU SHOULD BE AT FORT JAMES!<br />
HURRY, BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!”<br />
